Thank you for sharing your video homestead 👨👩👧👸👕👓🐩🐈🐔🐓🐤🐖🌱🏡🎥👍👍👍
This is the music I love Al. It makes me think of all the years I watched your earlier videos
Such a team work......✅🇨🇦
One year ago...we were struggling with our new house projects before winter and you did one fine job of insulating your outdoor kitchen! We said the same thing, "Boy, its going to be nice, to have these jobs finished!" I may not be able to spend much time watching U-Tube for while. We are out straight with the farms. You, Gina and Olivia are welcome to stop by for a visit. We are not open to the public, but may show up on-line via Guy and James Hersey Farms-East Andover, NH. My husband is James Jr.. His brother, Jerry, owns the main farm. There are two farms, plus our house at the base. Spring would be fun for Olivia with new born calves. Take care and Happy Thanksgiving, Diane ( Hall) Hersey.
It's not an outdoor kitchen anymore. You got yourself a genuine cookhouse! Always wanted one, myself.
Yes!!!
i thank you a lot for all the good content you share with us,i saved everyone of your videos so i can use them as reference when starting my of the grid lifestyle
been a little busy, just now catching up to the videos. I wanted to thank you again for building an outdoor kitchen, because now my beauty wants one. Lol. Life is good. What better way to work on the homestead. Doing a great job Al.
You will love the outdoor kitchen!
great job
I made turkey barley soup yesterday, yummmmm!!! Yes, I'd still call it an outdoor kitchen! We're still working on insulating our shed home, and I hate it too----I'll be itchy for days after doing some insulation today! Looking good, guys!! ~~Leslie
Turkey Barley soup sounds delicious! We are having left over soup tonight. Todays high was 25 and windy! Good night for soup
Brrrr, it's in the 50's here in Ohio! I'm hoping it will start snowing before Sunday, we're going hunting for a Christmas tree and it's so much nicer with snow on the ground!
Yes snow helps set the mood for that
Olivia might become the Lumnah videographer!
Cool
Love your videos! When we insulated our 1960's house ten years ago, I wanted to be as nontoxic as I could and found blue jean insulation. It is fantastic, no itch, nothing toxic in your lungs, great R value, it still looks great and my contractor doesn't mind going up in our attic. Our Lowe's has it yours might too.
Good to know thanks
Good job.
You do nice work Al. It'll get so warm in there you'll be down to your skivvies in no time lol.
I hope so! :) Thanks
u are the first thing i see in the morning i enjoy ur videos so much
You are one hardworking man !
You two work well together, it's nice to see.
Love hearing the rain
It is an open to the outdoors kitchen when you open the doors and window. At least it is an out of the house kitchen. Better than butchering on the dining table, which was what happened as I was growing up.
You need to butcher where you can! :)
Yes! It is still an outdoor kitchen if insulated! Our tiny house was sooooo hot in the summer and it was freezing in the spring when it was just a shell and a summer kitchen needs comfort just as much as any other building! It looks great by the way!
Thanks, I bet your Tiny house got pretty warm during the summer without it being insulated.
Hello 'Dirtpatcheaven' nice to see comments from other UA-camrs that I watch, I love these 'Modern Steader' networkings!
One pretty sweet building!! Love all the energy you have for your projects!! Progress!! Love it!!
Does that wood stove have another fire box on the box on the other side? i love ❤️ that old stove!
No that is a hot heater
Another busy day on a project....Nice!
Aren't you supposed to have some sort of hardboard behind the stove? Hope it is warmer.
We aren't done yet. Or you need to have the stove so far away from combustibles
I think they call them summer kitchens down south. But now it's a three season kitchen with wood heat. Maybe an air conditioner for next summer? What about FRP board behind the sink and stove area so you can wash it down when processing. It sure will come in handy and keep a lot of mess out of the house. Looking good homesteader.
We ordered the material that we will be using to cover the insulation with today! :0
I wou,d have Liked to seen how you insulated the ceiling. How you pulled the insulation in between the roof and ceiling(or I'm guessing you did)
Thank you for sharing.
This is a wonderful indoor kitchen. Have you considered adding a ceiling fan to move the air for more efficient use of heating? Will you be covering the insulation?
Yes I ordered the material today that we will be covering the insulation with.
The 2 of you are a great team with the work. Have you thought of thin paneling to cover the insulation. Or maybe peg board for extra easy storage? I look forward to seeing the changes.
I ordered the material today that we will be putting up in the outdoor kitchen
Yes it is , Happy Cooking . I enjoy your Videos even thou it was from a year ago. You have a Sweet Family .
You are a very hard working man! You are also very talented in building !
Not trying to tell you how to do things, if that’s fiberglass please use and wear protective gear. I learned this my many years as a female pipefitter at EB, building submarines. I was pretty good at it too. You ever thought of supplemental tosses of coal in your wood stove? It keep the house warmer , just a few here and there. We bought a cast iron grate for our living room and a cast iron stove in the basement and we have a cape with full dormer and we got a very warm house barely using number two heating oil. My husband cleaned and beat our chimneys so we never had problems. It’s up to you but it helped us a lot and the one stove in the basement made the temperature rise all the way up.
Andy is such a rebel! The outdoor kitchen looks much warmer now, but I agree that it was prettier before. Are you going to put anything over the insulation to make it pretty again? Great job!
Yes we are:)
I love yourstove
You certainly ended up with a nice spot to store firewood under the stove!
Yes it should be a good place to dry the wood too
Al. you should have a respirator on because of the fiberglass getting into your lungs. Also do you think it will cause a fire where the flu pipe goes out.
Love it!
Yup. The outside is still getting in.
Used primarily in the late-18th and early-19th centuries (though exceptions can be found), the summer kitchen had a number of practical applications in residential life. At its most basic level, the outbuilding physically separated hot kitchen activities from the rest of the house during the warmer months. I still would call your building an out door kitchen.
Maybe now it's just an off grid kitchen?? Either way, it is an amazingly functional space and I want one!! 👍
Nice job family. Love it 😍. Maybe cedar inside
Great family!! What are you going to use for the interior finish? Good Luck 👍 Vinny 🇺🇸
I am hoping it comes in on Friday. We ordered it today
Don't need a fireproof barrier behind your stove?
So has she been editing your videos?😊
It's whatever you call it, Al. It IS out doors aint it? lol
Well I'm sure it seems much warmer and quieter in there. The bearded insulators I've worked with would wear dampened paper masks, with a dampened bandana over it. Beards don't provide a good seal between mask and face. The dampened double layer gave them better protection against inhaling the glass fibers. As a rule they removed and bagged their work clothes before entering the house. This was to protect against bringing glass fibers into their living environment. Then straight to the shower, where they would rinse thoroughly without rubbing, turn off the water and later up with cheap shaving foam. The rinse removed much of the glass, the foam would lift the glass fibers and allow them to rinse away when the water was turned back on. Using a wash cloth and soap can embed the fibers into the skin, often causing rashes and irritation. Clothes were unbagged into the washing machine and washed twice.
That batting you used is designed for use in metal outbuildings, warehouses, factories and such. Typically with 6" deep walls, when finished inside, they would use 2x4's on 4' centers. This allowed for full loft of the batts and a dead air space between the batts and exterior walls. This air space allows for moisture to condense on the inside of the metal, and run off without dampening the batts, as well as air circulation between the materials. When in use it's best to allow fiber glass batts to achieve full loft for full R value. The air space in the batts provides better insulative value, as the air does not transmit heat and cold as well as solid materials. The 2x4's on 4' centers also allow for the use of any number of sheet goods for a finished interior. Drywall, plywood, melamine etc..
It will be interesting to see how you finish the interior and restore the off grid look.
like you say it was prettier before but once you chosen what you are going to cover it with it will look good again !! great job guys
Yea, that's still an outdoor kitchen. You should protect your self more when working with insulation. But this outdoor kitchen will be awesome. Wish I had one, but I have some other projects to do first. Greetings from Andreas on Off Grid Sweden
I wish we could do everything at once! Lol
Great job guys. Love watching your videos. Good luck.
My mother died of lung cancer. Of course Drs said it was from smoking...but she never smoked that much and had quit for many years. All of us kids told the Drs that and she had worked in a fiberglass cloth factory for years. She would come home "shining" from head to toe with fiberglass particles and wouldn't let us touch her until she took a bath and changed clothes. The factory did not provide any safety coverings, not even dust mask for any of the workers. I'm sure her lungs where fill of that glass. But Drs wouldn't even consider that. Cigarettes are always the bad and nothing else.
Which brand staple hammer do you recommend? Best quality/bang for your buck?
this is the one I have amzn.to/2zu8tC6
Thanks so much.
do not use fiberglass use Rock Wool -- its fireproof and an excellent insulator
It was prettier before, but will be functional all winter long now. That crazy Andy just doesn’t want to conform! Looking forward to the next video!
Your studs are so far apart - looks like 7 feet. Is that enough support for the roof when it has a deep snow load?
Looks like your youngn has her first job. PowerPoints for you website.
Nice job with the insulation. That'll make a hel of a difference for y'all.
Will those bladders be safe from the insulation flying around?
Probably not. They are a Moder Steader decoration now. :)
I guess if you have to go outside to get to it, it’s out door. That’s what I think. Over here we call them garden rooms. Thanks for sharing. I’m always looking forward to your videos.
I like that garden rooms. Where is over here?
Lumnah Acres 🇬🇧
Hi. I would have used mineral wool around the wood burning stove. It is fire resistant to 2000 degrees. You should compress the insulation as it loses its R value. Great job on the outdoor kitchen. I wish I could have one. 😀
growing up it was called a summer kitchen
Love the sound of rain on a tin roof. :-)
Yayyyy warmth! LOL Great job!
Gina seems so shy. 😊 Or maybe soft spoken is a better description? ☺️ You two are such a cute couple! TFS God Bless you all ~Lisa
Nice to see Gina in the video with you. The outdoor kitchen will be a great place to gather when working outside to take warm-up breaks from work and play. Will definitely help to keep some of the dirt out of main house. Did you add electricity to outdoor kitchen or do you want it to stay off grid?
How can you be outdoor if your'e indoor?
Tip on insulation.
Cover your skin with something like baby powder. It will keep the insulation from getting into your skin and make it wash off nicely.
Hah i agree your lucky if youve never had to insulate! but can be such a simple job to make such a big improvement. keep going strong!
Yes insulating is not fun but totally worth it in the end
My reason for an outdoor kitchen is to not cook in the house, especially in the summer. I wanted to put my stove out on our porch during a kitchen remodel but hubby laughed and couldn't fathom. So I gave it away. I have no oven, just a cook top, microwave and toaster oven. Nope, haven't cooked a turkey in 10 years.
Nancy Fahey I haven't had an oven for a few years, but i cooked a turkey breast in a crockpot this year.Unfortunately,my hardworking toaster oven went out the end of cooking on Thanksgiving!
Christie Betts. Ya I did cook a small Turkey in the crock pot. And 1 in the roaster on the stove top. But that doesn't count. It doesn't come out like the oven cooked. No stuffing, giblet gravy, crispy skin. That's it! I'm getting an oven.
Nancy Fahey No it really doesn't.I've thought about a convection oven
Christie Betts I was just looking and found a roaster oven for $37. I'm gonna try it out. Cooks a 22 pounder.
I agree it was prettier before. Prayers and blessings
We will get it looking nice again :)
Al you got to protect your lungs when working with insulation. Tip, use rockwool, that is insulation that doesn't burn and is easier to work with.
It keeps on getting better. But to answer the question: no. Once you walled it in and made it so you had to go IN through DOORS it became an INDOOR kitchen. What it is is a detached kitchen; it is detached from the house. It makes a great addition to your homestead for activities too big or not suitable for the house.
Looking forward to this in a couple weeks (not) 😀with the construction company i work for.Like you stated itchy and fiberglass fibers all over. Not so fun. I agree with others. looks better before, but me personally i prefer functionality over appearance
How about on summer season.. will take away the insulation..
What was the tool you were using to nail the insulation ?
Arrow Fastener HT50P Heavy Duty Hammer Tacker
With the insulation the sound is better.
Awesome! Thanks
Hey Al. so will you be finishing the inside with more rough sawn lumber or what is the plan? Never ends huh. Good job Bud
I ordered the materials this morning hoping that they come in on friday
The matter of insulation is irrelevant. It is not an indoor kitchen if you go IN DOORS to use it. Having to enter through doors makes it an indoor kitchen. What you have there is a detached kitchen. It is an indoor kitchen that is not connected to the house. Check out the outdoor kitchen on My Self Reliance. No walls, doors, or windows; that is an outdoor kitchen.
If not being inside a house qualified it as an outdoor kitchen, then every galley on a ship and every lunch truck would be an outdoor kitchen.
At my dad's I put 16 cups of water in the vacuum
What ever works! As long as it’s functional.
You live in NH, so I don't think anyone can fault you for insulating your outdoor kitchen.
Insulation..ugggaah! I hate fiberglass insulating most of all the construction aspects, like you said, a necessary evil. I got itchy just watching you! lol I think some of the comments about you should've warn a mask didn't realize you couldn't narrate with it on. I would've definitely sourced a 'tyvek' suit and worn gloves. The acoustics definitely softened with the insulation put up.
I noticed that either you have a new 'NH' mug or you glued the handle back on, nice coffee mug. Finished walls coming up!
P.S. I know that soup was delicious! Until next time God Bless You All
I got a new mug! I need one that says Lumnah Acres! :)
Could always attach a layer of chicken wire on the roof. Over time it will help to cut the sound of the rain.
Just need tile behind the stove and you will have it made.
Al, I do not like working with insulation. I am sure you do not like working with in solution either. We really do not have insulation in The Philippines. In Texas we use insulation to keep the heat out. In The Philippines, without insulation, our buildings can get very hot. Insulation is very hard to find. We just use the a/c and hope for the best. Out cooking source is outside and we have no need to heat an area, especially in the low, or flat lands. The mountains can get cool and the locals just use blankets. What type of interior are you planning? God bless America.
All I will say is I am ordering it today. That's to bad you cant get insulation in the Philippines
Yes, it is still a outdoor kitchen. ..isn't everthing built technically outdoors.
that is true
Hi............
I concur with wearing a mask, gloves and goggles over glasses...be careful with that stuff...need to be around for a long time....take care.
Cover the insulation with plywood, that should preserve the rustic integrity 🤓
Dust Mask, eye protection and gloves will help you deal
No surgical mask or dust mask Very bad news on your lungs SAFETY FIRST
Perfect job ! If you didn't insulate, I would be saying you're crazy not too ! Makes all the difference in the world, even if you used old corn cobs and newspaper which is what was in my 1870's home walls. Great video and awesome family !
what makes me laugh when measuring out things its a stick of butter n a cup of flour. not every country weigh in cups n sticks it would be good say so many grams lol
While necessary to have insulation, I wish you hadn't had to cover the beautiful boards.
Sorry Al, you really need to wear a face-mask while installing the glass fibre. I know from experience that you can end up with chest infections from breathing in that stuff.
Yup. When I got all finished I said I forgot my mask! Urgh....
When working with fiberglass insulation you should be wearing gloves, Respiratory Protection and eye protection.
All that plastic and glass fibers! Ugh! I would cover it with another layer of wood so the plastic doesn’t melt, you don’t breathe the insulation, and it will be prettier. And I would be wearing gloves and a mask while installing the insulation but I am sure it is both quieter and warmer!
I'm pretty sure he is going to cover it up
We ordered the materials that we are going to cover the walls with today.
As long as you don't hit the sash, it's pretty stable and no dustier than carpet.
Use some polyisocyanurate or PIR insulation. *removed bad taste joke*
PIR insulation, celotex is one brand name we have in UK, has the best R value for high insulation and you wont need a mask when cutting
Where is your mask?
......
