    The reason some of your molds are coming out goofy, or missing pieces is air bubbles.
    1- Rubber Band your molds to hold them together, but in your case since the mold is so pliable don't go too tight or it will affect the actual mold piece.
    2- WIDEN your pour holes a little... they're too tight. Wider hole, less air bubbles trapped and easier to pour.
    3- After you pour lightly tap mold flush on table to help bubbles rise away from your piece. Air is your issue.

    I'm not sure if anyone has already mentioned this, but it is helpful to have a second hole on the top. doesn't need to be big maybe an eighth of an inch in diameter. this would give the air an escape hole. this will help with pouring and prevent bubbles and help the resin get down into the extremities of the mold. pouring should be done a bit slower on small detailed pieces so the resin can get into places like batman's ears without air holes. and as someone mentioned previously measuring the liquid resin reduces waste. If you have cast a finished piece, you can weigh it on a digital scale and that would give you the total weight of resin need. Wonderful Video for beginners, however, I wish I had a resource like this when I began mold making.

      hey there! thanks for the tip! ya another whole would been great for air to escape. and great idea on weighing! nice to see others give great tips! ya this video was really just to share and let others know about it.. not really a tutorial on how to do it step by step.. i would let others figure that out and find out whats best for themselves. thanks for watching and the comment!

    Great video! It does look like a bubble got caught in Batman’s ear. You might try cutting a small vent in the mold to help the bubble escape next time instead of leaving a void in the cast. Nice work though!

    Just speaking from professional experience & hobbyist experience, when you're working with small amounts like this you want to measure by weight instead of by volume to get your measurements. You'd be surprised exactly how far you can stretch even those little bottles of silicone & resin if you just incorporate an accurate scale & do the math. Also maybe next time you do Batman you might have better luck lining up the sculpy block with the points of the ears so they're lowest point in the mold. Always easier to sand an area than to have to do a whole new cast because stupid air bubbles. What you could do to avoid re-casting & wasting materials is mix a little super glue with some cornstarch or baby powder to make your own super glue gel at whatever consistency you need to sculpt out the points. Can fill small bubble or even make a super glue paste that you can use to hand sculpt point like those ears.

    I think it’s best to make a two part mold, so it will be a two section mold. There would not be no sanding or finishing at all, and they will come out perfect every time.

    I love your video, 5th time I've watched it. It inspires me to customize again. Another tip for tight spots. I learned this at Tom savin's special effects coarse many years ago. For batman's ears...take a #1 brush and lightly put corn starch in there. Originally it was baby powder. But as you know baby powder is discontinued. Dab all the way up to to top of the cowl. The corn starch acts like a trail of bread crumbs for the plastic. Not a lot or you'll have air pockets effect again. Good luck

    I normally use a small to medium sized syringe to mix certain paints. You should try a big syringe to inject the liquid plastic into the mold first because alittle pressure/force might help with things like batman's horns.
    Great job on the video man!

    Great video, i did learn some things....i think the batman problems might be fixxed simply by moving the post (pour hole) up the back of the head, (not the top, just farther up the back of the head) it would change the direction of the ears and allow air to flow out of that area better.

  • @sentinelmoonfang
    @sentinelmoonfang 8 років тому +5

    You shouldn't need release agent on the cup. Silicone really only sticks to itself, and since you're tearing up the cup anyway it's fine. The only time you really need the release agent is on the inside of the mold when you're casting in order to keep your mold from potentially being damaged by the demolding process. Also, when there's that many little overhangs, you really need to slush cast things a bit. Definitely do one at a time and rotate/tip the mold as much as possible while it dries. Overhangs and small, deep contours are really rough for one-part molds. Try especially for the batman to tip the mold towards the 'ears' on the mask to make sure the resin fills them.

    -Pigments works well with white resin.
    -Blue mixed silicon tell you "mix it in a third cup"
    -Some bubbles? Open plus wide to poor the resin, or put some channels to free the air.

    Just a thought...
    While I was watching you pour the blue into the pink, I noticed that what ran down the side was wasted.
    Instead of using two separate clear cups each with their own water mark, wouldn't it make more sense to use just one cup - making a mark for one level of water (add the second amount of water to that) & then mark the second water level. Pour the pink into the clear cup to the first level mark, then add the pink to the second level mark. That way, it eliminates the waste left behind from the clear cup you pour out of.

      WylunCustoms you should use your Dermal tool and come up with your head some how to make you into a action figure I don't know how it's done but I drew a self portrait of myself I used to make bronze casting we used some kinda wax to make a mold to dip in silica a few times to make a cast molding then we made the bronze casting then we made a mold to poor wax in it to change it up and make it look different but we had the basic mold so we didn't have to make it all over again out of wax if we wanted to make multiple of what we made.
      I saw this video where this guy was casting stuff out of aluminum cans or scrap aluminum car parts or what ever people put a order in for he was making a living out of it the more he did the better he got at it.
      It's here on UA-cam some where thank you so much for this video it gave some great information on how to make plastic molds, have you tried recycled #2 plastics bottles?

    • @snoopu2601
      @snoopu2601 6 років тому

      WylunCustoms oh the plastic is much harder but it will make a better mold to poor your plastic in it and you can wrap with rubber bands then once it's cooled off you can pull it apart you might have to sand down the two half line like you see in most toys. But that's when your buffer on you Dremal comes in to place

    You could have better fill by making the stalk longer and adding a second stalk to the side to be the air spout so each mold fills completely and you don't have pockets. Finer sections like the bat ears should always be a dependant area (facing down) to minimize filling defects.
    You should let them cure for a little longer, too.

    Why are you not using the cups as a funnel? tear one side of cup dow in straight line , tear out the circular bottom carefully. make it into cone with an end big enough to fit in hole of mold, tape the shape so it holds , then pour resin down the funnel. Dispose of funnel. should be less spillage..

When I pull the head from body, the neck pegs stay attached to head. So when molding, the neck peg becomes solid or wont mold completely. Can the neck peg be removed from head without breaking, also can the neck pegs be molded and cast seperately? Thanks again

    • @frankmorphis1210

      Don't know if you ever got an answer or found a solution. 2 things you can do. 1) blow dry the head. It'll make the plastic softer and the head will pop right off leaving the peg in the body. 2) a technique called boil and pop. Simply just boil the head part for 5 minutes. Be careful... it'll be very hot. Use cleaning gloves (rubber) pull the head off. It should pop right off with ease. Good luck...and to put them back on blow dry the head or boil the head.

      WylunCustoms from my experience. 3D printing takes time to print the model. But you get the flexibility of designing and il immediately get your creation in your hand. then for mass production i go for molding. some veterans n the field told me to go for injection molding. so yeah 3D printing great for design to first proyotype. molding for mass production.

      If u dont have a pressure pot, when u put the cast resin inside the mold try using a piece of wire to pick inside the parts u want to reach before it drys

    Cool tutorial. thanks! Just wondering, if I want to make the hole bigger for these heads or the original heads to fit other bodies would I use a dremel?

    What if I want to make a mold of a head that’s already been painted with acrylics. It has been sealed but I’m nervous the the mold can chip off the paint.

      FUEGO City cross your fingers and roll. I'm pretty sure the release is water soluble. So should be fine, but if you were worried still you could seal it first with mr super clear or a mate varnish to lock in the paint up.

    Can you use a syringe to pour the clear cast material into the mold? Wouldn’t that be better? Great video and great modeling!

      Im sure it would have! i honestly made this video early on after doing 1-2 as tests so there is always room to improve on technique. thanks for watching and i hope it was helpful! try it yourself and make better ones than me! =D

    Great video! Really helpfull and to the point. I have one question though: You only use the 2 realesing agents when prepping before the mold is made. I was wondering if you need to spray the finished mold before doing any casting or on the finished casts? Thanks for the great advices! cheers.

      :-) Also how durable is the liquid plastic? Would it hold up as joints and pegs and such?

    • @WylunCustoms
      @WylunCustoms  7 років тому

      hm. that never occured to me, but i clearly didnt have any problems on most of them.. the biggest problem i had was just making sure the compound got into every small corner of the mold lol.

    • @WylunCustoms
      @WylunCustoms  7 років тому

      oh it is VERY VERY DURABLE, stronger i would say compared to the normal figure plastics. once you take it out, its still alittle.. "flexible" but it keeps its mold. after about 30 mins it turns ROCK hard.

    Hey man I love your video it's helped me so much, but I've tried casting a baseball bat from The Walking Dead action figure series and it completely failed, I'm wondering if you could post a video of doing different accessories
    I would appreciate it more than you could imagine!

    Dude great tutorial. I don't know why people are bitching about sniffling and gum as I didn't even notice the sounds until AFTER they pointed it out. Some people are just ungrateful about free information.
    I'm wondering if you've copied a whole Marvel Legends figure yet? I'd get one of the smooth bodied ones like Vance Astro or Cosmic Spiderman and mold and cast all the parts to start making whole custom figures. All those heads you made are probably at least half a figure's worth of liquid plastic. :{J

    How do you stop the paint on your custom figures scratching off??

    • @WylunCustoms
      @WylunCustoms  7 років тому

      proper pre work goes a long way. any surface you are painting on, make sure you wash and scrub away any manufacture oils or chemicals from the figure. if you need to sand down areas also, it will help. (and do a proper wash w/ dish washer soup and a brush no matter what). have a clean surface goes a long way. when you paint also, do very light coats at a time, letting time for the paint to cure properly (as you put on the next layer). when u paint light coats and let them dry, they dry better and cure properly. with all this, your paint should be fine after 1-2 full days of curing. Paint is going to scratch or come off no matter what. Not even figures you get from hasbro or mattel have paint jobs that are invincible to eventual ware and tear or paint rub/ scratches/ nicks and bangs. you can also coat ur paint job w/ a clear coat, which will go along way. whatever paint you use does have its own clear coat spray, (matte or gloss).
