  • One of the great jazz composers and tenor saxophonists of the 60s to the 90s, Joe Henderson had a melodious style and an iconic composing voice. His Blue Note LPs bring big money, but Joe kept making great records for Milestone, MPS and Contemporary after the mid 1960s. Well worth searching out and his LPs are bargains on ebay and discogs.

Hell yeah, Ken! I recently picked up the live Milestone pressing of Joe Henderson in Japan-man, what a killer record. A tight Japanese backing band which includes some great Rhodes playing. He's clearly vibing off the audience, and you can tell they're really feeling it, too...

I just got a copy of "Our Thing" on Music Matters. Say what you will about the MM reissues, sometimes it's the only way to get a hold of some of these titles without paying a ridiculous price. I will definitely be on the lookout for some of the other Joe Henderson LPs. Thanks, Ken!

Another excellent jazz LP video, Ken! Thanks. For those like would like some 'mo Joe, check out his work as a sideman with Horace Silver. I particularly love The Cape Verdean Blues, and of course Song For My Father. JH has some pretty memorable solos, IMHO.Also, great rec for buying Division of Liberty 'VAN GELDER' Blue Notes. That's how I built most of my collection back in the early part of this century when Japanese collectors drove original pressing prices through the roof. $20-$35 vs. hundreds or thousands.

I forget his great sideman work. And you're correct, Libertys are still a great way to build a Blue Note collection. Folks better jump on those as prices are rising.

Ken great Joe Henderson collection I'm still missing the Milestones you showed and in and out on blue note . Joe was an excellent player I love his playing on Pete Laroca Basra very mesmerising and on Bobby Hutchersons album Stick up they sound great together. But the real sleeper is his record " The Elements with Alice Coltrane and Charlie Haden it was just reissue last year definitely check that on Ken I think you will like it really spiritual. I really enjoyed your video have a great week Ken. Lovellandrew

The Kicker.1969.Nuff said.Ohh but love tune "Loose Change" with Ron Carter and Al Foster on "State Of The Tenor" always blows my mind.So many great LP's.If you are going to list em from Coltrane,Rollins,Griffin.and Henderson would be the pure players (i.e. those not acknowledged for playing and composing like Shorter) but a list of modern great tenor players that didn't include Mr.Henderson shouldn't be taken seriously
