  • Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific - Finale
South Pacific is a 1958 American romantic musical film based on the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific, which in turn is loosely based on James A. Michener's 1947 short-story collection Tales of the South Pacific. The film, directed by Joshua Logan, stars Rossano Brazzi, Mitzi Gaynor, John Kerr and Ray Walston in the leading roles with Juanita Hall as Bloody Mary, the part that she had played in the original stage production. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, winning the Academy Award for Best Sound for Fred Hynes. The setting is 1943 during World War II on an island in the South Pacific.
The soundtrack album of the film was released in 1958. The album became a major success, reaching No.1 in both the US and UK. In the US, the album stayed at No.1 on the Billboard 200 for seven months, the fourth longest run ever. The album remained in the top five of the UK Albums Chart for 27 consecutive weeks before reaching No.1 in November 1958. It stayed at the top for a record-breaking 115 weeks and remained in the top five for 214 weeks.

The greatest show of my childhood. The range of emotional tugging, then laughter, and discovering people are people no matter what color. Beautiful show

The Todd AO format of this picture is the most beautiful Hollywood film ever. If you can tear yourself away from the music and excellent performances, you may notice that the colors are extraordinary; the color filters used in the musical sequences work very well--and the locations are jaw-dropping. Miss Gaynor gives the best performance of her career--Oscar calibre.

Wonderful song. Mitzi is great, and she should have at least an Oscar nomination.

Singin In The Rain - 1952 and South Pacific - 1958 are the 2 best Color Movie Musicals of the 1950s, both transcendental irresistible and unforgettable cinematic experiences, glowing colors, lilting haunting songs.

Yes there were many TOP MUSICALS turned into exellent movies in the Fifities and Sixties like THE KING AND I, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS or GUYS AND DOLLS but also some regrettably forgotten ones like the Sixties Version of BAKER STREET, the Sherlock Holmes - theme Musical or QUOTE UNQUOTE about FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT

Heartbreaking how Liat didn’t really need to be told that Cable was dead. Somehow she just knew. And just when she vowed she’d never marry anyone but him. Since Bloody Mary had so completely turned against Cable before, I think there’s a chance she changed her mind because Liat was carrying his child. Which would make this even more heartbreaking. But I prefer the idea that Mary finally realized her daughter’s happiness was what really mattered and agreed to try to find Cable and make things right. It’s hard to imagine the level of guilt that Mary must’ve felt upon learning of Cable’s death, knowing if she hadn’t given up on him and instead convinced him to stay, then he never would’ve gone on that mission.

Here the musical did not followed the novel SOUTH PACIFIC by JAMES A. MITCHENER it is based on . There exists just a short story in which an American Nurse rejects a Plantage Owner because of the " RACIAL MIXED HERITAGE " of his family. referring as critcism to the Racism in the US ARMY in those days.

He died of wounds sustained in combat. Remember, this musical was set during World War 2.

I really believe Doris Day who was in line to play Nellie would have been more effective than Mitzi in this particular scene.
