Whenever I'm singing, I see Chris Liepe standing right behind me saying, "Now, how do you make that note more engaging?" "How can you emote a passionate feeling into that phrase?" You have unearthed many vocal treasures within my voice, one of them being, singing with great dynamics and in-the-moment passion! My Soul is truly thankful for every bit of insight you share with us!!!
chris i honestly think your the best singing mentor on youtube or any other platform on the internet All the free singing knowlege that your giving us is insane
This is great to hear! I'm glad you're getting so much out of my content! If you haven't already, hopefully you'll eventually get to enroll in some of my courses... You think the free stuff is good :) ...
The greatest singers I find are ones that aren't just telling a story, they're acting as though they are genuinely in the situation described in the song. Amy Winehouse in Back to Black sounds like she's really genuinely heartbroken by her boyfriend leaving her (probably *was* the truth in that case). Michael Jackson in Smooth Criminal sounds distressed at Annie's violent demise. Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence feels like a prophetic warning, while Disturbed's take feels like building anger over the message being ignored.
...being interesting but not "enormously skilled"... neil young... unplugged suff. so much soul with so often not really in tune. but that makes it so relatable, too
Through a lot of hardwork and practice ive figured out over time how to get rasp safely. This seems like a fun new thing to try. And im always looking to make vocals interesting. Cool video man 👍
people connect to stories told with heart and passion - feel the message inside of you and pull it out with dynamic energy through the voice - I think that's what they call a performance - oh and then there's this hitting the right note thing that goes along with it... I've just discovered your channel and I want to sing.
When you mentioned nasality, I couldn't think of anyone else but Dave Mustaine's live performances, and Alice in Chains' recordings. They're very nasal, but it fits what they sing. And I've come to realize after the first few videos of your course that I can sing their stuff much easier than just trying to push my falsetto with chest voice. Great videos, man! And happy new year!
Spot on. Focus on guitar variation in song, ie. clean, distorted, acoustic, etc...and different techniques like tapping, chugging, etc. are all over music. Most songs don't apply this to vocals though. Very sterile. Amy was a master at this. I also feel like, unfortunately, many of the truly great ones have a lot of painful shit going on so they emote more with lyrics that are super meaningful to them. Great stuff as always, Chris.
Chris your videos always give me new ideas and a few weeks ago I had a light bulb moment and so far I've been doing the yodel thing more, it's been making hitting notes and having more control over notes and things way easier. 🤘you rock Chris. You have an interesting way of finding videos to make, your always coming out with great videos man.
Fantastic video and treasures in this one!. This is so key!!! This information changes everything about singing with expression and interesting at the same time.
I loved this video, you are incredibly good at explaining and illustrating, I have been trying to get to this empirically, so I thank you for putting this into words.
For me there’s a lot to unpack here. I’m primarily a guitarist so things come from that arena. So I first think of a guitar lesson I once saw about not being a “defensive” guitarist. Playing it safe. Hitting the notes but that’s it. Ironically, I think I’m not brilliant enough that I need to sing full otherwise it isn’t believable. If I half sing it sounds goofy. Which is to my second thought when I sing “sing it like I wrote it”. It’s a squishy thought but it helps me bring the right energy. And finally I guess one thing I get again and again is singing apart from the studio version. I love Paul McCartney and Billy Joel but they can be out of my range (chest voIce to chest voice for example) so singing without it helps me find myself in it. I could keep talking, got a ton from your tips. Much loved!
I've also noticed they play with the rhythm, sometimes lagging behind and also use blues notes (or in between notes that are not on the piano keys or guitar frets)
totally agree with this message, it has really helped me in my singing. Actually being conscious about what am I trying to express first of all. Really good video!!
I used to always hear teachers at music college recite the mantra "don't try to hit the notes, speak the lyrics and your voice will warm to match the vocal" but your explanation is so much more of an exposition on that idea ... Speaking the vocal is like a go to for a karaoke track in a crowded bar lol
Love this video. I think dynamics is one of the most beautiful thing to implement into your singing. I always think about Chino Moreno, when I think about dynamics, cause he's (to me) one of the singers who make something unique. And it always amazes me how he can flow through the notes (like he never stops on one note, touch it and go to the next one), and then just go two octaves up, and his approach in singing sounds so special. By the way, I really love every video of yours about Chester Bennington, cause I'm a fan too) And I would love to see your thoughts about any song from Dead By Sunrise. Vocals there are incredible!
Exactly my issue!!!!. I can't wait to listen. I look at it, I dont have a tambre that's exciting. I can sing 3 octaves as a male. And on key, but ....meh. so all that power and range buy its just dull to me. Idk
Yeah, that was great info! I’m working on a cover now and, well, I am hitting the notes. haha. Looking forward to tracking the vocals again with this approach.
Thank you for your help. That's remind me more about actor singers like jack black that uses a lot of expression in singing. Also the vocal from Tool that uses all the body to give a expression to the voice. Great video. I wish you all sucess
The guy that taught me what expression can do to a song: Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria. I would even love to hear Chris do a multi-part series on him, his voice is so interesting!
Very good videos. You make it easy for non-experts to understand. Since you did the analysis of Julian Casablancas on two albums I would like to see you analyze him on the "First Impressions Of Earth" album as he has a very interesting way of singing there.
Man I'd love for you to make a video of Paul Stanley But actually pick a song where he is belting. I would suggest Kiss 1984 live Detroit rock city Kiss I still love you unplugged Kiss my way Kiss exciter Kiss million to one Kiss I pledge allegiance to the state of rock and roll I think those really show of Paul's voice
Can you please analyze Liam Gallagher's voice from the band Oasis. I would recommend the songs Headshrinker, Stop Crying Your Heart Out, Live Forever, Slide Away, and Wonderwall. I just discovered your channel. You are dope!
Chris can you do a snuff break down from the Corey Taylor at The live acoustic version the grit in that version is so insane and so hard to do is very complicated 😂
I love your videos so much man I would love if u could do lynn strait his voice is very unique and I feel only someone of your caliber could breakdown his vocal techniques
The problem I have with this is that even THIS is very hard for us to do! Also, our vocal technique goes completely out the window and we hurt ourselves. Because we're concentrating on something else.
If you listen to your body, you may run up against discomfort and have to 'reset' and budget your vocal energy, but you won't hurt or do any damage to your voice unless you ignore symptoms and press into pain, which you should never do. But in order to find victory, you need to brush up against things that feel wrong so that you can feel what is right. In this way of looking at discovery, technique is not going out the window at all. It is front and center as you're exploring tonal and dynamic possibilities!
In Amy's case, it's both, and in most cases with the singers we love it's the dynamic switching back and forth between twang and direct nasal pass through that we can have full control over our tone!

Mission accomplished!!!
Amy had one of the greatest voices ever to grace mankind.
I’m glad you mentioned Amy Whinehouse in this vid, her voice has so much soul, and the way she sings is very interesting
It’s Amy WINEHOUSE NOT WHINEHOUSE
chris i honestly think your the best singing mentor on youtube or any other platform on the internet

Ohhh i will chris
I want to be a musician and Amy Winehouse has always been a huge inspiration for me. Thank you!🙏🏾

Her cover "i love you more than you ever known" was sublime. I gad to replicate her belt though it wasn't "high" it was pleasing in the ears.
So good!
I love the way you laugh at yourself Chris before you launch into yet another mind and vision expanding demo. This one is a gem. Thankyou.
liking it even before watching it fully yet as i know it will be really good
Same.
Thanks for the trust :)
That was probably the most useful information I’ve heard about singing in a long time. Thanks Chris!
You're very welcome! Glad to hear it was so useful to you!
I love that you're using these type of singers.
...being interesting but not "enormously skilled"... neil young... unplugged suff. so much soul with so often not really in tune. but that makes it so relatable, too

YES! I've been wondering this for myself for ages, but never knew how to put it into words.
Thanks, Chris!
Happy to help!

Extremely helpful and incredible information!
This was really good Chris. Im going to practice with my favourite songs.
Sooo helpful to me as a brand new singing student! Thank you for your content!!! ❤

Another brilliant video, Chris! You've helped me better understand and develop my voice quite a bit over the past year! Thanks!

Very interesting approach ! I like it, it does ring true with my own experience, or lack thereof, in being more expressive :) thanks for the video
Thank you so much for sharing this!!!!!
You are so welcome!
This is REALLY FUNNY 😂😂😂😂😂BUT ALSO REALLY HELPFUL!!!! For us introverts trying to learn to sing thank you so much !!
I've also noticed they play with the rhythm, sometimes lagging behind and also use blues notes (or in between notes that are not on the piano keys or guitar frets)
Loved it you touched on my top two fav singers
totally agree with this message, it has really helped me in my singing. Actually being conscious about what am I trying to express first of all. Really good video!!
You’re amazing Chris
I may try this song next
You’re such a great teacher 👍😍

This is some good advice! Thanks man

Great Chris! Many thanks!!!
I need to do this, and also find some kinda personality. My singing is very boring. Gonna work on this now.
Thank you Chris.
That's some very good advice!

Very good videos. You make it easy for non-experts to understand.

Good video! Thx
Your a bad ass bro love your videos you teach me so much

Man I'd love for you to make a video of Paul Stanley
But actually pick a song where he is belting.

Kiss million to one
Kiss I pledge allegiance to the state of rock and roll
I think those really show of Paul's voice

Do vocal runs next

Always awesome Chris, justified musical insanity lol
Would you do a vocal performance and vocal production review/critique on an original song?
The song is “Christmas Day” by Ricochet. It’s on all platforms and UA-cam if you are interested!!!
Chris can you do a snuff break down
from the Corey Taylor at The live acoustic version the grit in that version is so insane and so hard to do is very complicated 😂

Hey sir, please please please make video of Jamie Hails from polaris if you do that that's helps me a lot😊
I’m gonna practice these in the shower hehe
Dear Mr. Liepe,
Can you please do an analysis of Marilyn Manson’s singing?
ua-cam.com/video/CRz3dfOftPk/v-deo.html
Unusual approach)))👍
It's the "Liepe Way".
You think you can do a vocal analysis on John Lennon, I think yer blues is amazing song
Talk about post malone pls :o
is it nasality or actually a twang with closed nasal pasage though?
In Amy's case, it's both, and in most cases with the singers we love it's the dynamic switching back and forth between twang and direct nasal pass through that we can have full control over our tone!
Comment for da algorithm
Streak count: 158
This is a mystery i have just learnt to become a good singer
This is why I sing depressed songs, I can express them well 😂😌😔
My hands go wild when I sing... lucky I wear a guitar to give them something to do
🙊🙊🙊
