  • My apologies on this one! With both my latest trailer modifications and travel on hold until the weather improves, I have had to rely on prior footage to compile a new video. These are a few stragglers that didn't make the final cut. Sidenote: The section where I responded to camping anxieties was shot in 2019, before "the world event". My response however is still the same.

      Did you see when those boys from Pitviper paid CTC a visit? Thats all they were doing was eating corn, and riding on top of the roof of a million dollar combine. So if Slim started eating corn off the cob, we'd have to call him Slim the Cornstar. HAHA

    Bravo! I love your humor.......blending one video into another.....like walking the old railroad track talking about a bridge..then driving over the bridge :).
    I love your featuring the truckers who are always so helpful! I was hauling 2 yearling colts when I heard this horrible sound. I pulled over and a trucker pulled over too. I had picked up a piece of a semi truck leaf spring. It embedded in the wood floor of the trailer and was digging into the road. We had to get inside the trailer and pound it out. I stood by the back leg of the horse incase it got scared of the noise and kicked out. This way the trucker was shielded. I could not have done this without his help. Soon we were both back on the road.

    A comment about chlorinated water;
    It is nearly impossible to over chlorinate a water system. The cost would be staggering.
    Ironically - the "over-chlorinated" taste and smell, is from NOT keeping the proper amount of chlorine in the system.
    An "Over-Chlorinated" taste in a water supply is from a 'bacteria bloom'. A rapid resurgence of the bacteria normally found in a given water supply.
    Either way NOT DRINKING it, was the right choice.

    Loved your Slim Bits. Agree wholeheartedly with your fear of black ice. Nearly fell off a 2000 foot cliff in Colorado Rockies to the point where my front wheels were dangling and the car was rocking. Literally had my life flash before my eyes. Kissed the floor when back home and held my daughter close.

    Thanks Slim -- and please don't apologize for making a video that doesn't have a brilliant motif. That's usually how life is!
    I don't want to criticize your menu choices (after all, they are nearly universal in this part of the world). But I want to pass along some things I was reminded of a couple of years ago.
    For many millennia my species has relied on foods readily available -- the hunter/gatherers. Our metabolisms adapted to eat when and what was found (irregularly available meats and fish, and in-season fruits). A few thousand years ago agriculture made certain plant seeds -- grains -- an important part of our year-round diet. They also fed our domesticated animals as that food source became prevalent. Over the last hundred years or so, there have been even more revolutionary changes in our food sources. Fruits can be eaten year-round, oils are extracted from seeds with modern machine and chemical methods, livestock is raised on artificial fodders, etc. The net result of all these changes isn't too surprising -- our DNA hasn't changed as fast as our diet has.
    What does that look like, and why should I care? Well, it's possible nowadays to draw a straightforward cause and effect line between our menu and many of the most prevalent diseases and conditions -- but that's only fun if you're a fanatic! More simply, it looks like the current state of our food supply, pharmaceutical, and healthcare Industries.
    If I am, or believe I am, healthy, why should I care? That's much simpler. Because eating supports life itself, I can't really justify a casual attitude to my behavior there without risking the easy spread of the same attitude to the rest of my life. I'm left with a very good question -- what am I responsible for?

    Hello again! Here's a good story about how great truckers are!
    My car was on fire while I was on the freeway. As I pulled off the next exit, a trucker had followed me off the road. He got out of his truck holding his fire extinguisher! My car was ruined, but that trucker went over and above! It could have been much worse without his watchful eye (and helpfulness!!) I hope he feels my gratitude even to this day.

    I can remember as a child i couldnt wait till after school to be outside and enjoy the snow or the forest. It was always a great adventure finding tracks.. places animals hunkered down for the night or a plant i had not really noticed before. Sometimes id just sit in a tree and watch the wildlife or other humans do their thing.. then by the time i got home, my snow suit stood by its self upright in the garage...lol. id check to see and take it to the basement to drip dry as our basement was heated. Then bring it upstairs before bed so i could put it on before school. Nobody did this for me. I forgot once and it was a chilly walk to school.. it was amazing how much kids grow each year but that coat and pants fit for several years.. and i was glad to have it. By middle school, and now on the bus i only wore it a couple times so i wouldnt miss the bus and there were no woods close to our house so the cozy coat sufficed my needs.

    Thank you for your comment about not being scared of other people. Recently I am in a situation where I feel like I can trust no one and I am all alone. It's reassuring to hear from someone who chooses to travel alone, that people are good and willing to help. Somehow it's the message I think I need to remember. And I agree with you. In light of big things such as this war in Ukraine and now Israel, it can be hard to believe in humanity especially combined with how alone I actually am right now. But you give hope. Thank you. BTW when I watch your videos I put them on autoplay that is probably why people do not read descriptions. Hi Slim. Long time fan and watcher. As a woman over 75 who has traveled, camped and lived alone for many years....here are my thoughts about anxiety concerning humans as a source of anxiety. First, I believe you must understand that men are generally stronger and bigger than women.....overall. Yes, of course, there are exceptions! But, generally, women are a a little bit less likely to be able to defend themselves against some forms of assault. Second, whether we want to admit it or not, women alone can, and sometimes, do, present a target for criminals. So, knowing this reality I have taken steps to protect myself with common sense. I have installed security and safety devices to alert me if someone is near my camper. I have learned to defend myself physically to the best of my ability. And, frankly, I have learned to know how to assess risk and to pick campsites that don’t put me in obviously rough situations.
    A Bit of common sense goes a long way. Yes, the overwhelming majority of people are kind, helpful and genuinely decent. However, as a woman camping and living alone, I have to say that I take care of myself as best I can......and go forward in peace.

    • @SlimPotatohead
      @SlimPotatohead  3 роки тому +1

      @meh1943, being prepared for any possible threat is an excellent strategy, and I completely agree with your advice. My point is not to live in fear, and never let fear take over your life. Wilderness camping is one of the last few bastions for peace and comfort for many people, as they no longer trust cities. Once that is gone there is not hope. Understand fear and conquer it by being informed, aware and prepared. But at the same time be kind and compassionate to those around you. It sounds like you have already achieved that. More power to you! SP

    Hi Slim, Another very enjoyable video.The grilled cheese sandwich looked very yummy. My favorite way of making them is “inside out grilled cheese”. The way I do them is butter the bread and make the sandwich as usual. Before placing the sandwich into the frying pan, I like to put a little pat of butter into the pan and allow it to melt and then sprinkle some shredded cheese into the pan. I then place the sandwich on top of the shredded cheese. Repeat the process for second side. You’ll end up with a sandwich with the melted cheese inside and a somewhat crispy, caramelized cheese on the outside. It’s my new go to sandwich.... Enjoy!!!

    Hey Slim try the grilled cheese sandwich, with the mustard and mayo dipped in tomato soup.

    For grilled cheese, my family always made them with just butter spread on - always been good.

    Hi Slim, Thank you for that fun video. The part I enjoyed very much was you explaining the joys of being outdoors seeing nature, touching nature, and being where you are. I try to share my love of the outdoors with as many friends as I can here in Oregon and we have some beautiful places. I tent camp year-round and spend some time on the coast in the winter. I think winter is one of my most favorite times to spend outdoors. Thanks again for the great videos!

    Thanks to the folks who suggested mustard and mayo. I'm going to try that. I stopped using ketchup (mustard only now) about 50 years ago when I developed diabetes - some sugar in it. My go for grilled cheese is Worcestershire sauce, gentle heat and a lid ensure melting without burning.
    Black ice: taking your foot off the gas causes 'engine braking' and can makes things worse. Put the vehicle in neutral but keep your hand on the gearshift to put it back in gear to apply some limited forward force. The trailer is still pushing you. It's worth practicing on a closed track with snow banks - better still to just avoid it as Slim does.

    That sign forest is so cool! I will have to try the mustard grill cheese sandwich, but my favorite thing to put on a grilled cheese sandwich is a juicy slice of tomato! I like the idea for bits and pieces. Great video.

    Love all your videos!! I agree 100% about the truckers!! They are the best, along with the bikers! I always give truckers plenty of room to see me. Never have understood why people want to ride right on a truck's back bumper. Some people have no respect for others on the road. In my younger days, I belonged to the Concerned Bikers Association. They are an awesome bunch of people too. 99.9% of bikers you see on the road will stop and help someone that is broke down on the side of the road.
    Lots of people won't stop and help now, because of all the meanness in the world.
    Be Safe and Happy Travels!!!!!

    I passed by the signpost forest, on my way to work in Fairbanks, February, 2018, pretty cool, heh, heh... You’re right about folks helping out in the wilderness. I rolled my truck off a mountain road, just after taking a selfie of myself and wife at the Alaska/Canada border. We were definitely in the wilderness, no cell phone service, our truck totaled and I was bleeding. Help came from some young men who saw us go off the road, in their rear view mirror. They were on their way to their homes in Tok, 50 miles away. They saved us. Texas

      Yup ... I saw a group of vehicles stopped at the side of the Alaskan highway, in the Yukon. They were tending to a Biker that had crashed. They decided to wait with him until an ambulance showed up (they had everything under control and needed no one else to assist).

    Way to thank truckers! That’s very good of you. Also I love what you said about other people. I have found that to be very true; they are always friendly and helpful especially when you’re camping or just on the road. Women do face a slightly different reality but we use our gut instincts and common sense to overcome situations which could be unsafe. Thanks for a good look back and current pick-me-up. Keep up the great videos. ❤️
