A gambit SEPTA might exploit to increase rider capacity:
Wide-Gangway cars similar to those NYCTA is now taking delivery of, or London Underground 'S' Stock.
Equipping said vehicles with a highly robust door programming interface, whilst running 8-car trains, such that only cars 2 thru 7 need platform.
I'm not sure if any MFL stations can platform 8 cars at present, but my idea would permit SEPTA to run 'crowd swallowers' not previously possible.
Yes, this would necessitate replacing the entire Adtranz fleet, which cars I never cared for.

You'd need to modify the infrastructure for this.
Also, why bother using longer trains if the additional cars will see little use at stations?
