That turned out amazing! I've finished some swirled objects with clear coat too. What I do is use regular clear coat during the leveling stages (costs 5 euros a can, 4,50 dollars). Once it's almost level I shoot two coats of 2k. You've got to be a little bit careful not to burn through the finish and it costs a bit more time. But it's a lot cheaper and just as durable.

I spray my guitar bodies with an Iwata Medea siphon feed and a .05 needle using Createx paint. This is after I've used Solarez grain filler. After grain filling, sanding, and painting I use Solarez clear high gloss top coat. The thing about Solarez top coat is you brush it on with a foam brush and let it level for about an hour. Notice I said level, because it won't dry. To dry it, you take it out into direct sunlight for 3 minutes. It's completely dry and ready final buffing and polishing, then for the electronic to be installed. Guitar looks like its been dipped in glass.

I personally like the variation between large and small cracks. Keeps a great crackle from looking mundane. Also is more realistic (look at real, aged crackle on an antique). Second, you can level your gloss coat more quickly AND safely if you back your sandpaper with something stiff. Using your fingers allows the paper to sand down into the cracks and low spots somewhat, causing you to have to sand you high spots even more. Take it from someone who has done high-end finishing on cars. Doesn't need to be a solid board. A layer or two of rag stretched on a small piece of wood, or use a dense piece of foam for curves. Light pressure! Nice work!
Yeah I could have definitely used a stiffer yet flexible backer, and I'm well aware that it's possible to create ruts when using your fingers, but I like to do it that way. I've used the spray max 2K a few times. It works damn well and the cans have a good fan pattern. I use a drill and some foam pads to buff mine. Looks awesome

Very cool. Do you ever get little bubbles to form under the clear with only giving it a flash time of a minute for the solvent to escape? I have to wait like five minutes between coats.
that tip is for an overlapping pattern, to avoid that turn it 45 degrees and the pattern will be more uniform, or use a different tip obviously, usually small things can't afford a large 6" so a different tip is best.. for me anyway
Try using simtec clear polyester it lays on thick and will easily cover over the crackle with 2 or 3 coats. Also it sands and buffs out really nice plus it's 90% the hardness of glass. Get a cheap hvlp gun from tcp global make sure the tip is 2.0 or higher since this is a high solid...but the down side is you have 25 mins max or it will harden in the gun...just spray it up to 25 mins...clean your gun with acetone...then mix up another round by then your fist few coats will be nice a tacky then and hit it again...it may seem like a lot but the results come out so nice after wet sanding and buffing. I want to try that crackle over a silver crylon base, crackle and then candy over it ...maybe with a blue candy house of kolor or burple👍🎸
Most crackle paint jobs are finished with self leveling resin. The process is longer but doesn't require further treatment. I.E. no sanding, buffing, and so on. Holes will need to be re-drilled, but you can take advantage of any stripped holes being repaired.

How soon after the crackle coat application did you apply the 2k clear? And have you experimented with a 2k clearcoat between the base color coat and the crackle? Some brands say it helps bring bigger cracks...about to take the plunge on 2 guotar refinishes buy want to get it right!

Got it…. Working on a blue and white guitar… time consuming… used 2 cans of Montana CLEARCOAT… sounds like 2k would have been better. Also working on a new glow in the dark guitar.

Not yet, sometimes I do 10 minutes between coats, depends on the temp and humidity.

I just bought a diy explorer guitar kit. Body and neck is mahogany. Raw wood. Do you sand and grain filler first? I plan on crackle painting it.?

Heavier paint and use a heat gun in your other hand to make it dry faster.

Why do you need to apply so many clear coat layers ?
It's the only way to get a smooth glossy finish. It takes a lot of clear to fill in the cracks.

Absolutely, but the heavy amount of paint and clear would probably dull the sound a bit.

Did you let the undercoat dry then wetsand before clear coating? Or can you just clear over the crackle without wetsanding?
Do not sand your paint! You can clear right over it once it's dry.
