Glenn fricker says without A/B tests and graphs we can't believe anything you say. Glenn says that ONLY the speaker makes a large contribution to the tone. So; according to Glenn, you have wasted your money by not buying speakers from Mojotone because SMG channel is sponsored by Mojotone. And I know this is the Gospel because Glenn uses the F word and he screams. So we know he is telling the truth.
Enjoyed the journey, almost as deep as the Pete Thorn one. Just a comment though, surely using an EMG as the main pickup is a bit deceptive? Funny how we all think we know how Ed got his sound isn't it. I just got a SV20, and it does the plexi thing, but I must confess my old JCM 900mk3 is just as much fun, and the 5150 OD has that sound as well as a noise gate. Room plays a lot into the sound as well, Ed did it in Sunset sound with 2 cabs and a drummer.
Thanks! I’ve used EMGs since 90s and like them a lot and you know what they say: ”if it ain’t broken don’t fix it” 😎. It’s all about personal preferences. I didn’t know specifically what Ed used; I just told Eric what I want sound & feel wise and he suggested similar things what Ed apparently used and I was just like ”sure lets check ’em out and if I like them we’ll keep ’em. And i did 😎.
It's becoming a bad boy? The Bad Brother ;) Those ECC83Cz tubes are JJs. The Cz stands for Czech, i.e., where JJs are made. TAD does not make tubes. They buy tubes and grade them for quality etc. Then they rebrand the ones that passed their tests. They source from JJ, New Sensor, and China etc. Groove Tubes do much the same thing. Dave Friedman reckons those new Psvane tubes from China are getting good. I am keen to try them. Vintage tubes can be hit and miss, but sometimes can be unbeatable. Most of the ones I have are not clearly better sounding than modern ones. One is though. A Phillips Miniwatt. Nothing else gets close to how good that thing makes my amp sound. I do not use it though. I want to look after it, so some good examples of vintage tubes are available for people in future to hear (same with my Sylvania 6CA7 tubes). P.S. If you do change the OT, Marstran is a good shout. I have their iron in my 50 watter. It slays. It does sound very old school though. The other is Classic Tone, but they went out of business. BTW. Now you need an Explorer or Destroyer with an Ibanez Super 70 or Dimarzio Super Distortion pup in it. It will sound mega Eddie with that amp. I always thought I was more into Randy Rhoads, but it appears I have been down the EVH rabbit hole too huh. The tone that has my ear lately is neither. It's Rory Gallagher's lead tone in a song called Bad Penny. Vox and a treble booster I guess. It is so awesome.
Hello euge, nice to see you enjoying your modded plexi! I'll have to say although i like plexis played by others i'm more of a jcm800 guy. But, as you said in one of your videos, plexi really punches you and cuts well through a mix. I see you have a fryette powerstation in your rack. Do you prefer this over the suhr? I'm currently in the market for one and can't really decide on one. Sadly i was only able to test the suhr and a driftwood load which where pretty close to each other. Have a nice day!
Thanks! Suhr isn’t an attenuator but ”just” a reactive load (really good one) and Fryette is both and I use it only to attenuate the output level a bit before hitting my cabs👌. Likewise!
There's a guy here on YT called Michael Audette that does an UNREAL Van Halen mod for Plexis, a lot of people get VH's tone so wrong, this guy nails it. Check him out and wait until he starts chugging Unchained, you won't be disappointed!
Those black "silver mica" caps your tech mentioned can sometimes cause annoying unexpected problems... "Silver mica disease" ... Those parts propably weren't even invented when fourholes were originally made. Typical symptom is audible - the amp begins to crackle like a dusty vinyl player after the amp warms up and temperature inside chassis rises... One easy fix is to put a for ex. 0.1uf coupling cap before the tonestack circuit ... Improves reliability...
What caps would you go with in place of the mica's? I used them in a few builds or mods i did on my own amps mainly because they were available but I find them a bit sterile. No MOJO if you will.
Imo, i always preferred the plexi to the 800. I bought a Boogie 90w Mark V just to get the Edge mode after your video a while back. I would love to hear a comparison with a Friedman BE-100.
Super interesting video, you shape your tone like no one else dude! All about Marshall this one, funny enough the total time is 51:50! 😊 Wish you'd go over those amps too on future videos! Keep the good work brother!
You know i was messing around with those mods a few years ago and the best "brown sound" was achieved by using those "mustard caps". It gave me the impression you had a "sd1/ts-9" on focused on mids/high midswith not so much "high end" running in the background and had decent sustain. The metal film caps give a good clear sound but not as dirty as the brown sound. Those old mustard caps did the trick for me. I can't find those in Finland i had to tear down an old hohner german amp to get a bunch (and i still have plenty left)
This might be the coolest video you've ever done. Also, the video length being 51:50 is icing on the cake.

😁😁😁
I just started watching your channel. You're playing is amazing. I will have to check out your original music. Either way Plexi all day!
Welcome aboard! Thanks! Really glad to hear!
The Bad Brother ;)
Those ECC83Cz tubes are JJs.
😎👌
Likewise!
The beat tones. I think that Bad Boy should feel threatened by this set up.
Sorry to say, I think stock sounds better. More bark, more bite, less compression.
It would sound really good with a jb in the bridge. Passive is where its at for VH tones.
Yes. I was just looking to improve my tone 🤟.
Sold me on modding your plexi to Evh spec, just sounded immense. Such a great vid thanks!
Thanks!
There's a guy here on YT called Michael Audette that does an UNREAL Van Halen mod for Plexis, a lot of people get VH's tone so wrong, this guy nails it. Check him out and wait until he starts chugging Unchained, you won't be disappointed!
i thought you were saying meat pot. i thought wtf is he talking about meat pots for. hahahahaha. im a dumb ass
Your missing the jensen d120 speakers, they're like half the equation.
Oh no I’m not trying to sound like Eddie. Just my Plexi sound in my head.
It cut through with the SOD but without it much fuller sounding
Sounds good, I’m in the middle of modding my origin50 to a hot rodded jcm800 with Jose mod
Time length of vid ... I see what you did there
It was actually an accident but a good one 😎.
Awesome tone and playing bro.
I think that for the clean tones the roland jc is for you.
And for lead... soldano. With plexi and bad boy, panned, you have the rhythm section
😂
I use my ADA MP1 mostly for ”crystal” cleans. It’s solid state clean channel is basically a Roland JC and I prefer original 5150s over SLO.
Imo, i always preferred the plexi to the 800. I bought a Boogie 90w Mark V just to get the Edge mode after your video a while back. I would love to hear a comparison with a Friedman BE-100.
🤟🎶
Dagnall transformers? Btw, amazing job and killer tones! Thumbs up, of course!
Whatever Eric suggests 😎. Thanks!
Super interesting video, you shape your tone like no one else dude! All about Marshall this one, funny enough the total time is 51:50! 😊 Wish you'd go over those amps too on future videos! Keep the good work brother!
Thanks a ton!
I just placed my order I'm getting the new release CD and t-shirt bundle. Said it would ship as soon as it is released, I can't wait! Thank you👍🏻
Awesome! Thank you!
Ai että ku aina yhtä hyvän kuulosta lankun käsittelyy🤘🔥😎 pelxi on kova ja tuon modauksen jälkeen nii!👌👌 Omast setist löytyy JMP 2203 -82 joka on🔥🤘
Hianoo! Kiitos!
Cool!
@@EugeValovirta230V also running a GE-7 with a "bells curve" mid boost added extra crunch and sustain
Geralt of Riffia
Video length, 51:50 🤘🏻
😎🤟
This plexi is so chunky holy shit! Also hyvää pääsiäistä!🐰
🕺💪
Plexi has that kraaaa of the 5150...
Yep 😎
it just hits more and more on the fact that all his amps sound like him. also its crazy he doesnt have more subs
UA-cam.com/@EugeValovirta230V which one would you say has more growl?
