A simple top.
I started this system in the Summer of last year and have made a few things but have decided to go back to basics and make a simple top now I understand the system a little better. I have had a few requests for more videos so I hope you find this one interesting.

Looks great Carole. I bought the Lutterloh system decades ago. I initially went to a class where they were selling it, more like a sales seminar. After I purchased the system I realized how much they “didn’t” say. I’m afraid I wasted my money. I so appreciate your time and efforts in explaining it. How different things are with UA-cam. I used to sew dresses from commercial patterns. Most often I needed to take some sewing classes to really be successful. I am learning these patterns from UA-cam.

Hi, Carole! As with any art medium, there are so many ideas about how to proceed. I find your personal touches to each one of these patterns are quite nice. Lutterloh is interesting. I am starting to think that it gives you a foundation piece to do with as you please. Of course sewing experience is a must plus a calm demeanor letting each step unfold. I think you are right re the foundation pieces as I've seen so many variances of all these patterns on forums but I think that is the same for all sewing patterns. That is probably why if we can sew our own garments then we like to put our own 'stamp' on it 😊. Patience and being calm is always needed in sewing but I can't promise I always deliver on that! Sometimes you just want to scream don't you 🤣. Thanks again.

Go on, give it a go!!! Honestly I think you would like it and you aren't like me, you don't follow the rules to the letter 😂, you have intuition and experience 😊. I won't be wearing cropped trousers until March I don't think but you are right on the white trousers or shorts. Thanks 😘😘
Very interesting pattern making system. I'd never heard of it before, so this was quite an interesting video. I was very intriqued the entire time you were marking and drawing out the pattern. Your top came out very nice! Love the fabric pattern and the white around the neck and sleeve hole. Great make!
Thanks Dori, the plotting bit is definitely fun and a challenge! I am always amazed how it creates a pattern piece correct for you size with just a magic tape measure. The white worked out in the end didn't it, I really wasn't sure as I was going along! Thanks for commenting 😊👚

Ha ha thank you Grace, you are too kind ☺️. It is a fun system but it certainly won't ever replace a nice Big 4 pattern! Hi Carole, I just found your channel and I am so glad I did. I purchased this system several years ago and then went on eBay and bought some vintage pattern books (much cheaper) I can't thank you enough for recommending the switch to the upper bust measurement for the shoulders...I didn't even think of doing that...absolutely genius. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to more of your Lutterloh journey.

Thanks Izzy, that top was one of those makes which I really wasn't sure of all the way along but I think with white trousers or shorts it could look really good. I don't often make V necks as they always seem to come low on me but this one didn't 👏. It is a fun way of making a pattern 😊

Thank you Anne, the seam allowance ruler I bought from Etsy and came from the US (ShopStitchBuzz) we don't have anything here like it and I had seen it on another channel. They didn't cost much to buy but loads in postage for me 😟, fabulous things though!

I have only made one top so far, it was a bit long on me and I am 5ft 7in tall. I plan on making more pieces this year.

Sewing voodoo 😂. This is the first time I have heard of this system. It reminds me of making a sloper, which I did for a costuming class I took. That was very complicated this seems a lot easier. You set yourself a good challenge, it turned out very nice too.
Oh that did make me laugh, it is kind of mystical isn't it 🤣. The plotting bit is definitely fun to do and somehow when you've joined the dots it's a pattern! Thank you Vicki. It is quite easy to make mistakes with this system. So many things to go wrong, the tape slipping when marking out, using the wrong measurements for the wrong bit, forgetting the seam allowance... the list is endless but it is fun to do and a challenge 🤣. Hi Carole! You have become so proficient with the Lutterloh system. I know I couldn't do it. Although...it seems like with a system like this, you get a well-fitting piece of clothing as a result and that is such a big issue for me. I'm taking a couple of fitting classes at the upcoming Expo in Lakeland. Trust me, I'll be taking good notes. I learned a few things about fitting over the last year but I know I've got a lot more to learn. You did a really nice job on that top you made and the white trim is perfect on it. Hi Deb, I am proficient with the drawing, just not with the working out how to make it up, hence I choose simple patterns 😂. Fitting is something I know nothing about so those classes sound really interesting, let me know how you get on. I suppose I am fortunate that most of the big four patterns are ok on me, having said that T Shirts are becoming more of an issue😟. It is a fun system but I would only ever use it now and again. There are several different "fitting sytstems" or techniques it seems. I know of the fit nice system; the SureFit system and the Palmer-Pleitsch (sp?) I've never used any of them really because I tend to choose patterns from the Big 4. I want to find one that works well for me though.
When I was younger, the Big 4 patterns used to fit me very nicely. All I had to do was choose the size and it was a good fit. Those days are long gone, I'm afraid.
It's a good thing that I'm always open to learning new things!

Hi Carole, Great Vlog! Thanks I've had this System since the 1980's thanks for going through the ( How to ) of this system. Also have you ever watched Karina's ( Lifting Pins and Needles) UA-cam channel. She has very detailed information on Neck bands and measurements instructions, with different amounts of stretch in your fabrics. She is very good at V- Neck instructions, and Bias binding also. I’ve enjoyed these videos about using the Lutterloh system very much. Many years ago, about 2005, I was researching whether to get Lutterloh or Sure-fit designs. I decided to get Sure Fit Designs, and I’ve used it several times, even also to make Pajama trousers for a grandson. The Sure Fit helps you draw out a basic “block” master pattern, from which you create pieces for various styles of garments. I like that Lutterloh helps you draw out pattern pieces for a specific style. And that is why I end up just buying a commercial paper pattern so often, to have the specific pieces for a certain style.
My question for you and also any commenters who use Lutterloh, is, what do you think, after using ready made patterns and Lutterloh? Which do you prefer? Does Lutterloh give you a better fit? Can you “mix and match” pieces to create another style garment? What about people who are “out of proportion” due to weight gain or loss? I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Hi there. First of all thanks for watching. I was given the Lutterloh system from my Mother and when I researched into it I thought the concept was that with 2 measurements , perfect fit would be achieved. Now I am by no means an expert but so far all the patterns I have made have needed some tweaking. I had been told to use the upper bust measurement and lower for narrow shoulders and I did that on my last make. It was sort of better? But I'm not convinced. I am on a Facebook forum for Lutterloh and many people face problems with fit on there. Some saying that patterns need an FBA etc. That to me destroys the concept of a perfect fit with two measurements.
Having said all that, I do love using the system every now and again, plotting it out etc and I would never stop using it as my Mother felt so guilty for buying it back in the 70's and never using it. It will never take the place of paper patterns for me and actually, quite often the styles of the supplements are too formal for my lifestyle. Of course the huge stumbling block with Lutterloh is that there are no instructions!
I have heard others talk about surefit and their success so I was interested to hear how you find it.

@@socarole66 thank you for answering. The Sure-Fit method gives you a good sloper and is not complicated. They have a lot of you tube videos that show you how to do the basic process and tell you how to tweak it to fit better, such as measuring back shoulder to shoulder, neck to the bone on your shoulder and then how to personalize it, etc. Just as with ready made patterns, you often need to do bust adjustments or rear-end or tummy or crotch adjustments, etc. I am 5’1” and ALWAYS have to shorten everything. But I am not easy to fit like when I first sewed for myself. I took pattern drafting classes on Craftsy and also on Creativebug, and although I rarely draft myself a garment, those helped a LOT with altering paper patterns to fit. The drafting principles helped me understand how to measure a pattern piece and how much ease is in any given pattern. Sometimes loose patterns (like peasant tops, for example) have a lot more ease than you want and fit like a sack - or sometimes a form fitting pattern needs more ease for you - principles of drafting help you know how recognize and fix those things. My big problem right now is necklines. I have narrow shoulders and have frequently made scoop necks that are way too low (as in showing underwear!) No “system” will fix that, I just need to learn how to know where the pattern line will come on my body. I am 72 and have been sewing since I was 16, and still have a lot to learn. Great video. I thought about buying this system, but think it's too expensive for me. I am keeping a watch out for it at 2nd hand shops. I've seen a few people find them there.

There is a small drawing in the pattern pieces area of the back of the sewn patterned for each pattern that helps you visualize the finished product.

The Surefit system by Glenda Sparling is somewhat similar in concept. I’m working on pants now. You should check it out. It’s a dot to dot measurements of your bods. They have a dress kit, pants kit, shirt kit and children’s kit. Basically your making a block. Your makes look lovely
I think I have seen that Surefit system on another channel or if not, something really similar. I sew mainly the big 4 but as I said in my video I wanted to use the Lutterloh system because my Mother always felt guilty for not using it! I will check out that system as I am intrigued. Hope your pants work out well!👖
I tried the Surefit system, and failed miserably. I had to make lots of adjustments to the pattern, and the crotch curve was particularly tricky. Lutterloh is magic. Everything seems to fit and that pesky crotch curve is perfect for me.
@@janettechapple1782 My back crotch length is so much longer than the front so when using SFD for pants, it turned out wonky.

Hi Deb, unfortunately with this style of top I didn't get a definitive answer but I have to say it didn't gape at all or hang off the shoulders like it could have done. I will definitely do it again though as others say it makes a difference. Thanks for watching. 😊
This is an interesting system. For someone that doesn't enjoy tracing it looks like a lot of work though 🤣 The top came out great and looks like it fits well. Do you think you get a better fit using the system than using a Big 4 pattern? Funny observation - the dress in the line drawing looks exactly like a dress review I'm posting tomorrow haha!
Hi Michelle, great observation on the dress as back last year Jen was trying to create a dress to look like that and I showed her that one!! It is a lot of work hence I don't use it very often and I'm not sure on the fitting as the trousers I made last year needed a lot of tweaking whereas my big 4 ones don't. That could be my plotting though 🤣. I just like to use the system every now and again as my Mum has been guilty her whole life on not using it and it cost so much! I've made the shorts from that same pattern. They are my absolute favorite shorts I own. The shirt looks great too. I'll have to make it too.

Maybe if you put stabiliser on the neckline as well it might be easier

Hi Carol, I also, have used the Lutterloh system a bit. And I almost always end up having to make the neck area smaller. I am going to try the upper bust measurement when I do my next garment. Hello Vicki, I did a couple of tops in the summer that had darts and they didn't really fit me on the shoulders. Someone suggested using the different measurement but because this was an easy fit top I suppose it didn't really answer my question. What I should do is go back and revisit one of the woven tops I did last year to answer your question. I will say though, it certainly didn't do any harm and the top fitted really well. Hi there. Thanks for watching. I buy the latest issues from Lutterloh direct on their website. They come from Germany I think so not sure where you live or if that would be practical for you in cost. I suppose it is always worth checking EBay etc. hope you have success with it 😊

Hi there. No the system doesn't have separate instructions, well not the copy that my Mum gave me. There are general bits you can find on the Lutterloh Facebook page and in the manual that came with it. I think the newer systems come with DVDs etc but nothing for each garment. That is the main stumbling block of the whole process, you have to have a good knowledge of sewing and the order of sewing pieces. This is exactly why I choose easy patterns! I also have about 1000 paper patterns which I could use for reference if I got stuck. The Lutterloh Facebook page is so helpful as there are many experts on there that advise when people get stuck. Could you explain the numbers on the front. It gives the pattern number and the type of fabric that you can use but then it gives more details such as 150 x 100cm but I can’t find what those numbers mean?
Hi there, thanks so much for watching. Those numbers are the approximate fabric requirements needed in centimetres but they are based on a 37" bust and 40" hip. I would suggest that if you have other patterns or in fact if you find a pattern online in a similar style taking the fabric requirements from that. The Lutterloh System facebook group is so helpful for any questions that you have, I have learnt a lot from there. Good luck 🧵😊
Does the system tell you how much ease there is and is is made for b cups and any bigger would need fba
Thanks for watching. I'm afraid I can't really answer your question as I'm not actually sure what adding ease means. The pattern system is meant to be using your exact measurements so shouldn't be needed as I understand it but many people contradict that. The idea is with just two measurements, bust and hip you get the perfect fit? But I actually have to use my upper bust, full bust and hip as I am narrow shouldered. What you do yourself is add whatever seam allowance you like. If you are interested in the system there is a Facebook group with many experts on there and this question has been asked a lot of times. I never seem to have to add anything in Commercial patterns hence why I am unsure what 'Ease' actually involves. Sorry I can't be more help but I am only a beginner in this system as I often say!

How do you adjust the bust point?
Hi there. This pattern didn't have darts luckily and it is not an issue I have normally with standard patterns. There is an amazing Facebook group for Lutterloh where there are lots of experienced sewists on that answer questions, they may be able to answer your query. Thanks for watching
Doesn’t photocopying the pattern distort the measurements of the pattern?
Thanks for your comment. You would think that wouldn't you but apparently not and in fact some people enlarge the pattern and it still works. You are only measuring from a cross in the centre so it doesn't matter if the copy is different to the original. Does that make sense?
I’m in the USA. Does it come in inches too?
Hello there, sadly I don't think it does as it is a German country and they are metric only over there! It wouldn't matter though as you just follow the holes and numbers on the tape. You can then add your seam allowances in inches like I do. Thanks for watching. 😊
Does it matter what size the photo copied piece is?
As the pattern is photocopied it replicates the exact size. It isn't like printing a PDF where you have to print Actual size. Thanks for a brilliant question! 👏🏼😊🧵
