Ok. I just ordered this movie. It looks right up my alley. I really hope you didn't just show all the best parts. Edit:. I have finally seen the film and it was everything I could have hoped for. Thank you for introducing me to it.
WOW! I've seen Ed Glaser in most of his videos but I haven't seen him as charismatic as in this. The natural, improv style suits him big time. Thanks for this amazing video!
This is easily one of my favorite Movie Night episodes next to Who's Your Caddy. I like seeing you interact with Ed Glaser. Hopefully you two do more videos in the future on this stuff. I like hearing about the insight of this film.
I love randomly seeing Ed pop up in videos. We went to the same high school and I have fond memories of shooting the shit about bad movies during PE and watching an early MST3K-style "fan edit" of the Dungeons and Dragons movie he made the year after it came out.
Ed Glaser has this incredible talent of turning very specific niche pieces of information into the most fascinating thing on earth. Love that man. Also, I have to get ahold of this movie, it sounds amazing! Thanks!
UA-cam suggested your video to me, so glad I checked it out. Great movie recommendation. Just finished watching it and loved it! Love old school kung fu action and comedy of this type. Can't thank you enough :-) Subscribing now
I remember seeing this on showtime when it first came out in like 90 or 91. I watched it constantly and now anybody I ask about it has never heard of it.
That scene where the kid cut the rope was actually a reference to a Japanese short story by Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Spider's Thread. This ripoff with literal tire-fires is for realy-reals smart, yo.
For basically as long as we've been together, my wife's ring tone on my phone has been the opening theme from Prince of the Sun. I always tell her she is probably the only person on Earth with that ring tone.... she doesn't appreciate it.
I loved The Golden Child, and actually saw it in theaters. That's right, kids. I'm older than dirt. In fact, I invented dirt. I was bored and tired of constantly being clean.
@Dennis McConnell I didn't know that, until just now. Thanks for telling me. Weird that they wouldn't give her any dialogue, since most boys that age could easily pass for girls by voice. It was her only movie, too. Her one movie, no dialogue, and she has to pretend to be a boy. She got shafted, but it's still a fun movie.
Wow, the villain not only looks like Devilman, his fate also homages Dostoyevsky (look up the parable of the onion) by way of Ryunosuke Akutagawa (The Spider's Thread).
My best friends mom was watching this in Catonese (no subtitles) at our place a few weeks ago, and it is just as awesome when you have no idea what anyone is saying
This movie was one of my favorites when i was younger. it used to be on either Showtime, Cinemax or HBO all the time, but real late at night. Still have my taped VHS copy. By the way Jeffery Fallcon also plays Buddy (sic Holly) in this sweet low budget movie called Six String Samurai which is really weird kung-fu adventure movie in post apocalyptic future where Vegas is the last American City after the Russians nuked America and Elvis became King. And Buddy is fighting against Death to become the new king of Vegas. Its freaking awesome and worth finding a copy of if you can. I highly recommend it!
This is the most interesting film you reviewed in a while. An obscure gem I just have to watch! I go for Chinese humour. And this is certainly good here. Even the worst character is somehow likable. And holy crap! That Bat --Man! 😄He's like a power rangers villian done right. As an earlier commenter stated, the main male character is played and presented a bit like a Jackie Chan substitute. Feels like everybody involved had a blast doing this movie. And production quality is surprising. And I'm happy I was introduced to Ed Glaser and his work. Can't wait to check on his videos! This channel keeps getting better and more entertaining
All the people old enough to see this movie when it was out in my weirdass family actually love this movie. To this day, anyone of them could randomly yell "Brother NOOP-SIE!"... Yeah.
The abusive teacher casting is so interesting to me because conventionally she's such a beautiful young woman and in my mind when I think 'hag teacher with ruler raised to beat child and secret child gambling ring' my mind wants to go to an older , rougher looking character, but this woman looks more like a damsel in distress/coy love interest- I'm sure it's def probably a cultural difference from here to there but I think the change up is really cool regardless
I loved Prince of the Sun! Originally watched it sometime during the early 90s when they used to air it on one of the movie channels. Was a fave of my family (especially with my mom and little sisters). I gotta get this on blu-ray!
I recognize a lot of those dub voices from the '90s-era Godzilla movies. If you watch Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (easily the Heisei-era movie I've seen the most), for instance, you'll hear a lot of these voices. Like the lead dude in that is also dubbed by the guy doing Conan Lee here.
Wow, I have been watching a lot of Movie Nights, and usually I prefer the solo reviews because they seem to be more in depth and analytical, but Ed Glaser was awesome. It was nice to have a co-host who added context, history, and researched insights. Only so many times you want to hear "this movie is stupid and bad haha."
Oh snap! You *and* Ed reviewing a Cynthia Rothrock movie?! And it's one I've seen? Yes! I held off on watching this just to watch all of Ninja the Mission Force first.
oh damn a VCR cleaner in the background???!!!! i remeber those!!!! remember having to also take the cover off the VCR to wipe it down with a cloth and cleaner. nope don't miss that lol
I also have a question regarding the voices, when a movie is dubbed for english is there a reason why they dub over english speakers? I'm asking this assuming Rothrock was saying her lines in english though, not sure.
LOL. More like ALL Hong Kong films of that era of were filmed without sound. This allowed them to cast many actors in lead roles who spoke no Chinese at all. Case in point, California-native Lloyd Hutchinson, billed in this film (and all others) as "CONAN LEE".
Sheila Chan's character is probably a spoof, because Stephen Chow and Ng Man-tat were on the rise with their Mo lei tau(nonsensical slapstick humour) comedies during the early 90's and this movie relies on said humour. In the 1990 they made the classic All for the Winner and Sheila Chan was in it. The movie was a parody of the first God of Gamblers and after Winner's success, Stephen Chow and NG Man-tat starred in two God of Gamblers sequel and few spin-offs. So I guess the poster is an inside joke aimed towards the God of Gamblers franchise, since every poster had characters holding revealed cards in the same manner. Or simply, I'm reading too much into it.
"If anything happens to the living Buddha, you'll have me to deal with!" "Alright! You can beat me as well!" "Oh, I'm not gonna beat you - I'll kill you!" *shocked face*
I love Cynthia Rothrock films. She really knows how to handle an action scene. It also helps that she’s an undefeated martial arts champion and she’s been in films with HK film heavy hitters such as Michelle Yeoh and Sammo Hung. Definitely check out Yes Madam/Police Assassins. It’s worth the watch! It’s one of the few you could easily say she’s the star in the film along with Michelle Yeoh. Another one is the China O’Brien series.
Allison reviewed Yes, Madam and both China O'Brien movies, among many other Cynthia Rothrock films, in Obscurus Lupa Presents. In fact, her first review was Undefeatable.
As to the Skeletor rip-off on the cover... isn't he holding the musical key device from that movie also? The painter of the movie poster couldn't at least leave out the MacGuffin device from a different movie? Amazing.
I think an internet review succeeds when I'm saying: "I must find this movie now" when the review is over. Under those terms, this review succeeds tenfold.
I remember watching this film on TV back in high school. I remember that somehow russian voiceover was even funnier than english dub because of the stupid high-pitched voice of the actor who did it. Anyway, thanks for reminding of this film, got to rewatch it sometime

*Child gets thrown*
I dont know, it sure made me laugh

Seriously, a review w/ Ed Glaser?
REALLY GREAT! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! AAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA! *GWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!*
Been a fan and subscriber for years! I NEVER tire of videos or this opening tune
This is one of your BEST videos!
I hope you can do more reviews with Ed in the future. You two have a good rapport!
"LOok over there, they're fighting" sounds a little like Wabuu.
Little Bear "That's Soooo STUPID".
@@eamonndeane587 SCENE INTERRUPTING BEAR!!!
"Most of these Bat-Men are sooo stupid! Hehehe..."
Ed Glaser has this incredible talent of turning very specific niche pieces of information into the most fascinating thing on earth. Love that man.
Also, I have to get ahold of this movie, it sounds amazing! Thanks!
I always welcome Ed's wealth of knowledge.
Ed is an adorable human being.
Apparently, the budget for this was $35-million. That's almost unheard of for a HK movie from the early 90s.
Allison talking about Rothrock, the Golden Child, comedy so bad its funny, and the G-Laser! Movie Nights just keeps getting better and better.
Golden Child with Cynthia Rothrock? THAT SOUNDS AWESOME
And yes, Cynthia Rothrock movies BEG for Allison-Ed crossovers
I laughed so much during this review seeing all these clips.
UA-cam suggested your video to me, so glad I checked it out. Great movie recommendation. Just finished watching it and loved it! Love old school kung fu action and comedy of this type.
Can't thank you enough :-) Subscribing now
I need that Less Fashion shirt to add with my pug angel crop top.
Kaebee don’t forget; Shoot hoops, not drugs!
36:18 Legend has it that Eddie Murphy originally turned down the role of Donkey in Shrek. That is, until he found out Donkey gets with the dragon...
Eddie was always disappointed that his character in the Golden Child didn't have sex with the half-dragon woman.
I gotta check this movie out! Had no idea but looks good 😀 Great work, LOVE this channel!! 😊😊
I got this movie because of this review. I was not disappointed. It's legitimately hilarious. :-)
This ripoff with literal tire-fires is for realy-reals smart, yo.
i mean, clever enough reference.
25:48 Holy Crap, DEVILMAN!
Samuel Chin Orozco YEAHHHHH

The good old Looney Tunes "finger in the gunbarrel" gag
Wow, the villain not only looks like Devilman, his fate also homages Dostoyevsky (look up the parable of the onion) by way of Ryunosuke Akutagawa (The Spider's Thread).
Does the Villain in this also have a Girlfriend with a Yellow hair ribbon who gets her head shoved on a pike?
Loved having Ed on the show! Hope he returns soon!
"You have no pants on and your legs are all hairy and disgusting!"
"Yeah, you got a point."
What?
It's good to see you getting back to reviewing a Rothrock flick again. And I'm glad you both enjoyed this one
Ed! I JUST rewatched Ninja the Mission Force season 2. What a crazy coinkidink.
Oh god, the Space Thunder Kids flashbacks.
the villain looks like a live action knock-off devilman
My best friends mom was watching this in Catonese (no subtitles) at our place a few weeks ago, and it is just as awesome when you have no idea what anyone is saying

This was really fun Allison! You should do more of these crossovers.

@Dennis McConnell can you prove that? where did you here it?
It's always nice when you're expecting almost nothing and given almost everything.
That shirt with the stars is superb!
The abusive teacher casting is so interesting to me because conventionally she's such a beautiful young woman and in my mind when I think 'hag teacher with ruler raised to beat child and secret child gambling ring' my mind wants to go to an older , rougher looking character, but this woman looks more like a damsel in distress/coy love interest- I'm sure it's def probably a cultural difference from here to there but I think the change up is really cool regardless
don't judge a book by its cover
I loved Prince of the Sun! Originally watched it sometime during the early 90s when they used to air it on one of the movie channels. Was a fave of my family (especially with my mom and little sisters). I gotta get this on blu-ray!
I remember seeing this movie when I was really young and it always stuck with me, but I had forgotten its name. Thank you for this video :)
One of the funniest Movie Nighta yet!
Ah, the 80s/90s, where even low-budget films had at least awesome cover artwork. :)
You are such an inspiration to me 💜💜💜💜
There's a distinct _What's Up, Tiger Lily_ feeling to this.
Great review. This movie does sound interesting. I hope you do a full review of The Golden Child as well.
Very entertaining review!
Golden Child is great. I love that movie
I love the intro music... reminds me of You Belong To The City
I think the bat man costume is just a devilman reference
Yay! It's the G Laser! Gotta say, this movie does look pretty funny in that "so bad, it's good" kinda way.
Wait, wait. Jeff Falcon? As in Jeffrey Falcon, from Six-String Samurai?
This thing's hard to find for our region or streaming rn in the US. Buuuut, it's free on UA-cam dubbed, if anybody's lookin.
Awesome crossover!
Is Ed a vampire? Because he hasn't aged! Awesome to see you guys finally team up!
Okay, late to the party, but the use of the clip from "Seagulls (Stop it now!)" was absolutely perfect.
This was great.
Oh snap! You *and* Ed reviewing a Cynthia Rothrock movie?! And it's one I've seen? Yes!
I held off on watching this just to watch all of Ninja the Mission Force first.
Prince of the Sun is Golden Child with Cynthia Rothrock and from Hong Kong. I was in.
I think I need to see this movie. It's so up my alley!
Golden Child is by far Eddie’s best movie. 🍿
oh damn a VCR cleaner in the background???!!!! i remeber those!!!! remember having to also take the cover off the VCR to wipe it down with a cloth and cleaner. nope don't miss that lol
I watched this movie growing up, fond memories
How have I never seen this movie? I love movies like this!!!
Great classic!!
I am more familiar with that anime movie Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata were part of. :) It was called Horus: Prince of the Sun.
In the UK that film is on DVD under the Name 'The Little Norse Prince'.
My life is just a little better after knowing this exists
I also have a question regarding the voices, when a movie is dubbed for english is there a reason why they dub over english speakers? I'm asking this assuming Rothrock was saying her lines in english though, not sure.
Because a lot of films like this are recorded without sound and then dubbed into multiple languages later.
ohh! thanks for the info!
LOL. More like ALL Hong Kong films of that era of were filmed without sound. This allowed them to cast many actors in lead roles who spoke no Chinese at all. Case in point, California-native Lloyd Hutchinson, billed in this film (and all others) as "CONAN LEE".
neonharbor.com Odd that wasn't in the description.
One question for the both of you now: What's a ninja?
ua-cam.com/video/cegdR0GiJl4/v-deo.html
Just an urban legend. ;)
Real world answer: the spies of feudal Japan. Pop culture on both sides of the Pacific has distorted them into superhuman assassins/warriors.
Jeff Falcon was also in "Six String Samurai."
Watching this tonight
Can’t get enough of that dubbed rothrock crisps
Every time I hear that guy's voice, inevitably, in the back of my mind...
SPACE!!!
THUNDER KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
25:48 Aw snap! It's not!Devilman!
WaDevilman

Or simply, I'm reading too much into it.
Thanks for the insight!
I don't know if anyone's noticed but Cythnia Rothrock, at the age of 61, still has it goin' on.
Geez. The Skeletor on the poster even has the Cosmic Key!
The teacher is a reverse Jason - mean, brutal but she is leaving trough crashing windows, not entering
@24:54 Is that the chief warden from Riki-oh?
"If anything happens to the living Buddha, you'll have me to deal with!"
"Alright! You can beat me as well!"
"Oh, I'm not gonna beat you - I'll kill you!"
*shocked face*
5:45 OMG THIS IS SO BAD I WANT TO SEE REVIEWS OF THAT11!!!111!
I love Cynthia Rothrock films. She really knows how to handle an action scene. It also helps that she’s an undefeated martial arts champion and she’s been in films with HK film heavy hitters such as Michelle Yeoh and Sammo Hung.

Anytime! :)
Allison reviewed Yes, Madam and both China O'Brien movies, among many other Cynthia Rothrock films, in Obscurus Lupa Presents. In fact, her first review was Undefeatable.
So I occasionally rewatch your older reviews, after watching vampire cop I’m left wondering...
Shark Exorcist when?
But Seriously...
Is that Ed Glaiser?
"Run, run, run and jump. I can be your backpack while you run."
Cynthia is magic on film.
As to the Skeletor rip-off on the cover... isn't he holding the musical key device from that movie also? The painter of the movie poster couldn't at least leave out the MacGuffin device from a different movie? Amazing.
I saw a Samo Hung movie on television late at night once and the dubbing was entirely in cockney accents.
I'd wear a backpack kid, but if it becomes popular and everyone's wearing one, I'm not interested.
14:52 holy shit! Did he chuck a durian at her head?! That’s like swinging a mace into someone’s face!
I know this was uploaded months ago, but I just saw it and can't let this go... 8:26 A how many hour day?
i love the Six-String Samurai guy
I think an internet review succeeds when I'm saying: "I must find this movie now" when the review is over. Under those terms, this review succeeds tenfold.
REALLY GREAT WAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I remember watching this film on TV back in high school. I remember that somehow russian voiceover was even funnier than english dub because of the stupid high-pitched voice of the actor who did it.
Anyway, thanks for reminding of this film, got to rewatch it sometime
Please tell me u are going to do a tremors 6 video similar to all the other tremors videos you did!
That story about the smoke..Oh God.
