46:28 - I love this question, but mostly because of her answer. She’s not bitter that people are out there hooking the turtles. She’s happy that they’re working together to fix the accident. Her perspective is beautiful. ❤️
Yeah this was great. Many people that haven't fished or hunted don't understand it and have such a negative view of it but the truth is hunters/fishers are often the first ones to realize when something is wrong in an ecosystem. They spend all their time in it and they are connected to the environment. There are definitely exceptions but 99% of the fishers I've come across are genuinely kind, knowledgeable and really care about the animals they catch. Looking from the outside in I can understand why people have a negative view but after spending time around these people you learn how much they know about the outdoors and how much they want to conserve it.
This brought a few tears to my eyes. Thank you Destin. My family have been involved in squamatid conservation for generations, from my grandmother who participated in sea turtle conservation in the Gulf, to me who helped countless Box Terrapins to cross the road safely.

"this is gonna be less of a me giving you the knowledge about Sea Turtles, because I don't have the knowledge" This is one of the reasons I really enjoy your channel, Destin. You have been researching sea turtles for over a year and will have gained a lot of information about them. But instead of trying to regurgitate what you learned, you simply state that you don't know as much as the experts do, so listen to them. You are not trying to make this all about you, but about the sharing of knowledge and I applaud you for that
Since this is sponsored by DJI, I have to add something as a Mavic Mini owner myself: Great drone for the price and size. However: It is VERY sensitive to signal interference. I recommend having direct line of sight at all times. I had many "automatic return to home" situations because the drone lost contact to the controller. I previously had a Mavic Pro (first generation) and it was way more robust in that regard. And: beautiful video, really enjoyed watching it!
The little girl near the end during Kale's nap.."He's just so adorable.." Right in the feels! The most precious thing I'll see all decade, and it's only 2020. Thank you Destin, keep up the good work, looking forward to that next video. By the way, did the DoD ever get around to clearing the second part of that video surrounding military operations in Alaska?
I know, I kept thinking well if you going to have a pot calling a kettle black, that's the way I want it-- an adorable human calling an adorable sea turtle "so cute"

Destin - I think this is my favorite channel in all of YT. I love learning new things, even at 57, and I've learned something new today from this video. And sea turtles are now my favorite marine animal. Thank you for helping me become smarter every day. P.S. is that a binary clock (or some kind of binary counter) on the wall behind you over your left shoulder? I have one but it isn't configured quite like that. Just curious. I put off watching this for a while, I have heard so many people talk about sea turtles it seems like there's not much else left to talk about. Here is something totally unique, a genuinely beautiful story, a journey for you and for the turtle. I love all aquatic life, but you did a fine job of making me care about Kale.

“Turtles like to heal slowly.” Does that mean turtles have the ability to heal fast, but choose to heal slowly? Hahah Great video Destin and glad to see you in Mobile!
Healing fast needs a lot of recources aka food transformed into energy. The slower you heal, the less energy it takes per day, the less you have to eat additionally. And as they are no hunters, there is no need for fast healing.
48:50 Question, do you think it has something to do with the direction of moment rather then getting comfortable? maybe he got motion sickness when he was traveling in 90 degree to the direction of the car.
Dang, you could totally be right about that. The other thing that came to mind is with his/her fistula being on the underside of his/her chin/neck, maybe it's more comfortable to stretch out that skin with the head pointing up like that.
@@mrnine324 I was thinking it might to BLOCK the fistula by pressing it against the plastic, which normally being under water wouldn't be an issue, but in the air, the turtle's insides would be prone to drying out faster....
After the third rotation I thought the same thing. I tested it by turning Kale’s crate 90 degrees. Same thing.. rotated to align sideways to the box, chin up. My conclusion was that something about chin up was more comfortable to Kale.
That’s a great point! Considering sea turtles are basically natures GPS units. They somehow know the coordinates to the exact spot within feet of where they were born. When the car hit highway speeds I wouldn’t be surprised if it did feel weird to the poor lil guy/girl.
@@timesfly1081 Read Destins response right above your comment. He practically "disproved" the motion theory. It seems to really be about comfort, or the fistula.
The longest video on UA-cam that I have watched INTENTLY, and with ADMIRATION for all that you did to make this as informative as possible. I really appreciate that you took time to make this one, and that you are slowly getting involved in the world of conservation. Thank you Destin. May you be blessed a thousand fold for all the work that you do in spreading information and positivity.
I have four amateur theories in regards to Kale's preference for that seemingly uncomfortable position in its transportation bucket. 1. The position allowed Kale to see more than just the grey walls of the bucket, which might feel less threatening. A year rehabilitating in a tank may have taught Kale that the only way out is up, when, in the open water, the way out is in any direction it chooses. 2. Frequent treatments of the fistula may have desensitized Kale to that position, or maybe created a survival instinct within Kale that associated that position with positive outcomes. 3. Lying flat to the bottom with no water buoyancy could be an irritant to the fistula or internal scar tissue and that position could take pressure off the injury. 4. The forces from acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle might be reminiscent of waves and it might prefer aligning its anteroposterior(?) axis accordingly. A 90° turn of the bucket could test this theory. Destin, thank you. This was an extraordinarily insightful video and I must admit you've piqued my interest more than I thought a video on turtles could. Of course, the same could be said for trimming line... and pulleys... and backwards bicycles...
MWAHAHAHA!!! I only realized the video was an hour long because of your comment, I even scrolled back up to double check! Same here, it felt like 15 or 20mns!
This video gave me all the feels - parts almost had me in tears, and others made me smile. So glad Kale got a home where he can be safe, happy and looked after!
Destin. Old(er) Canadian guy here. I want to thank you for your work. My children have learned so much from you that I find it stunning. This video on Sea Turtles is joyous. Keep it up lad. What I see in you is an optimal balance of science and humanity. Keep it up!
My first thought at around 7:00 when the biologist was explaining how she was removing the last few remaining turtles from the nest was something along the lines of; "Wouldn't that be weakening the collective gene pool by allowing the babies that would have died naturally to survive?" I was very relieved to see that there was a crude (but at least existent) litmus test of sorts to determine the viability of these animals. You have this knack for making people ask questions about the subject matter you are trying to teach and leading them to the answers they're seeking, this is the mark of an excellent teacher. Your videos are incredibly well structured and you did in fact make me feel all the things.
I had the same thought. I also wonder what happens to the ones that choose to never go to the ocean. Do they die on their own? Are they cared for by humans for the rest of their lives?
@@skull1161 Yes, I think so too. The evolution through natural selection is a very slow process and it will not harm the gene pool to get the maximum of baby turtles to hatch and go to sea. If the conservation effort succeeds and the population stabilizes, the evolution will continue to do its job.
It would also depend whether the ones who would have died naturally are any genetically weaker or just ended up lower in the nest or were in a smaller egg with less protein.
I have seen many videos that I learn lots from. I have seen many videos that make me emotional. Seldom have I seen a video that accomplishes both of those to the degree that this video does. The entire time, I was holding back tears - of joy for the individual animals with good outcomes in the video and of sadness for so many of their brethren that suffer in the wild due to human activities and inaction. Although I never saw a sea turtle in the wild, I have always loved these gentle creatures. But after this video, I truly feel a deep connection with them. Kudos Destin! This is how we inspire future generations to do better than ours did. Amazing work.

This is amazing. They're everywhere so you can all help out. 46:28 - I love this question, but mostly because of her answer. She’s not bitter that people are out there hooking the turtles. She’s happy that they’re working together to fix the accident. Her perspective is beautiful. ❤️
She's very positive, but she seems to be ignoring the fact that people are out there harming innocent turtles and fish constantly. Fishing is cruel.

"this is gonna be less of a me giving you the knowledge about Sea Turtles, because I don't have the knowledge"
This is one of the reasons I really enjoy your channel, Destin.

“Turtles like to heal slowly.”
Does that mean turtles have the ability to heal fast, but choose to heal slowly? Hahah
Great video Destin and glad to see you in Mobile!
They didn't choose that life, but they do enjoy it.
Healing fast needs a lot of recources aka food transformed into energy. The slower you heal, the less energy it takes per day, the less you have to eat additionally. And as they are no hunters, there is no need for fast healing.
@@Seelenschmiede what about bull sharks
@@orix3434 they are idiots and eat nearly everything. Or try to eat it.
Dude, that's smart.
This is not an amateur opinion
Might be 3 options, considering Destin--from what I gathered from other comments, already tried to move the box.

one of the most deserved likes ive given in my entire life... keep doing this videos destin, they are as amazing as you are... greetings from Spain
But wouldn't it be better to help the weaker ones anyways? The species is endangered.
@@skull1161 Yes, I think so too. The evolution through natural selection is a very slow process and it will not harm the gene pool to get the maximum of baby turtles to hatch and go to sea. If the conservation effort succeeds and the population stabilizes, the evolution will continue to do its job.
@@illwriteamemo32 I dont know for sure, but it sounds like a good source of turtles for zoos/aquariums
It would also depend whether the ones who would have died naturally are any genetically weaker or just ended up lower in the nest or were in a smaller egg with less protein.

Saw your tweet. I liked this video very much thanks for making it.

That sea turtle is gonna tell his friends he was abducted by aliens who did weird experiments on him
I have seen many videos that I learn lots from.
