By using half square triangles on the edges you are putting a bias edge along the outside, you're going to get stretching when doing the binding etc and have a wonky quilt. If you used bigger squares and cut quarter square triangles for the triangles round the edges then it would give a better end result.
Enjoyed the tutorial on Side Step quilt! For those that are beginners I think it would help if you explained the direction of putting the blocks together in rows are done on "diagonal" or " on point". Just a thought so beginners learn the terminology for future quilt projects. Like the fabrics

You should cut your 10 inch squares down to 8 1/2 by 10 inches first so that you will get piece that is 1 1/2 by 10 inches left over. These pieces are great for scrappy log cabin blocks or step pieced blocks.

Nice quilt but I would suggest using quarter square triangles instead of half square triangles on the ends of your rows. The way you cut them you have made the entire outside of your quilt a bias edge and it will be very prone to stretching and waving.
@@sueoferrell7673 a half square triangle is cut from a square with one diagonal cut, so the straight grain is on the 2 short sides and the long side is on the true bias. A quarter square triangle is cut from a square by making 2 diagonal cuts. This puts the straight grain on the long side and the bias on the 2 short sides. When making quilts it’s best practice to put straight grain on the outside of your blocks, and especially to have straight grain on the outside of your quilt because bias is easily stretched. There are helpers online to calculate the size square you need to make quarter square setting triangles based on your block size.
@@darrenjones4314 thank you for clarifying, I get it now. I will look up a chart. I made a yellow brick road Hawaiian bedspread on the diagonal but wasn't sure how to finish if I made the edges straight, not jagged. I DID know I didn't want the bias edge, even on those small triangles.

Cute design...One question- why not just use 1/2 of a 10" square - ie 5" X 10" ?
That’s what I was thinking. No waste at all that way. And easier to cut in 1/2

@@SewYeah What is the answer? Just reading this for the first time and I don't know the answer. Why not just cut the layer cake in half for a 5 x 10?
