  • The Marsh frog is a non native species of green frog that arrived to our shores sometime in the early 1900’s and has since spread throughout the south east of the Uk and now seems to have found its way into my pond!

Had a little one hopping across the playground at my daughter's school in Lancashire last week. Just before the doors opened for hometime so I made sure to usher it into the plant cover at the back. It was particularly odd since neither they nor the nursery next door have a pond.

Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting and well done for your good deed!! It’s amazing how often you’ll come across amphibians that are well away from any water sources, Toads in particular will travel large distances (a few kilometres) in search of a mate or to return to their breeding grounds.

Another great video Ed. I found your channel a few weeks ago and have nearly watched every video - so informative and i love seeing the updates on the different ponds you have done. I just had a small raised pond built with a filter/water pump/blade, and in that new pond gone green stage (its 4 weeks old and i added one too many pond start pods - although think new ponds go green regardless). Hoping it clears and then i can add some fish in a couple of weeks

Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting! New ponds will go through various stages of algae growth- green water, green slime/brown slime on the lining, hair algae/blanket weed etc but after a few months will settle down. This is all part of the natural maturation process and nothing to worry about- we all go through this in the early stages of a new pond!
      Good luck with yours!

I've had my raised pond for a good few years now and have only ever seen three common frogs, two as a pair. Never saw any signs of spawn from the two that were together possibly the fish ate it (Ghost Koi) Location N.W England

Thanks for watching and commenting! In general raised ponds tend to be less popular for attracting local amphibians, however they (frogs newts and toads) are actually very good climbers and will often get themselves into ponds that are raised with no issues at all!
      Thanks for sharing!

Would a pond with raised sides discourage frogs from entering a pond, I’m thinking of building a more formal pond for fish and to be honest I will pass on the frogs if at all possible.

Well, this is strange. I posted a comment twice and both times it disappeared. I'll word it differently. I found a frog on our shed roof. It had climbed up the Ivy.

Hi there-thanks for watching and commenting! As others have said; frogs/amphibians are actually excellent climbers and can find their way into seemingly difficult to access ponds. However there’s no doubt that a raised pond like that would reduce amphibians interest in your pond, unless no other pond is available within your near vicinity. Sadly if you don’t like frogs theres not a huge amount you can do to prevent them- other then in ways that would be cruel-however reduction of plant/undergrowth immediately around the pond would make the pond less interesting to amphibians.

Don't get rid of the frog. Get rid of your neighbors.
