  • Since the beginning of the COVID-19 shutdown in NYC, Salem United Methodist Church (SUMC) and the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) have worked closely with Rethink Food to address food insecurity in the Harlem community.
The need is pronounced, with 25% of Central Harlem residents experiencing food insecurity - and many limited by lack of access to supermarkets or affordable, healthy options. But Barbara Ellison Miller and her team at SUMC have been working tirelessly to bring forward an average of 9.2K meals per week - from Tuesday to Saturday - to anyone who is looking for support.
Beyond using their own chef-equipped kitchen and ingredients form their in house vertical garden, our partnership has allowed restaurants with strong community ties (like Betty Park’s Manna and Chef JJ’s FIELDTRIP) to prepare a variety of delicious foods for recipients.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Barbara and catch up. Take a listen and see what’s happening in Harlem.
