Upgrading our SAILBOAT's KEEL [Ep 159]

  • This was a great upgrade to our sailboat. Cory kept working on the hull and decided to modify our keel for a few reasons. The epoxy work continued with a few fixes and upgrades. We also finally install our new depth sounder. Good thing Green Cove Springs Marina is convenient for doing work on your sailboat yourself because SV Wildly Intrepid is getting a facelift this year.

    Wow never realized how much the boat needs upgrading. Seems painting and preparing yearly. Interesting just like a house but totally different. I believe you really need to do your research before you start. Unlike just change the location of a nail. Good job on how to do. I even understand some what. Enjoyed and learning every time.
    Can't wait for that little one to come any day now congrats.😍⛵👶❤💓💓💓

      It's constant maintenance for sure. And being out of the water makes life a lot easier for many projects. Glad you understood some of it. The painting is something you often do if you don't want to be scraping the hull as often under water.

    What's the saying....Doing boat work in exotic places....well compared to Vancouver Island Florida is exotic...There is always the "Satisfaction factor" when the job is done. As funny as that might be I find it feels really good. The boat is going to be a better environment...Good job guys. Trev

      Thanks Trev and the saying is right. And Florida is more exotic for sure. Although the weather was almost as comparable to Vancouver last winter. It was so worth it doing all of that. Less scraping and maybe even faster.

    I have had issues with the pump not working as well as they should on stored epoxy - I just use an inexpensive food scale and do by mass now. West Systems has directions when mixing by mass to follow

      That pump was really good when first purchased. But after storing, the pump would just keep dripping. Mass would be a good idea.

    Get some FSR by Davis. It will clean the waterline off with no scrubbing.

      Might have to try that next time. Where do you get it?

    Great video as always! You may want to compare 4200 vs 5200. 4200 is not as still and easier to remove. Just had to chisel out my transducer to replace last month. Cheers!!! :)

      Thanks Scott. For underwater we always use 5200 for extra piece of mind. Harder to remove to not impossible. Above water though 4200 is great especially for portlights. What kind of transducer did you get?

      @@WildlyIntrepid I bought a raymarine chartplotter and used their recommended one. It just does depth but I could also use a forward sonar. Airmar 600w transducer.

    it is good to glass in your keel, the designer of the Kraken 50 complained about the boat industry going exclusively to bolt on keels, which over many many years can rust through and fall off!!!!

      We tend to trust the designers of boats more than ourselves but every addition we make we hope to improve our boat in one way or another. Its good to know the designers are thinking along the same lines as us in this case

    I use syringes with epoxy too, way better. Its that or weigh it.

    • @WildlyIntrepid
      @WildlyIntrepid  3 роки тому +1

      They do work really well. Bigger syringes might have been easier for bigger projects though.

    You should have laid more glass over that keel edge going wider on next three layers

    • @WildlyIntrepid
      @WildlyIntrepid  3 роки тому

      Ideally yes but we put 1 layer of really thick stuff and another larger one with less heavy matte.
