This happened to me before when I was working at mcdonald's and I told them the schedule that I needed and they agreed to it.And the manager said the same exact thing. Of course, I no longer work at mcdonald's.
I saw a hiring sign at a corporate gas station that they were hiring part-time, minimum wage, required availability for all shifts, and no second job. They stayed understaffed. Corporations have lost their minds with this crap.
Isn't it in a manager's job description to pick up shifts if no one else does?

Nope no no nope uhuh. Vacation is vacation. Only way I would go back to cover shifts while on vacation would be if the work was paying triple time and my vacation time would reset back to day 1 at the end of that extra shift
Report it and get a lawyer.
The go home advice was wrong. She can't guarantee that they won't get in trouble.

That is what happens in a inflationary period.
I would document the retaliation and then seek an outside lawyer. One of two things is gonna happen, the manager is going to be fired or the employee is going to get a nice settlement or both.
Except in Georgia it’s an “at will employment”state you can be fired for any reason except discrimination and even then you must have physical proof otherwise your gone
Also you’re “protected” from Being fired if you complain about safety violations to OSHA but that means nothing because your employer could just fire you for “not being productive” and it’s completely legal

Okay I've seen this story line on other channels and it's told slightly differently with the mgr. seeming more rude off the bat, but actually in this version of this, I do feel like Faith went snotty while the mgr. was legitimately just calling to ask for help. She was actually completely pleasant to Faith.

If a manager said that "poor planning" comment, I'd let 'em know I'm gonna drop what I'm doing and to expect to see me in person in their office immediately. My tone of voice could convey instantly that the "meeting" would be wildly uncomfortable for them.
This story makes no sense as when the last server' shift is over then the kitchen must be closing or already close, so no more clients particularly around 11Pm.

This is prevalent in trucking industry also local jobs go to school grads with ZERO experience and older experienced driver get told they are overqualified they act like 50 is old lol I can outwork these 22 year olds half who can’t even speak English and I don’t tear equipment up lol
The problem with these situations is that while standing up to them and refusing to be exploited for their convenience might win you the battle, it wont win you the war, so to speak. Just that your `in` that metaphorical war is the far bigger problem. It means it's `been` time to find a new job, and if you can't for whatever reason, and `must` work this crappy job to survive, then I'd suggest discretion is the better part of valor. Don't put yourself in a position of being destitute just to be right. Lie your tail off that you would love to but simply can't due to some obligation, and then make finding a new job your life's mission. Because if you think the environment was toxic before, aggressively refusing to `do her a favor,` is going to escalate it that much more, and you're not going to have a job much longer anyway. In that particular business, it typically manifests in them cutting your hours to the point you can't sustain yourself. It sucks, but that's reality.
I had a manager that had a habit of changing schedules willy nilly after they were posted. Schedule changes were to be brought to the attention of the individuals who were affected. After the 3rd time I was threatened with a write up and proof that I was not informed about the changes, I got corporate involved and that manager no longer was an employee. I was not the only one he was f-ing with.
This happens at every engineering company. That's why they tell people not to discuss pay.
Threatening her with retaliation is a violation of the law in the US and probably the most places.

This was my life for decades. Every stat holiday, I had to be the only one going in. No long weekends, no extra time off. While everyone else got to enjoy extra breaks for camping trips in the warm weather holidays, I was stuck alone at work. Christmas break? What tf was that. I couldn't have kids so I couldn't have time off to enjoy myself and have the extra breaks everyone else was allowed. Not like we should have even been open for those days either, and before my arrival we weren't open for those days. Once they found out I didn't have kids, suddenly holiday hours came into play and we went from being closed on holidays to being open full hours with only me on board. I walked off that job when I could see that no matter how much I did I wasn't going to get any return
This is why you stick to the employees contracted scheduled hours, and when department heads are used. Department managers get paid to multi and triple task, and is also why at the end of the year bonuses are given.
This is so like my situation. A new nurse is so aggressive AND incompetent. I lost 1000 bucks in December (net not gross) because I refuse to work with her. She is running off good employees.

I worked at a place where new hires got more than veterans. Most of the older staff immediately started looking for a new job the minute they found out. At least half of them did, eventually, quit, but a lot stayed on even though they had to fight for a pay raise. I was one of the new hires, and I came into the job with a lot of experience already, so I was able to step in and need minimal training. But I didn't stay there long. Not after seeing how those folks were treated.
