Hi, I've seen your videos and even though this one is from 2018, it is so much informative than other videos I've seen. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
You're very welcome!
Around 20:30 you summed it up well and it helped me. I was going to do a ' T ' transition to gap a carpet to floating cork but now realize the edge FLOATING over the carpet will just CRACK off once a big person steps on it, it has to be supported!! A possible :20 video: show 200lbs over a unsupported transition cracking! Thanks!
I am going to copy your exact same method to transition from 3/4" hardwood + 3/8" plywood to carpet using a Brazilian cherry threshold. Great idea to use the c-channel to make contact with the threshold. Thanks!
Awesome mothers know how it works out for you your special case may help others as well.
Turned out great, I’d probably would of used thin set mortar to build that up, but your method worked out for you.
Thanks 👍
How would I attach an end cap on my laminate that butts up to carpet that already has a tack strip/threshold?
Could you shim under carpet lets say with laminate under padding so that the carpet could make a slight unnoticeable rise. To minimize that toe hazard edge. Or even shim under tack stripping. Great video for representing common real life situations that occur with most remodeling projects. Floors are by far the most challenging.
Yes you can shim under the strip. They sell 1/4" thick strips of poplar wood at Home Depot, I buy them in 8 foot strips that you cut and use in door frames to shim them up. Usually 2" wide, they can slide under the end of the carpet.
@@jeffostroff thanks
There are tapered rubber shims available that taper from zero to 1/8", zero to 1/4" and all the way up to at least 1/2", maybe more. They come 4 feet long in widths about 10 to 15 inches or so. The higher the transition, the wider they are. In this situation you would have to drill into the concrete then glue in wooden dowels so the tackstrip can be attached.
I already have an end cap on my vinyl floors going into the bedroom, and I now am in the process of getting new carpet for those rooms. Do I have to remove the end cap, or can I tuck the carpet underneath the cap?
You can tuck the carpet under the end cap, but I fear that it will rock toward the bedroom if you step on that transition piece/endcap to the carpet. You might have to add shims under that transition piece to that it does not yield too much under your foot when you step down on it.
Thank you for the tutorial. What is the exact name and brand of the glue you use to bond the wood to the metal?
Loctite PL 3X Premium Polyurethane Construction Adhesive: amzn.to/312KyHo
Can u use hard as nails?
Was not easier just to fill it up with cement so you can get straight and more solid base ?
"We removed the shield for clarity..." ;)
what about transition between carpet tile and Wood Floor?
It's not too bad, if you had a routing table you can make your own custom thresholds, I would prefer an overhang for the carpet to tuck under.
If you make an overhang you must be able to secure it or it will break when you step on it with the carpet under it
How should I transition my laminate floor up to a carpet step? Thank you in advance!
You can either leave it straight without anything on there or you could get some quarter round wood And run it along the bottom of the step.
Why metal strips under the transion? Could I use wood?
Yes you could use wood or plastic or metal or anything strong enough to shim up and hold the weight under that wood.
@@jeffostroff thanks buddy. Very helpful video :)
wondering why you didn't make the carpet fit underneath the threshold piece? it would have looked a lot neater. great job nonetheless
If you look at 4:15, that super jagged crooked cement ledge of the concrete floor from the living room was preventing us from getting an even overhang on the transition piece. I needed to bring the transition piece about another 1" toward the carpet, buy I can't run my wood floor over that crooked ledge so I was stuck. The person who bought the condo from me actually commissioned me to removes the carpet and extend the laminate flooring out into the patio, and it looks much better now. You'll see it in one of my later videos in this play list, I believe we uploaded the video in June.
tack strip back from transition and tuck ends of carpet down for a clean look instead of raw edge of carpet against the transition.
That Berber carpet is WAY too thick to tuck the ends down. Good luck on that one
@@jeffostroff Maybe for you, exact same carpet I have and it tucks just fine.
@12:45 I don’t understand why the floor and that wooden sample have space in between them , wouldn’t the floor shift when you move it ? Why keep a half inch of space between the laminate and that wooden sample piece
Jose, the wood transition piece must be glued down so it can't move. You can see the piece will be glued to the metal strip, and you must have a gap between the wood floor and this transition piece, because the wood floor wilt expand and sharing underneath the overhand of the transition piece. Because the wood floor expands, the manufactures usually tell you leave form 5/16" up to 1/2" gap all the way around the perimeter of the floor for expansion. If you did not make that gap, and the wood floor is up against the transition piece, then when the floor expands, it has nowhere to go and it will buckle, popping up th eboards.
@@jeffostroffoh okay thanks that clears up a lot of confusion for me I was not aware the floor expands
Why can’t you just put a wood strip down first versus a metal strip?
you can use anything solid
Self level....problem solved
Nice try. First of all, most self level can't be poured that deep, and also the slab in that patio is slanted downward because it used to be an exterior patio and was sloped for water run off. Not a good candidate for doing self leveler.
@@jeffostroff , Pull carpet back, remove the tack strip. Henry's with ardex would work in that situation. It's a floor leveler not a self leveler! Float the floor out however far . Blue tack strip down , stretch and tuck!!
