I skinned out a full deer with a minimalist bowie like the one shown, and after that, the thing was still hair poppin sharp. Many people don't know, but deer hide and hair is tough and will do a number on a blade. Excellent knife.

as a US Marine i carried cold steel all over the world. i think you guys dont give them enough credit/attention. san mai tanto is unbeatable. my san mai pendleton is the nicest knife i ever owned. i also like brothers of bushcraft and you guys dont mention them they are outstanding. keep up the good work. i still have the cold steel knife i used in the marines and its just as good though scarred burnt and run over, as it was new.

I've carried a few neck knives. I travel from hospital to hospital for work. I wear scrubs and i work in bad areas sometimes. I carry a neck knife because it's deep concealed but I'm not completely declawed. Hospitals always have policies against weapons but don't protect people in scrubs, who look like prime targets for robbery, when they leave late at night.

Neck knives are great for mechanics who can't wear a knife on their pocket that may scratch up against a vehicle's paint. You can tuck the neck knife in your shirt and it wont damage anything. Great video.

Most mechanics don't carry their pocket knives deep in their pockets loose because they need easy access and with cloves on, it's impossible to get to your knife. The neck knife is an easy solution.

I love rocking a neck knife every day. Usually I carry it as a backup blade to a pocket folder, but some days it can be my only blade. Esee izula is the perfect neck knife. Tougher than nails. Not too heavy. Full tang. Love knife banter. Keep up the great work.

I never used to carry neck knives before, but I now have a minimalist and an Eldris. I tend to have one of them handy when I'm either camping or working around the house. Being from Canada, neck knives get glances, so I don't really EDC them. But around camp, having a knife at the ready for the many little tasks is always useful.

You guys do a good evaluation of the knives you review. My first side knife was a buck 110. My first fixed blade was a ot 152, in 1974. I am now on my second sharp finger, 152uh. My kids and grand kids all wear a sharp finger. Best knife ever. 3 generations proof.

Neck knives are awesome! Might take a little bit of time to get used to, it did for me anyways, but there are several neck knives that have made their way into my EDC rotation. 1. They tend to be pretty inexpensive 2. They tend to be strong and reliable because of the fixed blade design 3. They tend to be small and compact 4. They leave your pockets free for more space 5. They can easily hide behind your shirt or beard (if your beard is long enough) 6. If carried with paracord rope, you can use that for a TON of things as well! Im not gonna say that neck knives are "the ultimate knife" or anything but they are definitely awesome, usefull, and highly under rated in my opinion. Pick up a CRKT Minimalist at Blade HQ (its where i got mine and these people rock!) that fits you best (ive had every blade shape in the line up so far and Wharncliff is my favorite) and give it a try! Its affordable and always fun having more knives!
P.S. No i dont work for Blade HQ or CRKT or anything like that, I'm just another "knife-nut" giving his opinion

I carried a neck knife for awhile. They are great if high concealability matters. No one will spot your pocket clip. I loved mine while backpacking in Europe because I was constantly pulling my phone, money, tickets, rail passes, maps and printouts out of my pockets. No chance to accidently pull out a folder, a lot of peace of mind. They’re also great for jogging as they don’t get in the way. They really fill an important niche.

I carry a minimalist, i carried it for a while as a neck knife, but I’m not a huge fan of stuff on my neck... but it also comes with a screw on belt clip so now I carry it in a nice left handed horizontal carry on my belt, but I love the size as a non-threatening blade. Even though it’s a tough fixed blade, the fact that it’s smaller than my folder makes it less threatening.

  • @horizontalninja7588

I work in outdoor construction, all elements outside. Pockets get wet in what i do, muddy, and absolutely destroyed. Not only do clips, and anything I dont need on my belt get in the way, but when you are in the elements, especially summmer all day, anything EXTRA in your pockets you start to feel. Drawbacks, bending down it can get in the way if worn without a shirt, or with a loose vest/shirt. But, I tighten the loop, and Ill tell you what,I ALWAYS have me little Kershaw. The blade ateel is a little aoft on the minimalist, but it keeps corrosion down. Awesome knife.

I’m a guide in Colorado and I’ve been carrying the Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter for over three years now and you are right, it just says carry and use me. It feels great in the hand and isn’t in the way. I dress as a cowboy and I also carry a Taylor’s and Company Runnin Iron Single Action Army style revolver and the Benchmade is a great companion knife. It’s a great minimal knife.

A neck knife is handy when you do various camp tasks sitting down, like food or fire prep, and the knife on your hip is hard to reach, not to mention hard to put the blade back into the hip-carry sheath while you still sit.

Neck knife: Ease/quickness of deployment. It's right there at the chest, i can deploy the neck knife faster than you could any folder. With the exception of something with the wave feature, but even then when you grab the neck knife your already in the correct grip

  • @billandrews

Neckers are leftovers of the "Patch Knife", small blades used to cut cloth for black powder patches.
Neckers being smaller blades, are easier and faster to resharpen and so were used for small jobs that a big knife was more than you need.
The necker preserved the edge on your main blade and so saved you money in the long run as small knives were/are cheaper to replace.
If you are killing small game the necker is easier to use to dress small game with.

  • @peteg22397
    @peteg22397 6 років тому

I love my Minimalist. For me, it's just about convenience. If you're doing regular cutting chores, it's easier to have a fixed knife around your neck where you can deploy in one motion, compared to a folder which you've gotta fish out of a pocket, deploy, use, unlock, and then clip back inside the pocket.
It also saves in pocket clutter, so for people who have pockets stuffed with stuff but want easy knife access, neckers are brilliant.

I wear a neck knife some times. For me it's a cold steel spike. (Gen 2?). I wear it when I need to use my knife frequently. For example when I moved and was constantly cutting tape, packing material and boxes. It is just very handy to have the knife at chest level rather than constantly going to pocket or belt.

@Zach I carry a LCP II as well. This is how I set it up as a right hander. Summer/spring time, I have LCP II in my right pocket and then put a small Buck Knives toothpick in my coin pocket. One way to put both knife and gun in the right pocket. When the weather gets colder, LCP II goes in my pocket, chapstick goes in the coin pocket, then the Kabar TDI goes on to the belt. But currently, I go G43 appendix carry with Benchmade CLA in my right pocket. Let me know how you end up setting up LCP II with Shaman. I feel like knife in the backpocket, sitting in office and car could be tough. Back pockets got my wallet and left pockets always got my Boker .50cal pen. Depends on pants and weather, EDC set up can be fun to modify.

I have carried a neck knife for most of my career as a FF/EMT. One problem I always had about keeping a knife in my pocket or my belt is when I put on my bunker gear over my station uniform I would no longer have access to my pockets or belt. However I could pull my CRKT minimalist out from between my hood and jacket and then I would tuck it under the flap that seals up the zipper. Also since Para cord melts in high heat and was exposed around my neck I had to braid my own cord using nomex, a heat resistant cloth used in making protective gear. I did have to replace the sheath regularly as it heated it up and lost its shape but that was a minor inconvenience compared to how handy the knife was. Also when I was not in my bunker gear having the knife under my shirt meant unruly patients could not grab it...

huge fan of the crkt minimalist. I use it as a neck knife under my uniform ( Submariner in the US Navy) because I'm constantly letting other guys on my boat borrow my pocket folder. it's good to keep it as a back up when the need arises.

I wear a neck knife primarily because of the elastic waistband shorts i rock everyday. Those shorts dont lend to much weight in the pockets so its an easy choice to wear a necker. In the rotation is a crkt minimalist but my current favorite is the Steel Will Druid 281.

Natalie M I have the same mentality about my shitty Tac-Force zombie knife. It was the first knife I bought myself and EDC'd, I was 13 I didn't know good from garbage. Felt like a delta - recon sog- seal high speed low drag operator with that paperweight. But, it isn't going anywhere.
Plus then I have a knife I REALLY don't care about haha.

Omg!! That's hilarious 😂 I kinda screwed myself because I got into knives and EDC as a while by accident... I was just looking for a Father's Day present and then some random jackass piqued my curiosity- so I ended up doing a ton of research before buying, so I never ended up getting a beater knife...
Which sucks now because I'm so reluctant to use my nice knife at work (apparently I'm very rough on my gear- go figure) and I actually have to go back and find a decent bad knife to get so I don't feel bad for beating it up

I've been carrying a Spyderco Ladybug salt as a neck knife for the last couple months alongside a Mecarmy X4S flashlight. I'm finding the combination pretty comfortable, but I tried adding a small ferro rod and the weight bothered me so I moved the ferro rod to my watch strap. I don't use the knife, I'm saving it as a backup, but I find the tiny flashlight hanging off my neck super handy for hands free use, and I can charge it again easily via usb. The purpose of neck knives for some people is different to why I have it, they keep it there for accessibility, Mors Kochanski for example.

Neck knives are AMAZING for winter bushcraft. With your winter clothes and shit it's really annoying to reach for a belt knife, and it's hard to put it back into its sheath because your coat is in the way making it difficult to see. Neck knives are also good if you don't have pockets. I rarely have pockets, as weird as it may sound.

Another reason for neck knives. A lot of times in industrial jobs you have to get under awkward places to fix things or in tight spaces to fix things. Sometimes you can't reach all the way to your pocket but you can reach your chest where a neck knife would be.

I made my neck knife out of an old hobby file.
It's only 2.5" long with a 1" blade and it hangs outside my shirt.
What I carry it for is tape and string, I'm not all about speed but it can take longer to draw some knives than the quick tape or string cut does and that's where this comes in.
It seems to me based on what I read on blade forums that many people carry them defensively.

The 119 does everything I need it to, and finding a nice custom leather sheath was really really easy. Had it since I was 16, and it is always tucked in my waistline. It’s very reliable and easy to sharpen. I highly recommend it.

I carry an ESEE Izula 2 as a neck knife when I can. Sometimes it's my only fixed blade. Sometimes you don't feel the need to be carrying a heavy, long fixed blade on your belt, but a folder doesn't offer enough strength. When I have the izula, you can always have that fixed blade strength on you wherever you go.
I don't think it's just that though. A lot of the time it's just because people prefer to carry their izula around their neck for ease-of-access as opposed to waistband or belt carry. I never carry my izula on my belt, because it's a small knife and you always have to move your shirt and jacket out of the way to reach it, but with a neck knife it's always there and always in reach.

My philosophy of use for neck knives are for self defense and something to always have on me in almost any situation. I don’t typically use them for utility or something like that, however one of the fixed blade knives I edc for utility and to have a tough knife is my Esee-Kabar which is technically a neck knife but I’ve almost never carried that as a neck knife. I usually carry that one either on my belt or in my pocket. I just ordered a Guardian 3 which may replace my Esee-Kabar for edc.

I’m currently only 20 so I have to wait a couple of months until I can start carrying my glock 19. Even when I do carry that though I’ll likely still carry the minimalist. I get lots of looks and questions about it though.

Not a Glock fan... I like the 19 though, I'll probably buy one. I get a lot of questions on my wave mostly, apparently people don't know about the pocket clip

By the by, I love neck knives. I have a collection of them. The point of a neck knife is to have it around your neck where no one is considering you have a weapon and you should complement it with a handcuff key.

    • @Aron-ru5zk
      @Aron-ru5zk 5 років тому

MrLooseSkrews better to keep a handcuff key in your back pocket, no good on your chest with your hands behind you

I wear a neck knife as my self defense knife. It keeps it where I can get to it with either hand. It’s very concealable for a fixed blade. I can wear it while being active or wearing athletic shorts. It frees up pocket space. You also want a self defense knife to be lighter and a knife for utility or other uses to be a bit beefier. So I keep an esskabar (yeah I know it’s technically a neck knife) and/or a leatherman in my poket in my typical edc, and one of my cold steel neck knives or my spiderco with H1 steel on my neck. Yeah that’s 3 knives, but each with it’s own use.
I also have my license to carry a hand gun, and when I pocket carry but am not wearing cargos, it helps to free up pocket space by just carrying my neck knife that day b/c you don’t want anything else in that pocket other than your gun.

I used to carry a neck knife daily for about a year and a half. Main reason was backup to my folder and another self defense option since I can not currently carry a firearm.

  • @Fmily

I wear a neck knife because at work we're not supposed to carry knives, but they never check under your shirt. ;)
Seriously though, I just really like that it doesn't take up pocket space and is always with me. I have a lot of things in my pockets and being able to free up any room while still having a knife on me is great.

Two reasons why I suggest neck knives for edc. One is retention. Neck knives tend to be easier to keep on your person in a scuffle. Two is because of legality. Neck knife designs tend to lean towards smaller blades which tend to be legal in more areas.

I personally edc both a folder and a neck knife I like having a neck knife because it’s easier to reach from a seated position and when in tight small areas but it’s also a great conversation peace because I carry them on the outside of my clothing

AngryIrish87 By that logic, I shouldn't pocket carry either lest I cut my pecker off...
A neck carried knife actually lies somewhere on your upper chest (sheathed) and if you stand a chance of cutting your jugular vein or carotid artery for that matter then maybe you should reconsider whether you are competent enough to carry a knife at all.

At least in Nordic cultures it’s just a handy way to access your blade when wearing bulky clothes and for quick access for repetitive use. And, you nailed it, for self rescue if you fall through the ice.

Best selling is totally understandable. Though, i feel like the camillus bushfrafter needs some love. That white river blade looks crazy awesome though. Just wanted to comment. I have had the camillus for a few years now and it is a killer blade. inexpensive, solid style blade, great materials and is just brig enought to be a well adapted survival/bushcraft knife. I personally don't thing that anything much beyond 4-6 inches in blade size are useful in a field knife. At least for my needs. If you are in the amazon, carry a machete also with your camp blade. I dunno, sorry for the rambling. I just feel like there are really bad ass knives for not a lot of cash and the camillus bushcrafter is one, and it is made in the USA , Woooohoo!!

When you're hunting, large knives can often get in the way. If you're field-dressing a deer, for example, you don't want a really long knife to puncture the stomach or bladder.

Neck knives are great for cold country's when you wear heavy jackets/clothes/thermal suit(from Norway). It was first used here in Scandinavia from the viking age and upp to these days. Hard to reach for a belt knife when wearing a long heavy jacket or you dont have belt loops.now you know
