For anyone who doesn't know, Grove Street Games, who did these Definitive Editions, is the newer name of War Drum Studios. War Drum were the ones who did the absolutely horrible mobile port of San Andreas years ago, and which became the base of the future console ports.
For whatever reason, despite how War Drum fucked up, Rockstar decided to let them handle the Definitive Editions. It uh... it ain't gone so well.
If you read the leads' twitter you would think it was a successful launch that should be praised for its hard work.
I'm irked at the fact they had the nerve to rebrand as GROVE STREET Games.

...Is this like a joke, or do you want an actual answer? Because apart from the obvious fact that they're based on the *very* infamous Android ports, and the fact that it was a rush job by an inexperienced development team so that R* could cash in a quick buck, I can tell you some more stuff, like broken cutscenes, features, and lighting, poor quality of models and textures, blatant re use of upscaled or vanilla PS2 textures to save time and money, artstyle clashing between the different models and the cartoony aesthetic with realistic lighting, there's a lot to go through.
And that's just on the aesthetic part, mind you.

No wonder Take Two saw the mods as a competitor to this, no way this was going to stand up to what the community has accomplished and they knew it.
You would have thought it would be cheaper and easier to just buy the rights to a select number of modders' work, bundle it all tegether for the PC and consoles, and ship it to market. Buying out some freelance modders must be cheaper that owning an operating a studio.
PC fanbase might call them lazy but the console gangs would appreciate it all the same.
One of the quickest turn arounds for "What Happened" material i've ever seen... like, holy hell!
Like we've seen some happen gradually happen over months or years, but in a instant?! I had no expectations, yet I was still let down...
Oh yeah, I know songs had to be removed because music licensing, but no replacement songs to fill there place, with that being a favorite part of the games... that instantly put me off from this more than anything else.
The missing songs were a non-issue. As a musician, I get it. Labels change, ownership change. Some artists and publishers thought twice or wanted more money for usage. Rockstar thought this gonna be a quick cash grab, so losing songs wasn't an issue.
But besides updating the environments, there was no care at all for this game.
It was like copying and pasting something off of Wikipedia, then sending to the teacher for a writing project.
@@DCeeMusik thing is, you can buy the old versions of the games, new, with those songs, rockstar could have had their legal team work it out for likely little cost and as much fanfare(literally just heard about this game), its just another sign that this was a cash grab and were willing to sacrifice anything they could to get it out the door as quickly as possible. (more over. given the age of the songs in the game, and the massive popularity of gta, you'd have to be crazy not to want in on the basically free publicity for things you might not be making much money on anymore, if fallout 76 can make a Sixteen Tons get radio play again there's no way gta couldn't manage something similar)
@@DCeeMusik As a musician it still sucks ass and negatively impacts the gameplay experience for many people. rockstar has more than enough money from constantly pimping out GTA V online that they could have easily paid for the music licenses. There's no excuse.
For real. They had no excuses considering they’ve been sitting on their asses collecting gta online money for years. Rdr2 came out almost 5 years ago now. They’re a garbage company on the same level as EA in my mind after this shit. Wasted 80 bucks for a downgraded experience.

Whoever's idea it was to remove the original trilogy from digital stores and only have this absolute buggy trash fire be the only one available for purchase deserves to never be allowed near video games or involved in any of its development.

I get this series is about crime but I didn’t expect everyone to sound like they were in witnesses protection giving and anonymous interview.

I've heard that Grove Street Games originally was Wardrum studios. Wardrum studios was responsible for the 10th Anniversary mobile versions and San Andreas "Remastered" for PS3 and 360. If this is true, Rockstar most likely picked Grove Street Games because they had the most or any experience with the 3D trilogy which I think ran on the Criterion Engine. Definitive edition Wha Happun? More like Grove Street Games/Wardrum studios Wha Happun.

It's pretty clear they're still the mobile ports because I was comparing guide missions online and a lot of changes from the mobile version such as additional mission time matched up to the definitive edition missions. For example the gym mini games in San Andreas use the phone mini game version where you time your tap instead of mashing it
I'm honestly really looking forward to the Wha Happen of this, it's almost impressive how badly they've handled this!

So comfortable that they outsourced it to company that the specialize porting games to the mobile (Android/iOS) platform. 👻
They fucked up they first time they "HD"d this collection. This just continues that a 3rd time... also, the HD versions of these ( which sucked, not as bad I'll give you that but still sucked ) this " new " release are the ps2 PSN port which was a "special" port of the "HD Phone console ports" which by the way the first "HD" ports where literally a port of the phone version re tuned for console controls nothing else. So this is a port of a port of a port of a Mobile "HD remaster" port of the original " gta trilogy definitive " port ( xbox/pc final version that came out in 04/05 ) which again was an "Updated" ps2 port which was the original.... Sooooo..... This whole process began Before GTA V was even on the ps4 and its online " got gud " . . 🖖😑

As hard as it is to believe the checkpoint on a mission fail thing is actually a quality of life upgrade, as annoying as it is not having checkpoints during the mission. Previously when you died during a mission you'd restart at a hospital with no weapons and without some money and have to drive to the start of the mission again to restart it.

In that particular case, there were files left behind that weren't supposed to be there. I've no idea just what those files are, though the main theory is music files that are no longer licensed for use. I've also heard a rumor that it was Hot Coffee related stuff.
Of course, that doesn't make this right. This should've been sorted before release instead of taking away the game from PC players.

That really doesn't matter. When working in Unreal Engine you build games the same wether it's on Mobile, console, or PC...
Sad thing is the mobile versions are actually pretty damn good.

I'm almost positive they used an AI for the upscaling. All the spelling errors and messed up bones scream AI generated.
I swear I remember in 2000 when the PS2 came out people stood in line all night to get one and they were very popular. Was that a Mandela effect that I’m remembering wrong or are you mistaken? In my memory the PS2 was a huge deal and sold out everywhere. It came out in November or close to Christmas I think.

GTA Chopped and Screwed edition
I really do wish we had gotten the Canada Edition so the game can always properly apologize for anybody who bought it.
So, they DID remake it, from the ground up, in a brand new engine. This is running on Unreal rather than the old proprietary GTA3 Engine. They literally remade the game using the exact same assets.
Man, maybe THAT'S why it's so rough? I might need to investigate further!
GTA 3, VC, & SA used Renderware, LCS & VCS did however use an in house engine by Rockstar Leads.
That's a remaster, not a remake
It's still a Remaster when its all the same exact story lines audio etc just because the models and textures are remade doesn't mean it's a remake. Remake is when the entire game Story included are remade, rewritten and gameplay redesigned from the ground up.
GTA defininite edition is basically like half-life source, swapping the game's engines and making improvments in gameplay and graphics, but also creating bugs and some changes (especially with some models and textures and other changes) are.. questionable at best
At least valve did something that rockstar didn't do...
Keeping the original game instead of taking it down and force players to play the new (and worse) versions
I loved the build up and pay off to that whole part when you boobytrapped the car and parked it, got out, saw it was crooked, then got back in and tried parking it again and got blown up

@@MattMcMuscles A whole lot of those insane details from San Andreas. CJ having different animations for everything based on his stats and his body type is gone. 2 player is gone. Each game has San Andreas ui sound effects instead of thier own. Also they removed fog so things have a huge draw distance and looks very Gary's mod-ish. And a whoooole lot of music is gone.
Pretty passible if they only didn't remove the originals from online stores.
Just went on the devs site and it almost all but confirms that this "definitive" edition was just a upscale of the fucking MOBILE ports of the ps2 games. 99% of their games are mobile ports of rockstar games, oh and Ark survival lmao.

It wasnt Rockstar themselves, they outsourced it to the people who have been porting it for the past few years, but even then Rockstar didnt even bother to care

so when you said this is a remake, you where accurate; the collection has all the games rebuilt in Unreal, whereas the base games where running on their own engines, and each one was on a different engine (iirc an inhouse one from rockstar leeds from vc onwards, but I think 3 used renderware?). they're built using the same assets, but the backend code is new because it had to be remade in Unreal rather than directly ported over, whch sounds like they messed up some things on the audio playback because its shifted down a looooot of octaves here
so its possible some of the bugs you and others have seen are caused by the remake and something playtesting missed. I've seen other have the audio issue but also seen peeps on xbone not have it, so maybe its specific to the series X?
but yeah, everyone sounding like the killer from Triva Murder Party is not what I remember from the vocals XD
The games are not rebuilt in Unreal at all. They use a translation layer that uses Unreal for rendering and the new graphical/post effects. Its the same old game underneath, the same crappy mobile port from years ago to be precise.

It is not an engine swap, not ground-up remake. The game has exactly the same physics, animations and cut scenes. The old engine is running under the crap new shaders, I guarantee it.
Apparently, the main character in GTA3 is named Claude. However, I don't recall anyone in the game ever referring to him by name. So I can only assume that either his name is in the credits and i've just never noticed/cared enough to look, or he was named post-release.
Actually his name revealed in GTA SA, more specifically as Catalina boyfriend, since SA was prequel of 3 by timeline
@@thiekus I do recall that. You have to race against him in one of the story missions, and afterward, he flees to Liberty City with Catalina which sets up the start of GTA3 and the failed bank robbery about 9 years later or so.

I don't get a lot of the praise I'm seeing for this game online (thank god not that much so in this comment section)
All they did was upscale/redid textures, changed lighting engine and improved some slight gameplay things like being able to rotate the camera around with the right stick.
There are fanmade mods that do more than that. I get that this is supposed to be a "Remaster" instead of a "Remake" but regardless, even for a remaster this is lackluster. Especially if you call it the "DEFINITIVE EDITION" which should let one know that this is the BEST version of the game, which clearly isn't the case with the missing music, the censoring of some things etc.
I finished GTA III and San Andreas on the PS4 a few months ago and I was still thinking of picking this up, which would be my FOURTH time buying the game. Then it came out.
