    To all the people out their calling this guy a bum. I can only say that not everyone wants to live a boring ass life working, bills , kids, wife, house some people just want to find themselves not some mundane stable life run by a privliging system.

    As a guy from finland it is quite wierd to hear that it is illegal to camp into woods when and where ever you want. We have as know "every mans right" to camp and enjoy the nature for free no matter who is the owner.

      Yeah, I live in America but it is NOT the land of the free. That is just the bullshit we used to say to make us feel better. This one poor guy was murdered by the police in new mexico for simply camping in a desert park area. The bastards shot him in the back and let the dog loose to chew on his dead body like they were doing some military operation in Afghanistan.

      So you can stay there if you drive a minimum of thirty feet per month? That sounds nice. In America they don't want people living off the grid and growing your own food. They want you plugged into the system like a good slave. I may move to Canada if things get much worse here. America is turning into NAZI Germany but at least Hitler loved Germans. America is treating it's own citizens like the enemy.

      ***** I wish I could tell you it's a whole lot better over here in the UK but in all honesty, it's not that great. The majority of country likes to think we're somewhere in the mid atlantic not right on the doorstep of Europe and wants to get out of Europe (god knows why). If you come to the UK though come to York/Yorkshire, you'll love the scenery, countryside and history.

    I have zero desire to couch surf, sleep with locals or visit random FB "friends". As an introvert that would be emotionally exhausting to be 'on' all the time, it totally defeats the purpose of traveling to decompress. I guess what I'm really looking for is true independence, being able to camp for free and stealth camp for a couple of months at a time.

    I love how you touched on the idea of being "genuine". It's very true.. people enjoy the simple pleasure of getting to know a stranger. From the bit of "couch surfing" I've done, I've been constantly surprised how people open up to you if you can offer the same in return. Share your stories, ask about theirs, share food, music and drink and before you know it, you've created a lifelong friendship with someone you've spent only a fraction of your lifetime with.

    When you mentioned sleeping in public places, it reminded me of that one gym trainer I saw yesterday, asleep at his desk hahha. I like to sleep while I travel on long bus rides, so if the ride's an hour, I usually sleep for 45 minutes and wake up feeling great! Although, sometimes if I'm too tired, I oversleep..and as a consequence, take another bus back home!

    I have a question for couchsurfers: Do you do some jobs in the country you are visiting or do you just travel on vacation? Because I am working right now and soon plan to go into an education, but I also want to travel the world. Do you just give it up for the sake of traveling? I know magic happens outside your comfort zone, but I also dont want to lose the fundaments i am standing on that could save me from sleeping on the street forever. I am so curious? What decisions have you guys amde? Please tell me :)

      @eilimelime 9 років тому +3

      The way I see it, its very important not to neclect your educational fundaments, as you say. However, I think we live in a very rushed world, where we are told to live our lives in one specific order. I myself just finished high school this summer and is having what people call a gap year. So I'm out traveling the world now and plan on doing so a few years, maybe with some breaks along the way. Travel for me is an education itself, much more rich in perspective than anything you'll learn behind a desk! So I won't rush to a higher education for a few years. I just turned 20, and the way I see, I don't have to make a decision about what to do the rest of my life right now (as you do, when choosing education). Also, I don't now WHAT I want to study yet or how the world works, as my entire life so far, has been around school :-) Live your life according to what fits you and find your own order in doing things. Maybe this doesn't apply to everyone, but it's considered "acceptable" where I'm from (Denmark). A lot of people begin studying at the university in their mid twenties.
      Hope this helped, good luck in finding your own way!

    Wondering if there is a way to disguise a tent, to look like something else, so that it is possible to sleep in a busy city street and have people not look twice. I have seen man hole covers that had people from the city making repairs in underground. Some even have steam or smoke coming from them, and there is usually a cordon around them of some kind. Humm if the color and basic shape was right, find an alley set it up and put up a rope around it. People would not look twice, you could probably even cook a meal there. : ) someone needs to invent a light bogus shell. Humm

(Ive found 9-10 days at a hotel/hostel/apt is the same price as a month). Go for a month to save. Sleeping on couches and leeching doesnt fit in my program, as I love to date girls in all the countries I visit, and I need an apt to 'entertain'.

      keven zeni Nope, If social skills are important now then my action oriented brain is important in a crisis, when it will happen I will just flip the middle finger to those who will seek help from me cause I wasnt accepted as Iam when there was no crisis.

      Sometimes & some places it's impossible to find a room. Many people are looking for a fresh face in the area and someone they can exchange stories with. They just like to do good deeds as well as they were young once themselves. If you never left the country you were born in, it's nice to talk to someone of a different nationality.
