Just read what the gospels said about the Jews, with Luke being the worst. Starting in Lk 23:24: "24 The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted. 25 So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished." In the next several verses Luke has *the Jews* lead out Jesus and crucify him. It's only later that the Roman soldiers even show up! (verse 36) This is just pure insanity!!! Even more so once you learned that Roman execution crosses are three dimensional, and crucified by penetration, not just holding in place with nails, and contrast with what Leviticus has to say about the like. They were basically structurally male assemblies modelled after Priapus! Of course the Christians had to lie about that too.

Great historical lecture. Rabbi Tovia is correct it was inconvenient for early church to have the Ebionites around so the church crushed them early as they could, as they did to the Arian church and many other subgroups deemed a thorn on the side of the patristic church's trinitarian orthodox doctrine. Ironically Bar Kochba persecuted the Ebionites as well, mainly cause they did not fight at his side against Rome or accept his messianic claims.

The Essenes are listed in Epiphanius “Panarion”. They are among 80 sects he includes as committing heresies. The Ebionites are listed as well. He wrote this in the late 4th Century. You don’t include dead people in a list of active heretical Christian sects. The Ebionites are listed as well and in that section Ebionites hold that Paul was of a Greek mother and father, wanted to marry Popea, a daughter of Caiaphas, adopted Judaism, was circumcised and rejected by the girl. On reading it, I wondered if Caiaphas was created later as a villain and the whole Christ trial & execution was entirely a Roman deal. Maybe it was just Pilate & Paul who knew Mark gave him the story. Mark is supposedly a disciple of Peter but there is no mention of them together. Barnabas, his uncle, is linked to Peter and only vaguely.

It appears that Jesus was a Jew from the Middle East and he was an outstanding person and teacher of Jewish law. And little did he had to do anything about Christianity. I think Mr. Paul infused Jewish monotheism with Roman paganism to attract the pagans to his cult. It's my humble opinion, not to offend anyone but to encourage critical thinking.

    • @youngknowledgeseeker
      @youngknowledgeseeker 3 роки тому +2

He definitely had a lot to do with Christianity. Also what infusion did Paul put? All Paul advocated was that Gentiles do not have to keep the “works” of the Mosaic law. What we would call the “ceremonial” law today. Circumcision, Sabbaths, Sacrifices, Food observances etc. The “moral” law stood firm and was expanded on by Jesus and was preached by Paul. Non of this nonsense of “faith alone” saves, Paul never in his wildest dreams thought faith was merely mental affirmation of Jesus, faith was intertwined with works for him just not “works of the law”.

I believe Jesus was a Jew and firmly rooted in the Jewish faith and culture. When asked by the disciples " who should lead when you have gone?" he told them go to my brother James, he will be your leader. There was no question of creating a new religion. The majority of Jesus's followers were all Jews and would go on to follow their religion. Their leader was a Jew who followed the laws of Judaism, there wasn't any need to change. It is likely that they held him to be a Messiah but at the same time fully human.

      Specifically....From the Clementine Literature...
Homily Book 3: Chapter 47: The foreknowledge of Moses.
To this Peter answered; “The Torah of God was given by Moses, without writing, to seventy wise men, to be handed down, so that the government might be carried on by succession. But after Moses was taken up, it was written down by someone, but not by Moses. For in the law itself, it is written; “And Moses died, and they buried him near the house of Phogor, and no one knows his sepulcher till this day.” But how could Moses write that Moses died? And after about 500 years or thereabouts after the time after Moses, it was found lying in the temple which was built, and after another 500 years, it was carried away, and being burnt in the time of Nebuchadnezzar it was destroyed, and thus being written after Moses, and often lost, even this shows the foreknowledge of Moses, because he, foreseeing its disappearance, did not write it, but those who wrote it, being convicted of ignorance through their not foreseeing its disappearance, were not prophets.”
This is the very same reason that there are no books written by Jesus.

My reply: I agree with that statement.
You said: "Ebionite was a derogatory term for the true disciples who were neither Jews or Christians".
My reply: I will disagree with that somewhat. Ebionites were true Jews as being part of the Nazarene sect of Judaism (Nazarenes being one of the 7 sects of Judaism at the time of the Apostles). Epiphanius in the Panarion (as you may already know) goes into detail on both.

@@thenazareneperspective2734 Good points ! But re your last para:
Some were indeed Yehudim, but clearly not all, as some may have been either from other dispersed lost tribes (thus not of Judah/Yehudim) and or Roman, and or gentile converts. So in that sense they were not ‘all Jews’ and we should be more accurate.
Whilst they were indeed one of the sects in those days, I do not consider them part of Judaism either (which is a different religion) as they did not read just the 24 ‘public’ books of the Jewish Tanahk “for the worthy and the unworthy” but also read and knew the 70 ‘hidden’ books “for the wise amongst the people”held exclusively at the 2nd temple, with 2 copies at Alexandria, plus the scroll copies at Dameshek/Qumran.
Hence Mat 22:23 and Mark 12:18 Messiah castigating them for not knowing the scripture of Toviyahu (which was one of the hidden 70)
Thus they were not an offshoot of Judah-ism, which conducted animal sacrifice and it is more the case that Judaism was the one departing from the ancient Hebraic truth as recorded by Jude in 41ad “go back to the faith once delivered unto the Patriarchs” ie go and read ALL 94 Hebrew books not just the 24 which Rome later recounted as the OT39.
Equally I would disagree with the term ‘apostles’ which was first introduced and first stated by ha Satan that he would “send HIS apostles to deceive mankind” where by contrast Yeshua had ‘disciples’ who followed his teaching to the very letter, not make up their own doctrine and version of the truth
These 2 terms have of course been muddled up, misused and mistranslated ever since…..
Ebionites was a derogatory term for the vegetable eating Tzadokite Issayim, Essenoi (Greek) Essene (English) who did not eat dead flesh, conduct animal sacrifice and read ALL the 94 Hebrew scriptures not just the 24 public books, some with Greek names.
But don’t worry 2Ws are coming soon to correct this mess. Blessings

Very interesting. I want to dig up and read all the early Christian writings I can. I want to find out for myself just how reflective the Ebionites were of James and the early church. Because I find it hard to believe that the early church, as a whole, including their pillars (James, Peter, etc) denounced Paul and yet we just have absolutely almost no record of it. Obviously some people are just going to comment “oh because they just buried an destroyed all the letters opposing him”, I mean...maybe...but boy will the evidence need to be there for that.
In Acts and Galatians we do see that there were 100% Jews who HATED Paul, and disagreed with him, but never ALL of them and never the major leading figures like James or Peter. However this is merely one account and one arguably biased toward Paul. I am wondering just how solidly scholars think the Ebionites represent in full “original” Christianity...
Edit: In the same way, generally, people don't think Marcion represented Paul, I hesitate to let the Ebionites represent James.

I think it was in the Pseudo Clementines or the Homilies where Peter is on record of reading Paul the riot act after Paul "opposed Peter to his face."
And in Acts James has Paul pay for the fulfillment of some brothers' vows and he starts out fully compliant, but then we hear of Paul bringing a gentile into the Jews only area of the Temple, Paul is evicted and excommunicated, and the Romans have to save him from an angry mob. We hear nothing of James after that. I wonder why? 🤔

Peter and James never agreed with Paul who led people astray onto the false wide path which is only realised once the truth is understood. Paulicans will also suffer in the tribulation as they have no defence mechanism

Kudos Rabbi Singer, a very good & truthful synopsis of the Ebionites. One small point maybe I disagree with: many if not most historians have come to the conclusion that early on the Ebionites & Nazarenes were the same group only divided by location. Later on they split over the virgin birth issue, the Nazarenes adopted the Orthodox belief whereas the Ebionites maintained a strictly adoptionist Christology.

That's right. I would go so far as to say that the Nazarenes of later times were not the nazarenes of the first century. Acts says Paul was a "ringleader" of the nazarene sect. The nazarenes were originally probably, gentiles and hellenist jews. Ebionites were closer to the truth.

There were Ebionites who accepted the Virgin birth. These were the true ones that were in Arabia that the Prophet Muhammad's wife Khadijah belonged.:

THE FORMATION OF THE EARLY CHURCH by Jostein Adna
(The Ebionites Use of the Gospel of the Hebrews) - Page 269
Following Origen(Cels 5:61) Eusebius makes a distinction between the two kinds of Ebionites: One group denied the virgin birth and others did not. When describing the latter group Eusebius notes that, despite the fact that they accepted the Virgin Birth, they were still heretics especially because they were zealous in observing the law and because they rejected the letters of Paul, calling him Apostate.....

A lot of Jews felt that being high priest was a life time appointment and did not accept the Romans appointment of a replacement. In effect, there were two high priests. This situation had to be awkward. Let me add that even though a High Priest wanted the execution of Jesus, there is an littleun mentioned text of the Clementine who lived in Rome and is sometimes thought of as a early Pope. When asked by Christians if they can do sacrifices, he told them that if you really wanted to do them, then arrange for the High Priest in Jerusalem to sacrifice a dove for you. The answer would be ROME and it's pagan beliefs. It's very sad that Christians do not know their own history, if they did, most would not be Christian today, but those described as the "strangers" in Isaiah 56 who take hold of His (the Most High's) covenant and join themselves to the Most High (most also do not even know what the covenant is).

Somehow, I suspect that Ignatius of Antioch and the other Apostolic Fathers would disagree that the Ebionites were the first Christians. They certainly were the first heretics being a continuation of the Judaizer faction that disagreed with the counsel of Jerusalem in Acts 15. I do agree that Christianity is a leap from Judaism as Christ said on another topic, "Mark 2:22, And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. Instead, new wine is poured into new wineskins."

Please people think a little bit. The concept of Messiah is a JEWISH concept it comes from a Hebrew word Mashiach and it has clear conditions for someone to be the Messiah, that person needs to meet ALL of those conditions . You can not just come and completely destroy that and re-invent the concept and say Jesus was the Messiah just because Christianity says so. Jesus does not meet ANY of the requirements. Please look it up . As much as it may frustrate Christians, Jesus was JEW he was not a Christian , he never was and he never will be and so you can't interpret who Messiah was, based on Christian interpretations. That's like someone coming and inventing a sandwich and calling it "pizza" and saying that pizza is now going to be a sandwich going forward, No, it simply isn't. Otherwise, nothing would make sense, anyone could come up with any idea and change all definitions of things and there would be chaos... Please look up what Messiah conditions have to be met in Judaism, learn something and not just follow up like sheep what they tell you. It is unreal to me that Christians venerate a Jew as their God , yet know NOTHING about Judaism

The entire New Testament canon was formulated by followers of Paul - the self declared ‘13th apostle’
The Book of Acts was most probably written by the physician of Paul so is NOT an impartial account of events as the writer is Paul’s friend writing THEIR side of the story.
It’s funny how all the epistles of Paul survived but none of the detailed writings of James the Just and his followers and any writings of the original apostles have survived.
The 4 gospel authors are unknown and written in the 3rd person (non eyewitness accounts). And a lot of the letters and books of the New Testament have been forged under names of apostles by other authors as Bart Ehrman has clearly proved in his book ‘Forged’
It’s a shame Jesus was such a poor incompetent teacher during his ministry that he had to return in a vision to a brute of a Jew who was killing Christians 5 minutes ago - and then appoint him the ‘13th apostle’ after his ascension to heaven and make this 13th apostle author the majority of the New Testament 🤔
"For the moment my only belief is that nothing ought to be believed with-out good reason, and that what is believed without good reason is that which is believed without knowledge of its origin: and I must with the best of reasons approach this inquiry with uneasiness when I find one affirmed to be an apostle [Paul], of whom in the list of the apostles in the gospel I find no trace. So when I am told that he was subsequently promoted by our Lord, by now at rest in heaven, I find some lack of foresight in the fact that Christ did not know beforehand that he would have need of him, but after setting in order the office of apostleship and sending them out upon their duties, considered it necessary, on an impulse and not by deliberation, to add another, by compulsion so to speak and not by design" - Tertullian

So All the 'heresies' of people denying Jesus's divinity kept coming and regularly resurfacing from the actual areas where Jesus lived and preached and walked and the Holy Land (Syria/Palestine) and all the 'pure' teachings of Jesus were rigrouously defended and remained in Rome and Europe with the Gentiles??? This is totally absurd!
John Toland comments on this unsettling predicament in his book 'The Nazarenes'
“Since the Nazarenes or Ebionites are by ALL the church historians unanimously acknowledged to have been the first Christians, or those who believed in Christ among the Jews with which, his own people, he lived and died, they having been the witness of his actions, and of whom were ALL the Apostles, considering this, I say how was it possible for them to be the first out of all others (for they were the first to be made heretics), who should form wrong conceptions of the doctrines and designs of Jesus?
And how did the Gentiles who believed in Jesus much later after his death by the preachings of persons that never knew him get truer notions of these things, and where could they have got their information from if not from these believing Jews (Nazarenes)?”
      - John Toland - ‘The Nazarenes’
My response to the above statement: Yes! Exactly! From where indeed????

James the brother of the lord in his writings says his father Joseph, was a widow and was 84 and Mary was 14 and that he was not the father of Jesus. His sons James, Jude, John etc were then older sons from his first marriage and not the direct blood brothers of Jesus.
Jesus never said he was God. So much has been added and changed its often difficult to know, but James was the leader of the early church and would have know the truth more than anyone being directly involved.
Ebionites believed the 10 Commandments of God were valid forever, but not the laws of Moses which had been fulfilled, some also followed the Nazerite Law.

The Ebionites and their messiah were Jews.
Why do you and others refer to the Ebionites as Christians?
The Ebionites were established before one of the first Jewish-Christian schisms initiated by Simon Magus (the human basis of the Saul/Paul character).
But that was not a radical break.
Magus' dogma applied god-fearer Torah to non-Jew Greeks who awaited the second coming of the Ebionites' Jewish messiah.

In essence, they consider Jesus to be a righteous man who taught Scripture well, and believe that he will return as the Messiah instead of some unknown man filling that role. But practically, they are Jews. They go to an orthodox synagogue, wear tefillin, etc. Although I myself am unconverted (but lean much more toward Judaism that Christianity), I can't say if Jews accept them as Jewish, but from what I've seen, they are accepted.

    Concerning the Ebionites Hippolytus says:
"The Ebionites, however, acknowledge that the world was made by Him Who is in reality God, but they propound legends concerning the Christ similarly with Cerinthus and Carpocrates. They live conformably to the customs of the Jews, alleging that they are justified according to the law, and saying that Jesus was justified by fulfilling the law. And therefore it was, (according to the Ebionites,) that (the Saviour) was named (the) Christ of God and Jesus, since not one of the rest (of mankind) had observed completely the law. For if even any other had fulfilled the commandments (contained) in the law, he would have been that Christ. And the (Ebionites allege) that they themselves also, when in like manner they fulfil (the law), are able to become Christs; for they assert that our Lord Himself was a man in a like sense with all (the rest of the human family) (Ἐβιωναῖοι δὲ ὁμολογοῦσι τὸν κόσμον ὑπὸ τοῦ ὄντως θεοῦ γεγονέναι· τὰ δὲ περὶ τὸν Χριστὸν ὁμοίως τῷ Κηρίνθῳ καὶ Καρποκράτει μυθεύουσιν. 1) They believed that Jesus was ordained/adopted as the Son of God at his baptism.
      2) They were vegetarians (some historians speculate that they believed that the Roman pagans were tainting the meat and making it not kosher just by being around).
      3) They followed the Torah, unlike Pauline Christians, and insisted that gentile converts follow the Torah.
      4) They believed that Jesus had come to put an end to the sacrifice/sin offering system, but not necessarily any other stuff.

I think that his protest on sin offerings has more to do with who was doing the sacrifices than the sacrifices itself. Jesus appears to uphold a local ethos that was shared by other galileans, that the religious system imposed by Hycanus was corrupted, this appears to be the POV of the essenes also. Although this early Jewish-Christian sect of the Ebonites (circa. early 1st-2nd C.E.) was considered heretical, and their teachings on certain aspects have certainly deviated from pure Christian doctrine, what they said about Christ as an Angel is corroborative evidence of the antiquity of this tradition and teaching going back to the Earliest Christians and to the Jews themselves, as confirmed by writings among the DSS or Dead Sea Scrolls and Philo Judaeus.
Here is what Epiphanius had to say on what they taught in this regard:
GREEK TEXT: “...καὶ [16.] MPG.)
EPIPHANIUS OF SALAMIS (circa. 310-403 C.E.): “...And on this account they say that Jesus was begotten of the seed of a man, and was chosen; and so by the choice of God he was called the Son of God from the Christ that came into him from above in the likeness of a dove. And they deny that he was begotten of God the Father, but say that he was created as one of the archangels, yet greater, and that he is Lord of the angels and of all things made by the Almighty...” - (Pages 8-10, Panarion 30.16,4-5; Montague Rhode James in The Apocryphal New Testament, Oxford: Clarendon Press 1924)
EPIPHANIUS OF SALAMIS (circa. 310-403 C.E.): “...They say that Christ was not begotten of God the Father, but created as one of the archangels ... that he rules over the angels and all the creatures of the Almighty...” - (Panarion 30.16,4-5; The Nazarenes of Mount Carmel Copyright © 1999-2006.)

I'm not sure if I can submit a question here or if you have already made material that'll answer my question.
My question is how on Earth is it possible for Jacob and Rebecca to knowingly try to deceive and you search the blessings from Isaac to Esau? And if the intention of Isaac was to give the blessing 2 Esau then wouldn't it be binding on Esau in the first place? And why would God allow this blessing to be usurped unjustly? And when I read this I wanted to pull my hair out because it was so confusing

    • @brazilianman92
      @brazilianman92 6 років тому

Isa Hakim everything that happens is G-d's will. So if Jacob usurped the blessing. That was intended to happen. There is no such thing as "good or bad or unjust". There are the laws of G-d and his will. If G-d allows it to happen then it serves a purpose. There are only events that serve the one. The moment you try to override your own will to an event. Such as "why did this happen? or why would G-d allow this?" That's your prerogative attempting to control the great will. You will never control the one. That's why Xhistians failed and why their cult is dying. Trying to hijack G-d's will never work. The one will do as he wishes and you're just here for the ride.

Madson Barbosa Filho I think you misunderstand my point. I I mean Muslim so hopefully I don't sound too arrogant in saying this but I understand the concept of even if you take every step correctly and do everything in your capacity to make something happen if it's not written for you by Allah then it is what it is. My point here is the idiocy of the story. So it says that Rebecca put sheepskin on Jacob. Not only that but you mean to tell me that Isaac one of the most important Prophets in history you mean to tell me that he couldn't recognize the voice of his own son? And he couldn't tell the difference between human hair and sheep's wool? So what we see is this theme in the Bible where it seems like someone was trying to rewrite history. For example it smile is the first born of Abraham and while he receives a promise or blessing from God that does not include the promise of Israel or the promised land Palestine whatever you want to call it. But here's my thing the promise that was made to Abraham was specifically for his descendants so how then do you prove that you are included in this promise? Because the promise of the land or the Covenant that God made with Abraham it's very specific and it does not say that people who adhere to the Jewish religion will be entitled to this land promise or Covenant it says that specifically the descendants of Abraham is who the Covenant is made with. So even if you can trace your genealogy to a Semitic people it doesn't even necessarily mean that Georgia sending of Abraham specifically. And Arabs have the Blood of Abraham so how would you know if your genealogy is not from you know parts of Abraham's family that the promise is not included for? It's too much fukery for me and not enough sensible reasonable logical answers

    • @Forevertheprophecy
      @Forevertheprophecy 6 років тому

Madson Barbosa Filho so in short I'm challenging the authenticity of the story. And how can I look at people who are supposed to be prophets of God and you know look up to their example or you know trust them to be honest when over and over again there's nothing but stories of them you know engaged in treacherous deceitful disgusting behavior these aren't Role Models these aren't people to take Knowledge from you can't even trust them to be you no honorable to their own family or brothers or whatever it is they're all killing each other and deceiving each other for power and land and worldly things

    • @brazilianman92
      @brazilianman92 6 років тому +2

Isa Hakim Alright you made a lot of strange claims. So ill do my best to make it simple. A: Abraham was old and dying. So he was not of his senses. G-d let the blessing go to Jacob and he was his mother's favorite. In Judaism mothers are the gate through which you are made Jewish. You're adding gentile aspects to how the story "should go" in your mind. You claim to be a Muslim which makes you doing that very strange. Arabic/ Muslim history is full of aspects very similar to Judaism and have very little to do with the gentile world. Arabs and Muslims betrayed each other constantly. The Caliphates waged war on each other. The Turks conquered the Arabs. The Sunnis and Shia constantly genocide and betray each other etc etc etc. Your concept of "just" sounds like cartoon justice. Which is child like justice that assumes life goes as you think it should. Rather then how G-d made it so. B: you assault holy texts for being stupid and illogical. Which is asinine at best. Both Xhistianity and Islam are forged on Torah being 100% true. The difference between both is that Xhistians see Yoshke as G-d and discredit Muhammad and Islam. Islam sees Yoshke as a prophet and discredits the saints and disbelieve Xhistians. Both believe Torah is divine and unaltered. Both see Torah as the word of G-d. If you go the atheist route and claim Torah is false or altered you simply do not believe abrahamic faiths. Because if Torah is false then all Abrahamic faiths fall apart. So that stance is nonsensical. Im postulating these points on basic logic and theological credit. All religions are full of people with "dark" aspects. All humans have yetzer hara. A smart individual would take advice from a person with wordly experience. People who wear holiness often do it for appearance sakes. Jews have struggled with G-d since weve come onto the earth. All humans struggle with yetzer hara. You're no saint yourself and likely have done a large list of sins. No one is perfect as only G-d is perfection. We follow our laws and do our best to strive for holiness. Yet we don't shy away from the gritty and dark details of our history. So you have to explain yourself in way where you don't sound like a wishy washy child. Im being blunt with you because you claim to be a Muslim. Ishmael is my kin so his covenant does matter to me as a Jew. If a Muslim claims silly talking points it irks me. Because it shames Ishmael.

    • @brazilianman92
      @brazilianman92 6 років тому +1

Isa Hakim Ishmael was promised a great nation. He and his seed fulfilled this. The Muslims destroyed Rome and Persia. The ummayyds conquered large parts of Rome. The Islamic empires were bigger then european ones. Muslims today are a massive nation of peoples. Ishmael was given his own covenant and progeny. This happened for him. The land of Israel is promised to the Jewish people. Although at times Muslims have freed israel from foreign usurpers. Such the first jihad done by Muhammad's ummah and salahin's conquest of the kingdom of Jerusalem. If you read history without emotions and stop trying to hijack G-d's will it makes a lot more sense. Children cry when the baby gazelle gets eaten by the lion on national geographic. They throw a tantrum and ask their parents to change it. As if their will should stop nature itself from taking its course. This is why I said to consider child like visions of "what should be". I'm sure many Xhistians cried asking for Muslims not to conquer and butcher them. Yet that was G-d's will. Just like the vise versa happening today from western armies. G-d's will happens weather you find it fair or not. Moses didn't even get to see Israel. Jews dealt with 2000 years of persecution from Xhistians. So your idea of "fair" just isnt realistic. The world has no such thing. It's all G-d's will. The same as how Hasatan is an agent of G-d. All serve the one.

Before I even comment here...I'm going to remind perhaps even Tovia of the story of Gameliel II and Ima Shalom, which I loosely call "the Ass Kicked over the Lamp."
That particular Talmudic passage points out one thing about anything called an "Evangelion." That the "Evangelion" originated ONLY after the Second Temple was destroyed...at a time when the Galut had started. The philosopher judge that Gameliel II and Ima Shalom are talking to is indicative of the reality of that post-2nd Temple destruction time...of Samaritans and Hellenicists and a few others being in positions of authority under the Romans.
I don't consider "the dude from Nazareth" version of Jesus to even have been heard of at that particular moment. Clearly there wasn't one in 40-50 c.e. when Philo died...and Philo was BIG on the ideas that were woven into very early ChrEstianity/Christianity. "Dude from Nazareth" is noticeably absent from Philo's works, though you could find a conceptual Logos and aleph-yod-shin in Philo's works.
There's a LOT of different/new material that crops up around mid-2nd century. All of a sudden, even a "birth story". Tales of various apostles, too. Before Acts. Even one called The Acts of Paul/Acts of Paul and Thecla...though THAT one was clearly caught out as a fable.
So yes, we DO hear of "Ebionites," but they're a bit weird to get a handle on. And...there's a bit of an association with the Clementine literature where James the Just is leader of a Jerusalem-based church and where "Paul" is akin to Simon Magus.
Except...practically ALL mentions even of James the Just seem to crop up exactly around that same mid-2nd century period...in Hegessipus and Hegessipus-influenced copies of Josephus, Protevengelion of James, even whatever was the precursor of Acts.
It's also a period where we've got someone claiming to be a student of "John" while being a bit narky at "Mark" or "Marcion.
But thankfully we have an independent source, outside of the various ChrEstian/Christian groups of the time who tells us a bit more of the mid-2nd century dude writing so much stuff...under Death of Peregrinus Proteus. There's a forger/huckster from Parium with a lot of aliases, who apparently IS the person the "saints" Ignatius and Polycarp are drawn from.
This idiot from Parium only even enters Iudea between Kitos and Bar Kochba. So...that's the earliest you would have even REALLY had "Christians" of the "i"-spelling. NOT before.
Definitely, then, the "Ebionites" are not REAL. Not if they're working on what this fool from Parium was writing about a "James the Just."
And...the second century material is NOT as identical to a 70 c.e. Evangelion as people think.
For starters, the original Greek meaning of Evangelion. "Good News of a Military Victory." Good news ONLY to the groups BENEFITTING from a Roman win. Something written/proclaimed by a King (a last one) with FLAVIAN blessing. A first writer who was actually educated, rich and a king, who had a Mark in his name. There I'll draw on both Talmud references to Herod Agrippa for further detail.
So...the mid-2nd century forger-huckster adds a LOT of material. Though it's still decades before Irenaeus and the new proto-Catholics take forging one step further.
One of the things this forger/huckster writes is Protevangelion of James. In essence the FIRST birth story Jesus. The title itself tells us something...that it's meant to be a "prequel" to the Evangelion. If we used Star Trek analogies...if a 70 c.e. Evangelion was "Star Trek the Original Series," then Protevangelion of James would be Star Trek Enterprise...and a 190 c.e. Matthew and Luke would be Star Trek Discovery. Now...this still makes Protevangelion LATER than the original Evangelion no matter WHAT Protevangelion of James purports to be. One thing that obviously seems to have been missing in the original Evangelion was any "birth story" for its ISU character. That makes sense, because the "god/angel/allegory" ISU/Jesus came BEFORE "dude from Nazareth."
And around 190 c.e., Irenaeus brings in Matthew and Luke birth stories. With Gospel of Luke having NO real existence before Irenaeus.
So..."Ebionites" arise from the second-century huckster/forger's material. He was pretty big around Syriac areas...and obviously had fans picking different aspects of his forging.
Why did this mid-2nd century forger/huckster have any spleen to vent at BOTH Mark AND Paul? Well, I think he actually knew "Paul" was really Mark, as groups BEFORE Irenaeus were aware, but just didn't tell many people. This huckster/forger, according to Death of Peregrinus Proteus, was BOOTED from a Chrestian/Christian group. From "Ebionites?" Let's get real...nope. From an EARLIER form of ChrEstianity that had been around since 70 c.e. One arising from Samaritan/Hellenicist/Herodian origins...where the active name was "Mark/Marqe.
Irenaeus tells us that his "teacher," who he calls Polycarp, was asked "Recognise US, Poycarp." That's a distortion of an earlier, ChrEstian/Gnostic "orthodoxy" that the idiot from Parium was eventually booted from.
From that time, the twerp from Parium wasn't big on Mark...and if he knew Mark was who Paul REALLY was...eventually the idiot from Parium would have laid the foundations of the "Paul" we're MORE familiar with, but who also has a ridiculous origin point in Tarsus.
I know Tovia deals with the scholarship on this whole subject...but I prefer digging UNDER the "established" story of Christianity, since it's full of post-190 c.e. Irenaean distortions of just about everything.
And I tossed out "Simon Magus" stuff ages ago, because it's a huge misdirection.
Samaritans don't KNOW a Simon Magus. The really ACTIVE name for them has been..."MARQE. Mark. Likewise, the COPTS think Peter took away from Mark THE apostle's glory.
Two groups ESPECIALLY hit by the Commodus-era appearance of Irenaeus...who, by his own admission, was tied to the Imperial Household. It's quite interesting that the progenitor of Irenaeus' group was that mid-2nd century forger huckster.
And...since one of the hucker/forger's aliases was Hegessipus...think for a minute what that means to Josephan studies. We have a forger/huckster in the mid-2nd century, around the Tenth of Antoninus, 147 c.e., effectively making out he's a new Josephus. Hegesippus is where we get ideas of "christians" spelt with an "i" supposedly fleeing to Petra or even existing prior to 70 c.e. Hegessipus is the one trying to tell us of a Jerusalem church initially run by a "family of Jesus." Weirdly, the names "Hegessipus" used for that could have been taken wholesale from the Herodian family tree.
Seriously...a LOT didn't exist in the "christian" side of the subject till around the end of that Kitos/Bar Kochba period.
Go back BEFORE Kitos and you only have "the Good" in Roman/Flavian eyes, the Samaritans, the Hellenicist-Jews, the Greeks, and up to 100 c.e., Herod Agrippa.
Curious that the idea to make a Jewish-SEEMING branch of Christians only really cropped up AFTER Celsus had said something in his more CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms of the ChrEstian groups he was aware of before Irenaeus came into the picture.
Even there..."Ebionites" really didn't exist till someone wrote of them mid-2nd century...same as "dude from Nazareth" Jesus didn't exist until the second century either.
That will be one thing I'll have to respectfully disagree with Tovia about.
