  • How to make a DIY router plane with basic hardware. This router plane is made with an Allen wrench or key for a blade but has some bonus features. It has a fine adjustment knob and a depth stop so you can easily match up your joints, hinges or inlays.
Don't try this with an Allen wrench that comes with put together furniture. You need a good quality Allen wrench that will hold an edge after you get it sharpened. You definitely need to anneal it before you get started. If you can bend and thread the hex key without annealing it you have the wrong type. I'm not a blacksmith so I can't give you much advice other than I heated it until it lost magnetism, quenched it in oil, and baked it at 400 for an hour to temper it. I'm sure there are other ways to do it but it seemed to work.
If you want to blacken all your hardware like I did:
1 Remove all the zinc coating by soaking in white vinegar overnight.
    2 Wire brush everything
3 Clean with acetone or degreaser
    4 Apply the Cold Blue
    5 Rinse with water
Repeat 4&5 until it’s dark enough
    6 wipe down with oil

Momma wanted me to take the label off. I said, "no way, someone will comment".

For all the trouble to make a blade from an allen wrench, it would have been a better use of resources to just buy a blade. A manufactured blade is also square.

If I could have bought one that would allow me fine adjust and a depth stop I would have.

Almost every commercially made router plane on the market has fine adjustment.

Do a search for replacement router blades. They run from 10 to 20 bucks.

Making something from scratch like this has many benefits, the first one being just learning, thinking about details of what you want. It’s rewarding and fun and that has value in addition to getting a tool you will use. How do you know what is “better?”
