Being an engineer, I consider myself a professional problem solver. This problem though was stumping me. I'd have never thought of this solution. It worked like a charm. The door now opens as expected. Thanks!
Being a professional Lego builder, I consider myself a professional builder, this problem stumped me though, the pieces wouldn’t click together, thank you for the wisdom, my door opens amazing now.
I've been trying to fix this on mine for about six months with no joy. I replaced the springs on the side and greased and adjusted everything. I was about to buy a new opener motor when I found this video. I have scoured the internet looking for solutions and this is the only one that was able to fix my issue. Thank you SO much! I only wish I had found it sooner.
I was completely overthinking this problem... Never even occurred to me that this was a solution. Thank you so much
I replaced my garage door open 6 months ago and the door jumps when first opened or when not opened for about 1 hour, I followed your video hope it works well. thank you.
You solved the problem that has plagued my garage door for nearly a year. Like you, I adjusted everything but nothing worked. Thank you sir. 👍👍
You are a genius. I have been lubricating my garage door for years. Nothing worked. Never thought to check weather stripping. One side was black and as sticky as glue. That was the problem. Thank you. You saved me a garage door service call.
Dude, thanks a lot. My garage door has been bugging me for weeks. Outstanding!
Simple and cheap solution to what seemed to be a serious problem. Thanks for making this video.
Just did it to two of my garage doors and now they open smooth as butter!!!
This did the trick. You saved me a few hundred dollars by NOT hiring a garage door company to fix what I knew had to be a simple fix. You are cool!
I can't believe it, it worked like a charm. Four months of madness and this was the answer. Thanks
Incredible! This definitely works. I also sprayed the spring with lithium grease. Donating $25 to Wounded Warriors for the idea!!
Suggested solution worked perfectly!!! This 2 min video has to be the best on UA-cam when it comes to saving people affected by this issue a lot of nerves, time and money. And of course, garage door "professionals" keep silence about it....Thank you very, very much for posting this video!
One more thing - use of Vaseline (aka 100% pure petrolium jelly) is a super smart recommendation. This thing is a sort of universal lubricant, safe for use on anything because it is chemically neutral and it also has a very decent operating temperature range. It is also very inexpensive. While application of some other chemically neutral lubricant will likely help to address the "jerky" garage door issue (because of weather strips), vaseline is known to be 100% safe when being used with just about any material. Vaseline can also be used for certain residue cleaning, so I did not even clean anything from weather strips, just applied vaseline, and as Technical Mechanical mentioned, it worked right away. Took less than a couple of minutes for each of the side weather strips, and less than $1 worth of vaseline. Super effective!
Thanks for the kind words! I went through a lot of frustration with this issue before finally figuring it out. It was so bad that the attachment bracket ripped off of the mounting points and I had to buy a reinforcement bracket to fix. I even paid a garage company $100 and they still didn't fix the problem. Hoping this video saves people some grief and $.
It Works! The garage door got on my nerves this week and I found this fix. I wiped down both the weather seals and garage door contact points. Then, I applied the vasoline and no more jerky door. It's been smooth as silk opening the garage door. Thanks a bunch.
Wow I really want to thank you. My door had been jerking when opening for about 6 months. My son is a helicopter mechanic, and he has tried trouble shooting the problem with no success. He finally found your video and bam, problem solved.
You're welcome! Glad it worked for you guys also.
Like all the other comments, THANK YOU ! This is exactly what was occurring on my door and I dealt with it for years. The jerking on my door was much worse. This solved it beautifully.
An exasperating factor: I had sprayed all around the opening with insecticide and that made the entire weather-stripping seal super tacky. Bottom line, issue is now gone - THANKS for such a great video. Liked/Subscribed.
I had this issue and couldn't figure out how to solve it. When I would open the door, the door opener track would start to bow. This video was spot on and my garage door doesn't stick anymore and works like a charm. A quick, easy adn inexpensive fix to what I thought was a big problem.
Can't believe didn't notice this before! I have seen how dry and stiff are those weather strips but never associated with the garage door noise issue. Thank you!! This was great help!!
Best regards
Wow, exactly what I needed. The problem has been driving me crazy. Thanks for taking the time to make this helpful video!
My door was constantly sticking and loudly jerking open. I thought this had something to do with the spring or the track. Never considered the weather strip was sticky. This WAS the problem. I put some lubricant on the outside weather striping and problem solved. THANK YOU for sharing this tip!
Wow man. Totally worked. So I installed these same seals on the inside. They were already on the outside, but with wind, mine flexes a lot and allows a lot of cold air in as well as even snow in the bottom corners. So I installed another set of them on the inside of the garage. All looked good as far as clearance but was sticking/jumping when opening. I re-adjusted these seals and set them back a few times with no luck. As soon as I put in the petroleum jelly, BAM, now “smooth as butter”! Thanks man!
Jeez, this has been annoying the crap out of me for a year. I was soooo close. I cleaned the bottom door gasket because it was grimy and thought that was holding it up, but that did nothing. I never would have thought those thin strips along the sides could have such grip, but mine was really tacky. Once I wiped them down with WD-40, Voila'! You ROCK!
Wow! Thank you! I had my garage door guy coming out for a second time. I put Chapstick on the weather stripping and no more LOUD BANG when it starts to open! Really appreciate your video!
Soooo glad I stumbled across this video. I've had this problem for about a year. I was close to calling a garage technician. I used a jar of Dollar Tree Vaseline and voila! Like the MSN said, it's smooth like butter!
My door was making a violent initial opening noise after installing a new garage door opener. I cleaned the weather stipping (18 years of sticky buildup) and door area contacting the weather stripping with Goop. I lubed the stripping and door contact points and it worked like a charm. Thanks.
What did you use to clean the weather seal?
Watched video last evening, checked weather stripping and sure enough…it was completely stuck! Put Vaseline just like you said and presto now no awful buckling upon opening!! Thank you!!🙏🏼💪🏼👍🏼
i went with magic lube instead of vaso and it works like new, thnx brother!
I have had this problem for a few years now. I just saw this tonight and put some Vaseline on it. Hope it works! Thank you so much !
I watched a lot of videos and couldn't solve this issue. You are the only one that suggested lubing the weather stripping. I was concerned that Vaseline might cause the rubber to deteriorate so I used a silicone lube that is meant for rubber plumbing gaskets. This is more expensive that Vaseline but worth it, if it saves the weather stripping. It worked! Thanks for the video that FINALLY solved my problem!
Awesome video! I used silicone lube and it’s working like a charm. I thought this was a way bigger problem, but thanks to your video I fixed it in less than 30 seconds.
Thought for sure it was too much slack in the chain. Nope, just sticky weather stripping. Took 1-minute with the vasoline and now it opens perfectly smooth. I did however use a paper towel to put on the vasoline so that my hands didn't get all greasy and black. Awesome video. Thanks!
Unreal. I was about to call someone, glad I googled it and found your video. Thank you, this was my problem, too!
You sir, are a genius!!! This has been bothering me for a long time. Finally it’s quiet. Ended up using super lube since it’s good on plastic. Thank you!
Thx for the tip! My garage would sound like it was sticking as soon as I hit the button to open. Put 2&2 together, it just got hot in Texas AND my house was just painted. As soon as I watched your video it clicked. Wiped down the weather striping on the sides with lithium grease and it purrs like a kitten. Thx a lot!
It worked, thank you. The violate jerky sounded like it will rip something apart soon or later. thank you.
Thank you, my door would stick so much and i could not figure out why. This worked like a charm, I was about to start dismantling the tracks to find the problem. Thank you for saving me the time and the headache.
I was skeptical this would work - figured I'd just get a greasy door. But it worked like a charm. I initially tried silicon grease but it didn't work. Vaseline did! I put it on when it was below freezing and wasn't sure, but it still worked great. Thanks!
Perfect brother! Thanks for a two minute video that solved my problem!
Outstanding video! I had the same problem. Tried to lube everything, no luck. My weather stripping looks just like yours. I took some goop off and removed all that stuff, sprayed it with some dry lube and its working great. If it sticks again I'll break out the Vaseline. Thanks again. Subbed.
Just tried your solution after checking everything. I pushed on the outside of the door first and it appeared it was sticking a bit. I used a good silicone spray and everything is working much better now. Thank you!
Thank you very much for this! It did not occur to me that the seals could be causing the door to bind and stick in place. I found a short section on one side that had a few dark strips of sticky material. I cleaned with an adhesive remover and the door does not jerk when opening now. Thank you again!
Awesome!! I took thought it had to with possibly several items you mentioned. I used spray silicon. Instant success!! This is so great to have a quiet smooth opening garage door. A thousand thumbs up!!
Awesome. It worked for me also. I believe if you clean the dirt and grime off of the weatherstripping it will have the same affect but I'll have to try that later.
Same problem here. THis guy fixed it!!! Like him, my issue was worse in the morning (door sat shut overnight, vinyl getting a good stick!!) so I went out the front door, ran my finger along the vinyl/door and could absolutely feel it was adhereing. Cleaned vinyl with acetone, applied thin layer of white lithium grease, problem solved.
Thanks so much for this. Shaking and noise had gotten terrible over last nine months. Gone thanks to you. I had a garage door repairman at my house twice, including once first thing in the morning after the long overnight closure. I had already lubed everything, and he check the balance, springs, rollers, hinges, motor, chain, etc and pronounced the system in good shape. Never mentioned the possibility of sticky seals. Sure enough, when I applied the vaseline the problem vanished. Not sure if I now have a door addicted to vaseline but even if I have to do it every couple months it's worth it not to have drama when I open the door in the morning.
Brother thanks! I have this problem from last 2 years. I tried everything but unfortunately nothing worked. I fixed it today.
Omg you're a genius! I have been battling this intermittent issue for three years...YESSSSS!! Thank you!!!!
Thank you so much. It was a great help to me. I did everything and spent so much money on it. Nothing worked exactly your solution. 🙏🙏
You're welcome. I'm happy it helped you!
Genius! I was obsessing over the spring and rails and it was the rubber trim! Thanks!
Wow thank you so much, this totally fixed my EXTREMELY loud and jerky garage door. Was planning on paying a repairman but this worked like a charm!
Glad it worked out for you!
Brilliant. A few minutes with a tube of silicon and the clunk on start-up is gone! Thank you for the tip. P.S. The problem seemed to start when I had the whole house and garage doors painted. When the painter sprayed the garage doors, paint got between the door and vinyl stripping which exacerbated the problem. The clunk only occurred on the single door with one spring. The double wide door with the double spring had enough pull power to bypass the issue…but this garage door got a load of silicon as well! :)
Did the trick! The weather stripping (seal) gets a dirt gunk build up as well as the door where the weather stripping covers the edges of door. It makes film almost like glue. I chose to clean it with some "orange" type and also some "carb" type cleaner wiping it all down after getting the bulk of the grime off. It was tar like! Then back over the seal with Vaseline. Lubed the rollers / axles well with "garage door lube" and lithium dry. Up and down several times to disperse the lube and set in the thin layer of Vaseline on the seal. Works very well.
I have just followed this video & my garage door has never run so smoothly & silently. Thank you for your video
No problem! Glad it worked for you.
Great tip! Sprayed a little WD-40 on the garage seal on both sides and top and that fixed the Jerky opening.
Fixed by garage door! Thanks for saving me time and money !
Amazing. I will try this. Judging by the reviews I’m optimistic
At least initially it works! I'd also tried everything else, at least a dozen times but never thought of this being the culprit! Thanks for the tip, I hope it works longer term.
I even paid the overhead door company to adjust the spring and lube the rollers and still had the issue. I applied a relatively liberal amount of vaseline about a year ago and still no issue since!
@@TechnicalMechanical I forgot to note that since I didn't have any vaseline handy I used silicon spray and rubbed it in as much as I could.
Day 3, 5th try and still no jerking after using silicon spray. Thanks for the tip, who'd a thunk it!
Glad it's also working for you!
Thanks! I will try this. I also have larger rubber weather strip/bumper at the bottom that looks pretty dirty. I was planning on cleaning that as well, so maybe the combination will fix it.
Thank you! I had been trying to figure it why it was making the loud bang when opening. I lubricated the moving parts and a repair man had replaced a broken torsion spring earlier this year which didn't help with the noise. I wish I'd found this video before ordering new higher quality rollers because greasing the seal fixed the problem. I had been thinking about replacing the weather seal on the sides because it is getting cracked on one side.
Thank you!!! Saved me so much time. I found some black tarry stuff on the weather stripping which must have been causing it, so I cleaned that off first.
You're welcome. Glad it worked out for you!
Thanks so much! It fixed the issue that we had been dealing with for quite a while. Well done!
Just wanna say thank you this worked perfectly for me. I really appreciate it.
Omg. this was the problem the whole time?! I was about to call a repair man 🤦🏽♂️
I have been fighting this all summer. In the morning my door would lurch so hard it would error out my opener. I would just close and open again and it was fine. Sure enough after watching video, I checked my seals and they are incredibly sticky. Put vaseline on and now smooth opening.
Glad it worked out for you!
I did this but I cleaned the gunk off first. Thanks for posting!
Vaseline did the trick! Thanks for posting this.
Thank you! You saved me a service call it works like a charm now.
Thanks for taking the time to help a fella out. Bingo fix for me.
Worked perfectly and saved me a service call and money !
SOB, had the EXACT same issue, and this trick WORKED. Thanks!
Fixed my issue thanks to this video
Wow, thank you so much. I had just paid to have a new hurricane garage door put on and this was driving me nuts.
Borderline Genius! Thank you so much for this solution. Worked like a charm
No problem. Glad it helped!
Excellent diagnostics
It worked, applied a little Vaseline and problem fixed. Thank you!
OMG. I've been trying to fix this for years! For now, I sprayed the weather strip on either side with WD40, and it's fixed. I may need Vaseline down the road.
Wow, I’m shocked!! You rock, Sir. Thank you!
Wow. You may have solved my problem.
Will try that as soon as I come home.
Thanks for sharing.
Indeed, this did the trick. Thanks for sharing.
Same issue here when super cold outside. Thank you for the tip. Used silicone grease.
Couldn't believe this was our problem, but it worked!
wish I"d seen this earlier. I"ve trying to fix my door for months. tip from this video did the trick.
Thanks so much, tried on my garage door and it worked!!!
It worked for me too and now door is moving like a knife on butter
Thanks 🙏
Thank you! Never thought of this.
How lucky am I? This is the first video I watched and it is the problem! Wow
Super helpful tip! I was going to create a project to replace garage door and opener. Great save!
This makes SOOOO much sense! Thank you!
I tried everything and diagnosed as the mech. eng. I am but who would have known! Thank you!
Brilliant. I'm embarrassed I couldn't figure this out.
You had the exact symptoms (also worse when higher temps)--so I am getting some vaseline. thanks Bro!
I put talcum powder on the floor where the rubber sticks to the floor.
I Did That & It IS GREAT NOW THANK YOU SIR
Worked for me too. Thanks a million !
Worked perfectly! Thank you taking the time to post this.
This worked perfectly, thank you
Amazing video worked like a charm!!
DUDE that is genius 👍👍👍thanks man
No problem. Glad it helped!
OK, it's the next day around noon and knowing folks really do like to know if solutions like this one works longer term, there was no jerking when I opened the garage door. I'm thinking this is working but I'll keep you posted over the next day or so just to be sure.
Thank you so much, this video saved me a lot of time and trouble!!!
Worked for me. Cleaned gunk, then Vaseline.
