Imagine having a friend like Walter or Donald and they to make music together with you...those guys must have had a hell of time in each other's company. There is simply no music like Steely Dan.
The girl's comment 'When I read the lyrics, they didn't make sense. But when I listened to them *with* the music' they did make sense' is actually very perceptive. She completely perceived the lyrics as 'undertones'.
Lizzie and the cab driver are awesome. How cool for them to have this footage with the boys. Its a little time capsule for everyone to look back at how cool the general public used to be. Miss you Walt.
Actually this is a cab show, as mentioned, on HBO. Clearly a planned interview but the people coming in are not BUT who cares…. This is great. Always been my fav group.
I grew up in Queens,, NYC(Forest Hills) blocks from Walter Carl, fun memories had by all...geniuses, complex. Now his street is named Walter Becker Way...miss ya WCB
What a great way to mine our American culture for lyrical ideas. Or to promote your band. Musicians and strangers in cars getting coffees and shakes. Brilliant.
What an amazing video... For all those brought up in the 60s who graduated from Elvis, The Beatles to the super Groups of the 70s and 80s etc This is a wonderful look at 2 incredible musicians who became Trailblazers in the World of Composing in the Rock, Jazz and Contemporary market... very grateful for this upload
From 'Can't Buy A Thrill' to 'Everything Must Go'...these guys, damn. Miss you Walter. Their catalog has aged like fine wine. The oleanders outside my wife's childhood home are in bloom...I can't look at them and not think of 'The Dan'.
One of the coolest things I have ever seen. Steely Dan is my favourite band for sure. I’m so sad that Walter is gone. Rip buddy. And these girls - is this unscripted? I just can’t tell. Love it. Love it!
I have watched this too many times to count. It gets better every time! This is perfection for a person who is both a Steely Dan and Las Vegas enthusiast.
I've been listening to them since they first came out when I was in high school. I have all their albums and their solo efforts, and "Everything Must Go" is my favorite. "Show the world our mighty hidey-ho face" is a reference to Cab Calloway. Their lyrics were hip, clever, genius.
One of America's greatest inspirational bands that wrote music that touched many styles with soul and a proof that music is alive when played well. If you were down or disgusted, when you heard Steely it pulled you up and set you in a chair looking out over the world. Few bands in American history did this as long as Steely and as well. Doobie Brothers was another great band most everyone loved. Earth, Wind and Fire, another dynamite example of inspiration. So many have now come and gone, leaving a library and legacy of inspiration in a sick world of happiness and tragedy, love and hate. Creating a flower in a desert is not easy, they did it well. Bravo, thank all the bands for their talent and hard work and decades of inspiration. It was a Godsend.
The cabby is a natural! Thanks soooo much guys! The first album I heard was Royal Scam and it changed my whole approach as a musician! I consider myself very lucky as I'm from the West Indies which no way even considers your music. It was a girlfriend who introduced me. Then it was Aja! 🙏🏼❤️
a lot of things stand out about that song (the title track), but what's really amazing is there's no cymbal crashes at all...even in the chorus of the song...but it actually works.
@@BreadandFaxes According to Wikipedia: "The DVD, 'Steely Dan Confessions', follows Becker and Fagen touring Las Vegas after hours in a taxi promoting the album in a special version of the cult HBO cable show Taxicab Confessions, hosted by cabbie Rita."
I’m so happy that I had the opportunity to see Steely Dan with Walter Becker in 2014/15. I saw the band again about amount a month before he died. He had stopped playing by then, but Larry Carlton sat in for him that night, which was spectacular in its own right.
Very cool show!! Beautiful ladies , chill rockstars, good music and a great conversation!! STEELY DAN!! Love you dudes! Man to man, y’all impress me and bring back memories of my late father, ❤️🙏🏼💪🏾🤌🏼☝🏽👌🏼
I would've asked Walter and Donald if they'd like to go check some dirty jazz dive on the edge of town, I'm buying all night (into the wee hours). The loss of Walter was a huge blow for me.
When will Don Fagan be recognized as one of this country's best songwriters? I'm thinking at least the Kennedy Center Honors or something.....too late for Walter Becker, sadly. So much great music, so little "official" recognition.
They both need to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, but only if both of them get inducted. Donald only would be pointless. You can't have one without the other imo.
1973 my friend down the street invited me over to hear the new album she bought, we got stoned and she put on Count Down to Ecstasy It's my favorite from them.....
Been a Steely Dan fan since "Can't Buy A Thrill" came out. Then Pretzel Logic blew my mind and took my breath away. Actually, all of their albums take my breath away. I saw them during their first tour in the 80s. They were very "green" live as far as set lists go. My favorite SD song.... King Of The World
Steely Dan as a comedy team, Walter: Who's on first. Donald: Yea, so what? Walter: What's on second. Donald: Who cares? Walter: Who's on first. Donald: ...( leaves cab ) Actually, they both were good.
Re; about lyrics making sense. C'mon now. Look no further than Kid Charlemagne for the question and answer to a dilemma that's plagued mankind for over 100 years. "Is There Gas In The Car?... Yes, There's Gas In The Car".
Just in terms of very high quantity/ quality of music maybe they're the best. Every great band has a sound and their is unmistakable but never repeats. Aja stayed on my turntable for ever and still remains one of the few albums I only listen to in it's entirety.
Donald doing his utmost to tolerate the dixy chick girl but to be honest its a fckn struggle ! ...however they encourage her to take this small platform , one that possibly she`d rarely had, offering her an opportunity to actually show that she has opinions that maybe previously she`s not had the confidence or been encouraged to express :))
Donald isn't doing the October residency at the Beacon this year so I'm getting my fix by watching some old videos. This one is very entertaining. The cabdriver is divine.
They’ve always been screwy. Talented as hell, obsessive perfectionists eccentric studio pros. Having tried the music scene myself, particularly the jazz scene in the smallest way. These are the cats for the cats.
So that's what the lyrics are:
"Are you reelin' in the sheaves,
Stowin' away the thyme,
Are you gatherin' up the leaves
Have you had enough of wine"
Every one of these people could be a Steely Dan song.
Who are these Children who write messages in the sky? Throw out your metal teeth!
In the back of a cab we got reckless
With the girl and her snake neckless...

This is one of the best comments I have ever seen on UA-cam
A wonderwaif with a touch of black cat
The way Walter's soul dies when she gets the song name wrong.. incredible haha
I love his expression in that moment. Priceless and hilarious!
Yeah.
Yeah, but then when she says she doesn't understand the lyrics, until she listens to them with the music, and Walter nods, like, "yeass".
What do you like to do for fun?
Walter: well there’s brooding
Reelin In the Sheaves, one of their best
...numbers
*visibly confused Walter Becker*
Reelin in the cheese ! :)))
You can't have fun banter like this anymore. Lol
Walter:😐
My mother's favorite. She was raised Baptist.
That cab driver is a dying breed of authentic
"It's a goddamn party record"... love Walter. My life changed the day he passed.... RIP brother.
Is he dead
Brilliant and fearless.
I already love steely dan, but this interview makes me like them even more.
Imagine having a friend like Walter or Donald and they to make music together with you...those guys must have had a hell of time in each other's company. There is simply no music like Steely Dan.
"It's a crisp indifference."
Walter is solid gold here. Great stuff.
Ah, yes, "Reelin' in the Sheaves"...my favorite Steely Dan Baptist hymn.
When she talks about how the lyrics themselves make no sense, but when you hear them with the music it makes sense. I can't disagree
she'd be good teaching a psych class, huh? ( : D
Damn, Walter was charming as fuck!
Dude kept drivin' to the HOOP! yeah Walter!
Best lyrics of all time.

Who's that cab driver! now that's someone I want to go drinking with!
She was all over HBO some years ago -- driving around in that cab and listening to some drama from her fares.
Actually this is a cab show, as mentioned, on HBO. Clearly a planned interview but the people coming in are not BUT who cares…. This is great. Always been my fav group.

Walter’s really enjoying himself and carrying this!

This was hilarious and touching all at once. I mean, laugh until you cry and all that. I miss Walter...
Donald Fagan is one cool dude. their concert is one I can tick off my bucket list what a privilege it was to see them perform. First Class
Donald looked super uncomfortable hahaha
Always
Donald looks so annoyed with the idiot blond chick! He just wants his chocolate banana shake!
Lol. That’s his resting face.
Fagen is one of the most awkward people in the universe, especially at the piano. Love him just the same.

The cab driver was on an HBO series called Taxicab Confessions.

“Pert..”
Good to see Walter smiling. Miss that guy.
When he says "Pert" I always lose it
Thanks for the reupload
Spectacular! Walter and Donald just being real, no pretense. The only thing they take serious is the perfection on the music.
Where the hell did this come from and how come I've never seen it before? I'm fucking flabbergasted.
the answer is in the title of the video
Team Lizzy. Kinda hammered, and she gets it.
