Warm Regards,

A video like this could not thrive on TikTok, Instagram Reels, or even Facebook for that matter. This is my attempt to explain what's good about UA-cam, and to encourage decisions within UA-cam's leadership to consider leaving a bit of money on the table in favor of protecting the beautiful cathedral that they have created for us. Following the short-term numbers will destroy the beautiful thing you have created, but if you stay the course and stay true to Your Voice, I believe the fact that Educational content thrives here on UA-cam will ultimately make you win in the end. Thank you to those who work at UA-cam for making a platform where beautiful things like this can exist. The challenge now is to fight to keep it this way, when the siren song of more dollars is no doubt trying to pull you away from that which is good.
Well said!
☝️☝️☝️ this is so extremely important. Thanks for all you do & God Bless You!
Your awesome Destin
That was a good choice of verse at the end, Destin. I have watched your channel for years and I really appreciate your content.
Thank you! I'm so happy you are resisting the shorts movement, while there may be a place for such things - When I see a SED video, I know it's great content and I want there to be a substantial amount of info being hurled in my direction. Thank you for saying it so well, I agree
Thanks for this thoughtful video Destin. I am constantly reminded of how ‘the medium is the message’ which makes me wonder what is the real message of UA-cam? I think for a long time the message of UA-cam has been in depth, quality content, which contrasts with other social media platforms. Like you I hope they keep it this way and don’t keep trying to copy every other platform out there. What I love about your work is you’ve never lost your voice. Thanks for using your voice for good on here.
Yeah
you fell off + ratio + the hood watches Tom Nicholas now
I was a bit sad when you made the video about the need to change your titles due to the algorithm, it felt like youtube already started evolving to bury your (and destin's and many others') quality channels under piles of clickbait fiesta without any substance behind.
It reminds me of an old interview of a leader of the first TV channel in france (TF1) explaining the meaning of their programs is to sell people's attention to the advertisers...
Its weird because I noticed the evolution of Derek's and Destin's channel. Not in a negative way, but just noticed how much more in depth their videos were progressing. I still found myself watching videos that were 15-25 min long and was still engaged just as much as the 10 min videos. STILL incredible content from my favorite creators, learning subjects I had no idea I was interested in. YOU really are getting smarter everyday. Thank you guys for the content over the last 10-12 years. The impact has not gone unnoticed. Cheers
I appreciate the kind words Derek. I appreciate you and count you as a true friend. I’ve really enjoyed your work lately for many reasons. I’m excited to see you hit your stride and lead us all towards more intelligent content.
Thank you Destin for the fun photo project!
Running around Paris to find the exact same spots and capture it again was like a really cool Indiana Jones adventure!

Very good points. To add to the conversation, I'm not a fan of the dislike button no longer showing the count either. Now it's harder to sort through tutorial videos. I learn how to do some household tasks like change outlets here on UA-cam. Now I can't tell if the video is clickbait, low quality, or if everyone got electrocuted unless I read the comments in every video. The problem is, content creators can turn the comments OFF. So now people here on UA-cam can curate a well crafted lie for watch time, and even propaganda can flourish now. I think they're creating a monster without even realizing it. The UA-cam shorts are only going to exacerbate this downward trend too.
Very valid point.
I have cut down on new content since they removed the buttons numbers. That's ok, I have got plenty i know are good.
Its all part of youtube becoming a better part of the Marxist-Communist-Socialist propaganda machine.
I remember when they did the same thing with the thumbs down on comments. That’s when UA-cam comments went from mostly helpful and quality to trolling and garbage. This will have the same effect on their video contents quality. It’s a huge mistake.
I suggest we all use the feedback option in the app to let them know, we want it back and why. If I was looking up a repair or troubleshooting video. I used the likes to dislikes as a meter of the reliability of the video.
Agreed. I'm not a fan of shorts, but rather more thorough content. Shorts, TikTok and reels are fine, but everyone wants to be what UA-cam is. UA-cam shouldn't try to be what they are not.
I prefer trousers in winter
God, why is everyone making shorts?! It's December for Christ sake.
@@unlokia That could actually work as a pretty good metaphor. TikTok lives in a hot climate and wears shorts, and now UA-cam is seeing them wear shorts and now UA-cam wants to wear shorts too. But it's just going to end up with UA-cam getting frostbite because it doesn't work in this climate.
What shorts are doing is basically reuploaded tik toks. Most of the shorts I watch are just short food clips from content creators who upload on tik tok and youtube shorts side by side. Basically somewhat a reincarnation of vine. It's a format that fits certain contents but not the long-form video youtube is already providing
UA-cam thrived with short videos about cats, memes, and "fails" during its beginning and by dropping them they allowed tiktok to pick up the idea and grow as a contender. UA-cam is not copying other platforms by using shorts. UA-cam WAS the main platform for short videos, and corporate karen made the mistake get rid of them by punishing creators who made them.
Long videos are fine, but some of us also have been enjoying short videos for over 15 years in this platform. I'd rather have both.
UA-cam needs to be replaced with something better. Removing dislike view is such a dumb decision, one of many these past few years.
You can try something like Rumble, but those are political echo chambers
@@NickzAndMikz You mean it's a certain group of people that were censored off of UA-cam?

Completely agree. So many other UA-camrs I see just copy the latest trend or success, rather than stick to their style that gave them the passion in the first place.
Welp, this particular video is _not_ what Destin was/is about.
It's just another meta/self-absorbed/introspective piece like a million other youTube-identity-crisis "who am I, what is youTube... _really_ , etc." monologues.

I use UA-cam mainly for education. I watch tutorials and DIY projects, and the dislike button saved me from wasting my time with bad videos, because people with more knowledge than me would dislike something that is wrong.
Now I have no idea if something new for me is correct or wrong !!! UA-cam just destroyed education!!! 🤬
Why I usually read comments first.

Same. I'd use the dislike ratio as a barometer on if it was terrible advice or if the video was click bait. UA-cam already takes down comments on the regular. Not a good way forward.

After the disappearance of the dislike counter it's clearly harder to see yt in such a positive light, but i think that the overall message is still extremely important AND relevant, all content producers should take this message to heart, if they didn't already by themselves.

Each of the moments included the unfiltered responses of those involved. Sheer exaltation, shock, and dismay are all at play here.
KEEP SHARING THESE MOMENTS! And keep including your friends throughout the world.
Well done Destin.
SNATCH BLOCK!
I also don't like how they removed the dislike button. It's going down the path of the other platforms that also don't have dislikes. It really provides a good measure of whether a video is actually good or bad. It is supposed to be a useful tool, but some people just use it as a weapon and now we all have to suffer without one of UA-cam's greatest tools.
Other than YT Rewind I never encountered a video where the dislike count impacted whether I was going to watch. It may have made me feel better about disliking it, seeing that many others did as well, but I'm genuinely curious whether it changed your behavior -- not your opinion.
almost nobody used it as a weapon - people used it to express their actual opinion of disagreement. Often at UA-cam itself. And youtube didn't like that.
@@x--. It's actually very useful for education videos and tutorials, so you can see which ones are more trustworthy or useful to other people
Yeah, ratio is gone, so bye-bye useful indicator if the video is actually good. Now the likes are less valuable too because they stopped being compared to anything. Should I compare them to the number of views the video has? It's so clunky and backward and hardly tells about video quality at all.
@@x--. The dislike count was a tool I used for determining if I was going to watch an educational video.
A key example would be when looking for a video on how to do a simple car repair.
The dislike number helped me avoid click-bait videos, and guide me to the one video that told me what I needed in less than ten minutes.
-
The dislike counter helped avoid clickbait videos that are just re-postings of other peoples' content in a long video of marginally related content.
I agree about Notre Dame; most of the reason people want to visit is to see that time capsule; how all the parts of such a building encapsulated a period of time in France and Europe's history, and the relationship the Catholic Church had with art, architecture, and civil engineering.
When you randomly change bits of it to have modern art, you lose part of the spirit of the cathedral, what makes it what it is.
Hasn't ND literally been changed and altered through the past tons of times though ?
Nobody really said anything about those instances. It just occured and anyone adapted to the alterations as still representing the " original " entity.
Ya no, Notre Dame is very much a living and changing edifice. It has endured many ravages of history from wars and uprisings to the slog of time, and if it weren’t for Victor Hugo it might have been torn down entirely.
I personally think it should have been slightly changed and updated after the fire. There is nothing more Notre Dame than an update after turmoil.
Hi when is turning pi2 vid coming?
France becoming slowly but surely a muslim territory and you can tell by living here that people are more and more looking to copy and spread north African culture . That's why in some city like Strasbourg or Marseille it's always easy to find cash for a new mosque rather than refreshing to identical an old and lesser attractive over time church or cathedral .
it encapsulated the whole period of time between the 12th century and today, it has never stopped changing over the centuries. If people visit it and think it hasn't, they're missing the point
I am Greek and I've noticed the chanting at 19:15 starts with "Kyrie eleison" which means "lord have mercy" but its Greek (Κύριε Ελέησον)...since Greeks are orthodox christians - Eastern Orthodox Church (also Russians - Serbs etc.) i didnt expect to hear that in a Catholic cathedral .. well i learned something today for sure.
I'm a huge fan of doing these then and now photo projects. It's a great way to connect with history. Appreciate your voice!

I've never had an Instagram account, I've tried TikTok for a few minutes and hated it, and my Facebook account, which I've had for about 10 years, I rarely use. What I've noticed is that all these platforms want you to do is consume and keep them on their platforms as long as they can. But what's worse is the algorithms they use to impose an opinion on you, whether you realise it, or not. The reason I rarely use Facebook is because I did notice what was trying to be pushed down my throat and I don't like it. These types of platforms are dangerous and really set up echo chambers that take people down negative rabbit holes that turns them antisocial and as Destin says, it changes their voice. UA-cam still has an element of that as well, but there is so much content like what Destin provides to learn and enjoy. His channel is varied, educational and, I believe, comes from a great heart without being hyperbolic or trying to assert an opinion, rather he encourages you to think for yourself, and that's what I like.
Anything owned by Meta(FaceBook) is a bad idea, TikTok sucks, I could write an article on everything I hate about it. But their is more platforms and most of the other ones are not bad, UA-cam is going downhill with stuff like removing the dislike button, but it’s the only good option. I don’t like Twitter because of its community but that’s purely just my opinion. There is a new platform called GETTR that is like Twitter but it’s trying to stop canceled culture instead. Discord and Reddit seem to me like the places to go, Reddit divides itself into countless communities so if you don’t like the community just find a new one. Anyways that’s my 2 cents on these social media platforms,
Tiktok it brain cancer.
Whats really scary is how Facebook promotes conflict because conflict promotes engagement.
You hate tik tok until the algorithms start only showing you exactly what you wanna see.
This is a fascinating insight. Using the architectural analogy is very apt. As an architect this is a surprisingly relevant discussion in the realm of heritage conservation. It is a product of the purely functionalist approach to things that has seemingly subsumed many aspects of contemporary culture. The term “functionalist” is used somewhat abstractly here. The idea that everything should be optimised for its use within the zeitgeist regardless of any latent or intrinsic meaning or intent either imparted or imbued.

When you pulled put the slides I got a bit emotional.
My mom and dad took MAANY slides (and photos and stuff) and they've passed away in the last 10 years. But this year I was told I'm in the late stages of Esophageal Cancer. I won't be alive long and my sister came to stay with me a bit. We were going through slides and pics from mom and dad. Jeremy - can't imagine what you're going through, but I do know the thought of dying brings what's truly important in life to crystal clarity. God is for you. He loves you. You need him - you need forgiveness of sins only He can give. He stands ready to forgive if we admit we've done wrong in our lives and ask for His forgiveness. And his name is Jesus Christ.
I hope my message doesn't offend you - I type this with all sincerity and good will. Jesus has changed my life and forgiven me of my sins - past, present, and future. Shorts are fast food but long form is a home cooked meal. Yes fast food is popular, but it cannot beat moms cooking. It doesn't make you feel good in the long term, that's why I think there will always be a spot for long form videos here on UA-cam. Shorts is just an answer to where the attention market is moving towards, and I am not immune to this. Destin you said you are resisting but are not closed to shorts. I am a noob but I can personally vouch that there is value in converting a long form video into a short. It is like distilling an idea to its purest form, it shows whats important, and is just another tool in content creation.
Accurate comparison! On point.
I like and agree with the food comparison. I hadn't considered that aspect or possibility of using shorts in that way- as sort of a condensed blurb or, perhaps, even as a preview, teaser or trailer for the full length videos, or just quick, fleeting, passing thoughts or observations on the go.
Well said! Absolutely agree!
In some aspects I like to equate shorts to, if you've read or heard of Kantian philosophy, Kantian lower pleasures and long videos to Kantian higher pleasures.
Shorts are like snacks/ junk food, while longer form videos are the main course. Like snacks, shorts are fine in small amounts, but are addictive and unhealthy if they become all you consume, as they are shallow and don't go in depth.
I have been watching you for a few years now, if there was a youtube saint award, you would get one. Khan academy comes to mind to compare to what you are doing. Love your content bro!
I agree with you. Don't sell out! Make videos for you and if viewers don't appreciate it, that's their problem. When the viewers pay you directly a substantial amount, then they can complain. As long as the content is free, viewers should take it or leave it, and since you did not make the content for any specific viewer, the criticism of some random stranger on the internet with entitlement is a serious mental disability. Not all viewers are reasonable and respectful no matter what you do. Make the videos you want to see and nurture the viewers who appreciate your hard work. Everyone else is an unnecessary distraction and their delusional self-entitled and self-important opinions are of no value to you.
Right? Well said!
"the criticism of some random stranger on the internet with entitlement is a serious mental disability. Not all viewers are reasonable and respectful no matter what you do." Are you respectful by saying that? Your opinion feels a little bit like delusional and self-entitled...
@@arnohakk114 Not at all. Politely calling out people being rude, or supporting someone who's being attacked by another with an obvious mental disability isn't “self entitled”, it's just facts. The fact that you feel personally hurt by his comment suggests to me that you owe someone an apology. I'm not rude on the internet unless someone earns it, and even then, I stick to facts, ergo, I'm not the least bit hurt by his comment. I've met people with obvious mental handicaps who are very rude and your hesitation to call it what it is just enables the problem.

Second, the difference is that the people HE (Carey can be both male or female: in this case he's a man) is speaking of habitually devalue others [hard] work, while this person is being critical of their need to unnecessarily and habitually belittle others. If you can't see the difference between the two, there's something wrong with you. They are not the same thing.
Just two days before Notre-Dame burned, I was in Paris on a school trip in Europe where we explored different important places from WW2. I was standing in front of the Notre-Dame but decided not to go in due to long lines and time constraints (this was a school trip after all). I remember after we’d moved on from Paris and were in Belgium, watching on TV as the spire of the cathedral fell, engulfed by the flames. My biggest regret then and now was not taking the time to go inside and see it with my own eyes. It was right there, and though it’ll be rebuilt, I would never be able to see and feel how it once was myself. This video allowed me to at least get some feel for what it was like, and for that I thank you, Destin.
Wow that timing
Hopefully it will be back to it's normal form.. I'm glad I went there a few years ago after living in France and finally got the chance to go inside.. lesson is, try not to miss an opportunity when it's in front of us.
As a photographer and HUGE fan of your content, this is the most insightful video I’ve watched in a long time. As a photographer, I’m not happy with the shift from photography to video shorts on Instagram. I think you have a very important perspective on mental health and the positive data in respect to the UA-cam platform. I hope UA-cam is listening….listening to you.
This was a great video, recreating old photos and especially capturing a moment in time at the cathedral. What a great 24 minutes!
Thank you Destin for this video. You just don't know the impact it had on me: I'm French, I live in Paris, and when Notre Dame went down in flames I had the privilege as a police officer to enter the still smoking cathedral the morning after. Since that day I haven't been back there and avoided watching images of it cause it hurts so much. Therefore, thank you so much for taking me back inside before the disaster !
And yes, your voice counts ! It really does. Thanks for all the learning and discovery on your awesome channel !!!!!!!
Same for me, watching from the USA... My heart was crashing down with the roof. Such a beautiful house of God. I will likely never get to see it in my lifetime, but I felt it as well.
There’s two things I found interesting about this. Firstly, cathedrals like Notre Dame are extraordinarily vast given their age. The people who planned it and laid the foundation stones would never have lived long enough to see it completed. The scale of such buildings is such that there’s constant building maintenance going on. You could say that, from the first stone to this day, builders have never really left.
The second point is that those glass negatives are almost certainly 5 x 4 inches, a format that is still in use today. 5 x 4 and 10 x 8 large format cameras are still used for architectural and studio photography, especially where poster-sized images are required. Even in this digital age, larger formats provide for incredible detail and detect a range of colours that normal cameras can’t.
Remember the Argo...

Absolutely nailed it! UA-cam is a publishing platform. You are a content creator. You earn/"perform" for both yourself and UA-cam. UA-cam exists to profit from your work. It's options are to do so either parasitically (by consuming value from you) or symbiotically (by creating value for you). In reality, this is a spectrum. But the fact remains, the content creator is the host.
No content creator should ever change for their publishing platform, in the same way that no person should ever change for their mosquito.
Smarter Every Day is my doorway to the thinky place.
One of the reasons why I have primarily turned to UA-cam over cable television is of channels like yours where I feel like I can be entertained, but also walk away having really learned something new. Every 6 months or so I do a youtube cleanse and look through my subscriptions and remove subscriptions that interested me in the moment, but are just filler content in the now. Your channel never gets removed. Its very refreshing that you are being blatantly introspective of your content creation. Just do you! That's what your viewers are here for.
UA-cam has the type of videos that cable will never provide. I'd like to try Nebula as it seems to fulfill the role UA-cam has in my life but I try and stay away from subscriptions. Maybe in the future I'll justify it. UA-cam being free also has allowed people to try different things without crazy startup costs and knowhow. If Destiny's only option was to convince a production studio to allow him a TV show we'd never have SED. And if UA-cam devolves into pushing shorts and hiding long-form content then we won't ever get the "next" SED. Who wants to create a long standing educational show on tiktok or Instagram? Nobody. But ads can be shown and data can be tracked. I hope UA-cam pushes back on the idea.

I recently visited Paris and when near Notre Dame, I couldn't help but be moved to tears with the detailed photo gallery of the damage that they had on display. It really is beyond belief that the cathedral is still standing at all. The photos available on the internet don't really do the damage justice. The team working on the cathedral are heroes in every sense of the word. I know we apply that label to a lot of things these days, however, it takes people of heroic courage to have entered and worked on that structure after the amount of damage done.
I personally hope they make it as it was, recognizing that it will be impossible to recreate everything, but as you said, it's really not my say and others get to make that decision.
I appreciate you not catering to an algorithm and actually creating authentic content. Don't ever change. We need more content creators (and people) like you.
Your videos on social media disinformation ... your science videos... all of them. Phenomenal.
As someone who has used most social media platforms, I couldn’t agree more that UA-cam is net positive. I often feel I need to take a break from Instagram and facebook for mental health. UA-cam on the other hand helps me expand my world view and learn. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows here, but it’s the best we got! Thanks for encouraging the company to keep it that way!
To be fair, the length and depth of the Smarter Every Day videos is one of the reasons I love watching them.
I'll always choose a thorough explanation of a subject over a quick snippet of information a la TikTok.
Keep doing great work, Destin.
20:59 - This isn't surprising to me, and it's why YT is still my fave platform after 13 years of use. Even with its changes over the years (most of which I haven't really liked), it's better than any other video/social platform. I have learned *so much,* and I've enjoyed learning it!
@Can Nam"Dog nuts" is too scientific -- explain in layman's terms 😀.
Which video platform is better?
Completely agree with you. It's my favourite as well despite all the obnoxious yet hilarious comments in YT!!!
UA-cam is by far the best platform for educational content along with engaging comments. It's sad to see a whole new generation wasting their precious time and mind watching 10 second long brain-dead TikTok videos all day long with little to no educational value. It's fine for a few minutes of entertainment now and then, but frankly it's just a bunch of BS from what I've seen.
As a content creator myself, I agree, we are loosing who we are, trying to please and compete with an algorithm, leading the next generations to something that doesn’t look good…
The algorithm favors corporate and government propaganda anyway so it's not like they care about independent creators anymore.
I think, he and you are confused about you're not doing something like an artwork that expresses yourselves. You're producing a specific product to a specific market whether or not you're aware of. It's not a Van Gogh painting or leading the next generations. It's a product tailored by demand.
"Content"
@@kozatas Sometimes fabricated demand
The demand does not have to be fabricated. In my opinion, the growth of social networks means, that they hit onto something deeply hidden in the human psyche. It´s very well documented in the Social dilemma movie and dilemma it is. We as a society are moving towards something we don´t understand. Is virtual reality the future of mankind? Is this the answer to the Fermi paradox? Did all aliens before us escape to the VR thus making them unobservable?
This kind of started happening to me on instagram. I noticed that I was trying to tailor things for posts and it just felt like a game of trying to get likes. But the more I thought of it, it was like to what ends? These likes mean nothing to me. Originally started instagram back almost ten years ago was just to share pictures to friends and family with a blurb of text. Now I do all these tags and touching up. Well not anymore. I just started posting again things that I like without trying to get likes and I have to admit, I started feeling better about it all. Like this is me just showing who I really am instead of trying to make a "good" post. It's really reassuring to know that even successful channels like to keep themselves instead of falling to making content per what the platform wants. It's a great pushback.
This is so insightful. Owning your voice is important on youtube. Thanks for making this video!
The funny thing is many other "science" channels have already succumbed to it
Hard to have “your voice”… when YT censors those who step out of line😒
Its important every man
Corporations being able to buy your voice and use it to sell product is the only benefit you get from using the internet in this way. We are all no nobody on the Internet by design. Corporations are trying to change that model so they can profit from it. Not so you can have more voice. The Internet is meant to be "EVERYONEs" voice. Not just the highest paid most commercially viable voices curated to us by the Corporations that for all intents and purposes, own them.
It blows my mind how people as smart as Destin, and the people he regularly associates with, could get the Internet so completely wrong. And fall so easily for corporate "gifts".
@@ZennExile its because he lives in a privilaged bubble and has never been censored or had his content taken down without any reason or recourse like so many others have experienced.
The internet: “let’s get people hyped about digital NFTs!!”
Dustin: “So I bought a bunch of physical slides from the 1960s”
It is telling that one of the biggest media phenomena of the year is Get Back, the Beatles documentary based on a cache of film footage. It is an amazing piece of history, like being inside the group during their final months together. So much of the video and digital era will be lost.

@@mafia5509 47 years old from Russia.
Just last year during the pandemic I took the time to scan and restore my grandfather's slide photos, and he happened to have a whole set of really interesting sights from Paris in 1959 and 1963, as well as other locations around Europe. It was a really fascinating process not only in the technical details of photo digitization and restoration, but also discovering moments and stories from the past that I had never heard about from my grandparents when they were alive. This video conveyed some of that excitement for sure.
The person I have most respect for on youtube is Anton Petrov of What tha math. Never did ads and for the longest time didn't had any merch until ppl kept asking for it he made 1 t-shirt. He keeps it real and proofs you don't need all that garbage or produce Hollywood style vids like most do.
Much respect. You're one of the few with integrity.
Something that Technology Connections demonstrated recently in his videos on photography is, if you put a photo-negative on a dark background and illuminate it from the front, it actually looks like a positive because the silver crystals that make up the image act to reflect the light from the front instead of blocking light coming from the back. (I'm not sure if all negatives like this will be using silver, or if there are other possible elements that could be used on the film, so it might or might not work for the images you have).
this guy is the most wholesome creator on youtube
this video could also be titled 'how to not be a grifter'...so many youtubers, creators, political commentators completely change who they are for their audience, and once I realize they are doing that, all my trust is lost for them.

Thank You so much Destin! Your ideas are beautiful and so is your channel.
As soon as you started talking about images and how they affect our perception, I perked up.
I'm a photographer, majored in photography some 30 years ago, and studied the history of photography then. Its interesting once you note how our perception of events is activated by photography, and yeah, its even more fascinating when you realize how much 'data' was captured in those early glass plates. (Only to be partially lost by the ravages of time)
Just as important is the fact that how we capture images changes what we decide to shoot. 150 years ago, you didn't shoot images of your lunch, because it took too long to set up the shot, you had to coat a plate in order to shoot it, and you had to prioritize what you shoot.
On the other hand, *everyone* is a much better photographer than people were 150 years ago. Not just because of the tools we have, but because we can constantly shoot images and get better. We also shoot more images of each other when we're happy, which affects not only how we see ourselves as a people, but how we feel worse when we're sad... because everyone else 'seems happy'. Right?
Again, talking about images and perception is my thing. Thanks, Destin.
Cool tip: 6:33 if watching on mobile switch your display to invert colors and you’ll see the picture in “color” (it was a black and white photo )
Justin, do not ever bend to the algorithms. Keep true to yourself. I love the amount of effort and energy you put into your videos. I'm an old guy but I've been getting much smarter everyday, thanks to you. Never change.
apparently his name is Destin which as it is nonstandard might be easy to miss ... but i liked your comment =]
This was enjoyable to watch. I've thought about it often when I chat to full time YT friends who I can see are chasing what brings in the clicks, and thus revenue. And it's their livelihood, so I never judge but I can tell they don't always enjoy it as much. I have also not been able to engage with shorts, which tbh I've considered almost a failing on my part as a 'creator'. But I am privileged to have an outside job, and a small enough UA-cam channel to not really feel those pressures in a meaningful way. I can't imagine what it's like to run a channel with millions of subs and several employees. The other reason I liked it was that I've spent a great deal of time in Paris and love it dearly - it's an interesting choice for then & now photos as it's had strict building restrictions in the centre since even before the Belle Époque. A thoughful introspective vid :)
So basically you can't just enjoy the vid without bringing attention to yourself. UA-camrs like you are ruining the algorithm.
This has nothing to do with the content of the video, but how do you feel about the large amount of sponsorships/ads on UA-cam that are arguably deceptive? (VPN services claiming to protect you from hackers, crypto/stock market dealers of dubious repute etc.)?
Thanks Rohin. Yeah, that pressure you feel to use shorts is what I'm trying to articulate here. My goal was to make something constructive in hopes that one or two important folks inside UA-cam would see it. That being said, I acknowledge that they are running a business, and ultimately businesses are run by money. My goal in this video was to try to encourage them to leave some of the money on the table in favor of keeping the essence of what's special about UA-cam. I feel that TikTok is a dumpster fire, and I've seen it do far more damage to those around me than good. A video like this could not exist on TikTok, Instagram Reels, or even Facebook for that matter.
@@smartereveryday love your videos ❤️
Walking good youtube videos is like a normal functioning heart, it actually pumps information efficiently.
Shorts for youtube is like a heart with ventricular fibrillation, shorts just twitches the brain but doesn't pump anything.
I love how this entire video Destin is talking about staying true to who you are while playing music by someone who composed for a game about staying true to who you are that helped me rediscover my voice to stay true to who I am.
Layers, people. Layers.
With those acoustics in Notre Dame, imagine how absolutely crazy the fire might have sounded before it destroyed the ceiling.
You get it man, now you know why I started it. the sound!
I have been hitting that same wall on whether to follow my own voice or chase what the platforms want. UA-cam should be fun and I want to keep it that way. Thank you for putting this out as I felt it was less a choice and more a necessity. Make what you love!
I could agree more!
Never expected to see argo here but anyway
Hear hear!
Nice to see a fellow Brony.
and the thing is, there always the chance that both will go hand in hand at some point. Algorithm will sometimes just choose a video to popularize, could be yours next
It's so great to hear there are still people who stay true to themselves. I wish others could think like you, especially youtube. Honestly I've been a YT Premium user for a few years now, and with the way they are heading, (as in removing the dislike button and blasting these shorts), I'm not sure I want to keep paying them for something I'm starting to dislike... removing that dislike button seems like a political move, and its taking away the natural right of humans to have an opinion and voice that opinion. I really hope YT will reconsider what they're doing before they ruin their platform, atleast in my eyes.
Same here.
I just cancelled my YT Premium today. I'll be taking advantage of other platforms as much as possible now. The removal of the dislike count/ratio is pivotal in more rapidly identifying misleading content. The change is going to make YT a haven for misinformation, completely undermining all of the fact-checking efforts they have done in recent years. YT just destroyed credibility and accountability on the platform. I did not sign up for that. I'm out.
I wrote to their feedback "i won't pay subscription for removing dislike counter" and did stop paying after they done it.
It's the only way to actually vote, and i hope they will feel something.
@@andrewpotapenkoff7723 Same here. Precisely what I did, too.
I actually feel the opposite about the dislike button and my thoughts go back years before it became a political issue. My contention is that if I dislike a video I simply move on to another one. The content creator will see that in their analytics. Maybe it is just a generational thing, (I'm old) but It just seems unnecessary and cruel to tell someone that you disliked their effort.
Thank you Destin, for being such a positive voice (and your own voice) on UA-cam. Keep forging your own path and telling your story, and experience.
Love the Paris photos, and the physical media so cool to see!
“Gly”: Absolutely brilliant video! As a creator myself I’ve struggled with this very same issue. Thanks for bringing it to light. Take care.
Whats a "gly"?

We're proud of you Destin, glad to hear you're staying true to yourself.
Keep being curious for us & God Bless you and your family!
I was part of a choir that sang the Ave Maria in that cathedral and the acoustics and experience were amazing. No mics, no speakers, just the reverberation of our voices into an otherwise fairly dark space.
The walkthrough brought me right back to walking into that cathedral and the shift into a darker, hushed yet cavernous space.
I find it really interesting that longer content performs better for you. From what I have heard from others, their content generally performs better at somewhat shorter lengths (say, maybe 10 mins or so). So there is something about the way that you present and format your content that keeps it interesting for longer videos rather than dragging on! Keep up the good work!
UA-cam has been prioritizing watch length for a few years, due both to changing watch habits and also some shady demographic outreach (young children are much less likely to move off).
@@artstsym i would have thought the opposite, im 26 and my 19 year old brother watches allot more shorter content and less science stuff.
Well, when I say watch habits, I don't just mean who you're subscribed to, but literally the habits of how we watch. A lot of people use it in the same way as podcasts, "watching" low visual engagement videos while doing some other activity. Basically, normal UA-cam is skewing towards long, and for the groups whose ideal watch length is lowering they've been halfheartedly chasing the TikTok model with stories.
10 minutes is still really long in a world of TikToks, instagrams, and shorts
@@artstsym I knew that watch length was important, but I was thinking more in terms of proportionally to the whole video
I hate video need to be longer to get more views, as I want to give good review and tutorials that are straight to the point, instead of annoying long tutorials with a lot of fluff to just make it longer to fit the algorithm. I hate youtube made it like this and its killing my channel with short vids as I dont want to make long 10min vids if I dont need to.
Very fair point, this is something animators bring up often as well. Long watchtime is not great for detailed animation. Wonder how often these alghoritm changes in YT will happen.
Indeed, the length of a video should be defined by how long it needs to be to convey the content or message in a meaningful, how long the editor wants it to be for people to being able to more easily follow and by what the person making the video fells like it should be.
Didn't this change already? I heard let's plays, which are usually pretty long videos, are getting promoted less according to their creators. I guess 8min is the length yt wants these days...
Destin: don't lose your voice.
UA-cam: active noise cancellation is on.
whoa. I was sitting here like “wow these comparisons of modern Paris and past Paris are super cool!” And then as you were transitioning from that, the entire weight of the message around maintaining identity hit and I just started sobbing (I am emotional but not much of a crier). I haven’t started watching the rest yet but thank you for sending such a compelling and important message 🥲
Same feels
We'll always have Paris.
Love your voice Destin!
On top of this, I want to add the recent move by UA-cam in making the like/dislike buttons irrelevant.
This has been a terrible move, which will open the doors to click bait videos, bad content overall which we could just skip looking at the like/dislike ration.
As I'm pretty sure UA-cam uses the likes as a key element for their "algorithm", I'm now protesting to make it irrelevant for them as well by not liking or disliking anything anymore.
Unfortunately this might hurt some of the creators I follow in the short term, but hopefully if more people do it, we might get our voice back as a viewer.
Well put. Perhaps we can shift to just commenting "like" or "dislike" for a bit.
@@isaacislaughter or have people makes comments with people saying "like my comment if you disagree" either way works
Aaand this is the point where I'm not just subscribed but also enabled all notifications. I like when a content creator stops/reduces clickbait and focuses on doing quality content without really caring about playing the algorithm.
One of my favourite things about the comparisons is seeing how trees have been moved or how much they have grown in the years since the original had changed.
I was in Paris last week with my daughter who goes to school there. My dad studied there in 1954. And he often would sketch underneath a willow tree at the down stream and of Ile St Louis at Pont Neuf. it’s probably not the same tree but it’s a willow. You know you’re in an old city when the buildings that are constantly being reconstructed far outlast the trees.
I've had immense respect for you for years, Destin, and it has only grown in hearing your thoughts around maintaining your channel's identity and on your plans in the face of platform pressures. Thank you for doing what you do and how you do it.
Also, all of France groaned when you tried to pronounce Arc de Triomphe 😂.

I appreciate the long format videos. Maybe because I'm closer to 40 now than 20, but I absolutely love learning along with you on these. Keep up the good work.
Always have, and always will, love that I can watch every second of every Smarter Every Day video because there is absolutely no filler. Wish more creators were like that.
I agree to the sentiments of not losing your voice. My content is very specific and has its niche, and I up right refuse to change the format based on the algorithm. I'd rather remain true to myself and continue to make content exactly as I intended with no tweaks to appease the neon god 😁. If it gets views, it gets views. If it doesn't, it doesn't.
Ultimately it goes back to "How much can a person be paid to work to someone else's time or constraints?"
There's a significant amount of passion that the UA-cam algorithm constantly misses because it cannot recognize human emotion and how it attracts us to certain content. Stay true to yourself and your base and keep pumping out great content like you do. Just a little Truth and Reconciliation for you :]
I'm actually so happy I watched this video and that you commented on it. I've been looking for a halo UA-camr to watch, I haven't been in touch with the game and lore since reach came out so I can't wait to watch your stuff!

I love the fact that you exist Destin. You're such a nice, positive and rational weekly reminder that not all the people are bad or dull and that we can fight for important things in this world. You're doing great job and make internet a bit better. Keep it up man :)
It's a shame UA-cam comments are always gonna be full of people that missed all that somehow.
Fascinating and a little initially depressing to see all these sights swarming with people where they were not so much 100 years ago. I wonder if that is down to population growth of the shrinking globe brought about by cheaper air travel. Then I see your bit about actually experiencing these places in the flesh, and I realise that yes, they may not look as pristine, and spacious, but they were built to be enjoyed in person, not simply seen in photographs, and I realise that even though they are disfigured by the swarms of people, the democratisation of international tourism has enabled these places to be enjoyed as they were designed to be enjoyed.
This is the kind of content that keeps UA-cam ahead of other brain candy platforms who don't respect your attention. Thank you Destin and it was lovely seeing Matthieu join you
Wow! The way you narrated your point, explained with a lot of detail by drawing a parallel and alluding to the things that are going in a wrong direction in the social world is just amazing! I have never seen anyone explain or draw parallels to any subject better than this.
Great video! Loved it! Hopefully, YT will listen more to what you have to say regarding the topic and hope that you have struck a chord of integrity, responsibility in at least a few people at YT. It definitely got me thinking and reconsider what to entertain, give attention to and what not to. Amazing!
Keep the great videos coming!
I found this video extremely emotion evoking. Thank you for making this. Thank you for challenging me to capture humanity with my photography. Please keep up the fantastic work, Destin. I greatly appreciate what you're doing.
I'm SOOOO HAPPY! I was able to go to Paris before the Notre Dame fire and was able to see it inside and out. One of the best parts was feeding pigeons outside the cathedral with my wife. It really is a special place of European culture and history and it should absolutely be preserved as close to original as possible.
I think there are a few places where they actually managed to find the right balance between "keep it as original as possible", which in my opinion should be the first goal for such a historic building, and on the other hand, put in whatever is needed to acomodate large numbers of visitors.
And to be fair, some change (minor ones) is ok. It is not like nothing ever changed in the 900 years before based on needs and new technology (I guess the building initially had nothing prepared to put in electric wires etc., lights, heating, whatever)
Always love the content you produce. Over Thanksgiving weekend my family pulled out the old slide projector and looked at photos from my dad's childhood in the '60s and some from my early childhood in the late '90s/early 2000nds. There is so much nostalgia for me that comes from the sound of the projector, but I also noticed that it isn't about how high res the images are, or about having razor sharp focus, it's just about the memories and the people who were there. I recently got back into film photography, and am also thinking about shooting slides as well now. It was serendipitous that you released this episode when you did. Keep up the great work!

For UA-cam, leaving Shorts aside, I think that they've removed two great things that they already had before:
1) Accessibility through community-submitted closed captioning (yes if you're a fairly well-off UA-cam channel you should ideally provide your own but closed captioning in itself isn't a universal thing, some culture prefers hard caption);
2) The ability to make your own informed decision by making public reactions public, even if it doesn't guarantee to be interpreted exactly as it says on the bottle.
As for keeping buildings or statues or monuments or even cityscapes and just landscape in general I'll say that I think it depends on what they means to everyone, even though it's often sad that the ones who have the last say will always be those with enough power either material or immaterial. We've changed through so many "optimistic" and "pessimistic" phases in the course of humanity, and I think that the real question will always be the one of how to make sure that it can be sustained further forward or not, each solution with their own ups and downs and trade-offs.
Thank-you. For going against the flow. For staying human. For being real. I appreciate your channel for what it is, not for what YT wants it to become.
Destin, thank you for using your voice on UA-cam to remind us to stay true to ourselves. Over the years, UA-cam has been my go to resource for learning new things and I often go deep down the rabbit hole and I’ve learned so many wonderful things that I never even knew I needed to know. That’s how I discovered your channel in the first place and my life is better for it.
It’s still possible to use shorts for good content and even educational content, but most of them are just mindless meanderings that steal away our time and give nothing in return. I agree 100%.
It’s amazing to see how things look almost more vast and larger in the older pictures. Strange how less business makes these structures seem more magnificent and not lost to the noise.
The thing with slides, negatives, and images is that they're tangible and can be put on display in the real world. Gives it more life than just being another image on a screen in a folder in a hard drive somewhere occupying 1's and 0's.
The thing with "images on a screen in a folder in a hard drive somewhere occupying 1's and 0's" is that they can be printed out and also put on display in the real world.
3:50 As someone who lives in a 1500y old city, and as an architect myself, I can say we have a very different perspective on this for most historical buildings. Because we have to...
Thing is our cities are so old that if we didn't renovate and update them, they'd simply die. Although I do agree that a monument like the Notre dame should be kept as original and intact as possible, this just isn't possible or plausible or viable for many other buildings. There's just too many. If we kept and maintained every historical building in its original form, our cities would turn into dead museums full of empty, lifeless, well preserved shells.
Old buildings need to be renovated to give them new life, so they can be used and maintained for another 1000y. These buildings often were built to last, but they were also built to be used. So it makes sense to keep them as intact as possible, but to also update them, keep them in use, and keep them alive for generations to come.
Great example of this can even be found with monuments, like for example the Louvre in Parijs. It was updated/upgraded to handle more tourists and visitors, to keep the museum alive, but also to maintain it as it is by adding another modern entrance. And this is the now famous glass pyramid of the Louvre. The Louvre had been there for centuries. Many protested the construction of the pyramid. But it allowed the Louvre to continue into the 21st century, and it has become so iconic and so part of the Louvre now, now no-one can even imagine the Louvre without it anymore.
And thing is, this had been done for centuries. For example many buildings have a Mish mash of styles because over the centuries things were added, renovated, and so on. This is as old a practice as architecture is. In my own city we have a city hall partially built in gothic style and partially built in renaissance. Because by the time they got to that renaissance wing, the style and fashion had changed. The cathedral is gothic, but it's interior is baroque because it was refurbished during the contra-reformation. There's a gothic style guild building with a 90s glass addition built right into it, and now it's modern office space. And so on, and so on. If notre dame had burnt down 200-300y ago, they would most probably have reconstructed it with a new "modern" baroque or classisist roof, or even would have completely renovated or rebuilt it in these new, then "modern" styles.
Even if some changes are made to Notre dame, it will probably be done with lots of respect and care, and it too will probably allow the cathedral to survive another couple of centuries. That's just how it goes.
But as always, Interesting and thought provoking video though!
Content creators could stop UA-cam's nonsense if the biggest creators banded together and did something.....but they don't. They are happy squishing everyone out.
Lol all they would do is shadow ban them
They do - nebula
They don't realise that it's being done to squeeze them out and bring in corporate entities to fill their space.
You’re ill-informed. Yt is owned by google. They have all the revenue they could ever hope for. Some ad sense percentage is trivial to such a huge entity.
Don't bite the hand that's feeding you
*You are so right about this, thank you for taking a step to make a video about it... I feel that youtube following pursuit to make its platform more about entertainment is making it lose its educational value, UA-cam got to do something about it...*
They did, they removed the dislike count so now you cant tell which tutorials are good and which are just crappy clickbait videos. Well done youtube!
Usually the solution is to do less about it, really. Just let the community discover its own way.
It’s about time that we as the consumer take a step and remove our dependency on one platform. If more and more creators tries to shift to another platform, we the consumers will shift too.
Goodbye UA-cam. You are short lived if you keep making such decisions.
It's not that UA-cam is going towards entertainment. They are trying to become the next form of television. They are favouring the mainstream media and entertainment companies over small producers. And they curate educational content such that it doesn't cover any topic they deem to be unacceptable, even if the video is purely factual in nature. And I don't think UA-cam will change. This is a conscious decision.
@@CristiNeagu you can just not watch the mass media. Hit "don't recommend this channel" when it shows up in your feed. They can only gain views of people watch them... So maybe someone does enjoy their content.
If UA-cam can cater to different folks, that's fine.
You're doing an amazing thing Destin, never stop being you.
So glad for Destin's self awareness and self analysis to know when adapting to an environment is not necessarily a good thing.
sometimes adapting involves....pushing back....as a collective....before it's too late.
