I am 74 years old Indian woman. I have always been a BIG fan of Rafi sahib from very young age. I still listen to his songs and just immerse myself in appreciating the intricacies of his voice and diction. I actually go into a trans when I listen to certain songs of his. I agree with the general consensus that there never was a singer like him and never will be in the future. What makes me very sad is that after my days, my children will never know such a great artist in their life time since they have grown up in a different era. I cherish every song he has sung with such deep emotion whether sad, romantic, or fun.

I was just 5 years when the legend Mohd. Rafi expired. At that age I did not understand why there is so much chaos everywhere and when his funeral passed by from the streets of Bombay, I remember It looked like there is someone too beloved has gone and can’t be back anymore. Everywhere weeping faces. I too cried looking at them and I remember my elder brother had took me and my siblings walking along with the janazah from Bandra to Juhu. May Allah grant this beautiful soul, maghfirah and highest rank in Jannah. 😔

I was not a fan of Mohd. Rafi sahab, but once I was hearing his song " aaj mausum bara baimaan hai" on screen hero was Dharmendra Ji. It seemed to me that Dharmendra Ji is singing. Believe me or not I heard it more than 10 time's that day. Later I started hearing Rafi sahab. I believe he is the best playback singer ever. He is a class of his own. His song will live forever in our hearts.
Rafi's parellal is hard to be found. Worlds' heart winner, Number 1 amongst male singers. He has rightly brought out Rafi sahab's associations with so many great music directors of the 1950s and 1960s that has left for us a unique treasure trove of Bollywood music. It's another matter that successive governments in New Delhi have failed to honour him with an award which he so richly deserved - the Bharat Ratna.
Javed sahib salute to you for paying such rich tribute to great voice of India. But one great fact you missed Sir, is that Rafi Sahib was a true Punjabi. He was highest paid playback singer in India. But he sang many songs for Punjabi movies also but never charged even a penny ever for that. It was his greatness and true love for his mother tongue. HE was great and remain so for ever.

I'm just 20,and this video i just watch it randomly.when I saw this, I was just shocked and cried. How can a singer can sing like this with so much ease, with so much feeling, when I heard din dhal jaaye, I literally got chills all over my body, that song was out of this world, that feeling🤯😭. Mohd Rafi was a singer who knew what playback singing means. He had the talent to adjust and improvise his voice not only to the situation of the film but also to suit the personality of the hero or the character to whom he was supposed to render his voice. His voice had depth, resonance and feeling which some of his predecessors lacked or couldn't exhibit in their songs. It would not be incorrect to say that he taught the singers how playback singing should be. It is heartening to see how modern singers follow his method of singing.

JoyBangIa kishoreda seems to have deceptively stolen songs which should have gone to mahendra kapoorji. So bad and he refused to sing until paid in advance and refused to return the cricket balls of us poor children at that time
So much variation is his songs .Rafi was the greatest singer of all times i believe.I think no one has achieved such perfection in singing which he did.As a child i could not understand the greatness of his songs but as i grew up i began to understand and appreciate his greatness and perfection.At times i believe his songs touch souls.Whatever song he sung he put magic in it turned it into inspiration , a hit not only for his generation but also for us .His songs had that Midas touch.That time was also when music and song lyrics were very good.All the singers, musicians, actors were sincere at that time.

Mohmmad Rafi's singing looked easy, simple. He made it look like that. Lata Mangeshkar who said to have some differences with Rafi admitted that when she was her wit's end puzzed how to sing one song " paav chhoo lo to foolonku inayat hogi" which she found difficult to sing. She was scared that she would not be able to hold her breathe while singing the first line of the song, then when she approaced Mohammed Rafi for guidnace, he gave her confidence showing how to hold and release breathe while singing this particular song! Very gentle, docile, kind-hearted who was the greatst singet too made Indians proud ane obliged to sing for them immortal songs, God Bless Him!
Kamalakant Chitnis I do not think Lataji would have turned for help to Rafi for the song you are referring to.Firstly in the same film Lataji had sung Jurm e ulfat pe which required more breath control. Secondly, the relationship between both the singers had already soured by this stage given that Salil Choudhary had sided with the Nightingale over one song in Chhaya(1961) and Rafi had not forgotten that. Thirdly, Rafi's own breath control is nuts compared to Mangeshkar sisters. Want proof. Listen carefully to Gunguna rahe hain bhanwre from Aradhana and you would understand what I mean.
Mr Taan sen jiii, u have no idea what breath control is. The modulation in voice is directly linked with breath control. We all know on higher notes Rafi voice was incomparable, you would never see his voice quality deteriorated on higher notes instead get more melodious, on the other hand the rest of singers could do full justice only the songs requiring low notes. You are a true singer only if you have control on higher notes without losing the melody.

A well-produced documentary on that powerhouse of talent called Mohammed Rafi with some excellent observations by Javed Akhtar. He has rightly brought out Rafi sahab's associations with so many great music directors of the 1950s and 1960s that has left for us a unique treasure trove of Bollywood music. It's another matter that successive governments in New Delhi have failed to honour him with an award which he so richly deserved - the Bharat Ratna.
Javed sahib salute to you for paying such rich tribute to great voice of India. But one great fact you missed Sir, is that Rafi Sahib was a true Punjabi. He was highest paid playback singer in India. But he sang many songs for Punjabi movies also but never charged even a penny ever for that. It was his greatness and true love for his mother tongue. HE was great and remain so for ever.

How can a singer can sing like this with so much ease, with so much feeling, when I heard din dhal jaaye, I literally got chills all over my body, that song was out of this world, that feeling🤯😭. Mohd Rafi was a singer who knew what playback singing means. He had the talent to adjust and improvise his voice not only to the situation of the film but also to suit the personality of the hero or the character to whom he was supposed to render his voice. His voice had depth, resonance and feeling which some of his predecessors lacked or couldn't exhibit in their songs. It would not be incorrect to say that he taught the singers how playback singing should be. It is heartening to see how modern singers follow his method of singing.

A beautiful tribute to a timeless voice by Javed Akhtar-I fully agree with every word of his commentary.Apart from his beautiful God gifted voice, he used to change & innovate to suit various artists,situations & music directors.He was a,NON CONTROVERSIAL & KIND human being too.He was also a DEVOUT muslim & a pukka family man but at the same time a PATRIOT too.He excelled especially under O.P.Nayyar & Shankar-Jaikishan for Shammi Kapoor & Johnny Walker.His premature death was a big blow to the film industry.There can't be another RAFI EVER!

I had an opportunity to see his live programme in kolkatta some time in 1978. It sad he didn't get Bharat Rajan which entertains.only deserves
So much variation is his songs .Rafi was the greatest singer of all times i believe.I think no one has achieved such perfection in singing which he did.As a child i could not understand the greatness of his songs but as i grew up i began to understand and appreciate his greatness and perfection.At times i believe his songs touch souls.Whatever song he sung he put magic in it turned it into inspiration , a hit not only for his generation but also for us .His songs had that Midas touch.That time was also when music and song lyrics were very good.All the singers, musicians, actors were sincere at that time.

Mohmmad Rafi's singing looked easy, simple. He made it look like that. Lata Mangeshkar who said to have some differences with Rafi admitted that when she was her wit's end puzzed how to sing one song " paav chhoo lo to foolonku inayat hogi" which she found difficult to sing. She was scared that she would not be able to hold her breathe while singing the first line of the song, then when she approaced Mohammed Rafi for guidnace, he gave her confidence showing how to hold and release breathe while singing this particular song! Very gentle, docile, kind-hearted who was the greatst singet too made Indians proud ane obliged to sing for them immortal songs, God Bless Him!
Kamalakant Chitnis I do not think Lataji would have turned for help to Rafi for the song you are referring to.Firstly in the same film Lataji had sung Jurm e ulfat pe which required more breath control. Secondly, the relationship between both the singers had already soured by this stage given that Salil Choudhary had sided with the Nightingale over one song in Chhaya(1961) and Rafi had not forgotten that. Thirdly, Rafi's own breath control is nuts compared to Mangeshkar sisters. Want proof. Listen carefully to Gunguna rahe hain bhanwre from Aradhana and you would understand what I mean.

Mr Taan sen jiii, u have no idea what breath control is. The modulation in voice is directly linked with breath control. We all know on higher notes Rafi voice was incomparable, you would never see his voice quality deteriorated on higher notes instead get more melodious, on the other hand the rest of singers could do full justice only the songs requiring low notes. You are a true singer only if you have control on higher notes without losing the melody.
