- We hiked to a glacier in Juneau, Alaska!
Welcome to the capital of Alaska. We docked in the city for the entire day but after exploring it for 30 minutes, we decided to take a bus to see Mendenhall Glacier. Similar to Ketchikan, Juneau had many of the same jewelry stores and Alaskan souvenir stores in addition to a few of its government building since it’s the state’s capital after all. Instead of spending $45 for a tour bus to the glacier, we decided to take public transit for only $2 (and only $1 for seniors and people under 18). The ride was 50 minutes with a few stops, but we had a very entertaining bus driver who told jokes and basically gave everyone on the bus a guided tour throughout the scenic trip (16 miles and a different driver also conversed with everyone while coming back). The bus dropped us off at the edge of the national Tongass forest so after a 30 mins walk, we were at the glacier. Another 30 min hike down Nugget Falls Trail led us to Nugget Falls where you can walk right to the base from the beach. What an awesome day trip and we still made it back to the cruise ship for lunch!
This is episode 2 of 5 as part of an Alaskan series I’m making to preserve the memories from our trip because we’re not going to remember what we did in 5 years if I don’t! - Навчання та стиль
I was born there, I miss it so much. I moved down to New Mexico, this place was my home, and it got ripped away from me in an instant. spent 11 years of my life in Juneau. I loved it.😢
I was just there a few days ago. The locals get Soooooo pissed when cruise ship passengers use public transit. I used it too.
But it clogs it up and they can’t get to and from work…
I mostly used cabs. They’re cheap enough. Uber is basically nonexistent.
Public buses are fine to take lol Just be prepared to packed in like a sardine if its during rush hour XD 5th gen Juneau resident here.
Yeah, avoid the jewelry stores. They are owned by the cruise companies and do not help local businesses or the local economy.
I think they’re there for the men that spontaneously decide they need to pop the question on their vacation but didn’t buy a ring in advance
Awesome! Just came back from there too! Wonderful memories!
We did the same thing 2 weeks ago! Great vid!
heading there in a few days. flying up from Seattle. we did not get to see the glacier as our cruise ship last year only spent 5 hours and we did the mush dogs that took 4 hours
When I was young, the mendenhall glacier was up against the nugget falls.
I’m in Chicago and I wanna visit Alaska so bad :/
I miss it there... use to live 5 minutes away
Was there any fishing guides there? Planning to yo in June (no pun intended)
How long did it take to bus and hike to the glazier! Our ship arrives in Juneau at 2 p.m. and departs at 10 pm! So time will be tight!
I swear that same porcupine was in that same tree when I did that hike last month. Maybe that's his main tree or something
Porcupines and trees mate for life
We love this! Can we reshare on our social channels with credit? :)

Omg hey I live in Juneau
I’m doing a month in Juneau, likely moving. I’m from PNW and don’t need acclimating, any tips! ?🎉
Same, born and raised:)))
excuse me but how did you manage to only pay $2.50 instead of 45?? im going there in 4 days
We took public transportation, not a guided tour!
@@cuppabeans oh got you, thanks
if you take the $2.50 public transportation, be prepared to walk an extra 2 mi to visitor center. I wish you would mention that in the video.
@@zacharynicholls47 we took it to downtown it was great, uber from the airport to downtown costs 30, 35 by regular taxi
Yeah, it's a long walk because they don't have enough people to run the bus all the way to the glacier like they used to. I think it's 2 miles each way to walk to the glacier park entrance and then another mile to Nugget Falls. If you have the time and want to get some walking in, go ahead. But definitely have a rain coat and good walking shoes. You have to try to get lost.
i live hear
I flew on top of the glacier. Expensive but, worth it.
