Tesla Model 3 Wheel Covers | Efficiency Shocker
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- I did some testing with the Tesla Model 3 wheel covers to see if an aftermarket wheel could be as good as the OEM Aero cover in terms of efficiency.
While this Uberturbine style wheel cover from TSportline looks awesome, and is a huge improvement over the base 18" Aero covers, I was a little concerned with the efficiency hit I'd end up taking doing an upgrade.
Follow along as we work through the upgrade, and conduct multiple tests measuring the efficiency of the base Aero cover compared to the Uberturbine style wheel cover.

Looks better and performs just as well. Nice! Thanks for sharing this vid.
Turbine covers it's harder to remove it I had on my 2024 Tesla 3 and my efficiency dropped vs OEM one but looks nicer I end up putting OEM back because easier to remove
Turbine-style looks great!
Such a good alternative to the ugly original wheel covers. Good to see there isn’t much big difference between efficiency. Do u regret not switching earlier
No regrets. Was waiting to get through the winter months before I did anything. I do think they look a lot better.
Neither look great but the new ones do look better. Without either cover at all looks even better.
It's so subjective. I seriously thought about going that route. I think the rims look better than the stock Aero caps, but I like the Uberturbine look a bit more. The nice thing is if I change my mind, I just pop these covers off.
@@mywifestesla I see Tesla sells a center cap kit option too which looks pretty good. Like you note, easy to change out and not too expensive.
At 1:08 I see that all four are the same, so they turn "the wrong way" on one side of the car (same as uberturbine). Or do they provide 2+2?
They look a lot better, but those rims are pretty nice with no covers!
Agree. Been thinking of pulling the covers off and going with just the rims.
@@mywifestesla the one thing that kind of sucks is when you take the covers off you’ll notice the wheels have little scratches everywhere the clips attach.
I hated the stock ones and took them off the day I bought them almost 5 years ago. I just bought some turbines like yours off amazon for $140 and got them in a day or two at the most, the look great and were easy to install. you should have done a test with factory wheels and no caps for a reference. I have zero care about the efficiency, its all about the look.
Wet wheel is kinda sneaky when doing the side by side 🤣. That said the turbines look much cooler.
Honestly wasn’t trying to be sneaky. Didn’t have a better shot. Agree they do look better.
I have same cover from tsportline. Does it matter which direction these are installed? Some websites describe these as directional covers.
Thank you for a very useful video you posted. Question, how is the built quality side by side to aero covers, which are OEM?
The Aero covers are OEM and came on the vehicle. They're both plastic, so if you're going to ram them into a curb, I'm sure they won't hold up. I can tell you I haven't had any problems with the new Uberturbine covers in the last month that they've been on my M3.
Thanks! I just ordered a set. Did you notice any additional wind noise? I’ve been running without the Aero caps so I don’t have anything to compare it to.
No additional wind noise that’s noticeable.
I got these wheel caps too but they scratch so easily and pop off when hitting a curb
Luckily, I haven't experienced that yet.
Did they have these for the model Y
Yes they had them for the Model Y and they are holding up great. Best of all no crazy rattling sounds.
@@mywifestesla do u have a link for them buddy?
Check the link in the video description. The one I left there will get you an additional discount if you use that code.
@@mywifestesla does it come with the Tesla logo in the box for the center cap I didn’t see that on their website?
I just purchased the same covers and was wondering why they don’t make them directional. The “turbine” is essentially reversed on one side. Wouldn’t that affect performance?
Yep. Wondering the same. I’m sure it has some impact on efficiency, but I haven’t really noticed it.
i was wondering what is the right direction the covers should be on, left or right side? Do you know?
Honestly, I don't know if it really matters. I believe the OEM covers from Tesla work the same way.
Very useful video!
Did you ever run without covers on your commute? Wonder what your SOC would be if bare- wheeling it.
I haven't. It's on my list to do as I'm interested in that as well.
Turbine!
Since you live in Michigan can you tell me the total cost with the tax, fees and resignation fee? I’m picking up my Tesla this week and also from the Detroit area
Congrats on the new Tesla. Tax was a flat 6% on the vehicle price. Destination fee was $1200, no other transportation or carrier fees. Registration was just over $300, which included titling, transfer, and electronic filing. Keep in mind, your registration fee could be different based on when your birthday happens to fall.
@@mywifestesla thanks! I’m loving the 2023 model 3 RWD so far! And that silver is amazing in person! Thank you for your videos! It help me decide to buy a Tesla! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words. Congrats again. Great choice on the color 😉
I went on the website and it doesn’t say that it comes with Tesla logo caps can you please explain I’m trying to buy these????
They definitely came with mine.
@@mywifestesla I just ordered them and I didn’t see them in the package but then I noticed they were at the very bottom of the box. Thank God they came with them. Thank you so much for all your help may God bless your family. 💜
if you dint know half of you hub cabs are backwards they will use more emergency
Thanks, a few others have pointed that out as well. The problem is they are all designed the same, they are not symmetrical. While the two on the left side of the car are installed correctly, the two on the right will be backwards.
@@mywifestesla i was able to find a pair that was directional i was able to get 15 miles added to the car .
Confirmed - all 4 are designed the same @@mywifestesla
@@armandourendadrafting7562where did you get them from?
@@mywifesteslaUh, no they won’t!!
Do you have a baseline comparison to no wheel covers?
I don’t. Something I’m planning to do.
Have you done the same test(s) without wheel covers?
I did not, mainly because going with just the rims wasn't something I was thinking about. Great idea, maybe I'll take a look at doing that.
DO THESE COME WITH THE TESLA CENTER CAPS OR DO YOU NEED TO ORDER THEM SEPARATELY?????
How fast did you get the wheel covers?
I got them within a week of ordering. Ordered on a Thu and had them the following Tue or Wed.
The main information you need to know is the overall weight of the wheel tyres used on the same surface being tested, because that dictates how much effort the motor needs to use to turn the wheel. The lighter the wheel and tyre, the less work required to turn it. The grippier the tyre, the greater the resistance snd thus the more energy required to turn the wheel.
The is nithing wrong with steel rims, especially if they’re covered with hub caps/covers, as the steel rim can weigh less than many alloy wheels.
Trying to improve efficiency without knowing the weights, is pointless!
Yea, agree with you. I know my method was pretty unscientific, but it got me in the ballpark. Thanks for sharing.
I think they are on backwards 5:07
Now you’ve got me wondering.
They are. They may have L or R on the inside. Curved portion of the blades should face toward the front of the car.
Thanks. I'll have to look at that.
@@iamakinupe9215 No, the original ones are also all the same with different directions L +R
Why use cover at all, as long as you don’t need the longest range possible? - The rims looks best without cover.
imagine paying out thousands of $$$ for alloys just to put stupid looking plastic covers over them...let's all buy EV's with alloys and plastic covers over them.
How about, don't buy expensive alloys and expensive stupid looking plastic covers and buy good old steel wheels and your efficiency will be even better. SORTED...
The added weight of the steel wheels make the vehicle less efficient.
