sister, we're sliding down a bong
i can't tell you what i think you're doing wrong
stop your crying, our daddy's gone
do you remember when he used to sing us that little song?
i wasted my youth on a poppy
doo doo doo doo doo doo just for fun
i wasted my youth on a poppy
doo doo doo doo doo doo just because
why are you lying?
the bourbon's gone
mercury hasn't been in retrograde for that long, oh no
stop your hiding and drop that bomb
do you remember when i used to sing you this little song?
i wasted my youth on a poppy
doo doo doo doo doo doo just for fun
i wasted my youth on a poppy
doo doo doo doo doo doo on the run
everybody knows it's a tightrope
the cookie crumbles into dust
everybody knows we're in trouble
doo doo doo doo doo doo
Candy Crush
just because you’re young
don't mean nothing, don't mean nothing
we are here and we're gone
do something!
while your heart is thumping
i wasted my youth on a poppy
doo doo doo doo doo doo just for fun
i wasted my youth on a poppy
doo doo doo doo doo doo on the run
and everybody knows it's a tightrope
the cookie crumbles into dust
and everybody knows you're in trouble
doo doo doo doo doo doo
Candy Crush
wasted my youth
doo doo doo doo doo doo
wasted youth
wasted you

Watching her sing this live was one of the coolest things ever
Sadly I wasted a lot of my youth on Poppies, but now I have nine and a half years clean!!! Love Jenny Lewis!!!
My brother did as well, and when he was in recovery I sent him this song and he dug it. He was nine months clean and decided to do heroin one more time…and it killed him 😢
Jenny is truly awesome
Beautiful voice and such a clever way with words
Damn wonderful songwriter and artist
She's amazing and gorgeous, I love this song
Such a haunting song.
She’s got a beautiful hint of Stevie Nicks in her voice
Makes sense why she opening for Harry
She has a beautiful voice.
II great minds think a like
Ms. Nicks ‘vocal fry’ and her treatment of Lindsay Buckingham have turned me off to Stevie. Wish Fleetwood would kick her to the curb and get back with Lindsay.
What a queen, destroying her 40s with grace! She might've wasted her youth but her middle age is going beautifully!
Well done you for seeing the desperation and darkness buried in the juxtaposition of dark lyrics wrapped in a bubble gum pop song. ... Kudos.
I dont think she wasted her youth as an young actress in very great cult films.
The song is about her mom who was an addict
This song is a real hidden jem.
I saw Rilo Kiley back in 2003 I think opening for Ozma in Grand Rapids. Saw her on the tonight show. Also watched The Wizard religiously as a kid. None of this matters. I think this is her best song. What a hook! I have no idea what happened for you to hit this creative growth Jenny, but I hope it continues.
What is it about the voice of Jenny Lewis that makes her just pure heaven to listen too!!!...
Her angelic vocal quality and she puts her entire soul into everything she sings. Such power she has-pure heaven indeed! I feel blessed I can listen to her...
Somehow, listening to Jenny makes me look back on my past and wince a bit less, and smile a bit more. 😜
Incredible lyrics. It's always another piece in the puzzle.
Incredibly underrated talent. Your voice lowers my heart rate Jenny 💖
Me encanta esta canción, los bajos de mi auto resalta al escucharla ❤
My sister's going to give me her piano as soon as I get my house cleaned up and I'm going to try to learn this song it's a great song
Have you learned it? Good luck.
Aww yeah. This is probably amazing live.
Moira Russell It Is!
Love it! Everything Jenny touches turns to gold 🖤🖤
good road trip, day dreaming, kinda song. LOVE her!
What a classy, soulfully sung tune about frivolity, with all the good classic vibes of songs from Rumer, Duffy, and Carole King. My favourite one among the other singles that she had since released.
Sounds more like classic Jenny Lewis to me 😄
Might listen to those lyrics again. Pretty sure this song is about her absentee father and mother's heroin addiction. Fun song, but frivolous isn't the word I'd use.
Ben Skirvin thanks for this. I was like uhhhhhhhhhh 😉
This woman is a treasure!
goodness this is a bop
Yes
Can't get the other two released songs out of my head, but this is the one I've been waiting for since I saw it live.
Can't get enough of this golden voice! ♥
one of the best country songs of the last few years we have left together once bottle rattled into the room corner likely never picked up
Gorgeous woman with a gorgeous voice ♥
This picture would’ve made a great album cover too
Such a beautiful voice. Cant get enough
Big fan! She can sing!!
"Wasted Youth" debuted at #34 on the New Alternative 40 Chart this week!
Can't wait for the new album.
genius ❤
Awesome sound
Well, hot damn, a great song by her again!
❤ love this track
really like her in these kinda old school hollywood glam dresses🖤 „purgatory hasn‘t been in retrograde...“ doodoodoodo😂
vermale deit “Mercury hasn’t been in retrograde”
Sounding a bit like Aimee Mann on this one. Love it!!
I just discovered Jenny Lewis. I also just discovered that she was the girl from troop Beverly Hills and The Wizard.
Me? About a month ago. No one l know listens to or tries to discover new music.
Same...my sisters were obsessed with that movie..her music is amazing
I'm sorry. You've missed a lot.
Alice in Chains LS 4 is that a millennial thing? Because everything is so accessible now? In the 90s i couldn't just click to find another recommendation. I read album liners to discover new bands. I did the work, to find the things that i love and that have shaped me. It's sad that's sort of a lost thing now
@@daydrmnation How is it sad that people don’t have to actively go out of their way to search for new music?
Love the new stuff.
Boom
them poppys took alot of lives
Jenny Lewis ❤️
I remember you singing this in Atlanta a few months ago. So amazing live.
before the album came out i heard this at mountain jam and was so amazed i cried lol
Fantastic and Jenny sounding brilliant
Cant wait for the album to arrive 🤘
Love!
Woah! Unexpected!!
Brilliant
Brilliant! I love you
Ryan Adams Princeton reverb on this one for sure
wow this is pretty good.... very 70’s (She should hook-up with Butch Walker) super impressive
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Does Jen know Aimee Mann? I think of this song as a wise, sagacious, and witty response to Aimee's sublime Goose Snow Cone.
Jeff Keys - Sounds like an Aimee Mann song
I don't know who this reminds me of. But I love it! 🙂
pure beauty
Yeah. She's the shit.
definitely hear Emmylou Harris in her voice - big time, but i like the range of Jenny's voice much better.
trippy
hi jenny
Perfect!
✨
I love her unapologetic insouciance about wasting her youth on heroin. ... I can relate.
Hi, pretty sure the song is about her troubled mom, sadly.
@@lvecch .... It's all subjective but because she sings about addiction in First Person, even when narrating her father's song, one can reasonably infer that personal experience is driving the lyrics. I'm not saying you are wrong but her mom's youth was spent with music royalty of the very highest calibre before she died aged 70yrs old. I admit to being a tad dismayed by previous comments that missed the darkly bleak point of the song. ... in fact I'm probably jealous. How lovely it would be to see cutesy unicorns dancing on rainbows in the dark and macabre.
@@davidcurry3999 she confirmed it's her mom
Dave...the song is about her mother and how she supported her addicted mother when she was a child ( youth) actress.
@@davidcurry3999 It's because she is a perfect blend of melancholy with a high dose of sweetness, she always has been...if you're not paying attention you miss the bleakness due to those upbeat melodies she's so famous for. love her.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🐶
I love the song. And I'm stoked for the LP. - the other songs are amazing as well.
But me, being a curious person - I'm trying to understand "On A Poppy".
I'm assuming it's a reference to using heroin - which is making me a bit sad.
I'd like to know too.
Taking about her mom in Rolling Stone "She had liver cancer. From untreated hepatitis C. She was a lifelong heroin addict and also mentally ill and . . . just a really sad situation.”
Ryan Adams guitar all over this
Hi Jenny Lewis can you sing the "Barking at the Moon" again
Over a decade later and it's still my favorite song - it introduced me to Jenny, after all!
Reminds me of Carole King.
Best fucking lyrics I ever heard in all my life...you are so damn beautiful and your voice is like no other to compare it to
i lvoe you
doo doo doo doo doo doo
* doo doo do do
no PDX date:( thought Jenny loved Portland.
May 22nd at the Crystal!
I love videos that do a lot by doing nothing at all.
reminds me of jenny lewis.
hey im a striving soul folk artist maybe someone here likes it
Oh hello Jenny Ive met you before when I was 4
Ear worm
*WHY THE FUCK IS SHE UNDERRATED*
Puppy.
No, poppy. As in, her mom was a heroin addict.
I sing it as puppy too cause I can relate!
Yeah I get it from the point of viewvof drug abuse. BUT the song is so light and breezy I don't feel tragic heroin abuse in it's tone. I like "Puppy" better- meaning she is over immature boyz now.
Great song! Don't you wish this was a Supremes cover??
No
I hear Karen Carpenter in her voice.
Why does this sound like LOVE POTION NO.9??????????????
It does have a chord progression that is very reminiscent of Love potion No. 9, that little walk up the scale.
hints of Chrissy Hinds
You are so right. That slow vibrato.... I was trying to place it, and then I saw your comment.
Anything I say to you now is just a lie
Ted's Montana Grill brought me here
thank God for Ted's
Fuckin same, Jenny
On a poppy?
In her new Rolling Stone interview it says her album will refer to her mom's drug use. (Heroin) “She had liver cancer. From untreated hepatitis C. She was a lifelong heroin addict and also mentally ill and . . . just a really sad situation.”
@@silverliningsarah Thanks for the info. I will read it.
puppy
@Sarah Harvey wow I figured it was referring to heroin but hadn't heard of her mom's story. The happier her songs sound, the closer I figure I have to listen. Amazing artist
hint of Fleetwood Mac? Anyone? Ok just me then...
I have to check out the lyrics I think - "I wasted my youth on a puppy..."
HaHa - now you're all gonna hear that - "I wasted my youth on a puppy, just because, doo doo doo doo doo."
Go on, listen again, u can't help y'self can u. [Manic laughter]
According to the lyrics posted in the video description, it’s “poppy”, and not “puppy”.
@@GuadalupePicasso Yes, I know that. But it still sounds like "puppy" every time I hear it (it's termed a mondegreen, like with Jimi Hendrix's "scuse me while I kiss this guy") - so, tell me that you don't hear that also, now that I've put it out there, like a virus, heh heh...
But that is I believe, the actual meaning. Even though it's spelled differently. It's about wasting youth looking at the idiotic internet. Doo doo doo doo doo
@@JuvoII not at all. Poppy is a reference to heroin. About her mom in the rolling stone interview that came out a few weeks ago she said: “She had liver cancer. From untreated hepatitis C. She was a lifelong heroin addict and also mentally ill and . . . just a really sad situation.”
But it's not funny. It's about being raised by a mom with a heroin addition. Not exactly fodder for humor.
Ryan Adams' guitar and production is so recognisable.. this whole situation sucks.
she'd eat him for breakfast
definitely a crappy situation. he sounds great here though - cool song.
@Eric Ryan erm ok.
@@willisworn isn't that sexual harassment ? eh eh.
I'm listening to her voice and lyrics
‘Looks like Kate Pierson and sounds like early Sheryl Crow.
Yep - the good old B52s!! :) Miss them :(
She reminds me of stevie nicks
Barbarella-Look? But what a voice. Music is not sooo new. Reminds on Fiona Apple. But pretty good. Go on!
I love Jenny but I always think she wasted her youth on a Puppy.
Great songwriter shares a secret with Michealle Obama.
Please dont kill AI
I thought she was saying, "PUPPY"- meaning she didn't like being with immature boyz for so long........I like my version better.....
I thought she was saying "PUPPY" -- like literally a small dog -- and I still like it better. Because dogs > people.
@@winker12341234 same 😂
I wasted my youth on methampetamine
I thought she wasted her youth on a puppy...
Sounds like Aimee Mann. And nothing like Jenny.
Look up the old Rilo Kiley stuff like the Frug. This is all Jenny. 💗
She's 43, what do you want? Modern-day Aimee Mann doesn't sound anything like the lead singer of Til Tuesday. Voices age just like faces do.
She has bigger cans than I remember. Are they implants?
Victor Medina you’re disgusting
never speak again
Triggered
I think this is probably the worst song ever written.
Wut
lol no
