The non-smoking ad scared children? GOOD.
Right? Like, what are parents hoping for? A big fluffy bunny that comes out and sings a song about cigarettes? If I ever have kids, I'll HOPE cigarettes and drugs scare the shit out of them.

I’ll be honest the non smoking ad that did me in as a child and haunts me to this day was way better than this one. Was a little girl having a tea party and giving her teddy bear a cigarette. While the caption said something along the line that children watch everything you do and copy everything you do.🧐

So many commments of 'UK is soft'. Out of a population of over 60 million, number 1 had 1671 complaints! Most of us weren't the least bit offended

Because everyone I know here is not easily offended) I wouldn't think people in the UK take offense the way a lot of us do. xD But Canadians are the most hardcore as far as not giving a fuck who they scare with PSAs. xD

But at least in Britain the ads accurately reflect the ethnic makeup of the population (rolls around the room laughing hysterically).
I like the music in the Volkswagen advert. “Sing a kind of melody, sing eins, zwei, drei, vier” is stuck in my head.

isnt the point of adverts liked the hooked campaign and barnados/st johns etc, to shock people into realising the truth about the society we live in? i was a child at this time, and when i saw them it just made me think about how bad smoking is, and that there are many people less fortunate than i was, and how important it is to help others as much as possible. might just be me, but reminding people about humanity isnt inappropriate.

When I was a kid, my parents didn’t let me watch television regularly. I’m not saying that that’s a solution, but they do have options they can choose to minimize the effects of television messages. Not everyone is learned enough to teach their children how to evaluate the implied messages.

The "Dog Breath" one did make me gag when I was younger, to be fair.
I look at it through my granddaughter's eyes and I could see it being pretty scary for children.

Number six, yes it could be considered scary but that's the reality and that's what thousands of kids deal with? like that "circle" is happening right now, unless it's advertised it's never going to stop.

@@Mangobaskets True, I vividly remember being scared to death by anti-smoking ads, and it was always the nightmarish tone and surreal visuals that disturbed me, not the message. I think the directors of most of those videos are smoking something.
Or biting into an orangutan's fingers. Or seeing a mutated rabbit of a drunk dad during dinner. Or literally all of it. Especially Ventriloquist.

I liked the Volkswagen one. But, even more violent scenes are shown in kid shows. The complaints for that were silly.

The one that affected me the most was the Barbados one,but it was suppose to.
Some of them, ye I have to say, were mildly disturbing, such as the smoking one with the hook, but it’s not that bad, there are worse adverts out there in this world.
It angers me that people complained about the Marie Stopes video. Am I missing something? Did abortion just become a top secret act? Women NEED advice sometimes. What do you think happens when women have no idea who to go to when they have an unwanted pregnancy? Women have died way too many times trying to do it alone. The ad didn't say 'call us and we'll give you an abortion', it said it's there to give advice. There were no offensive words in it, no offensive images, it didn't even contain the word 'abortion' for heavens sake!
It's because people think abortion should be banned in the UK and they cry about anything they see as promoting abortion.
American-style sidewalk 'counsellors' (for counsellor read harasser) are starting to appear outside UK abortion clinics to try and stop women from entering the premises

Nia Jenkins It's basically the same thing with Planned Parenthood here in the US. Out of all the clinics throughout the country, only 3% do "terminations". The rest do cancer checks, PAP smears, counseling, etc.
I can guarantee more people support abortion than are against it, certainly better than going to steezy places and getting a coat-hanger up your chuff. Odd are 16-21 year old girls aren't ready for a kid so having an option for mistakes is better than bringing in a life that is destined to fail is much better

I live in the UK and I think some of these advertisements never needed to be banned. Not even the KFC one or the Volkswagen one.
The hooked advert really scared me as a kid, so much so that when they decided to advertise it in newspapers my Dad had to rip out the page and burn it.

Because it's simply not true. C02 is grossly exaggerated because every breathing animal on planet earth has been pumping hundreds of millions of tons of the stuff into the air for thousands of years.
There are these things called "trees" that actually TAKE IN C02 and convert it to oxygen.
But of course, if you live in a city your whole life you might forget that those exist. But that doesn't mean trees are extinct, if you actually look more than a few miles away from your front door.

The Barnardo's one really got me because I was slapped round the back of the head like that so many times at about that age. I still don't like people coming up behind me. It was always for the tiniest thing too and it would make my head spin and my ears ring.
i remember the Dog Breath one from Caddicarus. i think i was already 17 when i first saw it, and it still left a permanent scar in my mind. i think about it every time my breath smells particularly horrible.
Number 1 was funny! How could it get any complain? It's your job as a parent to keep YOUR Child from doing things that you deem doesn't fit, after all.

I think it's because all pregnant women seemed depressed in the video, and call us if you need help, as if they needed help in getting rid of the baby, which is what I saw after reading the complaints, but in reality, I wouldn't have over analized an add to such an extreme measure.
Some of them are not funny thought but should have complaints about them take the non smoking and Barbados adverts people shouldn't complain when they're telling the truth.

3:19 I remember this one (would of been 5 at the time) and as a kid it literally just went over my head- I can assure you the parents complaining were probably the ones who consider slight human contact an act of violence.

Same, I think it was done well. It didn't mislead at all, and the ending made people think about their choices. Far too many people would rather silence things promoting thought rather than accepting blame.

Most research being funded by governments who obviously have a heavily vested political rather than factual interest. The fact the advert is BY the government says all you need to know. The researchers aren't going to tell their financiers the opposite of what they want to know or being paid to find!!
Hypothetically, if it is the cause, all the time air traffic is as high as it, ships use diesel and we shop online so cheap goods are transported around the world to fulfill those orders / or those good have foreign components, turning the odd lightbulb off is like taking a cup of water out of the sea and thinking you're about to empty the ocean.

haha people complaining about advert 6 being "not suitable for children watching" the advert is specifically targeted at young adults, advertising help that is available to them about the issues addressed: abuse at home, bullying in school, drug abuse, violence, ultimately ending up locked up in a cell. but i suppose, either way people are going to say it's not effective enough or it's offensive.
I don't live in the UK but my school will always show us graphic ads in non-smoking presentations and I remember one day being so traumatized and telling my mom that I'm never touching a cigarette in my life. Even now whenever I have temptations I just watch these ads to remind me of where I stand when it comes to my health. Yeah we probably shouldn't scare and traumatize kids but when it comes to drugs, I say its fine to let all hell loose.
I remember seeing a lot of these on TV back in the day. . . the Pot Noodle and Phones 4 U adverts in particular stick out in my memory

I expected to see something really horrible at number 1 like that advert with the dying girl at the side of the road and it says "10mph slower and she would have lived"....instead I got people eating with their mouths full. We are silly people...

***** No, actually. If someone aborted it at nine months or something that crosses a line. But there's a ban (at least in the UK, idk about elsewhere) on abortions after a five month mark. I'm condoning abortion before the five month mark, not after, because there is potential that a baby could be born at around the six month mark and be relatively healthy. If it can be born and be reasonably physically healthy, you shouldn't abort it, but it's not my place to stop anyone if they try to, unless it will severely harm them if they try to.
I politely ask you to inform yourself on how abortion works. Its not dead cells. The fetus is alive during the time of abortion (4th-6th month i think). It can also feel pain. So you cannot say its heartless.
So of all the rude, vulgar, immoral and violent adverts we complained about here in the UK, the one that riled us up the most was people talking with their mouths full of food. I love this place

I remember alot of these,especially the Bernados advert.Me and me brother were not long adopted and our mum stopped cooking and came over to hug us.

Only really disturbing one was the 'Hooked' one, which wasn't even that bad apart from the bit where the hook actually went inside his mouth, but honestly kid's TV nowadays is more gruesome than this stuff.
