  • Note: I removed the felt-covered guide plate at the beginning of May when I seeded the last bed of pelleted carrot seed and I didn't replace it after that when later seeding spinach and lettuce. I assume that the felt-covered guide plate was still installed when I seeded the first two beds of raw carrot seed.

Thinning carrots is literally a pain in the butt. After many years experimenting with different seeders, I now seed the carrots by hand. There are a few varieties that have relatively large seed, and after ten years of seeding by hand I can do it extremely quickly. I also backfill the furrows with potting mix and then cover with Agribon like you do. I space the seeds 1 inch a part and its basically perfect every year.
This week I planted out four 50 ft. x 3ft beds (5 rows each) by hand. I planted a new variety of rainbow carrots Johnny's put out this year called Glow Stix sunrise mix, and they are among the largest carrot seeds I have ever seen. Praying on good germination, as always. I liked this video a lot. There is not hardly any farm channels that actually explain how to farm, you seem to be an exception, judging from this video. People need to have this kind of information on hand.

Thank you for your kind words. I’ve been hand-seeding baby chard because I can’t get a seeder to do it properly. You are a boss for hand-seeding those carrot beds. I used to hand-seed and even using pelleted carrot seed I hated doing even one bed. This next season in 2024, I was able to get the Yaya carrot variety in pellets, so I’m seeding all carrots with pelleted seed with the Jang. I now know that I can use the Jang with raw carrot seed, but I’d rather use the pellets because it seems to seed more consistently. More experiments to come! Thank you for your comment 🌱😊👍

lol. I will go sit or stand in the middle of my garden in the snow too. Excellent video, your evidence based trials are really well conducted. I cannot find my favorite carrots in pelleted form and I was not sure a Jang seeder would be a worthwhile investment. You have helped me to decide to get the seeder wheel and give it a go. Can we talk about the deer in your early shots? Is that a pet? I can understand your deer fencing. lol! Cheers from Ontario and good luck for this season.

Hello Ontario 😃 I’m still trying to figure out how best to seed carrots. In 2023 (the season after I made this video) I used the XY-24 roller with raw seed and used a tighter spacing. Maybe it was too tight. I should do a video about that this winter. I’m still leaning towards using pelleted seed if I can get the preferred variety.
The deer have gotten really used to being around me over the years and sometimes they even come up only a few feet away from me. They’re really nice to have around, but I definitely need the deer fencing because otherwise they would gobble everything in a minute 😬

This is exactly the topic covering all of my questions about sowing carrots (pelleted vs raw) with the Jang seeder. Thanks so much for the great video and thanks for sharing.

Thank You for the feedback 😊 I’m still going back & forth about whether I should use raw or pelleted carrot seed. I used all raw carrot seed in the 2023 season and I’m still not 100% happy with how closely it seeded. I will probably do some more experimenting in the 2024 growing season.

    I loved the summery remembrances!
I am having turf seeding calculation challenges because some seed has had a better life and they are physically larger and do survive grow in better, but of course smaller seed give you more per pound.
Over seeding leads to disease and reaching for light and not growing a good structure.
Your research should be very helpful to other Jang folk!

There is always some variable that makes it hard to know for sure what exactly is causing a problem. Maybe I’ll finally have it all figured out when I’m 90 years old 😄

Where can someone find the Jang Seeder chart for all the different wheels? I looked on Johnny’s but did not see anything.

On the Johnny's website, on the page where they have the Jang JP-1 listed for sale, at the very bottom they have a section titled From The Growers Library, and there are a bunch of links with information about the rollers. The ones that I have found most useful are:
"Jang JP Series Seeders | Roller Sizes & Applications | Dynamic Comparison Chart"
      and
"Jang JP Roller Trial | VEGETABLE Variety Cross-Reference Chart (XLS)" (the notes at the end of each entry are helpful)
Here's the link to that page:

Awesome! Thanks, some of my soil has gotten pretty nice over the years, but the newer plots that I haven't worked yet this year are not very fertile and still need a lot of organic material. I'm still learning how to use my Jang too. Hopefully you can learn from some of my mistakes!
