    Super Job Al ! I like the lip edge you nailed on the inside of the door and then trimmed the outside of it to prevent the cool air to escape. So now for the air exchange. I've seen systems with PVC pipes work wonders. Anxious to see how you're going to do your air system... You keep making it and I'll keep watching it. Have a good day :)

    Because of the thickness of the door, one could slightly bevel the mating edge of the door and the frame opening to prevent that swing gap problem. Seeing you run into that is helping me avoid that on a similar door I plan to build. My remaining challenge is that standard doorknobs and latches aren't designed for such a thick door. I may have to have a notch where the door is thinner to accommodate, or find hardware intended for thick doors.

    Hey Al next time maybe you could angle the knob side door frame to have the door wedge together just a thought. Its all gonna shrink and twist anyway so you will be back, and I have found a wire rope from bottom knob side to the top hinge side with a turnbuckle can pick up the door from knob side bottom rubbing. Good cool room may want more cfl bulbs or led less heat.

    Great project I like the room that you made for your root cellar talking about holes that you have to manage if you screw hole and you no longer use it but it’s still affecting your hinge a good way to actually recover from that is actually use golf tee pound it into the hole cut it off and then re screw your hole with no problem of your hole or hinge tilting for the door placement

    Loved watching your problem solving process, which is always enjoyable and your level of patience is always admirable. I wondered whether you might get trapped along the way, which was entertaining. Walk in coolers / freezers also employ that sort of overlap method for the heavy doors, I think. take a look at a walk in fridge and you will see the door is made with a 45 at the edges. This makes the seal and prevents the gaps. What you have done works, that's all that matters. Good job. Although you should have asked me first. LOL

    When we built our Mt home I had an 8' X 8' drive in door and a 4' X 8' walk in door in the basement. I used the 4' for everything that I could.
    I only used the 8' for the tractor or trailer load of wood. My wood stove was also in the basement so I wanted the doors to be insulated.
    They were built out of 2x4s like yours. Outside was 3/4" t/g cedar insulated and luan plywood inside. I also had trouble on the 4' door like
    u did. I built the closing side on maybe a 4-5 degree angle and make a rubber seal. The 8' door was 2-4' doors that swung out, cedar outside,
    luan inside. When I made these doors I put a matching 5 degree angle so u closed one door and then the other door closed with no gap. The outside cedar fit so close that u had to be close to the door to see where the door split. I made my own hinges and inside latches, when we left to come home the doors were locked from the inside. Also the doors were very heavy, so I put cables from the top hinges down to the far corner

    Boy that brought back memories only I didn't have a phone to call for help - I pulled the hinge pins & pushed the door down! Man glitter?!? - it's not just for men! Give me sawdust over glitter any day!! I was wondering why you made such a thick door for a slider - I thought I heard you say you were building one. I was beginning to think you created some sort of slider that air locked in place! There is a lot of top gap with sliders & then you wouldn't have been able to wake Gina up to hip check you out! Yeah Gina!! Classic!!

    Great job Al, it's looking like a real cold storage unit now! You could try adding some weather stripping in between the door & the gap on the door frame if the gap is too big for just 1 piece you could add it to both the door & frame so they come together at the same spot when closed! Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!!!🌲🌲🌲

    Al, you are a very handy guy. You think ahead, always looking at the future. You make projects look easy, but I know the projects are not that easy to accomplish. Al, you have sure taught me a lot of tricks with construction. In The Philippines we get a carpenter for about $5 to $6 a day, (not an hour, but a day). I watch the carpenters there like a hawk. Then in Texas I can do my own work. Your hints really are worth watching the whole video. I am looking forward to the 20,000 subscriber. By the way, I thought you would open the door out of, and not into the cellar. That way you would have had more space inside the cellar. How did you determine which way to have the. Door open and close? God bless America.

    Looking good! I am definitely not a carpenter so I'm wondering if there is a benefit to having the door open to the inside? I would have put it opening to the outside so I'm trying to learn your thought process or reasoning? does it matter? or just a personal preference thing?

    • @LumnahAcres
      @LumnahAcres  7 років тому +1

    • @marbarnes7063

      My thoughts were that the door will take up room opening in and limit the amount of space inside. To go to that much work, I would want as much room inside as possible. But, it's a matter of preference, I guess. Good job!

    since you like to experiment....Try 2 pipes say 3 inch or so. Install 1 as high as you can in the window, and the other as low in the cave as you can. Terminate both pipes outside at same level but away from each other. (Screens and such as needed, not sure what is on the other side of window) If geothermal transfer is not enough you could then add an exhaust fan to move cold air in and hot air out.Remember hot air rises cool air falls!

    • @lastniceguy1

      On logs I think it is one inch a year. Drying slow seems to be the trick. The ends are most important to slow down.

    • @amandaw30
      @amandaw30 7 років тому

      We’ve tried a few different ways. We’ve milled fresh cut wood and dried it for about 2 years with spacers between each board (we were expecting this to be our best bet) and that warped pretty bad once we brought it in (we made shelves). That was hemlock and pine. We tried leaving the log with painted ends and air drying for a few months after milking and that didn’t work. That was a thick 2-3 inch slab of black walnut that we used for a butcher table. We have other various wood out there now that’s been drying for years but he’s hesitant to use it. We’ve used fresh milled wood for siding on our cow run ins, chicken coop, smoker and coolbot cooler. That’s all been great...but all outdoors. He’s talked about building a solar kiln to see if that would help, but we don’t have the funds to devote just yet.

  • @FarmFreshIB

    Typically the leading edge of a door has a 2 to 3 degree bevel in order to swing properly. That bevel (carried out across the door thickness) is what has created your gap. Originally you were thinking about doing a sliding door. What changed your mind? It would probably have been easier to create an overlapping sliding door on the front combined with a swinging interior door, leaving a bit of an air chamber between them. Both could have less bulk and then you would still end up with a good seal as well as good insulation qualities. If you want to seal your current gap the work around is to make the edge of the door frame also have a bevel to match the door with the front exterior edge thick and the interior edge thin. That way when they meet up it will be similar to a lap joint made when joining flat stock end to end. Did that make any sense? At any rate ... you overcame the problem in the end and it looks great!

    • @jimh712
      @jimh712 6 років тому +1

      As Thunder pointed out the latch side of the door should have had a few degree bevel .. And if you want a tighter fit cut the door frame at the same bevel..and a channel around the outer side of the door a door seal could be added with room to be compressed..
      and in the interest of sealing the doors r-value
      The top of the door top and top of the frame could be cut with the same degrees of bevel..

    In a refrigerator the 15 (?) watt light bulb staying on is enough to over ride the refrigerators cooling effect..
    That being said i like to put tattle-tales to remind me and my customers.. The light is still on...
    Easiest way is to wire another light to the inside light.. And install it on the outside of the door...
    If it's on...you forgot..which is easy to do..we all make mistakes..
    only liers don't make mistakes..
