A young Michael Bay looked at all the explosions at the end of this film and thought to himself, “If I ever become a big-time Hollywood director, all my movies need to have tons of THAT!”
"Megaforce" 's battle scenes were filmed outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, where I live, and I saw "Death Car On The Freeway", when it originally aired when I was in my teens.
i literally almost started crying when i saw barry bostwick on the motorcycle in front of the blue screen...just...majestic. this remains one of my favorite channels on youtube for the editing alone *chef kiss*
I was 13 when megaforce came out. We actually played Megaforce. What we did was we would take off the front reflector and leave the bracket on. Then, we would put a bottle rocket in the hole of the bracket, light the fuse, and ride our bike toward a house of someone we didn't like. The bottle rocket would shoot and blow up next to someone's front door.
I was a movie theater usher at one of my hometown's theaters when Megaforce came out, and I have never seen a more sparsely-attended movie in all the time that I worked there. Open weekend, which featured two evening screenings on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, plus two matinees each on Saturday and Sunday, saw a total of less than twenty people in each evening screening and considerably less than that during the matinees. If memory serves, Megaforce was out of the theater in a little over a week.
Megaforce is kinda like someone made a movie from a janky mid 90s RTS game. Cheesy cutscenes, crazy things like attack bikes and laser buggies and whole armies in just one color.
This does make a better live-action G.I. Joe movie than either "Rise of Cobra" or Retaliation". This has to be some kind of record for explosions. It's enough to make Michael Bay look restrained.
Never saw this movie before, it looks like a big influence for Michael Bay, Power Rangers and the cartoon M.a.s.k. Also, move asside, Steve Rogers 9:47
'Okay Lou, I gotta butch up my image after Rocky Horror...' 'What are you thinkin' Barry? Rambo?' 'Yeah! But dressed like Olivia Newton John's very OUT haidresser.'

If this were given the MST3K treatment, the stinger would be one of three things: 1.) Barry Boswick taking off on his hovercycle, riding it like an 80s supermodel straddling a mechanical bull in a hair metal music video, 2.) Barry hopping off said hoverbike and posing before laughing like a maniac or: 3.) *Persis Khambatta shakes head disapprovingly* Vote now!
my(34 yr old) little sister would have loved absolutely nothing more than a Lisa Frank smokescreen display for her seventh birthday. thank u for that reference.
MST3K fans may also remember that Persis Khambatta was in a film pilloried in one episode of the original series, "Warrior Of The Lost World", and the film's villain, Henry Silva, played Lloyd Wengler, one of the chief villains in "Escape 2000". So, guess Henry left the Bronx after all, even if that film came out a year after "Megaforce".
This was the closest to a live action GI Joe movie that kids got when it came out in 1982. I remember seeing it at the theatre when I was 10 yrs old and loving it, though it has not aged well especially if your a cynical doomsayer.
Does anyone recall the ads for the toys on the back of every comic book back in the day? I’m amazed Lewis didn’t comment on that considering what his schtick is.
When the camera panned over to lewis face and the Babylon 5 clip played I had to pause this for almost three minutes trying to stop laughing... Thank you.
At 3:24, the swedish is amazing. It says "Total traffic chaos, police cars and the smell of burnt rubber follows him in a raging tempo. BANDIT IS BACK!"
Before he was a director, Hal Needham was a stuntman. One of his earlier jobs was doubling for Gary Lockwood in the climactic fight scene at the end of the second Star Trek pilot.
TWO THINGS: 1 - I need to see this hilarity for myself!🏍 2 - Allison, Lewis, have either of you ever seen 'The Wraith' (1986) with Charlie Sheen? I will NOT spoil anything - you have to see it for yourself.🚘🌠🤣
My one defense for this after watching this movie finally is the reason she can't join. In the movie, Hunter only says " you'll throw off the rhythm", instead of "this operation is happening TOMORROW, and adding a sudden addition could throw off the strategy we already made"
I like the costuming and props in this movie. These were probably really impressive at the time and only look goofy in hindsight because of how far we've come. I'm curious what we'll look back on from today in 20-30 years that will look just as silly
Forgot all about this film.. Wow, big hair, skin tight spandex over load. Revolutionary new material at the time, whence a lot of posing from Barry Bostwick😂(oh boy! 😝) Thanks for bringing this forgotten guilty pleasure to my memory banks.
I vaguely remember this movie from my childhood. The scene with the motorcycle flying at the end was what I remember most about the movie. I need to track down a copy of this movie and see it again.
I recall seeing this in the theater and I said “this movie is sooo cool”. My friend asked what part do you like best and I replied “the air conditioning”
I strongly suspect this is where the new GI Joes cartoon/toy line got started, similar to how the 1980 Conan the Barbarian was turned into He Man when it turned out to be a Rated R movie and everyone flailed their arms and said "We can't market a Rated R movie to kids!", so they gave him a new paint job and said "Now he's He-Man!". Look at the first series of toys, they ALL look like they were based on Megaforce. Not to mention Barry Bostwick (the movie lead) played Brad Majors in Rocky Horror.
To be honest, I thought Barry Bostwick looked more like Michael McDonald... I can imagine him singing "I Keep Forgetting" in that husky falsetto with the hairband and the spandex!
If only I had the physique to pull it off I would be right there with you! I could manage to dress like Henry Silva's character but that would be pointless unless I had an Ace Hunter there too...
I'm a simple man. I see Allison cross over with Lewis, I drop everything and click immediately I wish this was still available for purchase on Rifftrax This movie is a work of art. I had to pause for laughter at the Babylon 5 vs Quantum Leap moment, and again at the Lisa Frank/Pride Month smokescreen Please do the thumbs up kiss to Viga and Phelan.I'm sure they'd get the reference LOL "It turns into the end of Grease" It's either that or the Pumaman music " You will believe a man can fly!"
Thank you this is been the best review of megaforce I have ever witnessed One of my favorite 80s cheese, bad movies legend I always thought it would be interesting to see if somebody could remake it
I was 10 when Megaforce came out and 10 year old me loved it! I thought it was the coolest movie ever made. I then watched when I was 20 and I saw how bad and cheesy it was but my nostalgia feels would not go away.
Megaforce: the paramilitary wing of the Bee Gees.
Linkara will never be as big as Megaforce.
It's time for Frampton to come alive ON YOUR ASS!
I met Barry Bostwick at Wizard World a couple of years ago. I even wore my Megaforce tshirt. He was impressed.
A young Michael Bay looked at all the explosions at the end of this film and thought to himself, “If I ever become a big-time Hollywood director, all my movies need to have tons of THAT!”
Allison has to resist referencing the Leap, Lewis can't stop relating things to Babylon 5. It's a nerd macaron.
One of my favorite moments
Barry Bostwick and Henry Silva have more romantic chemistry in this movie than most movie couples, even if they're married couples.
So the premise of Megaforce is "What if Brad had given in to Dr. Frankenfurter and then founded a paramilitary organization?"
I love that this seems so dorky and endearing, it's like someone made a store brand GI Joe movie, but in the best way.
That's what I call a MegaWin.
I see what you did there
"Megaforce" 's battle scenes were filmed outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, where I live, and I saw "Death Car On The Freeway", when it originally aired when I was in my teens.
Oh, and the name of the actor who played the secondary male lead character(the one with the Confederate flag on his uniform)is Michael Beck.
I wonder whether there’s any overlap in locations between this film and Neil Breen’s…
i literally almost started crying when i saw barry bostwick on the motorcycle in front of the blue screen...just...majestic. this remains one of my favorite channels on youtube for the editing alone *chef kiss*

Thanks for that explosion supercut.
With all the CGI blasts this year, it's refreshing to see actual effects.

Oh wow, the two of you together works really well! Hopefully you can do some more stuff together, it's great!
This explosion-packed masterpiece is about to be 40 years old in just a few days and I AM HERE FOR IT. Thanks for the epic review, Allison! Love it.

So... this _is_ an obscure movie?
Seeing Lewis sans glasses in the thumbnail made me think this would be a crossover with 90s kid.
This worked better.
80s kid.
The spandex costumes in this movie leave NOTHING to the imagination.
What else would you expect from Brad Majors?
And the one person who should be wearing it ISN’T. So much damn male moose knuckle!
It's like he's wearing nothin' at all, nothin' at all, nothin' at all....

I suspect the unsold toys were repainted and sold as GI Joe.
Yeah first movie was horrid....Retaliation at least had the Rock and Bruce and a sad wasted Brendan Fraiser cameo
God that intro is so cool 😃
It's pretty clear that the makers of Megaforce were trying to create sort of a live-action GI Joe franchise.
R.I.P. Persis Khambatta
Finally I understand the joke from History of Power Rangers~
Watching this is giving me flashbacks to Team America: World Police and I am loving it.
Never saw this movie before, it looks like a big influence for Michael Bay, Power Rangers and the cartoon M.a.s.k.

Megaforce: the movie the hit song is based off
'Okay Lou, I gotta butch up my image after Rocky Horror...'
'What are you thinkin' Barry? Rambo?'
'Yeah! But dressed like Olivia Newton John's very OUT haidresser.'
Wait, so this is basically a GI Joe movie that existed before GI Joe!
Bout time Lewis joined on the Movie Nights fun. Hope he could appear in some podcasts too, if his schedule allows it.
LaNoLaCola Don't they live in the same area?
Barry Bostwick in this looks like a cross between Travolta in Staying Alive and Jesus H. Christ.

I wish there was enough time for the entire bike scene to be the stinger. I guess it'd have to be just the dismount.

The Rifftrax for this is amazing BTW
I love how this is just as much a riff on the movie as it is the people riffing on the movie
""Are we, though?" I SO wanted Allison to say 'Hmm, I don't know, I think we should be enemies...'

"They thought this was really cool" YES! It WAS really cool! This movie is the reason motion pictures exist. It's glorious, dumb, mindless fun.
It certainly was a mega force.
I love this channel, and I was wondering when you would review Megaforce and I wasnt disappointed, and a collaboration no less? Awsome.
Top Gun is now the second most homoerotic military fiction/drama.
Megaforce is the movie that for years I kept mixing up with Delta Force.
Ditto.
It wasn't until we got to the flying motorcycle here that I realized I had seen this movie and that it wasn't Delta Force, ha.
It's what Delta Force wishes it was...I cant believe I just said that...but it's TRUE.
Lee Marvin in a beige spandex jumpsuit...

I just rewatched this crossover again after rewatching Megaforce. This is still one of favourite crossovers and Megaforce is still awesome.
Rewatching because it is fun. decided to check. That is two full minutes of gorgeous explosions. That is beautiful.
C. Robert Cargill, writer of Doctor Strange among other things, is officially a Commander of Megaforce.
Aw man. I love the positive energy whenever you and Lewis do a video together. Friendship goals.
