- In this video, Cruising Sailboat Refit BEGINS with a Keel Repair in Florida, I buy a car and make the 28 hour drive from Nova Scotia Canada down to Jacksonville Florida to start our boat refit in getting Balachandra back in the water! We receive an amazing gift from Total Boat and I repair our long overdue broken baby stay using a sta-lok fitting. I remove the old keel joint patch and re-do it using epoxy and fairing compound.

In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat. After 2 frigid Canadian winters in the North Atlantic we untied the lines and headed south to cruise in the Caribbean for another 2 years, exploring as far as Grenada. Sailing Balachandra is our UA-cam sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos, La Vagabonde, Sailing Uma and Project Atticus, we document the sailing adventures of myself (Dan) and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros, cons, costs, essentials, trials and tribulations of living aboard a sailboat full time. Thanks TOTAL BOAT for supporting the channel
So happy you’re back. You’ve been missed!
Finally I found a detailed video on repairing the keel-to-hull joint for a lead keel! You provided fantastic information and I really appreciated the detailed explanation. I live 2 blocks from a Princess Auto in Wpg so I’ll have check out that sanding tool. Will save me a lot of time. Now to get to the keel repair on our C&C 32. Cheers!
Glad to see you are back at the boat. Looking forward to the vids. Cheers.
Love the detail of your explanations and video quality for our refit... Many of us will learn from this! Please continue!
Welcome back stranger
Good to see you making videos again!!
Great to see that you’re back to your boat. Recovering from surgery… looking forward to returning to our sailboat soon!
Good to see you back🦀

welcome back have missed you
Thank you!! Glad to be back!
I’m doing the same job to my c&c 30 next month, great video👍
Welcome to the C&C club
Nice boat
Niagara Falls Ontario
Nice to see you back at it, also nice to get freebies (yes I am a bit jealous). Don’t mean to be too pedantic but it is a new Sta-Lok fitting not swage. Cheers
I know :) all the other fittings we have are swage. Hard to break the habit of saying it!
Be glad she has a lead keel, I've ended up stripping my Iron keel completely, guess we'll see how how Total Boat does at smoothing out a pitted iron keel now that it's finally warming up.
A While Back You Had The Boat In A Nova Scotia Marina That Had A Bubbler For Winter Wet Storage. I Can't For The Life Of Me Find That Marina. Any Chance You'd Share The Name Of The Place?
Glad to see your back. You mentioned barrier coat and raising the waterline, will you be re-applying the boot stripes after in the new raised position? I've seen boats that have raised the waterline and later omitted the boot stripes....hideous!
Cruisers don’t need no boot stripes
I have to agree with this. Scrubbing those stripes every week was not fun..
Great to see you trying g to fit the baby stay fitting. You didn't get the wires on properly, this will become an issue when it comes down to the crunch.
Have another look at it please.
BTW, what was the tape for at the 12" mark? Bizarre.
Yeah I just followed the instructions that sta lok themselves give you which mentions nothing about sealants or lock tight or anything... they need to re-address their packaging and media
Thank you for the video. I might have missed something, but what is the piece of electrical tape at 11'' for? (9:14)
Great question - i think just to wedge the threaded piece so it stays out of the way while you work
Will Noel be joining you soon?
She's excited to get the boat back in the water. We have some work to get done first. Probably a watermaker and a few other things before we can launch.
So Sta-Lok themselves don't mention anything about lock tight or sealant in their instructions for installing a fitting however for servicing and longevity I think it's sensible and would recommend adding it. That said, I admit my first attempt at adding this fitting is not by any means up to pro rigging standards but I will attempt to re-address this fitting in the future. Our babystay is Non-functional. We have NEVER used it. It is a carry-over from the boat's racing days when bending the mast forward in an insane upwind angle means flatenning the mid-section in the main sail to gain you about 0.1 knots speed which is totally ridiculous and ill-advised on an aging cruising boat. Many C&C owners have removed it altogether.
Good to see you are back! BTW, honestly that babystay wire doesn’t look that good…. The strands looked a bit stained already and honestly the wire ravel close to the sawageless assembly didn’t end up that good ..🤣🤣🤣 I’ll replace that wire and play it safe.. is not expensive and you can reuse that terminal. Besides that, you forgot to add sealant inside the terminal and add thread locker…
Thanks for the tips. Yeah you're right, my first attempt. We don't actually use the baby say... never have so making it really solid wouldn't matter too much unless we were into racing and needed to hyper flex the mast shape which I think is a terrible idea to begin with :)
