Why Watercolor Pencils Are My Favorite Art Supply (Hint: It Involves Sizing Up An Image!)!
In this Quick Tip/My Fave installment I share my super easy and effective method for gridding/sizing up images to create large scale paintings based on photographs. The secret to learning to love gridding a canvas (Like seriously-I don’t mind it at all, and even sort of have a good time doing it!) lies in my using the humble watercolor pencil in place of the traditional graphite or colored pencils. I swiftly walk y’all through this process and share my MANY water soluble drawing supplies while talking about why some of these awesome supplies (honestly-I love them all) are super effective for this gridding process and others need to avoided at all costs (like seriously, do NOT use these for this gridding technique!). I hope you enjoy this video and that it inspires you to start exploring art supplies that are transformers (more than meets the eye!)!🤓
🔗Supplies discussed in this video:
I show y’all A LOT of water soluble art tools in this video, but below are the main two that I think are the main takeaways from this short video⬇️⬇️

Journey Through An Acrylic Pet Portrait From Start To Finish (A Gorgeous Tortoiseshell Cat!)!

During my recent portrait painting of my gorgeous tortie cat, Merry, I took a lot of photos, far more than I typically do while working. Why? My intention for this painting was so go super detailed on her face and soften out the focus as the image expanded away, and that meant making LOADS of tiny, difficult to notice right away, adjustments as I painted. Taking a photo every now and then throu...

Love these pens! I have the college set, 0.25, 0.35, and 0.5. I've had to clean them only once in a few years (my fault for not using them frequently) and I plan to get a 0.3 and 0.4 to fill in the gaps! Using them on vellum paper is an absolute dream.
I have sizes .2 through .6 and absolutely love them! I’ve not tried them on vellum-I tend to use them on watercolor paper & then paint my illustration-but I will have to give that a try! Thanks for watching:)
But why would people use the transparent white? It’s too translucent
@Wowwwzaaa for the very reason I speak to and demo in this video-to avoid creating opacity in a color you are wishing to tint. Titanium white (PW6) is the most opaque of all paints, so mixing it with any color immediately creates a pastel-like version of the original color. Sometimes that’s what you-covering power and the softness of pastels-but sometimes not, especially when working with transparent colors! It’s likely why it’s call “Mixing White” in some acrylic paint brands, to help folks understand its purpose. For watercolor, mixing white (a less opaque white) is typically called Chinese White. In both cases, the pigment code you want to look for a mixing white is PW4. Hope the difference & purpose is clearer for you-mixing white, unlike titanium, is rarely used on its own:)
Glad to see another rapidograph/isograph enthusiast! Koh-i-noor (apparently they bought Rotring) is another solid choice for a technical pen set. I buy used sets to try and repair them on my free time.
@aquanox4438 Really? I hadn’t heard that about Koh-i-noor acquiring Rotring! Hopefully that will help with availability? Rotring are so hard to find for most folks, me included! I take very good care of mine as i love them SO much-their lines are so satisfying! My Rotring, my Pentel Bush pen, and my Sailor Fude nib fountain pen make up my go to family of drawing tools:)
It would have been nice if you showed the water resistant part by using water.
Thanks for the suggestion! I will keep that in mind for a future video:)
appreciated this info thankyou ,may i suggest the music in the back ground i found somewhat off putting ,just me i suppose but it was difficult to concentrate ..
I will keep that in mind for future videos! Some folks love background music, some need silence. Can’t please everyone with every video, so I try to offer a little of each type! Thank you for watching and for the suggestion:)
Thank you so much! I learned so many new valuable things!!!
Glad to hear it! Thank you for watching!🌟
It's usually not recommended to use these on textured paper. Have they been clogged or damaged by using it on paper that has 'tooth'?
@gunsmokeandghouls , I have had no trouble using Rotrings on watercolor paper (haven’t felt the need to use them on really loose fibrous paper like construction paper). But, I am very attentive to my nibs-cleaning them periodically as I work if I see any fiber collecting on the nibs. I love the line they create on the paper I love, so it is worth the effort for me. I also have a “light touch” according to those who’ve watch me draw, so perhaps with a heavier hand there’d be a bit of a problem there. And I mention those things in this video-with care and attention, these pens are awesome on watercolor paper.
Thanks for this comparison. About what to do with leftover paint on your palette and toning down your colors: At the end of your painting session transfer all the leftover paint to a lidded jar and mix them up. Keep adding to this jar, day after day. This becomes a "mother color". When you want less garish colors than what comes out of the tube add just a tiny touch of Mother to each of the color piles that you will be working with. This tones down to colors slightly and makes them harmonize with each other because they now have a bit of every color. BTW, it looks like you have mold growing in your stay wet palette. Try putting a couple of Lysol Wipes under the clean sponge to prevent mold from developing.
Making a “parent color” (that’s the term I gave to this practice) is something I love to do when working on a painting! Thanks for bringing up that option:) And, I know all about mold growth in moist palettes (learned that one the hard way😝), but that coloration in this video is residual staining from previous painting sessions-I use sta-wet palette paper for as long as possible before letting it dry out and then using it for collage fodder or to cover a handmade sketchbook. Maximizing my materials is a big focus for me-art supplies are so expensive!🤑
Thanks for sharing this comment and comparison the isographic pens. Kind regards, Geertjan
Absolutely:)
Thanks for validating the little blob at the end of my lines when I use a micron 😂
Ha! You’re most welcome😄
I'm so jealous I love the creamy crayons
They really are such fun to create with! I love having all the colors🤓
Thank you for a very informative video. If I can make a tiny little feedback… I am sound sensitive, and every time you drummed repeatedly on the tin boxes with your fingertips, I almost clicked off your video, because it became hard for me to listen to. I made it to the end, though 😊 Take care ❤
Thank you for watching despite my nervous gestures-I appreciate it! And thank you for sharing your experience-I will keep that in mind as I prep myself to film new work:)
@@HaveColorWillTravel I totally understand that nervous gesture 🤗 I think you did great. I did not pick up any nervousness at all, and I enjoyed your video. I dabble a bit it colored pencils, and a bit in watercolor, so this video intrigued me 😊 I have subscribed because you said that you have many art supplies, so I imagine you have many fun things in store here on your channel ❤️ Greetings from Norway
Thanks for subscribing, and yes, all kinds art & the supplies to make all kinds of art are my passion, so when I have time, I love sharing about what I’ve learned or am learning!🤓
Good afternoon! Could you please tell me if the caps of isographs of different nib sizes are identical inside? Can you use the cap from a 0.2 isograph with a 0.5 isograph? Thank you!
Good morning:) On the Rotring I have (sizes .2 to .6), each cap is labeled at the top with its size identifier, which suggests that they are not interchangeable. But I looked carefully at a .3 and .5, and to my eye the inside is the same rubberized inner barrier on each, so my best guess that with sizes that are relatively close to each other, the caps might be interchangeable. BUT that is just a guess, so keep that in mind! Thanks for the interesting question-I’d never examine their caps closely before!🤓
Thank you!
No more produced !!! I love broad tip also 1.4 mm
Really? Are you outside of the U.S.? Here in the states, our major art retailers still sell them, though 1.4 I’ve never seen-that sounds like amazing size to work with!!
the isograph 0.35 is my all time favourite drawing pen, i adore the fine lines i can get with it. My biggest issue with these pens is that the barrel always eventually cracks, sometimes to the point where some of the threads actually crack off and the barrel wont stay on the pen at all. It's exceedingly frustrating.
They do make may favorite lines also! But I agree-their design is fragile. I opt to use my Rotrings exclusively in my studio space-they don’t travel with me or get put in anything but the case they came in because I just don’t trust the design to hold up to the rough and tumble-ness of life. I’m even super gentle when twisting their caps off and on for the exact reason you mentioned-the threads don’t seemed designed for anything but the lightest touch. Frustrating, yes, but still LOVE the lines I can get, so they are still my faves!
Your voice is so soothing!
How kind of you to say-thank you!
great tip!
Thanks-glad you found it helpful:)
Do watercolor crayons leave a residue if you use them this way? Or do they wash away like the pencils?
Watercolor crayons are a bit tricky, and my suspicion is that it is due to their waxy nature. If you were sketching with a super light touch AND coming back to these lines fairly quickly with your paint or water, it *might* not give you any trouble. But in my experience, even having to set aside a piece of work for a day (which, let’s be real, often has to happen), the crayon lines set into the paper or canvas in what I find to be an unhelpful way. Watercolor pencils (at least the ones I use in this video) don’t have that issue. Long answer to say be careful with watercolor crayons when it comes to creating under drawings🙃
Believe it or not, I watch this video, to avoid to buy Makers Cabinet FERRULE.. I mean I have an itch getting it, but the pricetag holds me back... I do a lot of sketching with either Graphite pencils or Red Chalk pencils mostly and in the same time, I like to write with pencils... Never had an issue, ordering an art supply, Makers Cabinet FERRULE is both hard to get and hard to avoid. I'm a freak about control/precision and that tool II'm sure it provides that, improbving the superlightweight pencils control, linework and handwriting is going to look way better.if it only cost half that price!!
I was unfamiliar with that product until your comment had me searching for info on it-it is incredibly expensive! For me, a pencil extender helps my colored pencils have longer life, and art supply I use for extended periods of time-I don’t see something like Makers Cabinet’s Ferrule helping me there as its extender is considerably heavier than the Derwent (much more economical) version and would definitely create hand fatigue. But I’m happy to know if its existence-thank you for that!
Makers Cabinet’s Ferrule is more of an improvment, for sketching and writing, because weight adds control and the thicker grip, also imrpoves the thin grip that graphite pencils usually have. For colored pencils, what you use is far more ideal! so you shouldn't care about it as much as I do! I mean I hope so, because it's expensive. You can literally get a full set of Artist great color pencils, with the money it costs!@@HaveColorWillTravel
How difficult is it to change the blade on the T'gaal sharpener? It looks rather awkward from the video, hard to get a screw driver in there. I keep packs of B+D blades (I hope I'm remembering the name correctly) which seem to fit most hand sharpeners, will they fit this brand, too?
Gosh, I really don’t know! I have yet to need to replace a blade in any of my T’gaals (I have multiple stashed in convenient art-ing spots). The only sharpener I have that comes with blade replacements is the KUM long point (in this video), which I’m almost feeling needs replacing, but haven’t yet. I am not a heavy sharpener-I use a point in a pencil, rotating frequently, until I’m forced to stop working and sharpen-which is probably why I don’t have a good answer to your question.🙃 Looking at my T’Gaal though, it seems near impossible to change out the blade without damaging the sharpener as a whole😕
Thanks, I thought it looked like a difficult angle. I've ordered one anyway, I seem to be acquiring a large collection of sharpeners!
Honestly, I like having a variety of sharpeners, and I think it makes sense- -I have a variety of pencils, and each kind works best with a specific sharpener. As far as I’ve found, there isn’t one sharpener to rule them all.🤓
I thought they were famous for clogging and drying
They haven’t given me those troubles (I have six pens) EXCEPT with their white Rotring ink, which hasn’t performed well at all, imo. In fact, I’m gearing up to clean a .02 pen of the white Rotring ink mess-I’m done trying to make it work! Black Rotring ink in my other five pens has been trouble free though, but I store them horizontally and only draw with them in the studio, never traveling with them.
@@HaveColorWillTraveldang, i actually wanted Rotring pens specifically to use with their white ink. Have you found a white ink that works? Thinking about trying the Koh-I-Noor white ink, but it's probably similar to the Rotring white ink.
I haven’t yet:( After that clogging experience I have leaned on dip pens for creating with white ink-not as streamlined, to be sure, BUT no clogs!
Thank you do much! I'm about to buy some Liquitex paint and wasn't sure how to go about which pigments to choose. This cleared up a lot for me in regards to labels! You're a life saver!
Glad you found it useful-thanks for watching!

Thanks! I’m glad you watched and enjoyed it:)
I thought I wasted my money on the wrong whites. The swatches showed how I can use it after all.
Awesome-glad you found it useful! Having both really expands one’s palette, I think:)
Great info. I’m on the way to the craft store now to practice. 😊
Glad you found it helpful-thanks for watching!
Thank you, I have been trying to find someone who could show me the difference between those two whites. Perfect. 🙂
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching:)
Oh, man, the fact that we remember those as floppy discs now is so weird! Those 3.5 inch discs were not floppy like the old 5+ inch ones, but what else do you call them? 😂 Good to see things usefully repurposed!
Everything old comes around again…except ancient tech, so where else to use it but in art?!?🤓
The outer cover is not floppy, but the actual magnetic disc inside is floppy.
Exactly! Hence the name:) I still remember the sound of flipping through them to find a specific disk🤓
I have a question do you have a hard time finish one project at a time
I do, and that frustrates me, but I try to go with the flow and have multiple works going at the same time:)

Heyy I am new to your channel
Welcome:)
Congratulations on portraying a truly creative, happy workspace
Thank you so much for those kind words and for watching!💚🌈💚
This was super interesting. I’ve never given mixing white much attention because it seemed pointless, but I was struggling with titanium white desaturating a color too much a few days ago and now I see a solution 😊 Thanks, Michelle!
My absolute pleasure! So glad you found the video helpful! Another magic mixing color is Titanium Buff or Buff Titanium (brand names vary), which I will be discussing here soon:) Thanks so much for watching!💚
Aaaaahhhhh I love this and want to make my own now! I’ve never used that paper - why did you pick it? Did you like it? Would you recommend it? As we all know, paper is everything.
Sweet! You will not regret the effort, I promise (although do allow for the time-it is not a rush-able process). As far as paper, full disclosure-I love Canson products. I chose this spiral pad because A. Was slightly higher grade than their XL, and B. Was still reasonably priced. I honestly have not found myself fond of everyone’s fave (Arch), so opted for leaning on a brand I enjoy for this resource. For this project I think it’s perfect-it shows granulation well and lifts easily. Would I work on it for a stand alone piece? Depends on what I was going for. It does not hold water long, BUT for this project that was a benefit, especially when having to wait for layers to dry to test a paint’s layering and opacity characteristics. So, short answer-yes, I like it; yes, I would recommend it, BUT only if your painting goals met its limitations, if that makes sense. I definitely prefer it over Strathmore 400 series, which is supposed to be comparable. All Strathmore’s watercolor paper levels have been disappointing imo.
❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the 💚💚💚
Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for sharing!
Glad to hear this video was helpful! Happy painting:)
These are awesome.
Thank you so much!

Awesome! So glad you enjoyed it-I always hope folks will be inspired to make creations of their own from my videos:) Thanks for watching!!💚
you can also scribble them on a plastic surface (or possibly a ceramic palette) and pick up the colour with a wet brush
Absolutely! And you’re correct-a plastic surface works better than a ceramic plate, ie. watercolor palette, I find. I save the lids of yogurt containers for this reason! These little markers are super versatile:)
Definitely going have a go at this. I have tried it before, but I think I didn't leave the salt on long enough - too impatient, as usual! I like the way you did a little bit, then left it and came back to it. These bookmarks looked really special in the end. The moral of this story for me? Take your time!
Patience is SO hard in life, but even more so with art! When one sits down to be creative the last thing we want to do is wait!🙃 I’m notoriously impatient with watercolor, so how I plan for my impatience is to prep multiples of what I’m trying to do-notice how many bookmark patterns I had in the end? Six! While one was drying I got to keep painting by getting started on the next one:) Still, all needed to dry for a full day to really have the effect, BUT since I had done six instead of one my inner child (that’s always where I feel my impatience comes from) felt satisfied at pausing at the appropriate time. Thanks for watching, and I hope you have fun looking for your own patterns in watercolor!💚
@@HaveColorWillTravel Cool tip! Looking forward to doing this.😃
Love that spacey looking one! Why does the salt do that to the colors?
It’s super interesting, right?! Salt drags the water towards it, absorbing it (just how salty food makes one thirsty, salt sucks up the water on wet watercolor paper), which is one reason why adding salt to wet watercolor paper & pigment makes patterns. The other thing is that salt interacts with different pigments uniquely, so some colors have very dramatic effects while other colors have minimal effects. What type and quality of paper you use also affects the patterning of this technique. The possibilities with this technique are truly infinite and fascinating, I think!🤓
when it comes to some of those more linear patterns, you could even try inserting/cutting the paper sideways so you can get diagonal lines on your square for some variation!
So true! I did glue each square in unique ways to maximize pattern diversity, and I may even write some drawing options (ie. Use left hand, draw without looking, hold writing utensil sideways) to add even more complexity. Anything to distract my overwhelmed brain with simple directives is a win win. Thanks for the suggestion!🤓
I also have Raynaud's! I was gifted a hand warmer a few years ago and it's a life saver. I used to buy small heating packs meant for hikers but they're one use each and super wasteful. I didn't know USB hand warmers existed before so it was truly a great gift. Your apron looks very good too! I don't use aprons but I can totally believe having them hang by your neck all the time would cause issues.
Same!! Those hikers hand warmers were awesome, but ugh the waste! And I wouldn’t use them if it wasn’t actually winter (I have Raynaud’s issues regardless of seasons) because I only needed the heat for a minute or two and it felt so wasteful😜 So glad to have been gifted this little gadget, and my doc’s glad I have it too😉
This is a very cute project! Waiting in hospitals is so terribly stressful, but this is an inspiring idea, and I'm glad you found something that works for you. Sending strength to your son for his recovery!
Thank you so much for watching and for your kind words💚
