1971 Road Runner Restored for Cheap! | Roadkill Garage | MotorTrend

- David Freiburger scored the car he'd wanted for 20-plus years, a 1971 Plymouth Road Runner. It was a decent car, mostly original with 95,000 miles on it, but a repaint had turned to chalk, and it looked ridiculous with tiny tires. On Roadkill Garage, we transform it and give it more power on a budget!

Blown away that the paint cleaned up that well.
single stage is pretty amazing if you have enough coats and take your time.
Didn't really matter, but the black pad is actually the finishing pad and the yellow is actually medium cut. On single stage paint with that much oxidation I might have used a heavier diminishing compound, like the one for gelcoat from 3m, with a medium wool pad on the high speed buffer. If you work it just a bit more, it will cut that oxidation better and actually finish pretty nice.
Then you can go right to the glaze with the red pad which still won't haze on the laquer, but you would want a stronger, "long throw" DA polisher. That would save you 2 stages and 4-5 hours of polishing for the same result. They probably have a deal with Maguires, which does the job, but that system would destroy your back and shoulders on a professional level, as well as your productivity in a shop environment.
@@mysterywrecked should it have been wetsanded? i painted my car recently with single stage urethane metallic paint, it came out very nice but there are some little tiny spots like a small skin tag and the shine is good but it could look better i think, what would you recommend i do
that's not a restoration, that's rejuvenation and its how i roll. great job guys
Would have to do more with that soggy low compression ratio '71 383" engine...
I've been rejuvenating my old restoration on my 74 Charger.
@@BuzzLOLOL Why does my 383 in my chevy Corvette run 11's and this thing runs 15's?
@@sebbonxxsebbon6824 - You have better heads, bigger cam, higher compression ratio...
@@BuzzLOLOL How about the high 13 second 350? .420 inch lift cam, stock 624 heads, 9.0 compression..... 230 horse power...
WHEN I WAS GOING THROUGH MY DIVORCE. HOT ROD MAGAZINE SHOWED ME HOW TO HAVE FUN WITH CARS AGAIN. . FOR THAT I AM ETERNALLY GRATEFUL!!!! YOU GUYS ARE AWSOME!!!!
I was not expecting the paint to look that good!
I've always liked the '71 road runner, it looked fast standing still
I like the 69 better in my opinion
I love how humble and laid back you both are. And the farm with the dog racing you on the side. Man what a cool 😎 lifestyle!! God bless you guys.
These 2 are my favorites..so packed with knowledge and how too's
Got to love when the opening scene is an old Mopar sealing the pavement of an east Pixley Ca. Road...Carful Freiburger spend to much time in the central valley, and you will start glowing in the dark. Put Steve in a dark room and you will see what i mean...🤣
Totally agree, love their banter back and forth along with brains that are both filled with a wealth of knowledge across so many different kinds of cars. The crop duster restoration is what I wish they got to with all of these cars cause it’s so interesting and awesome to see how the car starts and how they finish it
Love seeing Roadkill back on UA-cam. There have been some serious classics but I really fell away when it was MotorTrend+ Thanks guys
Wow! That paint came out amazing. Exactly the character that I like!
It looks just perfect and those wheels are exactly right. Man I want it.
The original tires were smaller and didn't look right, and those wheels are the type of classic I love....
'71 Roadrunner is my favorite. When I was a kid back in the 70's, I had an AFX slot car set. And one of the cars was a Petty Blue '71 Roadrunner. I would lay on my stomach with my face next to the track and watch it fishtail off of the corners.
That vintage intake is still a very good choice after all these years, proven with the 650 Holley. Amazing low buck improvement on that car.
CONGRADULATIONS ON YOUR NEW DAILY DRIVER!!!!
My love for mopars started with a 426 wedge car as my dad was a wrench at the local dealership. BUT my first love was when my aunt would pick me up as a kid to take me to DQ in a 1971 petty blue road runner, 340 slap stick car with the white reflective strobe stripes. Love it Frei
My Dad worked many different jobs including service manager for Chrysler from early 50s to 1974, CHRYSLER THE ENGINEERING COMPANY//// he loved the 30s to early 70s cars..He bought us a AFX track with this roadrunner painted blue
David and Steve, this is the direction Roadkill needs to go. Getting these cars 100% usable again and back on the road is where it's at. Please keep going with this Road Runner. Get the interior comfortable and livable for everyday use and just drive the wheels off of it - it's what Mother Mopar built this car for. As long as the roads are clear, my '70 Chevelle is my everyday car so that's why I loved this episode so much. We need more muscle cars back on the road!
agreed. most of the youtubers taking after RK just take their youtube channel money and buy a POS. then when the next check comes in they go buy another one. Meanwhile the Motortrend/Poweblock shows take one car, ladel on the sponsored parts and build a "budget" car that ain't.
It would be an absolute joy to have a channel that takes a car like this, upgrades say the brakes with OEM parts you can get off crockauto (since junkyards are no longer full of C bodies to rob) , maybe put on some Jeep factory rally rims that fit, detail the interior with stuff from WalMart and buff out the stock paint. it may turn into a 50/50 car (great from 50 feet away or going past at 50 mph) or it might surprise people that its actually something they can drive everyday and not be embarassed at a cruise night.
it's how we did things back in the days before 1-800-repop and pro touring suspension kits.
This episode is 5 years old. David Sold that Road Runner years ago. He never daily drove it,
@@MJTAUTOMOTIVE Well that stinks. I had not seen this episode and it came up on the YT feed as if it were recent. Oh well. Thanks for letting me know. I stand by my statement though- we need more muscle cars back on the road!
This is one of my favorite episodes of this whole series. The 2 part of this car I watch every few months.
Paint buffed out nicely too! Dig the slot mags
I’m not a Chrysler guy but I love that car get a nice interior kit on weekend and it’s perfect
I always appreciate the enthusiasm you guys have for these cars. Especially for as long as you guys have been doing it. There will always be busted knuckles and thrown wrenches but you guys genuinely love doing this and it’s awesome. Always makes the content that much better to watch
The 70's chronometer just jolted itself!
Brother that’s my favorite car you guys have ever had, so simple and oem+ I wouldn’t change one thing!!
I'm so glad he got his baby!
Thanks so much for the UA-cam upload!
One of the coolest looking body styles ever!
Gotta love it
“This is how it’s done”
I don’t think Steve realised how funny he actually is at times 😂
"When the rabbits eat the wires on the forklift"
I think 71 is the best looking RoadRunner of all
Great to see you guys back on y/t . Can’t get motor trend in New Zealand so have missed the great content.
They aren't back. They're just combining old episodes that were on yt already before they left us to charge for episodes on their own website.
Lol actually watching this exact episode on MotorTrend
One of my favorite cars
I love satellites and roadrunners of that generation.
I love how they reached for the buffer, tape and polish first thing before any compression check. Rad project - cheers!
This video was uploaded 2 years ago, but I still enjoyed it
Love that “ broken glass” starter sound on the old Mopars!
In my opinion this generation of roadrunner is one of the most beautiful cars ever produced 🙏
CONGRATULATIONS DAVID !!!! YOU HAVE A VERY BEAUTIFUL DAILY DRIVER!!!! I LOVE THE UPGRADES!!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE TRANSFORMATION!!!!
71/72 Roadrunner has always been my favourite. They look fast just standing still.
it's the baddest body of the musclecars
69 for me
@@sheldondrake8935 Well, that would be the 69 Charger, but this would be a close second.
Bring back Dirt Every Day
You should really read the story on why the show is no more. Its unfortunate but it makes sense.
He has his own UA-cam now
Junk yard gold..
@@michaelking550 yes. That show was great
@@JaredBlanchard I read that article awhile ago. And?
That's a sweet car! There's just something about the 71-72' front end on the Roadrunner, Coronets, etc.. that scream Mopar! Takes me back 😊
Beautiful daily restore of a great car. ❤
My Uncle has this exact same car sitting in his backyard except it’s green. I don’t think it’s a roadrunner I think it’s a satellite. I always thought these cars were so cool especially the front of them. Makes me want to start working on it. Love Roadkill Garage definitely a good episode.
Sounds like it's time to start mowing your uncle's lawn or raking his leaves
@@yeahitskimmel Most Definitely!
I know the 71 road runner isn't everyone's favorite, But i'll always love the way they look.
And i don't even have any memories with them
I can rem reading David's article that went something like "What it's like to drive a race car" or something like that, it was his Super Bee, that was some time in the 90's, here we are now kinda full circle, happy with factory fast.
My grandparents had the 440, my grandmother would tell stories of people trying to race here, she did a few times.
WWII Vet, tough lady.
Emotional. Emotions. Heart beats. Thank you dudes!
That turned out sweet! Nice driver, MOPAR TO YA!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I wouldn't have sold that car. Very sharp. Great driver that looks awesome
I'll watch. I'll love every single second....
I'm pushing 70 and always thought that model was outrageously good looking. It has a real presence. To find a decent one that runs strong is a such a great find. The only thing I would have done differently is immediately stick a set of 4 wheel disc brakes on it to make it safe as a daily driver. Looking forward to seeing more about the evolution of this project
I did all the same stuff to my 72 Lemans 2 door hardtop. I've been driving it everyday for a couple of years now. It just turned 90,000 miles. People love that thing. From Cali, no rust, runs perfect. I've actually gotten known for that car. LOL. I never want it to stop.
Kind of reminds me of the way it was in the old days. Early 1980's I was 20 years old with two Mopars. God I miss those days.
My Dad brought a 2 year old one of these home , it had the 440 cant remember if it was a 4 spd, He was a manager for Chrysler,,I still love these cars also,,such a huge impact on me,,, thanks for helping remember the good old days///
makes me miss my 383 magnum 1971 yellow RT
Those slotted mag's are where it's at. If I had 3 sets it wouldn't be enough
My absolute favorite car of all time. The dream.
Most of what you guys do is just very entertaining and not something I would ever do. But I would love any B body with a 383 and a 4 speed. Thanks for showing this.
I could swear I remember him buying his dream car(really nice one) at some point a few years ago on an episode of one of his shows
People can have more than one dream, you know.
I believe it was the "dIsgustang"
This episode is 5 years old.
When I was 12, back in the summer of1984, I saw a '71 Road Runner, 440, red, strobe stripe, black interior. The owner started it up for me, Herkimer, NY, the owner was named Marco, wonder if that car is still around.
I always loved these early 70s long nosed mopars!
Had a buddy in HS with one of these. It's a top-end beast with the stock gear. I'd leave it alone.
Man thats the most satisfying quick job is saving paint like that! Love seein it transform on any ol' car let alone a Road Runner!
I bought a blue 71 satalite , an ex moonshine runner, no power nuthin, switch up under the dash to disable the taillights, lowered down, stuck to the road like glue, and she would do 120 in a big hurry, a real sleeper, except for the big wide 60s front and back , I loved that Plymouth !
i fell in love with that body style from seeing Darth Vader Road Runner in motor trend mag in the early to mid 80's
i think im about the same age as David and when he expains things i feel old, because i have sanded and replaced points a lot..lol..i love this guy i have watched him for years and read his articles and seen his pictures for over 20 years before he was a regular on tv..
Nice, and it looks great...
She's a beauty. Keep up the good work. I love your videos.
Best roadkill video of all...
My first car was a 71GTX. Miss that car!
Don’t forget to recurve the distributor,
You want the advance all in by 2200 with 3.23 gears. Power disc brakes on the front are a must in modern traffic.
Great video. Crazy how the paint came back. Looks awesome.
Loved the video! So cool to see this vehicle come back to life! Great job!
Keep the paint as is!
looks great and an every day head turner!
Very Nice.
I am definitely impressed.
Car is definitely a keeper.
The 383's are often overlooked.
And underestimated.
Great work guys.
Take care, EM.
old school coooool
Had a '71' Roadrunner, and a '72' Sebring. Wish I had them back.
15:12 Mind-blowing speed!
Still got it. Paint the hood and roof matte black...awesum. Car
I had a 1971 Plymouth Satalite, 440 slap stick. White high back buckets and a white vinyl roof over a maroon paint job and 14" tires. I loved that car. I was 16. Never forget a jackwad I beat who had a '69 Boss. Somehow my transmission lines got cut after wards. Hm.
The red on the drums actually looks good.
Looks great 👍👍👍
So glad to see him so stoked both of them
Dulcich makes this show
Hope he never changes
Another classic car that won't be a trailer queen, thank God
These are great looking cars! Awesome transformation!! The paint under the vinyl roof might not look good so I'd change it to a black vinyl. Love it!!!
Came out looking awesome. 👍
I love the approach taken here---nothing radical, just making an original musclecar into a daily
My dad bought the 1971 satellite Sebring in 1975 with a blown motor for 200 bucks and had the motor rebuilt then traded it in. It was blue and he called it the blue angel. To this day I said when I was an adult I would buy one. I’m a fan like this one in the video a daily driver and not mint; but the problem is the prices are soo expensive
I had the 72 with the 318 and posi!!! This is awesome!!!
Love this car!
I used to think these cars were ugly, but for the past few years I’ve been wanting one bad!!
Older brother ordered a 71 in 70. Sales people were all lying that "the Road Runner from 70 tp 71 isn't going to change!". Red with black cross dashes and a 383 with a slapstick.
Saved another one. Good for you. It is a religion
I love that you are on axle stands, not a shop hoist, keeping it real.
I did my apprenticeship with panel and paint, wool pads are old school, the new pads and machines are the way to go, also a lot lighter
" Jazzy " ~ old school cool ;)
What it needs now is a Dana 60 sure grip rear end
Color came back right nice fellas!
My first car after high-school was the 72 version of that car and I'd love to have another one
I have always loved that year body style. That car looks mean.
Polishing dead paint lasts for maybe a month under sunny weather unless you use a cermaic spray wax after polish. But you better make sure the paint is clean, cool and you keep the car out of direct sunlight for 48 hours after ceramic spray wax is performed.
Sweet ride👍
This one is on my list 2 🤩👏🏾
I love that body style!
Excellent! I love it. You guys got it looking fantastic and running great. ❤ I love what you guys do .
Reminds me of my 73 road runner in high school
