    Have you tried the Haslam system?

    • @JulieAnnGilman
      @JulieAnnGilman Рік тому +1

      Yes I have. I’m full busted and I didn’t change a thing.

      No, this is the first time I have heard of it. It reminds me of 'another' system I have seen on UA-cam.

    I inherited my grandmothers Haslam system with a couple of the pattern books and am delighted to find this as I didn’t know how to use them. She trained as a dressmaker under this system and was a wonderful dressmaker for 70 years

      Oh my goodness! What a treasure! I'm delighted that you're joining me on this journey so you can take advantage of the system.

    Joanne Limonova was awesome at explaining the system. She actually made me think I could do this. Some of the Haslam books are available on Amazon as well.

    You are the best i have found at guiding me through this season. Where's the next video? I've never made clothes from a pattern, much less all this DIY pattern making and im trying to make a gown for a work function. I'm not sure i can keep going on my own!!

      Thank you for your kind words! Alas, "life" (aka, spending hours in a bureaucracy vortex) has gotten in the way of being able to finish up the next video. So, fingers crossed, you will have the next video within the next week or so.

    Thank you, Julie-Ann! I have never made a basic bloc garment. It looks interesting! I like the idea of not being dependent on purchased patterns.

    Hi everyone.
    I just stopped by this channel out of curiosity. Not sure how it came up, TBH. The title sounded interesting, but the comments caught my eye and, well, I love the comments :) this sounds like a fun channel to be following. You all sound chilled and lovely to be around. So, here I am! I am going to watch the videos

    Yes. I love it, it worked for me. I’m not plus-sized but have a full bust.

      First, I may be a bit biased, but I think you have a great name! Is yours hyphenated like mine or all one word (I'm always surprised by how many databases can't handle a hyphen and turn my name into one joined together name).
      Anywho, thank you for mentioning that you're not plus-sized. Obviously I am but I love how this system seems to work for all figures on the continuum of sizes.

      I tell people that the only reason I married my husband was so that I could have a name that rhymes--Julie-Ann McFann 😆 🥰 (Well, and he's cute and kills bugs...)

    If we are not able to find dotted paper for patterns is it possible to use the back of wrapping paper that has dots?

    • @themodernretrowoman
      @themodernretrowoman  Рік тому +3

      Absolutely. You don’t even need the dots. I just like them because I think they help me. I have used giant graph paper found in the easel pad section of the office supply store, too, but it is more expensive than the pattern making dot paper. Also, don’t forget that I put a link in the description box for dot paper that I bought via Etsy. But there’s lots of sellers who offer different lengths and sizes on Etsy at different price points if you want to try the dotted paper route.
      Great question! I’m glad you asked because you probably aren’t the only one who is wondering the same thing ❤️

    Hi Julie-Ann. Just found your video and of course I will subscribe so I can find the next part of your Haslam series. But there is a question. Since I'm 5'1" and plus-size my figure fits no norm. Does this drafting system works also for me? My 'waist' is bigger than my bust and hips.

    • @themodernretrowoman
      @themodernretrowoman  Рік тому +2

      Yes. Absolutely. I’m 5’3 and plus sized, too. I think we have to tweak the foundation a little but once we do, then we can create beautiful clothes that work for our figures instead of trying to work our figures into clothing. ❤️

    I just found your UA-cam channel. And I must say it’s very interesting. I’ve been watching a lot of videos about re-creation of old garments. Such as full circle skirts and walking skirts. I have not heard of this pattern system before but I do have a different one, that I probably bought 40 years ago and never used. sometimes life just gets in the way, but I’m retired now. I was wondering about your dress form. if you feel that one is necessary? and it appears to be hard to find a fluffy dress forms. That doesn’t cost $400 .Do you have a recommendation?

    • @themodernretrowoman
      @themodernretrowoman  Рік тому +1

      I find that having a dress form is helpful but I know that not everyone has one so I'm trying to create the Haslam foundation without one. But to answer your question about mine, I made the dress form--you can see my adventures making it here: ua-cam.com/video/colaEzQhwhE/v-deo.html
      I've been slowly but surely losing weight for health reasons so my form currently doesn't match my figure (another reason I'm doing the Haslam foundation without a dress form) but I'll be making a long-line bra in a "coming soon" video. I'm hoping that I can use the mock-up of it to squish the dress form to match my figure again. Ultimately, I'm going to have to make a new dress form.

    I have dyspraxia and I don't know if I will be able to get my crazy brain around the mad jigsaw puzzle that is drafting (or anything)

    Which era did you use? These instructions seem different than the ones I used

    • @themodernretrowoman

      I used the early 1940s foundation with the fuller figure adjustments. I bought the foundation instructions from Mrs Depew.

      Thank you for your kind words! I just published a new video. When I made the last video, I didn't know that I'd figuratively hit the wall with my health and that it would take me months to have the energy to do the next one! But, fear not, I'm still here!
