    We recently had a Ford Explorer in our shop for a rear brake job. As part of that job, we have to replace the old pad retainer clips with the new hardware provided in the box. This process can be difficult.
    In this video, we walk you through our time-tested method to remove and install pad retainer clips.

    Tip:put a small amount of silicon brake grease on the ends of those clips, where they go into the holes. This will stop them from rusting to the caliper so you can easily remove them next brake job.

    Is the spring supposed to clip under the edge of the brake pad? When you took it off it looked like it was but you never put the new one back on the brake pad. Is this video incomplete?

    Can some kind soul confirm ..... So these puppies go into the main caliper body but do these clips rest against the carrier or both the carrier and the brake pad? Mine do not reach the pad. Thanks

    If all you are doing changing two clip, how long approximately would it take; from the time a car drove in to get it done?

      5 minutes
      Most of that time would be removing and putting the wheel back on

    My clip is stuck on there by rust and the other side broke off. How to bang it out?

    • @connor3288
      @connor3288 Рік тому

      I would use some needle nose and gently wiggle it back and forth while pulling to try to free it. If that doesnt work you could try heating the clip near where it goes into the hole as well as around the hole a little using propane or map gas, when hot quickly cool it with a wet cloth, then try the needle nose again. If still stuck you could spray with penetrating fluid and let soak into hole overnight, just dont get any on pads/rotors. For the broken off ones try the same method if you can grab onto the end with needle nose. Otherwise i would carefully drill the broken off part of the clip out of the hole, match up a new clip with the matching drill bit size for the right bit, and dont drill too deep.

    This must be a 2018+ I have a 2016 Nissan Altima with a squealing noise when applying the brakes at LOW SPEED. I can imagine it's no different at high speeds also. Brakes are New-ish. When doing the job a couple months ago, I bought O'riellys cheapest pads. Greased em up and threw em on. WAIT! There's a difference in the pads. The retainer clips didn't match the old ones. I matched each side up with one side both different inside/outside pads. Leaving each side with one brake pad equipped with retainer clip facing outward to the wheel. When I pulled them off Today, I found that every single pad inside AND out, had the same retainer clips or "squeelers". Assuming the "squealer pin" was the issue (since the pads are new-ish) had to be the issue. I bent each brake pad back and fourth until I snapped the 1/2 inch thin squealer pin off the pad connected with it looked to be a rivet. Put everything back together, and what do you know, .the noise was still there. Only, it wasn't alone. It brought another noise to the show. This one not as sheer. It was more of a continuous THUD. Could this be the zip ties used to hold my hubcap in place? Possibly. However, breaking the "squealer pins" off did NOT FIX THE SQUEEZING. Now back to the drawing board. Damn it.

    I've installed a lot of disc brakes on my cars over the years. But I'm putting new rear brakes on my 2004 silverado and the pads will only go on without the clips. With the clips on, there is not enough room for the tabs to slide in, even whin pounding with a rubber mallet. So I have to go without the clips. :(

      They would have fit if you had pressed in the caliper pistons.....

    Just wanted to find out what these pieces of crap are called. I have changed these in the past no problems. With that said, today I changed the rear pads and rotors on my 2012 mazda 3 for the first time. Eight years of NY winter salt and 86,000 miles welded them in. They would NOT come out. The first side I did I actually broke the lower portion off in the caliper and it kept breaking off until I had nothing left to grab. My only option was to drill a new hole right in front of the original. On to the second side after numerous applications of pb blaster and me cutting the clip in half I found that using channel locks applying pressure against the caliper to force it out was the best method. Last year I changed the front pads and rotors and the clips came out fine but I think it was the second time of changing the pads. However the rotors were stuck on so bad I had to cut them off the hub. After last years rotors and this years retainer clips I will never tell anyone again " do it yourself breaks and rotors are easy".

      Are the spring clips really even necessary? I had them break on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and can’t remove the remnant pieces.

      Also NY snow. Gotten a car from NY. Rattle clip got stuck. The other side got stuck as well. Thinking about banging a nail from the inside out.
