Molding and Casting Tutorial - Custom Head Sculpts
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- This tutorial details my process when it comes to duplicating an action figure head or a custom head that I've sculpted myself. This is helpful when making different versions of a character or interchangeable heads for one character. I am using a range of Smooth-on products including silicone rubber for the molds and liquid plastic for the eventual casts. Links will be provided below.

Thank you so much for the video. The use of legos for molding never came to my mind. That's a very smart strategy!
Thanks! It helped me a lot on the pigment section. I currently use a white smooth on resin and thinking of pigmenting it with black.
Ok thanks for the quick response, and keep up the great work. I enjoyed the tutorial a lot and look forward to getting started.
Just followed you on Instagram and thought it would be too good to be true for you to be willing to share your methods on UA-cam, but here you are. My god what a talent, and thanks so much for teaching us.
Very helpful thank you.
Quick question, does it matter to have a pigment? Could I just spray paint it as well?
GREAT VIDEO! but i have a question! is the pigment starter kit you have in the descriptions one the correct one for the liquid plastic? i only ask because in the link it says its pigment for silicone (which i thought is used to make the mold)... unless they are basically the same substance (except one is more rubbery) if you can clear this up i appreciate it. i bought the starter kit and want to get into it! thanks!
You're right, I've updated the link with the correct version. I bought mine on ebay and it was unlabeled. If you go to Smooth-on's website and look under pigments you'll see the correct ones that work for liquid plastic and then if you want to shop around, you have the correct info. Hope that helps and good luck.
I'm confused. I have Alumilite Amazing Rubber to make the molds. I bought Smooth-on Smooth-Cast 325 to make the casts. Why are you using a color-able resin to make your molds? The resin is supposed to be hard so you can make figure parts with it, while the mold is made from rubber so its flexible
Edit: I see what happened. Had to go back. That was OOMOO that you used first
Also, do you add babypowder or anything to the mold before pouring in the plastic?
would you do the same thing with like a translucent fire or water effect?
excuse me...what spray did you use when you spray the molding spray?thank you for attention
Hi Great vid. Thanks ? What color from smooth on do you use to get caucasian flesh tone in resin casts. ? I only see the primary colors tints in their website Thanks in advance
Which Brand that use for this mold and The Replica, Sorry for my English...
I noticed for one of your square molds, you cut it straight down instead of zigzag. Why is that?
awesome vid!!!....whats the name of the first song?? its dope
5h06un 5 years and no response? It’s called neon black by bourgeoisie
You should do a Winter Soldier Action Figure ^.^
Do you sell your cast heads?
All I could ever see is black and white. Never could see c o l o r
Can you also mold Mego style action figure boots? I have Falcon and one of the plastic boots cracked and I was wondering if I could make a mold of that boot?
Wow! Great tutorial, Thanks for doing it!
Damn, you make me want to make my own action figures. Good job man!!!
Thank you for this tutorial. I had some questions 1. Have you used Legos for bigger molds?
2. Is the mold sealer the best way to stop the silicone from coming out of the Legos or is there a better way?
3. Have you used a pressure pot to get bubbles out or would you recommend a vacuum chamber?
And lastly have you tried the petroleum jelly as a way to seal the Legos cause I am not sure if I want to try it for a bigger molds. Thank you
1. How do i get rid of bubbles without buying vacuum stuff? for silicone mold mix and resin mix?
2. Once i have the mold made and im about to pour resin in, is it a good idea to spray mold release spray on the inside of the mold?
3. If i had other pigment powder for other things, or stuff like acrylic paint, would those work to add color to the resin?
4. wat would happen if when you were pouring silicone mold straight onto piece u were tryin to mold?
5. is it a bad idea to use other products resin with this brand silicone mold and vice versa?
This is awesome! Now to make an army of heads with this new information! Love your stuff! Exclamation point!
This is awesome. Love the 69ing skeletons 😂
Where is the step that you took out the other ones in the 3 square container??? That's the one I care to see. How did you remove it from the plastic container? How were they built that you can remove it?
Great tutorial for beginners.Thanks !
Good ideas for a beginers, like kids
That is really cool! I just made my first Oomoo mold this weekend. I haven't yet tried any of their resins yet though. I did look at them on the website though. I definitely prefer clear resin so likely will try one of those.
I used the Lego box idea for my mold as well. It was fun. Thankfully my son let me borrow some of his Lego pieces. :) The vent idea is cool. I may have to try that sometimes. So far I am molding spheres so not sure how I could get a vent to work in that. It isn't a two part mold either. I would be afraid of ruining the sphere shape.

Hi, is the mold reusable?
Does the spray buy separately?
man i just discovered your channel and now im a big fan of your work!
The song is tight.
Excellent video.
Don't use legos!
If you use 3 part moulds, could you make a tutorial on them?
👍
Do you sell the Terminator's heads I saw in this video? Because my son has a Neca Terminator endoskeleton but my dog chewed off the head of the figure and my son is frustrated about it.
Very cool. That is a ton of work.
What if I going to recast heads with hair? For example wolverine logan? Where do i put the clay?
Ok. So I bought the starter kit and it came with white liquid plastic... Looks like I'll be shopping for their pigments now....
Hey any chance you have tried to mold and cast arms and hands like the LCBH savage dragon?
hello, very nice video, im actually having some problems with bubbles on that resin, my question is if when you cast it you have a lot of microbubbles in the piece, or if you don´t and what do you recommend me, to avoid all the microbubbles or almost all of them, another thing that i wanna ask you is: Do you shake parts a and b just before using it? is it really necesary? thank´s for the video, excellent job
What kinda action figures do you use for the base? since most of them you buy are very detailed and got molded hair on them. Do you u grind it away, what is the trick there? great vidz! keep em coming ;D
Do you have any tutorials on using hydrospan or hydroshrink?
Really helpful vid by the way
I'm not really sure what your talking about when your mixing all the things but this vid is really awesome so thanks :)
@XmenMagnetoAcolytes I'm actually just starting out myself in learning how to make action figure head sculpt molds and such, so I would have to totally defer to someone who has way more experience than myself for now like Greg Sarabia, his work is top notch.
I've been sort of considering doing this sort of thing, but the thing is that I collect anime figures. I was sort of interested in customizing a Cu-poche product. I'm actually unsure if that's even possible.
Great tutorial I have a question on casting say if I want to cast a 1/6 (12 inch) head sculpt but I want it shrink that head sculpt to 1/12 scale (6 inches) what materials would I need to do that? Will it be the same method as seen in your video or will it be different? I ask since haven't seen anyone make a proper video tutorial on shrinking a 1/6 head and making it to a 6 inch head sculpt since I would like to learn how to do that for figures
What were those skeletons doing at 2:29
Can you still dye the 300 resin? The starter kit comes with that instead of the 325
awesome video tutorial greg, do you think its possible that i could purchase one of those casteed joker heads?
how does it stick to the bottom and not float up?
I can use blutack instead of sculpey ?
Hello can you please tell me which attachment is the best to use when using the Dremel to modify the ball joint hole on a 6 inch figure head sculpt so that it can fit on the body of the figure? Thanks
I use the regular drill bit and just widen the socket

greg love your work I wanted to know If you could do a custom head for a 6in figure for me by chance?
I really cant find a silicone mix here in our country, so ill ask for your advice if I could use a Silicone Glass sealer? The one we use for binding Glass in windows or something like that...Can I use that for alternative Silicone for a mold? thanks in advance..pls do reply thanks
Alternatively, check out the Kind of Random's video on proto putty. You can use that to make silicone molds.
can you do this with sculpted heads made out of super sculpy
How does the resin compare to the plastic of the figures?
Awesome work! Are those LMS Gabriel helmets?
Awesome!
You made look easy... Thanks for this tutorial Spawnsauce!
Great tutorial...You have nice hands. o.o
How do u get the molds perfectly clear I did mine and I either got them with bubbles in them or they came out too soft. What do you suggest?
baby powder helps the resin adhere to the mold if the mold itself has no bubbles in it. but, it can take a few casts to get the kinks out
Does the resin heat up when curing
Fantastic vid.
You're very talented! You should make Mortal Kombat action figures... I'm sure you could do a great job! I would love to see a video of that
thank u very helpful
great tutorial!
Anyone know how good the quality of this plastic is?
Zach DeWitt nothing that is shown in this video is plastic. If you are referring to the final product, then you mean resin, and it is quite hard (harder than a normal factory made action figure head would be)once it is properly allowed to dry. If you want to make it more durable then you should be using a casting pot to get all the air bubbles out and make the resin more durable and compact.
Thanks a lot man :) been waiting for I don't know how long to get an answer, really appreciate it
i was just looking into start molding myself. this will help thanks!
I hope someone gets to read this before this comment get removed. Do not
use Smooth-On silicone rubber if unless you are willing to accept that
it will shrink and change its shape in a few months and it will continue
to shrink substantially over the course of a few years. I have made
many molds with both of their silicones. The chart Smooth-On gives you
for how much it will shrink is false. It shinks about 1/4" per every
24". I had to constantly cut the mother mold down to adjust for this
continuous shrinkage. I have to throw the mold out this morning as it is
now too deformed to be able to use. This rubber also tears quite easily
and it will rip after a short while of demolding.
What should we use then? Thanks
Shore Hardness is an important factor when considering which mold rubber you should choose for your mold. It's not necessarily the Smooth ON brand that you're having trouble with, it's that you don;'t seem to know what shore hardness is right for your work. Smooth On makes a TON of great products and it would probably help if you explored all of their shore hardnesses before you tell someone not to use their products.
So damn cool. I tried it and it worked perfectly. Then I quickly learned I can't paint eyes for shit
Thank you for sharing, very informative. Love your creativity and originality in all your work!
can you make me a 1/6th satyr head sculpt?
*SICK*
This video make me so hony.
