I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.

I have a John Deere LA130 bought in 2007, 48" deck. It has almost 700 hours on it, and still works fine. That RIO button is very easy to bypass, and raise the deflector and it will throw the clippings a lot better.

We have a 2017 JD S240 18.5 v twin. We did get carpet laying discharge until I lifted the outer discharge chute and bunged it the upper position. Now the clippings are thrown to the wind and there is no residue looking layer on the lawn. When the irrigation is operated, any clippings laying on top of the grass plants are pushed down to the soil. We traded our Husqvarna LTH 18538 with mulching kit on the JD. The Husqvarna did a terrible job leaving clumps and wind rows on the right side of the mowing path, and being a one cylinder, it vibrated. With the JD I can mow bare footed and with the Husqvarna I never could.
We bought the Husqvarna in 2013 for $1,300. JD gave us $1,000 trade allowance (no other dealer or brand would take a trade in) The JD was $2,300. With the Husqvarna it took 1.5 hours to mow the lawn because I had to go so slow. With the JD, I'm done in 45 minutes.
I now understand "it's not how fast you mow, it's how well you mow fast"

I think the Husqvarna has the edge over the Deere. I know because I have both. The Husqvarna also has a metal hood as opposed to the plastic hood of the Deere, which will break its mounting points over time. The Husky will age better in my opinion.
The Mower deck is constructed better too.
V-twins are generally more louder than single piston, but nonetheless, I always use hearing protection and safety glasses when mowing so noise is never an issue.

Nothing that will make me want to get rid of it though. 460hrs is far from end of life. I keep it well maintained and it runs great. I was just a little more impressed with the Husky's metal hood and other areas that are a bit more robust. I'm happy with both and each has it's purpose where I am. I use the Deere for the light sections and the Husky for the heavier. I have no need for an X300 to be honest.

I’m not trying to be mean or a smartass but you’re comparing a brand new mower to a John Deere that has been Rode Hard and put up wet! Lol
Man I have a Cheaper Scott’s (John Deere) that I bought from Home Depot about 17 years ago that has set out in the weather every day and it looks much better than that John Deere that your neighbor has in your video and it still runs great today. The wind row effect is due to the chute design. One can add a bolt through the chute that contacts the metal deck and holds the chute higher above the ground or like I did, bungee the chute all the way up and broadcast the clippings. My S240 mows better than my neighbors JD Z35 with mulching deck.

  • @discerningmind
    @discerningmind 5 років тому +1

I think the difference in the cut here is that the Husqvarna probably has High Lift blades installed, and the John Deere has Mulching blades installed. As well, the chute design can have an effect on how the cut grass lays down. When my grass is tall and thick I use a bungee cord to hold the chute completely open. Doing this allows the cut grass to flail out of the machine spreading thus spreading it far and wide--no rows of heavy cut grass remaining.

Well, it's been a summer and my husqvarna worked flawlessly including sucking up leaves (I have a lot of those) going up and down steep grades and on wet grass. Did not have to add 1 drop of oil.
The limited slip rear might chop up weak or newly planted grass when making extreme tight turns, but the grass seems to fix itself, it's not that bad.
The only minor thing to mention, very minor, is that the hour gauge fogs up on certain days, but it goes away.
As far as my comparison video, the John Deere looked exactly the same as the newer ones I saw while shopping around. The deck, seat, pretty much everything. This was hardly a scientific comparison, I agree.
My other neighbor upgraded from an older Craftsman to a Husqvarna this summer, but with the gray deck, usually found in Home Depot or Lowe's. We are not on speaking terms, but he seems to have no problems.

Nice video. I toasted my JD briggs engine due to low engine oil last week and now I am in market to buy new one. My old JD use to similarly lay out grass clumps when discharging on side, even with sharp or new blades. The deck was pretty clean. So I was glad to see I wasn't alone with this issue. Does anyone have similar grass clump issue with Husqvarna. I am debating to go with JD D125 or Husqvarna YTH22V42, and would really appreciate to get feedback on Husqvarna in how good it cuts grass.

    • @mrbackyardmechanic3956
      @mrbackyardmechanic3956  6 років тому +1

Thanks for the reply. I caught a lot of heat for this video, it wasn't meant to be scientific, just for fun really.
This was the first year I left the mulching kit on, including the blades and chute cover which makes everything get chopped up really good. My grass did very well, I was really surprised.
Under normal use, with the chute opened, it throws the grass nicely and I have had no issues with the tractor at all except the darn seat already cracked at a crease :(.
Changed oil at 40 hours. Blew out air filter. Engine runs fine. Did not have to add ANY oil prior to or after the first 40 hours, now up to 50 hours or so...
I would suggest a local dealer for one and treat the transaction like buying a car. I got a good package deal with a blower and commercial grade weed trimmer...
Also, and others would agree, it seems the brick and mortar stores sell tractors with lower quality parts, including internal engine components. Good luck with either purchase, they are both good tractors...

All home-and-garden center variety mowers are a compromise in many ways. It's a very competitive market and price is the name of the game. If you want a truly durable mower you're going to have to pay another $1,000 or so and get a garden tractor; everything is beefier and longer lasting.
However, in the end, regular maintenance is what's going to keep anything lasting longer. Many homeowners don't do this.

They are cheaper and don't last long, what you want is a Kawasaki engine. Also the same company makes Husqvarna, Craftsman, MTD, Poulan Pro, Airens and more. They just are different names and a few things are different. Newer mowers are cheaply made and only last a few years anyway, but the older tractors I have , have lasted 50+ years.

Im not a fan of the Kohler engines. You can find a Husqvarna with a Briggs though. I ended up buying a JD D140 for my first lawn tractor and I love it. The JD has a Briggs engine if you buy a JD with a "John Deere Engine." I was a field engineer for a cnc company and actually did some work for Briggs. I was told by a Briggs employee literally the only difference in the engines for JD vs any other tractor brand is the JD engines have Green stickers with the JD insignia. The reason I got the JD though is I live close to a dealer and parts are very easily and readily available for me. If I wouldnt have bought the JD I would have hunted down a Husqvarna with a Briggs on it.
As for throwing the grass mine does a good job. Except next week I'll be putting on the mulching kit so it won't matter any more lol. Too many leaves around my house not to have it.

Hey Chad, depends if your area is flat or has bumps. Smaller width decks take a few minutes longer to complete a cutting, but I feel, do a better job if you have dips and hills.
I've had ZERO issues with the tractor. Just did the 2nd oil change, getting ready for spring.
I have more demo videos to upload, it's just so time consuming with dsl.
The LS in the GTH52LSI likely means it's limited slip, which, if you have hills, works great, like posi traction....
Just checked, they call it " locking rear differential"
I read somewhere, that style deck has increased "clogging" due to it not being so rounded near the top sides, if that makes sense...

I may be mistaken, but you threw the grass with the Husqvarna to the outside with both passes whereas with the John Deere you made your second pass over the discarded grass of your first pass which explains the build-up. If so, this is not a good comparison.

my first riding mower was a Sears craftsman LT1000 back in 2005 and it has a 42" mower deck. Now first I must say I am NOT very good at maintenance and I am a bit rough on equipment. It served me very well until a couple years ago and never had any bad issues that were not from my own doing. I also now have a Husqvarna 48" for 2 years and I have noticed one thing. I have had to drop and clean the mower deck a lot and it seems to easily got clogged with grass. It has 3 smaller blades compared to the craftsman which had just 2. Also I have issues with the Husqvarna throttle getting stuck especially on slopes. I had it looked at and supposedly fixed, but it still does it. Also it is very hard to see how much gas you have thru the little window since gas really has no color to make it stand out. Just my 2 cents and experience and like i said I am not very easy on equipment so if they want to truly test them, then let me have it for a go. ;-) Just saying

Best riding mower i ever had i am 78 and i think it will outlast me.

The one mod i did do was i ran a fused wire from the positive of the battery terminal to a switch on the dash where the throttle control has the arrow and drilled a hole and fed the toggle through on a DPDT center off switch ran the top terminal to the front to the junction where the headlights went to the hood and ran the ac volts off of the ignition switch to the rear of the switch i installed lower terminal this gives me the option of a full 12vdc on the headlights anytime or the Alternating current (Dim) which i never use anymore .

I think your buddies shoot has aged as mine has and sends the grass downward, resulting in the grass not being throw outward. I leave mine in the up position using a bungee chord which I slip off when mowing the street. Both good mowers. Your buddy should clear his deck of debris more often, and his oil filter needs to be changed by the look of it.

I have a Husky Rider that's almost zero turn with mulching deck and blades. It has a B&S motor and mows our acre (which has a combo of grass types and weeds) beautifully, no leftovers or unsightly leaves after a mow. If someone offered me a JD of similar quality and price when I was looking I may well have gone that way. I will never tie myself to a brand. It's not logical. There are good and bad with EVERY mower, we all know that. When some commenters say never, can't and don't they are leaving themselves open to ridicule or at least being put in their place. For example B&S motors are good nowadays and to that poster who said you can't, yes you can get a Husky with a Kwaka motor. In fact I could have when I bought mine. This rubbish about mowing quicker with the Deere...what's that all about? I can fly and do a reasonable job or slow down a bit and enjoy the me time. I'm out there for some R&R actually so who the f cares if it's a bit longer, if at all?
This video comparison was not very good; a new mower versus an old one of dubious maintenance history. Blades may have been chipped, blunt and or bent in a clogged up deck on the JD versus brand spankers and clean deck on the Husky. A somewhat ineffective way to kill quarter of an hour was all. To MrBackYardMechanic, I for one could not understand a word you spoke while actually mowing, all drowned out by the engine. The whole video had low volume. I am glad you didn't come down heavy on the Husky or the JD; let the fanboys do that. Big Tip: Don't wash the deck or mower innards out with water; always use air and a steel brush. Bearing can get water in them and . . . well you know bearings don't like water.

Well, my Husqvarna at 160 hrs. is still running perfectly well. Just the seat has two rips in it because of the material. I'm not sure if the newer ones have different material?
John Deere machines are good too, I guess it's what you feel good with.
As far as blade removal, I just raised the deck up on both them if I recall it's either a half inch or 9/16 bolt remove them, use a hand file and reinstall.
Deck removals are also pretty much straightforward very easy to do. On both models.

I have a 2010 Poulan Pro 500EX 46" 20hp B&S (made by Husqvarna) and I love it. I don't mulch leaves in the normal sense, but I get it done just the same. I blow the leaves in towards the center of the lawn as I mow till their in one big pile in a row and then mow over it and keep reigning back in towards the center until the leaves are chopped up so fine that on the final passes they basically disappear. I can only see a few slight differences between yours and mine. Most everything is the same except my deck only has the rear anti-scalp wheels, no deck stops in front and no 12volt port. My blade engage is like the one on the John Deere. On the other hand the transmission disengage on the back of mine is a lot more robust than that wire on yours. Mine looks like a thick rod with a knob on the back. I bought it brand new in 2010 and it still works like new. All I have ever done is general maintenance to it except for last weekend when I replaced the old mandrels/spindles in the mower deck as the bearings were going out in the old ones and making the deck vibrate bad. The new ones came with grease zerks which the originals did not have so they should last longer. I currently have 177.3 hours on the mower and it's still going strong.

I have to edit my farewell to my poulan tractor video. Not sure which engine you have, but with mine, the plastic ring gear aka flywheel (where the starter engages and spins motor to start) broke and sheared off one of the two coils. I ran the crap out of that tractor on 1 cylinder for 6 years or so.
Finally, the deck collapsed and that was that, hello Husqvarna ;)

Matt, that's too logical ;) . My neighbor, who's older, went with his wife to the Detroit suburbs to visit his wife's ailing relative. He called me and asked me to care for his lawn because he had extended their stay and he noticed we were having a lot of rain back here in NY. He told me where the key to his shed was, the gas, and of I went. At the same time, a few days later, I got my Husky.
I figured that one of the 2 times I cut his lawn (about 1.2 ac.) I would make this video. Since then, he has developed liver cancer, had a transplant and his health is "good". So, being a good neighbor, I try my best to help. Heck, his wife brought us some homemade chocolates and a $50 charlie brown's restaurant gift card.
