- This video is a TRUE coloring tutorial, my first - I actually TALK to the camera, there are float-y, informative title cards (and it's added information to what I am teaching you), and it is long enough to help you learn the ins and outs of using petroleum jelly with your inexpensive colored pencils (a super fun technique!)! This video is a companion to a full tutorial found on my website havecolorwilltravel.com.

That’s a great tip. I use simple coloring pencils and will definitely give this a try. Thank you 😊
You are most welcome! It actually works best with Crayola brand colored pencils I find, but give it a go with whatever you have! Makes creating color gradients a breeze!
Thanks. Yes I recently started coloring and I just use my kids crayola pencils. Many times it takes lot of effort with coloring and even causes my fingers to ache. So I was very happy to find this trick. 🥰
Oh my goodness-I am totally familiar with this pain! And you are correct-Vaseline absolutely helps with coloring hand fatigue quite a lot! Artist grade colored pencils create deeply saturated color lay downs with much less hand pressure and I’ve written reviews on a variety of them on my blog. Visit my website ( www.havecolorwilltravel.com/ ) and type colored pencils into the search bar and all that info will pop up!
Wow. You have a wonderful blog. Thanks for sharing the link. 😊🌷

Can you please make a video on how to use the Crayola colored pencils and to shade with them while useing vaseline.
This is amazing I have arthritis in my hands and have had to give up using pencils. I can not wait to see if this allows me to colour again.
I do hope it allows you to enjoy creating coloring art again!!💚
I have scleroderma and I might try this too.
Hope you find you’re able to color with this technique💚
I'm disabled and have a lot of pain in my hands, I'm trying this too! I hope it works for you :)
Me too!!
I never met you and I don't know who you are, but you have the same voice, spirit and pretty handwriting of that one nice, smart girl who sat in the corner desk of the third grade who helped me out and showed me how to do the art part of my homework assignment. At some point in all of our lives, we've all had that same girl in corner desk show it to us. Thank you for reminding me of her.
What a lovely compliment-thank you for sharing your story💚
That is super sweet.
Awww, thats so special. Thank you for sharing.
You just saved me a lot of money. I really love coloring, especially since my husband was at the hospital, I found it very relaxing and helpful for me, in order to be able to function in some what normal way.. I spent some money and then some more, on pencils and still not being able to get the colors I wanted. Absolutely going to try it
Hope you find it a useful trick:) Putting a little spoonful of the pj into a tiny flat container should help you take this art technique to wherever it is you find coloring the most helpful for you💚
This is great tip! (Pun intended) Thanks for sharing this. I'm disabled and have a ton of hand pain when I color with heavy pressure, can't wait to try this technique. You're the best, and should talk in your videos more since you're pleasant to listen to and funny.
Thank you so much for those kind words!💚
I do color pencil art in my spare time.
I legit blew on my screen out of instinct when I saw the pencil dust on the paper and then you immediately blew it off the paper in the video.
Cracked me up.
😂😂😂
Now that's what I call virtual reality! Hilarious! 😀
Thank you so much for this. My daughter has severe arthritis but is a fabulous artist and now does not draw as much due to the pain. This will be a HUGE help for her.
You are so welcome! Hope she finds some ability to return to her art!💚
I have no idea why this popped up in my recommendations, haven't watched an art/craft video in ages even though i have quite a bit before now. I wish i'd known about this sooner (I'm 65, the kid still in me would have loved it, lol), it's such a great idea & looks like fun. When you showed Eric's piece, vibrancy is exactly the word that immediately came into my head. Thanks muchly for showing (& telling, lol).
My pleasure! I will tell Steve you liked his coloring art:)
@@HaveColorWillTravel Oh yes, please tell him.
I used unscented dye free baby oil. (Aka just mineral oil) for blending and it's amazing
I’ve been meaning to explore baby oil with my wax based art supplies…but its messiness factor has kept me from diving in. Someday…🤓
If you use grease pencils (the waxy type that are sharpened by untwirling a narrow strip of paper), you can perform a similar trick by dipping the end into odorless paint thinner. It partially dissolves the wax, and lets it smear further, with more brilliant color.
Cool to know-thanks for sharing!
@RA Thanks, china markers (aka grease pencils) come in a limited range of colors but this is a great tip for times when you want a background that’s either a single color or limited colors.
@@63artemisia63 Fun tips, can't wait to try all of these!
This seems like a great trick for blending! Especially with skin tones and black and white drawings. I have the hardest time with blending a lot of times. How have I never seen or heard about this? Tysm 😊
You’re most welcome!💚
I love oil pastels and this makes a great alternative that I can travel with.
Absolutely! Have fun with it🤓
Michelle, I just discovered this video of yours, and immediately subscribed after watching it, what a cool coloring trick!
I had a stroke almost 10 years ago, (I'm only 60) and I've started coloring as a form of physical therapy, but mainly I use it for "emotional and relaxation" therapy. For some reason, within a week or two of having the stroke, I became completely fascinated with mandalas! Both the colors and shapes. I see them everywhere I look now. I can't explain it, but I feel very calm and peaceful around them, which I've never experienced before with them. I guess I'd found them pretty and interesting before, but I've NEVER felt this fascination and connection with them at all before the stroke. My family thought it might help give me something fun and creative to do. But, since I'm not really the artistic type, and I can't really even draw a decent stick figure, they gave me "adult" coloring books full of mandalas to color. They were right, and I really am enjoying coloring, but like you, my hands tire and cramp quite a bit, especially now. So, I can't wait to try your little trick, and I'm sure it'll help me work a bit longer, with much better results. I also can't wait to watch more of your videos for other tips and tricks. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas, and your talent 😀
Coloring is magic and it is art:) Glad you found it at just the right time in your life💚
WOW!! I bought cheap colored pencils before I knew anything about water soluble pencils. I didn't understand WHY some fancy colored pencils cost so much! I'm not thrilled with my cheap pencils. But I will try Vaseline and that should make a big difference. Thx so much for great video!!!
Austin,TX USA
You’re most welcome, neighbor! Hope this heat is treating you well!🥵 And, the price difference between low priced pencils like Crayola and artist quality pencils like Faber-Castell Polychromos is due to their ingredients being different, their manufacturing style, their color selection, and their performance. You can make stunning art with both, in my opinion, but they each have a place in an artist’s tool kit. This technique is really best with inexpensive pencils as it makes coloring with them more enjoyable. My artist quality pencils create deep saturation and smooth blends all by themselves (they are so creamy). As far as light fastness though, I’ve had Crayola colored pencil art hanging in direct Texas sunlight for years and it has not faded at all-how cool is that?!
I love Michelle’s description of a colour party in the Vaseline! It does look like confetti! 🎉
:) Glad my word ways made you smile!

@@HaveColorWillTravel OOPS! Thank you though! Followed! 😊
Just be aware that petroleum jelly is flammable. So careful with open flames around it :) Great tip though! Going to try it for sure.
Absolutely! So many art supplies are extremely flammable and toxic (always read the fine print on art materials)-best practice is to never create when enjoying candles or eating/drinking! All that is why there are certain types of art supplies that are *only* for adults-not because kids aren’t capable of using them, but because it just isn’t safe.🤓
Happened to come across your channel by accident, pleasant surprise too. I just lost my sister Nov 4th of last year and her name was Michele Johnson too. Love the tip and will be sharing it with my daughter. Thank you
I’m so sorry for your loss😔 I’m glad this video showed up for you at just the right time💚
@@HaveColorWillTravel Thank you 👼
Wowzer! This is very cool. I love seeing ways that people take simple tools and make them work better for them! It can be so discouraging to have lower-budget art equipment, so it's really amazing to know that there are ways to make them work differently without buying a whole new set.
Glad you liked it!
I love hearing you talk! Keep it up and thanks for the great tips! I’d hate to think that a giant bug slurped on my pencils when it was the petroleum dissolving it! LOL! You do Great work and Videos!😃
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed this tutorial🤓
Oh wow, the things they don't teach in school! I haven't colored in a while...fatigue was real! Time to get back to it- thanks for posting this! And, I also agree with the other comments...I love your voice and speaking style!
You’re so welcome, and thank you for those kind words!💚
I feel you on the “limited creative cash budget” (LCCB for short) ;o) A neighbor just gave me some Derwent pastel pencils, which I’ve been using to make more saturated color on my gel prints. I was enormously frustrated by trying to do it with my Arteza colored pencils. I’ve been dreading replacing the Derwents with my LCCB. Thanks to your tip, I can improve my Arteza pencils.
Wonderful art can be made on any budget so I’m glad this video will help you get the most out of what you already own! I love my Derwent pencils (I have a variety of them) and my Faber-Castells and my Prismacolors and my Koh-I-Noors (yes, I have a colored pencils obsession), but I also get great enjoyment from and love teaching with my Crayola regular and watercolor pencils because they are affordable and therefore not intimidating to folks who are just beginning to explore their creativity. And you know what? I have coloring art that has been in direct sunlight for the past 4 years in my studio, a piece I created for my online colored pencil blending class with Crayola regular colored pencils, and it is still as brilliant now as it was when I created it on simple copy paper! There aren’t lightfast testings on budget colored pencils, but from my experience, at least the Crayola variety pack a hearty punch in this regard!🤓
That was awesome...my 11 yo grandson and I watched this video...we were both in awe!!!... my grandson is quite the budding artist...me I can't draw a good stick man...but he is gold w art...I am crowing about him, but it is truth... so he is going to get my Vaseline and have fun with this technique...
That is awesome! Happy coloring!
not sure how you got in my recommended but hopefully you've done more vids with talking, your voice is very pleasant. awesome coloring hack too, I had no idea!
Thank you for those kind words:) I have done quite a few more videos that include me speaking while I teach. I hope you enjoy those as well!🤓
OMG, this is the best coloring tip ever!!!!! I love colored pencils and I'm always disappointed in the saturation level. It's ok, but that tip just takes it to a new height. Thanks so much
You are so welcome!
That's awesome! I use Gamsol and a blending stick to go over the colored pencil and it works great too!
Yep! Also a great tool, even with other art supplies. So many possibilities:)
Great tip! I've never heard of this before. I haven't colored in a really long time, because I do color hard, to get nice saturated colors,& yes, my fingers are killing me after. I have a cleaning business, so my hands already hurt anyway. I also could get some better pencils too. I also just have the large box of crayola. Next time my hands are feeling ok, I'll have to try this! Thanks!!
Yes, artist quality pencils do allow for more coloring flexibility, and I love my Faber-Castell Polychromos & my Prismacolors Premieres, but fabulous coloring art can be made with all sorts of supplies! I hope this technique helps you find some gentle-to-hands enjoyment with your Crayolas!💚
Thanks for this eye-opening tutorial! I will definitely be trying this out. 🎨 ❤️
My pleasure:)
Thanks for sharing very useful have arthritis so this helps to brighten colours
I’m glad you found it useful! I love helping folks find their way back to coloring💚
I've been using Vaseline on my eye liner and eyebrow pencils for years to make them go on smoother. I will have to try it for colored pencils as well!
Fantastic!
I used colored pencil for eons, i wish i knew this before instead of obsessively hoarding blender pencils.
Well, blender pencils are good too, I think; they all achieve different effects!🤓
Wow! NOW I find out about this fun open-ended project!!! I just retired from teaching Pre-Kindergarten.......I would use broader pencils for the younger children.
Great idea-just be sure they are paraffin wax based colored pencils and this tip will work great!
“we don’t say facial wipes we say kleenex” that’s the moment i was able to put my finger on why you felt so familiar. you sound exactly like my 4th grade english teacher and her voice was always so soothing and pretty too much and so is yours ! i enjoyed hearing her read and i enjoyed watching this because of your talking. i think your speaking skills are perfect btw !
☺️Thank you for watching, for sharing that story, and those kind words!!💚
Awesome!! I have a whole box full of cheaper ones that I never use, but I'm excited to try this!! Thank you for sharing!! 🥰
You are so welcome!
I've always wanted to get more into colored pencils but found myself annoyed by them not coming out concentrated enough without a lot of layering (or pushing hard enough to dent the paper). This seems promising, especially interested in the blending
I go into more detail about that in this companion article on my website: www.havecolorwilltravel.com/2019/10/crayola-colored-pencilsand-petroleum.html
After spending a good amount of time and money I've found that many different types of oils will also work as well as isopropyl alcohol, nail polish remover with acetone and orderless mineral spirits (Gamsol)
Indeed, there are many paths to the same outcome-one of the things I love about being an artist! I do focus on keeping my studio as non-toxic as possible, though, as I have 4 studio cats, so when I can (they aren’t allowed in while I have acrylic or certain watercolor paint action going on) I favor the safest methods and the ones they have zero interest in (my kitties could care a less about petroleum jelly).🤓 Thank you for sharing your experience for folks!
Thank you for information on using Vaseline. I’m a beginner so it really helps.
You’re most welcome!
By the way I think you sound amazing. Even great teachers have their own challenges as humans. I don't know if I've watched your videos before but with your voice, it adds more colour to your tutoring.
You're doing great. 🥰 I'll definitely try this technique.
Thank you for those kind words💚 Happy coloring!
I like to color pages then oil the back of them to make stained glass effect. This will look beautiful and more like solid glass colors than regular pencil strokes! Thanks fir the cool tip!!!
How would you store the art if you weren't going to hang it immediately? Would you store it between wax paper because of the petroleum jelly?
Thanks for sharing your idea! And, I let any coloring I’ve done with this technique sort of dry out for a few days on a surface out of the way of my four studio cats. After that I haven’t found the art to behave any differently than any other illustration of mine I’ve colored:)
That was my question too! Thank you for asking. I'm curious to see how this works out --- looks really cool!
Great video and such a cool technique! My granddaughter is quite the little artist. I can’t wait to show her this technique. She will love it! Thanks for sharing

Prismacolor pencils have a softish texture and give the shiny, thick covering that looks like your Vaseline finish. They are more expensive, but really worth it.
Absolutely! I love my Prismas and Polychromos! I love coloring with all sorts of tools:)
Not everyone has money for more expensive... So for those people this is a nice thing.
@@Miauwies absolutely! Glad you enjoyed the video!🤓
How the heck did I not see this until now?! I have a hard time pressing pencils to make the color stick. This just might help. Thank you!
My pleasure:)
Going to share with my 3 grand daughters today! All three of them are artistic!!!!
This is a super fun technique with kids! Enjoy!!💚
Yes! I tried that about 20 or 30 years ago on a double portrait. I thought the petroleum in the jelly would help it blend. I actually did the drawing first and then used the p.j. on a q tip to blend. I wasn't sure if it would effect the paper at all, after time had passed.
If you would get Prismacolor or a better brand than Crayola, you wouldn't have to press near as hard.
You are absolutely correct! Artist quality pencils blend naturally with greater ease. I never use blenders or solvents with my Prismacolors Premieres or Fabre-Castell Polychromos because it just isn’t necessary. This tutorial is for making the most of inexpensive colored pencils, though-I’m all about creating art with whatever you have and with any level of art supply:) Thanks for watching!
I just stumbled upon this video and you just blew my mind.
I tried it the second you said it, freaking Amazing!!! I’ve never heard this tip! It works great!!! Thanks!
You're welcome!!
Thank you so much this is perfect I want to make posters this technique is perfect for what I want to do.
Makes me wish I was still an art teacher so I could have passed this on. Great tip!
Can't wait to tell my son. He loves a certain marker brand, but this might surprise him. If petroleum jelly is a solvent, I'm putting it over my moisturizer on my face every night, yikes! Seriously, it is an excellent protectant and keeps the moisture in as we all know. Love this demo! Thanks!
Not that sort of solvent! It breaks down the oil based color cores so that they are softer when you color. My dad has always used petroleum jelly for chapped hands, and he’s just fine:)
@@HaveColorWillTravel My mom used to make me use vaseline on my own chapped hands at night when I was a kid and then put socks on my hands to keep the vaseline off the bedding. It worked so well that I actually use the same technique for my feet. I use Bag of Balm for my feet, though, and it keeps them from getting crusty skin (gross!) and tough callouses.
I use Derwent inktense pencils with Aloe Vera gel to fix the colours…especially on fabric.
Interesting-I love Inktense!
Thank you much much for this awesome tip - know the sore and painful hands and fingers after working on a drawing, and pencils that doesnt quite give the colours expected. I was thinking, that the vaseline would leave fat stains on the paper, its good to know that it doesnt.
YES - WAU! them colours in the drawing you showed at the end, if not knowing what you now showed us, I would have said, this one is made with markerpens, not pencils! Im so excited to try this :)
Idk if you’ve talked about it before but baby oil is another good option. Color with your normal pressure then take a q-tip with baby oil and lightly apply. Be carful or it’ll smear. It can also work to blend colors for that reason
I find baby oil a bit too messy for my studio situation (I have four studio cats regularly causing shenanigans) and lacks the control I love about creating with colored pencils. BUT, you are correct-baby oil softens the color core of pencils nicely as well!
@@HaveColorWillTravel That makes sense :) I can definitely picture the mess that baby oil and cats could make.
How does the vaseline effect the paper? Does it bleed into the paper fibers?
Like I said in the video, it eventually dries, and I have not seen any feathering on coloring projects I’ve completed with this method:) Check out the companion blog to this video for more detail: www.havecolorwilltravel.com/2019/10/crayola-colored-pencilsand-petroleum.html
Cool technique! Thanks for sharing!
While it's a nice affect, I don't know if the oils would bleed unevenly into the paper over time.
I haven’t found that to be true, which is fun:)
I never would have imagined using that stuff in tandem with pencils, or any art supply?? But this looks wicked cool im going to try it!
Awesome! Have fun!
I would never have guessed that! Amazing! Thanks for sharing!
You are so welcome!
Enjoyed learning something new!
Glad to hear it!🤓
This was interesting, thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh nice trick. I like to play with adult coloring books as a hobby but the pigmentation of my pencils aren't that great so I tend to spend extra time and effort when I want saturated colors. Maybe I'll try this instead.
Love your printing.
Thank you!
P.S.: Love (L O V E !) your "penmanship" (printing), Michelle!!
Aww-thanks!😍
HA, This is exactly what I was thinking. Such neat printing!
Question: (Love this tip! Thx!) I have the 72 count Crayola pencils that I use when sending out greeting cards to sisters and grandkids. They would think something was wrong with me if they ever received a card from me without funny drawings inside.SO, if I use the Vaseline, even tiny amounts, would I be able to close and mail the card without it getting smudged on the facing side? You never say how long it takes to dry. TIA
Okay, so I’m not entirely sure I understand where you were going to use this technique in your cards-were you going to create the funny drawing with colored pencils using petroleum jelly? Whether or not it smeared would have more to do with the surface of the paper of your greeting card (they tend to be slick and without much tooth). I say give it a try on a scrap card you don’t plan to send, let it set for a bit, say a day, and then see what happens. I color my Colorable Cards I create for my shop using this technique and send them just fine, but I print these up on art papers and the coloring is only on the outside cover. 🤓
Maybe cut a square of waxed paper & place over your drawing?
Good idea! Even simple copy paper or lined paper should work:)
Love the tip. Ty.
Wow! Cool technique. Thank you 🙌

How cool! Thank you for the information.
Just buy some watercolor pencils. Caran D'Ache makes some really nice ones. Maybe try NuPastels or markers?
Those are all fun supplies, and I have some of them (love my Neocolors!). This technique is for folks looking to save creative cash and create coloring masterpieces simultaneously.

@@HaveColorWillTravel understood
Do you need to re-dip periodically, or does the Vaseline continue to soften the lead? Approximately how long does it take the Vaseline on the page to dry? Thanks.
Depends on the size space you are coloring and the effect you are going for. Also depends on the color you are using-some are more responsive than others. I found leaving it for a day to be ample drying time, BUT that all depends entirely on the climate you live in-I’m in south Texas where my A/C runs non-stop most of the year, so things dry quickly most months.🤓
Wow! That’s amazing! Very informative- I had no idea that pjelly was a solvent🤓
This is the first video of yours that I have seen. I had difficulty seeing your work because the light was insufficient. Also, placement of your light source created shadows of your hand & that made visibility even worse for me. I’m going to check out more of your videos, tho👍🏻
Glad you enjoyed it! This video is quite old-all my tech and lighting is much improved now:) Cheers!🤓
Can you still blend with paint thinner with the petroleum jelly? I’m wondering how this does long-term for drying, or if the oil stains the paper at all? Thanks for sharing!
I rarely use paint thinner, so I couldn’t say. I don’t combine anything with it when I do, however, and use extreme caution with all toxic & flammable materials. Petroleum jelly used in the right amount (just the bittiest amount) has a negligible effect on the paper. Too much would definitely cause a stain.
You or very good an so could at explaining.i have never used pencils this way I enjoyed you very much❤
Thank you so much for those kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the tutorial! Happy coloring!💚
Loved coming across this tip! Thanks

Oh my goodness I love this I shared it with a friend of mine she does artwork and sell them online with pencils and paper I'm going to have to do that next time I'm sketching out there picture because it looks so pretty thank you for sharing this video I'm going to follow you
Thanks for sharing!!
Have you attempted to use water instead? When I was little a water color artist showed me how to just use water with any regular colored pencils to achieve way more pigment and blendability. It's been my go-to ever since
Interesting! I don’t use water with regular colored pencils (but love doing so with my watercolor pencils!) because my personal colored pencil style is to create depth through layers rather than pressure. The technique I share here in this video is for folks who love to create that intense look in a swifter way (layers take loads of time) and for folks with grip issues. My IRL students love it because it gives them so much more control over how their coloring art turns out:)
Thank you, will definitely give it a try. I can’t press hard enough for deep saturation.
Awesome result
Thank you!
I color my pages the regular way and then take a cotton bud and go over them afterward that way I'm not in danger of forgetting it on the tip of my pencil.
Interesting! Thanks for sharing!🤓
What a wonderful tool to teach to us!! I usually don’t like using cheap pencils because they are so dull when you color with them but this allows us to buy cheaper sets and create beautiful rich colors like the expensive colored pencils!! Thank you so very much!! 🖤🐈⬛🖤
You are so welcome!
Have you ever tried putting water over the color on the page or rubbing alcohol? The water will cause kind of like a watercolor color effect. The alcohol will cause kind of like a gradient type effect. This is interesting, I'll try it. You can also use coconut oil or other cooking oil over a colored area to kind of create an oil painting effect. Also a hair dryer will cause ink or whatever medium to dry fast on a page. Just run it over the drawing on a cool setting.
Absolutely-I love coloring mixed media style! Every art medium I own gets used in coloring, even paint:)
@@HaveColorWillTravel Very cool! I like trying different art styles as well and using mixed media. I look forward to seeing more content on your channel. :3
Okay, so could you put your pencil shavings in petroleum jelly to let the color melt out then paint with the colored jelly?
Ooh, probably! And now I might start saving my pencil shavings just to try this out! Cool idea!🤓

So they kinda turn into oil pastels in a way? Cool!!! Ty foe the tip! 😃
That’s a good way of describing it! Except they do dry and aren’t smeary like oil pastels can be:)

You are so welcome!
Your handwriting is Gorgeous.
Aww-thank you!
This is awesome, but am a little concerned about using it in my coloring books for fear it might bleed onto the other page when the book is closed.
This is a totally legitimate concern. I cannot say whether or not this will happen as I put a piece of copy paper between those pages when I use this technique or color with oil pastels in a coloring book. I enjoy using this technique more with stand alone coloring pieces like the colorable cards, bookmarks, and gift tags I create. My website has examples if you’re interested in seeing exactly what I mean: www.havecolorwilltravel.com/
I hope this extra info helps!
