At 11:13 in the video it looks like a puff of smoke came out of the box. Did anyone else see it? I know from experience if you let the smoke out of an electrical device it's done.
Check out your coil. When they start going bad they work fine until it gets some heat in it, then they stop working. Let it cool down and it works again.
Great video probably helped a lot of people trouble shoot their msd boxes may at least save them some money uncle Terry helped a lot by the way he explained everything
the MSD gets hot, something over loads & cuts off like a heated capitor/resistor or maybe a Relay. Let rest, cool down, then boom back up & running, try Replace the MSN (to test) or get it rebuilt. How old are the Coils, did you test the coil(s)? I've had a few pick up module's in the Distr. go bad & started cutting off.
I had a 6AL and billet distributor in a small block chevy that would miss at 6500 to 7000 RPM never could figure out took the box and did what you did and tested ,did everything you discussed, put old HEI back in never missed solt it all at a swapmeet
I have run MSD boxes on all my race and older street cars with no problems. This include triggering with point or an MSD style dizzy. However I always wire the power and grounds directly off the battery with no connections in between to create any resistance. As we all know resistance is futile.... and have had zero problems. Also I tidy up all the loose wires not used and leave no bare ends. Part of that is my OCDC...or was that acdc?
I went through two of them went back to my old six AL box that I sent off had fixed still going 4 years later. I’ll stick with the old MSD box I don’t k like the MSD box second design 🤨sucks don’t get them Hot !!put them in side the car with you not literally
Been there done that, and had MSD boxes go Tango Uniform on me. It could be worse.. Always tape up or heatshrink the loose unused wires. :) The 6AL I was running on the 68 LeMans, the one with the blower, was hard starting and running erratic, plugged a different 6AL box in and it runs great. Almost definitely a ground problem, but I only needed to move it out of the shop and put it away for the winter. Here in a few months I will probably rewire the entire car again, and fix the brake light switch.. the pedal needs a positive stop because right now it just decides to move the switch out of the way. Yay more time standing on my head under a dash, and this time I get to enjoy it with a roll cage to add to the fun.
Your 70 Lamans ? you got 2 ( I think ) a green one and a rust covered one ( we call it the rust bucket.) Why not just use a super hot shot HEI and throw that box away. Make a Torphy out of it.
Great video Austin. I just removed my 12 year old MSD 6AL-2 box and it was still working fine. I upgraded to the Holley Hyperspark to match all of the ignition system and clean up the wiring. But I have blamed other problems on my MSD before I learned to troubleshoot my ignition system. Great content here as usual. ua-cam.com/video/WksWvjeaBJ0/v-deo.htmlsi=q_9oC1W4fg-8fGh4
Uncle Terry needs his own UA-cam channel. He is a wealth of information!!!
I'm 70 years old, I still learning something every day! 😊 Thank you for sharing!😊

Belushi was from Wheaton IL. He was a football star in High School.

RTR - Ready to Run Distributor and it requires a solid 12 volts.
RTR, Ready To RACE!

Im 67 and i
still hate wiring if you can get a new harness i would do that. It will save you the headach of tracing wires
RTR means Ready to Run.

Its probably just a loose connection between the steering wheel and the driver seat?
Basically, Uncle Terry was telling you in a nice way that it was operator error.
That’s the same Terry I see on old man’s garage channel ? He must be famous Jeff’s guy lol

Maybe RTR means that it was "returned" due to not working?

If the wiring harness is as bad as you said it was (done by a forth grader) then I would go with a new harness and not look back.
Bad ground?
the GUTS in the NEWER MSD units are "POTTED" in epoxy type stuff

MSD stands for Might Suddenly Die.
They're junk. Been having problems with them since the early 2000's
At the end all the electric issues no brainer
I have had plenty of 6AL not a single issue
