It's definitely a big benefit to them and their business in my opinion! Although it can be annoying to us sometimes, it makes a ton of sense from the business perspective.
Hope you're having fun during your travels. Thanks for the video as usual. The Chase Travel Portal tends not to price well. Thus, some of their credits are overrated in my opinion. Hope you're doing well.
I only view Chase as a secondary setup with the Freedom Flex + Sapphire Preferred. If they gave us a 2x catch all with 3x on groceries on a different card, I would probably be all over them.
many years in the cc game, but I decided recently to finally add chase trifecta because they have Hyatt as a partner. As long as Hyatt remains the most valuable hotel partner, I’m okay with chase’s cheap multipliers. If we had better multipliers then the trifecta would be OP on Hyatt transfers. The other trifecta and duos out there have better multipliers, but you also need that multiplier points in those partner programs to make a decent redemption.
“Better” categories from a user perspective is expensive from a Bank’s perspective. We already know Chase is struggling to make money from the CSR. Combining multipliers from other cards into one (i.e. base 1.5x from CFU added to CSR) is *really* expensive, because most people only have 1 card and/or Chase is banking on you not remembering which card to use for the category. At this point, and category that they add will have to be below their cut of the swipe fee (2% max) and a category that encourages more spending. Groceries and Gas don’t really get people to spend money they otherwise wouldn’t have, in the way that Dining and Travel do.
If you product change the marriot boundless to ritz carlton card a day or two after 1 year... will it affect my free award night that should be issued for using the boundless for a year?
For those that have are really into the credit card game - many times 5/24 was brought up I just wonder how you feel about the credit score hit you have to take so often (5/24 already seems like a lot to me). I know it will eventually come back up and that you most likely are paying the balance in full every time. But how much does opening so many new lines of credit and lowering avg age of credit impact your scores? PS: theoretically increasing your utilization could help offset some of the downside but still what’s the impact like
I actually just talked about this in my video last week! Your credit score will get hit temporarily, but rise again within a couple of billing cycles as long as you use the card responsibly and keep a low utilization. As for the lowering of your average age of accounts, that factor is a small one in the grand scheme of things, but it does stay pretty low if you constantly apply for new cards. Once again though, it gets heavily outweighed by the other factors.
I think honestly the Chase ecosystem is good for those who are focused solely on US travel due to the Southwest transfer but in all honesty if you travel abroad once a year or even twice a year then by far Capital One or Amex are far better. Especially the venture X if you're a big spender You're earning 2x on everything. I have a buddy last year Max out the grocery spending with the Amex and then earned an additional 60,000 points on the venture X. So effectively between two cards he's getting 160,000 points a year You do that for 3 or 4 years You can go on one unforgettable vacation or several small vacations
Spencer bringing the Miami Papi look to Croatia. Chase branded cards only saving grace are the boosts in the portal, Ink card train, and some of their legacy airline/hotel transfer partners. Lack of strong earning “permanent” categories make the cards really hard to earn a ton of ongoing points otherwise. I think they are popular because they are the largest bank, easy to understand for average user, co branded cards . The everyday person I meet in the wild with Sapphire/Ink cards just use their travel portal and that’s it.
Hahah gotta do it! I agree with your take here though. The welcome offers are really the main thing keeping me in Chase's ecosystem aside from the CSR.
5/24 doesn't make me think about Chase first. It just makes me not even consider Chase as a company. I closed my checking, savings and investment accounts with Chase and I no longer spend money on United, SW and Hyatt. If they don't want my business, I will take my money somewhere else
I'm with Stan 5/24 rocks - it makes you slow your roll and play smarter. Also, given 5/24 and 2/4 year SUB repeat rules are the only anti-gaming rules, it's easy to plan around. I don't mind it. It's way better than pop-up jail and once-in-a-lifetime rule. It's better than approval rules for Citi and C1.
What are the odds of chase actually making these changes? I would love to have gas, grocery and dining on my CSP cuz rn i literally only use it for dining and banking points
5/12 might seem too short of a time for chase but 24 might be too long for us. i think 8/24 should be a new rule. 10/24 is too lenient and 5/24 is too strict and i think 8/24 is a sweet spot
I'm currently using only one chase card and its the freedom flex that I apply not too long ago for the 10% grocery cash back and its been helping me WONDERS due to economy shrinkflation and inevitable inflation!
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Thanks man I tried my best to be a credit card person taking advantage of the rewards system! Your videos helped me too also relieves some boredom time to time.
I have a big feeling that trevor is about to not have a good year and still be doing all the fumbling and picks like he has done the last couple of years
Chase is meh overall IMO. They do have a couple of cards that I like though and some sweet spots = my kids want to burn up UR pts with the CSR 50% + Apple (inspired by your Apple purchase). Thanks for the info + video!
I do wish they increased their earning categories because that just leaves me earning a majority of my points through welcome offers, but hey, those are really solid so I can't complain about that. That's cool to hear that video inspired you though! You're the man!
I’m sorry can you explain capitalizing on Chase cards? I’ve had a freedom unlimited for 3 years, so can I just apply for another freedom unlimited and get a welcome bonus or do I need to product change my original freedom unlimited?
You can't be holding the card you want the bonus on again, so you'd have to product change or cancel it first. Product changing is generally the approach I recommend but either way works.
Interesting video, people were asking for 3X on gas and groceries. That probably won't happen. But I feel like, if they did 2X on either one, would still be a decent upgrade. That essentially turns the CSR points worth 3% which is kinda what is being asked for. The catch obviously works in favor for Chase too because it keeps you using their portal for the 1.5CPP redemption.
I think the main reason 3x was the request is that everyone is in agreement that 2x on the CFU should be a mandatory, but I see where your head's at for sure.
It would be nice also if each quarterly category for CFF always had gas or groceries in addition to the other truly rotating category. So Q1 and Q3 is gas and then Q2 and Q4 is groceries.
Thanks for letting me know! These aren't for everyone, just those who missed the live stream and/or want to listen to a more condensed version of the high points. I just want to be sure everyone gets a chance to see these since a lot of us don't watch live streams all the time. Feel free to skip the highlight videos when they come out though!
The problem with treating points with the unlimited as 1.875 with the CSP and 2.25 with the CSR by redeeming with the travel portal is that typically the travel portal is always more expensive in terms of flights, hotels and rental cards than booking directly or even with Expedia. So it diminishes the value of the points in my opinion if you redeem with the portal.
@@soapa4279 its regurgitation from hear say everyone thats fully into the chase ecosystem knows rarely does flights/hotels don't match public platform prices. No offense to anyone but Its just repeating hear say. Chase portal is usually very accurate
@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial it would be nice if chase made it to where any travel expense you book through an airline or hotel or say Expedia could have the expense erased with points at 1.25 and 1.5 CPP that way if the chase portal isn’t the cheapest then it doesn’t matter. Also then you could earn airlines or hotel status with using chase points.
I like the idea of the 2% or 3% of groceries of gas on the Sapphire card but I wish they could load because a lot of people cannot get the bone I know I can’t. I haven’t had one yet and I would love to change it once in a while people hello bonus on all the cards one year lol bonuses I want you.

5/24 rule is a good rule. People are too willing to put purchases on debt. Chase is protecting themselves from the very bad spenders
There are a lot of reasons the 5/24 rule makes sense from a business perspective no matter how annoying it is to us consumers. I agree!

I like Chase co branded cards. Ur their subs are usually just meh. Inks are essentially reason to stay below 5/24

That's fair for sure!
The capital one duo is a pretty solid setup: Venture x for the 2x catch all then the savor one with 3x on groceries, dining, and entertainment.
Would it be smart to apply for the CSP & Freedom Unlimited as a duo ? ? Or Freedom Unlimited & CSR
