  • Can I restore this 123 year old Waltham pocket watch? Can I get it to keep acceptable time? Join me in this part 1 of a total restoration where I strip and clean the movement and also re-finish other parts which are in a poor condition.
    Please leave a NICE comment, don't forget to like and subscribe!
    My apologies, but this is a re-upload due to poor sound issues present in the original upload.

    Thanks very much for both of these videos....gives me a lot of hope that my great grandfathers Waltham pocket watch from the Lehigh Valley Railroad can be restored!

    Nice! I like your movement holder. Very interesting to see the wear on the pinion leaves - I will pay closer attention to that now.

      I'm not sure how it affects the timing, but I would guess that the engagement between gear teeth and the leaves has extra play since the wear on materials creates a fraction of space that wasn't there before. But all in all, I don't think it's as tragic as bad pivots. Those holders do pop up on ebay, but they do a better job holding the watch dial down rather than dial up. Cheers!

    I can’t thank you enough for the great videos. I have learned a great deal from you. This is my hobby and really enjoy doing it, although I have ruined at least 10 hair springs! Thanks again

    I'm just getting into the pocket watch hobby myself, I'm waiting until I have all the correct tools to start servicing my own watches though. I bought a cheap Waltham 1877 that's well over 140+ years old, seems to be in fair shape from what I can tell -- but watching this video has me rethinking my initial analysis. I'm definitely subscribing, hopefully I can glean some information from your channel.
    By the way, I absolutely loved the background music -- what was the name of that piece?

    • @grumpyswatchrestorations
      @grumpyswatchrestorations  2 роки тому +1

      Congrats! Not a cheap hobby, buy very rewarding :) Don't be intimidated. Yes, there are a ton of things that may require a watch to be properly serviced, but that's all a part of learning and putting you knowledge into practice. Just do what you can. As time goes by, you'll acquire more tools and make more advanced repairs.
      As for the music, I believe it's some hour long guitar relaxing tune. I'll try to find it and let you know. Good luck!

    I have 2 waltham. A bigger one with the double case in the back. Mine is on hinges. And the front is on a hinge. It was my great grandfathers. He was born in 1878. Carried it everyday. The smaller was my grandmother's. Born in 1932.

    Great video. Relaxing to watch you work. Can you tell me what cleaning solution you use on the movement? I do not have an ultrasonic, and will need to clean my watch by hand as well. Is it just lighter fluid on all parts?

    • @grumpyswatchrestorations
      @grumpyswatchrestorations  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Jake. A bit of warm water and Murphy’s Oil Soap will do the trick. But you can also use dishwashing soap.Rinse in water, then let it soak in alcohol. Good luck!

    Recently got my family airloom back after my uncle passed. Mine looks just like this. I looked the numbers inside on the mechanism and it has a 6 digit serial that starts with 1. If I looked it up right its 1870s maybe 1860s? The case came up for 1907.

    OMG! I have serial number 7116348! it also appears to have been restored (probably around 1948 according to my ma) and has the same roman numeral clock face. Mine appears to lose about 3 minutes every 24 hours but i dont have the skill as you do to restore it.

      Hi Gunnar! Nice! The loss in time could be anything from dirt in the jewels to jewel or other component wear and tear. Hard to tell. Sounds like the watch just needs its regular service. Cheers!
