  • This video discusses fundamentals of Direct View LED terminology and how to choose the right application for your display needs before investing in LED display technology.
Why Choose LED? LED displays feature a thin design paired with optimal picture brightness, clarity and quality. LED displays are also easy to daisy chain together for larger, extended display needs. LED displays are better for the environment as a result of their longer lifespan and lower energy consumption. Because LED displays are constructed of many individual LEDs or LED panels, these individual LEDs or LED panels can be replaced with ease, saving you from having to buy entirely new displays.
Here are some fundamental terms to keep in mind as you read on about how to choose the right LED display for your needs:
LED: Stands for Light Emitting Diodes
Nits: Refers to the brightness of the LED screen
Pixel Pitch: Refers to the distance between each LED pixel, measured in millimeters
When looking to invest in LED displays, consider the following factors for your individual display environment:
    1. Placement - Will it be placed on a retail floor, in front of a window with potential sun glare, or outdoors exposed to the elements?
    2. Brightness - What level of brightness do you need depending on where it will be placed and distance from your intended audience. LED display brightness is measured in "nits". A nit is a unit of measure for the total brightness over one square meter of an LED display.
    3. Optimal Viewing Distance - How far away will your intended audience be from the LED display? LED image quality is determined by "pixel pitch," which is the distance between each LED pixel, measured in millimeters. As a result, pixel pitch needs vary depending on your optimal viewing distance. A good rule of thumb for choosing the right pixel pitch is 1 millimeter of pixel pitch per 5 feet of viewing distance. As the size of the pixel pitch increases, so does the optimal viewing distance. For example, consider a household LED TV screen which would have a smaller pixel pitch than a much larger, stadium LED screen that would have a larger pixel pitch for longer distance optimal viewing.
