You can't be older than 30 and NOT know who hootie and the blowfish we're....dudes dominated the mid 90s...."let her cry" is a MUST!!! And they're basically alt rock/pop
They hated being told the direction of the music by the label, so they waited their contract out so they could do what they wanted: and Dauris Rucker country was born.
Darius Rucker actually played a couple of different genres after Hootie and the Blowfish broke up. I think one genre was reggae, don't remember what else. Then he got into country music. He's one of the best country artists out there now.
Huge Darius' Rucker fan here, whether Hootie & The Blowfish or as a Country artist. His voice is so distinctive to me, I believe he'd master any genre of music....👍
Though Darius is a solo country artist, he still does shows and tours with H&tBF. So he's straddling the line and breaking down walls, in rock and country, for Black artists.
i took my son to their concert when he was 14 he's now 40 we had the best time ever...i hear their songs and i remember that night ... we rocked and he wasn't even embarrassed to be seen with mom that night
I was a massive fan when they were huge back in the 90s. I was a bartender and we played a lot of Hootie and the Blowfish..and it never hurt that Darius was easy on the eyes and his magnificent voice!!
That's Darius Rucker. He's FANTASTIC! Check out "Let Her Cry" from when he was still with the group. As a solo artist he sings "If I Told You" and "Wagon Wheel". Great songs!
The band members were friends at the University of South Carolina and they had a couple of other mutual friends, one whose nickname was Hootie and another called The Blowfish. They probably should have anticipated that EVERYONE would dub Darius as Hootie and the rest as The Blowfish. 😂
I still remember seeing Hootie & the Blowfish in concert- my senior year of high school they were playing a small college town nearby (around 1994/95). They were so much fun! "Time" is definitely my favorite of theirs...
Many years ago I went to go and See Hootie and the Blow Fish for the first time live in a small theater of about 2000 people. And it was Hootie that opened for my cousin who had a brief following along the west coast. It was a crazy awesome concert. very cool band.
Since we’re listening to Hootie, I’d love to see you do some Matchbox 20! Another great band around the same time. 3am, Push, Unwell, Real World or even Smooth that he did with Santana is a great one!
I dusted off this ol record and listened to its entirety. It’s so rich. Darius went to high school in Charleston and met his band mates in college. The lyrics in Going Home and Not Even The Trees are, in part, about his late mother. When he says, “you laugh at me, when I run…” he’s picturing his momma watching him as a child. He’s talking to God when he says, “You came down here, and you took her too soon.” He must’ve really loved his mom.
I loved Darius Rucker's evocative and sensitive voice, back during the "Hootie and the Blowfish" period through his solo career. His voice and emotional expression always takes center stage when I hear him.
As a genX kid, this would have been what we called "alternative rock". He's doing country music now, but he's always been a great storyteller and his voice puts you right into whatever mood he wants you to be in for each of his songs.
Darius Rucker. One of the most talented musicians. He's stood the test of time. Was good in this band, made the transition to country... Still Killin it. 🔥🔥🔥
Hootie & The Blowfish were huge on the college scene in the southeast in the early 90's prior to hitting it it big....I saw them many times live in small college bars. Just awesome, brings back so many great memories.
I played this song on drums for my 5th grade talent show. My first time ever playing in front of people. Even though it's not what I normally listen to, I will always have a special place in my heart for this song.
You know what I enjoy about this song...you can sing along, his voice is awesome but greater than all that is that it's just a clean song with wholesome lyrics for a change.
Hootie & the Blowfish was considered Pop or Alternative for the most part. Darius Rucker always had a unique sound. Check him out in this episode of "Live from Daryl's House" ua-cam.com/video/5yoPVN9cxBo/v-deo.html
Love that show.. and I have revisited the episode you mention several times.. its unique in that its at Darius' house in S. Carolina and not Daryl's.. I also love the episode with Daughtry
I'm not a country fan but I LOVED Hootie and the Blowfish....my CD was blasting in the car. My favorite on the CD was Only Want to be With You. To me they were pop as far as a category.
Actually, Darius Rucker (lead singer) isn't 'Hootie', and other band members are not 'the Blowfish' (i.e., plural 'fish'). The name is from their University of South Carolina college days, where Rucker had two friends with those nicknames, one resembling an owl with his round glasses, the other resembling one of those fish that puff up. One evening when these two guys walked into a party, Rucker shouted and announced, "Look, it's Hootie and the Blowfish!" Later when they were picking a band name, 'Hootie and the Blowfish (i.e., singular, the fish-resembling guy) came up, and stuck. So _he_ is Darius Rucker, not Hootie, and collectively they are _all_ 'Hootie and the Blowfish'. Now, having said all that, Hootie sure can sing, can't he? 😎
Caught them in my early 20's when I was hanging out on campus at Auburn university, they were known as a college campus band from South Carolina I believe but they were great, and his country songs are great too,
I`ve seen countless bands live and getting to see these guys live in Manchester UK in 1998 was something else all together..."Let Her Cry" is still on my top ten best tracks of the 90`s...
Darius Rucker is from Charleston SC, attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia SC. He started his band Hootie & the Blowfish while at USC, playing at college frat parties etc , college bars around SC . Darius is a very highly regarded in SC, also known and appreciated for his generosity and support for the underprivileged
The drummer you saw in the video left the band after graduating college to pursue music ministry. A big applaud to all those who follow their heart. His name is Brantley Smith. He has made guest appearances with the band over the years.
Y’all should of played it. Had good times during this era. Saw them live and they were awesome. Might of been floating a little and a little intoxicated but it was absolutely amazing!
Hootie and the Blowfish. They were a college band in Columbia SC . The played bars down the 5 points area . Very trendy to the college crowd at the university of South Carolina . I was stationed there when they were to hit it big . Funny note after I got out of the army I stayed in Columbia and got a civilian job . We had some little fun softball team . We were supposed to face this other team named “ hootie and the blowfish “ we were like what? They were already well on their way to mtv stardom etc.. Darius Rucker sings country now . Love your channel VAN!!
I had the pleasure of seeing Hootie and the Blowfish perform at our college bar about 2 weeks before this song EXPLODED on the radio. We hung out with these guys for several hours drinking beer and shooting the shit (me and about 30 other people, lol) These guys were extremely humble, nice, funny as hell and an absolute joy to be around. I will always be a fan of these guys.
If you heard Hootie and the Blowfish in the early years, you knew they started out as a band who played at a lot of college parties. They were tight, loud, and faster than their records. A great, fun band! Yes, Darius Rucker eventually started doing country. I think that was part of his roots. You’re right about a lot of black people listening to country, back in my day anyway. This song was part of my kids’ generation, but I loved Hootie and the BF, too. Heard them in concert, too.
As some others have mentioned...........they formed the band when they were in college at UofSC in Columbia, SC (the middle part of the state). I live in upstate SC and can remember years ago when Hootie & the Blowfish were up & coming, someone at Belk (one of the big department stores at the mall here) was giving away H&tB CDs. It's been so long that I can't remember but I'm pretty sure it was like a demo CD with just a few songs or samplings of songs. I had some friends that went to UofSC so I'd heard them talk about H&tB but hadn't heard their music until I got that CD at Belk. My friends and I loved it but we never thought they'd reach the level of success that they did. Whether with H&tB or just him by himself, Darius Rucker is still one of my favorite singers. You should check out 'If I Told You' by Darius Rucker.
Hootie and the Blowfish was one of the Wife and I's favorite groups back in the day. They started out as a college band and they hit the big time. Still love em.
So proud that they're from my state. South Carolina (hence the official southern "drawl") I think at the time they may have been alternative rock (I'm terrible with genre because it all mixes so much). lead singer Darius Rucker does country now. He's amazing. Such a smooth voice. Extremely kind people too.
Probably one of a few that made the transition to something else and succeed in what they did, always doing what you're doing, keep it simple and you will succeed, thanks
Somehow, I missed that you did this and I'm going to enjoy it now with my morning coffee, you barely see reactions to them and Darius also, on his own. ♥️Ya
I love how Hootie/Darius reinvented himself after the blowfish swam out to sea! I love his voice in both genres. You would probably like “Wagon Wheel” by the same guy with his actual name, Darius Rucker. It would make a great comparison after doing this. 🌺✌️
Gah talk about living in the 90s in South Carolina when they were at their height! You couldn't turn a radio station on without them playing these guys. They were the definition of a college band considering they were at the University of South Carolina.
This is a special song for me from my ex husband that died in an accident with my daughter driving and my son that followed him through the windshield! He saved his life!
Hootie and the Blowfish was a college band, centered around Columbia, SC (Univ of SC) early in Darius Rucker's career. So in SC (where I am from) they had a following among a certain age group. We heard them a LOT in places like Myrtle Beach (where I am from), Charleston, etc. They toured around other college towns. Then they hit a bit album - think it was named something with "Rearview" in it, and got famous more largely. This song and a couple others. Anyways, he said in interviews that his sound comes from the woman who raised him, his Grandmother, I think???? He said she LOVED Glen Campbell and he grew up listening to Glen Campbell, (and other country music) playing in her house, and that influenced his sound a lot. So he is a Country singer now. Love his voice, very distinctive.
I can't believe it. You are the first person I've seen that was honest enough to admit to disliking a song! I love Hootie and the Blowfish, but the courage you showed in your admition is what made me subscribe to your channel. Kudos to you.
They were part of the 90’s scene, maybe it where in from but everyone played Hootie here and now rock his Country songs. I love his Old Crow Medicine Show Cover.... Wagon Wheel. It honestly got bigger than the original. Most people think it’s his song.
Yo, I like every one of these video's you made, you pick the great songs I like. Keep up the Great Job !!! Secretly propbley the OG"s listen to these and go ... man I remember those days.
Lead singer is named Darius Rucker. He has had a solo career as I country artist, but I always liked the band Hootie and the Blowfish; they were definitely considered rock back in the 1990s.
Hootie and the Blowfish have a video called Only Wanna Be With You and my son (who is now 36,lol) loved it! We collected sports cards together and he was in love with the Charlotte Hornets(we are from North Carolina) and Alonzo Mourning was his favorite player at the time and it shows him and Dan Marino and other sports figures throughout the video,oh and the songs great too,lol..Keep On Rockin'
They're actually alternative rock. Listen to Let Her Cry beautiful raspy voice. And the singer Darius Rucker several years ago start a career in country music.
After the success of Hootie and the Blowfish (HTB) Darius Rucker cut a few country albums that are actually quite good. Saw him live in Virginia Beach a few years back when he was promoting his country records, of course he also mixed in his HTB hits which made it even better.... kind of like getting two deserts after dinner! DR was great live, got a helluva country voice. DR reformed with HTB in 2019 and released a new record entitled Imperfect Circle. His 1994 debut record Cracked Rear View was certified platinum 21 times. A HUGE TALENT!! Great reaction, TY.
You can't be older than 30 and NOT know who hootie and the blowfish we're....dudes dominated the mid 90s...."let her cry" is a MUST!!! And they're basically alt rock/pop
He should have started with "Let her Cry" that was the best! Hootie and the Blowfish were definitely big during the alternative music phase
Definitely didn't dominate, but very well known.
PERFECT ALBUM SIDE 👍👍
I concur. Let Her Cry is a must.
my hubby seems to have not known of them. He's heard a song or two of theirs without knowing the band name apparently...? and he's 38 this year.
I always though Hootie & Blowfish were pop (rock). Darius Rucker is now country. I LOVE his voice 💕he has such an amazing unique lovely voice!
They hated being told the direction of the music by the label, so they waited their contract out so they could do what they wanted: and Dauris Rucker country was born.
In retrospect, Hootie does have country influence, and so his transition to country is not as surprising as it was when it happened.
Darius Rucker actually played a couple of different genres after Hootie and the Blowfish broke up. I think one genre was reggae, don't remember what else. Then he got into country music. He's one of the best country artists out there now.
Hootie and the blowfish was always country. It's all in the instruments.
Hootie and the blowfish was always country. It's all in the instruments.
Darius Rucker has some wonderful country music. His country solo career is outstanding
Hootie and the Blowfish latest album is great
Awful
@@Jamessmith-xk3fh They have a new album?
Agree
Hootie and the blowfish- Let her cry is amazing
Darius Rucker, his real passion is country music which he does now. His cover of "Wagon Wheel" is great.
"Let Her Cry" is where its at with this band. Always makes me feel something.
One of the biggest selling albums of the last 30 years and one of the biggest debut albums ever and there is not a bad song on it
Huge Darius' Rucker fan here, whether Hootie & The Blowfish or as a Country artist. His voice is so distinctive to me, I believe he'd master any genre of music....👍
Hoodie is alternative rock back in the day and now their lead singer Darius Rucker is a country solo artist now
That's a funny auto-correct
Though Darius is a solo country artist, he still does shows and tours with H&tBF. So he's straddling the line and breaking down walls, in rock and country, for Black artists.
i took my son to their concert when he was 14 he's now 40 we had the best time ever...i hear their songs and i remember that night ... we rocked and he wasn't even embarrassed to be seen with mom that night
Darius Rucker has a great voice! It has a nice rasp to it. He's been singing country for a while...but he really could do any genre.
I was a massive fan when they were huge back in the 90s. I was a bartender and we played a lot of Hootie and the Blowfish..and it never hurt that Darius was easy on the eyes and his magnificent voice!!
Van- you will love his “Wagon Wheel” video . Hootie and the Blowfish were Rock/pop. Darius Rucker is a great country artist now.
I love Hootie and the Blowfish.
That's Darius Rucker. He's FANTASTIC! Check out "Let Her Cry" from when he was still with the group.
As a solo artist he sings "If I Told You" and "Wagon Wheel". Great songs!
Ok, you're my favorite person right now, Van!! This my JAM!!! Lol 😆 That album is great.
The band members were friends at the University of South Carolina and they had a couple of other mutual friends, one whose nickname was Hootie and another called The Blowfish. They probably should have anticipated that EVERYONE would dub Darius as Hootie and the rest as The Blowfish. 😂

This is pure country and I love it. I grew up on hootie/ Darius Rucker

I'm 53 and I've been listening to Hootie for what seems like forever, great voice
Let Her Cry is a song you must listen to! I love his voice. Grew up listening to them.
Hootie!! AKA Darius Rucker...love anything he sings... Always have always will!❤️❤️🔥🔥❤️❤️
I love his voice no matter what he’s singing lol❤️
Darius has a voice of gold … love him and the band along with all the LFR family
Darius’ voice is AMAZING! This is my favorite song by them and it’s on repeat in my home!
He sounds like that because he IS THAT. He's a southern fella. ❤️
I loved Darius Rucker's evocative and sensitive voice, back during the "Hootie and the Blowfish" period through his solo career. His voice and emotional expression always takes center stage when I hear him.

Their songs always give me butterflies, even after all this time. Such a great band. 💖
Darius Rucker. One of the most talented musicians. He's stood the test of time. Was good in this band, made the transition to country... Still Killin it. 🔥🔥🔥
Hootie was a big part of my childhood, I was surprised and amazed when he went country lol

I'm not a country fan but I LOVED Hootie and the Blowfish....my CD was blasting in the car.
My favorite on the CD was Only Want to be With You.

Agree with Only Want to be with You. Great song, and not a bad song on the album. Seeing them in concert back then was a real fun time.

I looooooove Hootie & the Blowfish. (Darius has SUCH a great voice, seriously)
Dude I was 10 when this came out and I rocked to it all the time. Hootie was one of the biggest bands of the 90s and I loved every sec of it
The Key & Peele skit of this is priceless!
His name Darius Rucker. He sings country now. For the past 10 years. Also a black female country singer. She is great.
Darius is super talented, fantastic lyricist and vocalist. Best of all he’s a really nice dude, very grounded and humble 👍🏻
Did so many long road trips with Cracked Rear View in the CD player during the 90’s.
It was a soundtrack to my and my wife’s pre-marriage years.
Darius Rucker has an amazing voice! ❤ Loved Hootie and the Blowfish and love his country songs now!
The brother can tell a story , and that voice
Caught them in my early 20's when I was hanging out on campus at Auburn university, they were known as a college campus band from South Carolina I believe but they were great, and his country songs are great too,
They played my friend's house all the time they really made me sick they were playing venues like the music farm before that before college
🤲🏻🙏🏻 Love this song. Grew up with the cassette tape in the console of my moms suv. Thanks for sharing, haven’t it heard for a long time. 💕
Hootie and the Blowfish saturated the 90's with their music.
And Darius Rucker's voice is one of the most recognizable ones in rock history.
I`ve seen countless bands live and getting to see these guys live in Manchester UK in 1998 was something else all together..."Let Her Cry" is still on my top ten best tracks of the 90`s...
Jealous man 😜
Darius Rucker is from Charleston SC, attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia SC.
I love Hootie and the Blowfish was one of my favorite bands. Saw Darius recently when he was in Tampa, still love him!!
Y’all should of played it. Had good times during this era. Saw them live and they were awesome. Might of been floating a little and a little intoxicated but it was absolutely amazing!
“Drowning” is their song about Hatred. I bought the T-shirt because the song 🎧 had such meaning. “Time” and “Not Even The Trees” are also great songs.
I hope Van reacts to the entire album in one sitting
Darius and his friends formed the band at the University of South Carolina and finally hit it big with "Cracked Rear View"!
Love your channel VAN!!

hootie abd the blow fish have a bunch of bangers, let her cry, hold my hand, old man and me, i’ll come runnin, time, and many more
Great singer of great songs!
they had that light rock pop sound that was so common in the 90s. They were a big part of my teens.
Saw them in concert in the early 2000’s. Phenomenal. Please do Let Her Cry.
I rocked Hootie back in the day!! College days.
No matter my mood this tune always makes me smile 🤗🇨🇦
In the 90s, Hootie was one of those bands that everyone pretended to hate but really loved. Don't know why but that's just how it was back then.
If you heard Hootie and the Blowfish in the early years, you knew they started out as a band who played at a lot of college parties. They were tight, loud, and faster than their records. Darius Rucker was definitely a crush of mine when I was a teenager. He has the coolest voice and swagger.
Hootie and the Blowfish was one of the Wife and I's favorite groups back in the day.
They started out as a college band and they hit the big time.
Still love em.
You got that nice twinkle in your eyes...good to see your discovering more great music from the 90's
I think the band were college buddies. My nephew loved them in the 90s?? Check out Only Wanna Be With You
Just saw him tonight in Columbus! Fantastic show!
Hootie and the Blowfish were Alt rock. Always been a huge Darius Rucker fan.
This is my husband(now)and my first dance ever back in 96’.
So proud that they're from my state. South Carolina (hence the official southern "drawl")

Love you, man! You do a great job and I'm sending you hugs and kisses from SoCal❤️💋👍
Love his voice! Seen them in Boston was incredible!
He has a great voice. They made some awesome songs in the 90's. ✌❤
Somehow, I missed that you did this and I'm going to enjoy it now with my morning coffee, you barely see reactions to them and Darius also, on his own. ♥️Ya
Hootie Hootie yess easy vibes
They were usually played on rock stations at the time. Check out his solo work. "If I told you" is a good one

They're actually alternative rock. Listen to Let Her Cry beautiful raspy voice. And the singer Darius Rucker several years ago start a career in country music.
One of my all time favorite voices.
