Where exactly have you seen any darkness in this beautiful opus of the big Imperial Style? Tchaikovsky is one of the biggest Humanists in the world music, he has no darkness at all. Just some melancholy, maybe. Melancholy is very human too.

Orgue29 I don't read nor speak Russian but it is my guess that, as this is recorded during Soviet times, they used Soviet adapted, non religious lyrics, contrary to Tchaikovsky's original.
@@bartjebartmans According to what I hear and what I see in the score, I would say, that the edition is Soviet and the text there is adapted, but the singing seems to be closer to the original intention. Here are some examples: text -- "the people are thinking", choir -- "the prince is thinking"; text -- "way-showing star", choir -- "Bethleem star"; text -- "slavic countries", choir -- "Eastern (?!) countries"; text -- "the debt requires me to raise the flag of fight", choir -- "Oh, God, I'm not worth"; text -- "under order of loved Patria", choir -- "given to us by God's grace"; text -- "our loved land", choir -- "Orthodox tsar"; text -- "sing to bread", choir -- "sing to sky" etc. etc.
Tchaikovsky, in the style of Bach, Haydn, and Beethoven, with the majestic spirit of Russian music. Its just wonderful!
An interesting discovery of this unknown side of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Thank you!
This is amazing, I cannot believe that I had not heard this before!
Wonderful.. love a nice piece of dark Russian music...
Yes...I can also hear Beethoven's choral fantasy in this too...

Wonderful, never heard this Tchaikovsky music, did not known it existed. Thank you very much, also for the information !
Angelic.. It reminds me of Beethoven's choral fantasy at some points, in its jubilant finale. I am grateful to have come across this fantastic piece!

How did you find this page? This may be one of the best online musical archives I have ever seen.
Gosh, if I could remember… it’s been three years now… maybe it was pure luck. But I’m glad you enjoy it.
Thank you. Only one think I haven't got: what year is this lovely recording made?
