I feel like my boy George has a serious crush lol. Most of the videos are like unique or crazy pieces, then there's the monthly post of laufey being "heavenly"
Her accuracy on all those notes during the scat solo is insane. Even really great singers will flub or blur a few notes when they're doing a complex vocal run. But everything is distinct and pitch perfect.
It's accurate because the notes are premeditated. That's the version you'd hear on the record and on her live performances. On the other hand, most scat solos, especially from the earliest eras of jazz, were made out of improvised imitation of instruments such as saxophone. The 'fumbling' or 'blurred notes' that you mentioned are probably imitated microtones produced by the instrument.
i love her vowel shape on "harp." She makes it sound super young and to allow the R sound to swallow her word, yet still makes the word full and present.
It sounds "wrong", but that's what's so cool about it. She does it intentionally for effect. So well done. So cool looking back to when she wrote this and now she performs this at the Grammy's and with whole orchestras.
I don't know if you get comments like this often, but you have single handedly saved my band's cover performance of this song that I needed to learn in just 8 hours. The chart helped a ton, and I really appreciate you for covering this beautiful song.
As a brazilian, it's always interesting for me seeing people from other countries, especially on the north emisphere, falling in love with bossa nova (u guys remember Tom Jobim with Frank Sinatra, or The Girl from Ipanema right?). It's a shame that even in Brazil bossa nova, or MPB, is not a famous genre anymore. Anyway, she makes it justice. Beautiful playing, singing and super cute. Fly on girl!
I think bossa nova is alive in (Japanese) vgm - young people seem to really like it (not just old people like me). If you look at The Consouls (Australian group) audience which spans a few continents, the fans all really enjoy the bossa tunes eg Galdin Quay, New Wave Bossanova (yes, it's a tautology but the composer is Japanese so we'll forgive him) etc I think for a while people cringed because it became associated with 'elevator music' but the use in vgm has somewhat overcome the stigma!
Oh we will never forget. Not all that many South American performers make a big hit here in the US but we love them regardless. Bebel forever! Down tempo forever!
NICELY DONE! Many technically skilled youtubers can play covers very well but don't write very interesting original songs. That is definitely not the case here. This is a beautifully written bossa nova song with actually interesting lyrics.
It must have been over a year ago now that George posted a video of her singing Sunny Side of The Street and I was hypnotized by Laufey's voice. Now, she is undoubtedly my favorite musician. I love all of her songs, which I can say about no other artist. Her music has also helped me cope with life and unwind after stressful days. Hearing her music has been life-changing for me, and I'm so glad George introduced us to her.
The rhythm is quite sophisticated , and those are not basic chords by any measure . This was a cutting edge New Jazz syle from the 60s and jazz is not simple lol

This is what pure talent and practice looks like. She hits every note perfectly without any autotune. Also I love the fact that she is bringing back jazz and unique music to this day
Honestly I like this version even more than the official spotify version of the song. There's just something so pure about a guitar and their voice, no need for drums, bass, piano
Just discovered this young lady, and wow, what a voice ! Thanks for Sharing George. (had to edit) At first I thought she was singing to pre-recorded music, but she’s got some real talent, she’s actually playing this instrument and well disciplined, what a balanced person she is. Wow ! Thanks again.

@@Loammello2Well you're both half right. Bossa nova is a combination of cool jazz and samba (I definitelly knew this and didn't google the answer. I promise! 😉) AFAIK samba and jazz are not very popular in Iceland which makes her even rarer.
Since hearing Laufey for the first time on George's channel I've gathered some musicians and together we made a cover of her song Valentine, which I gifted to my girlfriend on you guessed it... Valentine's day. Hopefully soon I'll upload it here on UA-cam! Much love to George, Laufey and this wonderful community
He’s still GETTING into Laufey, and I can’t blame him. I’ve been holding back from replaying her music over and over because I’ve been scared to get over it. I finally did it and it’s just getting better and better to me.
