Its been 54 years since the masterpiece topped the UK charts. Too good for the crappy pop charts today.

A timeless song in my opinion from the greatest decade of music 😊
Sadly, Long John Baldry is no longer with us. This song will always be his unforgettable legacy to the world of music.
This is a LIVE performance, but practically identical to the recorded version!! A measure of the guy's musical talent. Great video clip...
Yes, he could certainly serve it up to the current generation.
I'm 62 still remember this as it was yesterday Classic X
I’m 73 and so do I ! Great era !

Legend, right up there. R I P John , always remembered, top man 🙏
One of the great songs of the 60s
This song has it all pathos, romance, harmony a true pure classic, and what a voice
I can hear the guitars start to play
And very soon they say
I was a fool to turn my love away
And with each glass of wine I feel a glow
And very soon I know
I was a fool to let my baby go
So let the heartaches begin
I can't help it, I can't win
I've lost that girl for sure
Tears won't help anymore
Yes let the heartaches begin
I can't help it, I can't win
I've lost that girl for sure
Now she's gone
I can't hold back the tears anymore
I can see the couples dancin' through the night
They hold each other tight
As they dance of love till the morning light
The soft embraces that they seem to share
Just make me feel aware
Of the lonliness I find so hard to bear
So let the heartaches begin
I can't help it, I can't win
I've lost that girl for sure
My tears won't help anymore
Yes let the heartaches, heartaches begin
I just can't help it, you know that I just can't win
I've lost that girl for sure
And now that she's gone
I can't hold back the tears anymore
This is lovely song gives me goosebumps so much talented singer back then.

Fantastic song. Loved his voice .
I have always loved this song and I haven't heard it for a long time. Wow.
Couldn't agree more. Thankfully UA-cam can revive those great moments, and underscore the miserable times we are in.
Never gets old.
Remember seeing himnin Bristol, around '68, '69 ish with Steam Packet. Fabulous.
What a voice wow 👌
Loving the 60s dance moves. True free flow on display ❤
John had a really cool voice. And this song was really against type as he was a blues singer. But it's a great song and wonderful to see him perform it on here.
This song was playing the day I was born, now sat listening thinking of my soul mate but I know I will see you again my,angel rest in peace bon x
Great singer. Great song..would have LOVED to hear The Bee Gees cover this in the late 60s with their immaculate three part harmonies!
I love this song

11 years later.
I remembered Sonic Shorts and this song and now I found it-
Love this man his voice was amazing xxx
Great, great singer. A talented man who gave a start to Rod Stewart and Elton John, but for whom personal fame was brief, a great shame.
I can remember the first time I saw him and heard him sing. It was 1959 and he used to play regularly at a coffee bar called the Gyre and Gimble in John Adam street near Charing Cross station. he had great presence and a striking voice even though he was very young.
I was one of his groupies and number 1 fan fantastic memories 👏
Hi Sheila and did you wear one of those mini skirts
Always makes me cry love it😢
We caught Long John Baldry November 23rd 1967 at the Marquee, London. The backing band, Bluesology, featured Reg Dwight (Elton John) and Caleb Quaye. On "Let the Heartaches Begin", a backing track was used. The band waltzed behind LBJ, but he heroically kept a straight face, whilst delivering the song. We returned to the Marquee the following night to take in Fleetwood Mac and Black Cat Bone (featuring Paul Kosoff). Swinging London indeed!
I think people these days discount (or straight don't realize) exactly how star-studded the late 60's London music scene was. Also while London is big, it's like, not *that* big. So a lot of these groups were zooming past (or with) one another on the trains or buses at the time. Literally legends now.
@@alexfilmwriting We were on vacation in London for 4 days, at the time. All my brother and I were interested in was bands, especially the British variety. Some London friends of ours took us down to the Marquee, as we particularly wanted to attend a show there, knowing it was home to the acts we followed. We would have gone to see any old thing, but ended up with the the aforementioned acts. Your comment about London being "star-studded" is so true, as we approached our trip as sort of a pilgrimage. I have no recollection of anything else we did in London, that visit. I went, with my wife, to London in 2017 ( I go to London every 50 Years) , and took in some things missed in 1967, such as the British museum (which hadn't lost all it's charm!), Camden Town, and the West End.
Absolutely fantastic ,
Sweet sixteen when it topped the charts brilliant 🍻🏴
Fab song. Fab voice
55yrs ago we were together when this was number 1 Every word he sings is ever so true, I let you go and I've regretted to this day. October 2022.💔💔💔
Long John Baldry following in the footsteps of Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. He would return to his blues roots shortly after.
What a song what a singer
Such a good song
Long ,long ,long John ,2,07m.!!!
A class act
a lòve you john
😢fantastic.great
He provided the unbeatable voice of Dr. Robotnik in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, and was a brilliant singer of this bygone era. He truly was a jack of all trades
R.I.P Long John Baldry
Dr.Robotnik finally got that promotion
Such a great job, he deserves a PRRRRRROMOTION!
I agree, it's well deserved after WINNING that RACE!

Great song
The good ol' days of real music....
Yes, but where have they gone? Mediocrity seems to be the key note these days.
Never.tired.hearing.this.classic.
Elton John fan n.1 from him.
❤❤❤ I love the song from my childhood days i remember my late dad putting on the radio and dancing with my mum
I was 16 when I ment my fellow and baby 🤱 sat for sister and listening to this beautiful song ❤
Bloody hell I was born in 1956 but I vaguely remember this timeless classic.
Super old butt gold ❤️❤️❤️❤️👀👀👀🎧🎧🎧
i heard this on the TV series Heart Beat WOW,, STUNNING VOICE AND SONG WELL BEFORE MY TIME BUT I AM MESMERIZED, THEY DON'T MAKE MUSIC LIKE THIS ANYMORE - SHAME,,,
Observing the audience is almost more interesting than the act on stage. Just makes you wonder what it would have been like to have been there at that time.
Still sing this on kareoke
The pop charts were quite varied back in 1967/68. Popsike, MOR balladeers, Baroque poppers, Soul etc all fighting for a place in Top 20.
im 45 and mum used to get drunk with me and i asked her what music made you feel old,she said long john baldry and told me about how he set up rod stewert for success.
great song
Long John Baldry = The Original Robotnik Voice.
Yes feel same, can't get that lovely voice, again, think as he got older I now listened to him, and he's gone sexy voice, and I'm old now but love his voice
Classy!
Great song, from a great singer rest in pease,
What a great song!
Did you know long jonh baldry discovered rod stewart ...they were at a train station on opposite sides of the tracks and long john heard rod singing anyway they spoke and thats how rod rose to fame 👍
We saw LJB at the Club A'Gogo in Newcastle. In his pale cream suit, smoking his cheroot; he looked (and sounded) so cool we should have been issued with overcoats! . He sang the blues like no-one else in England at the time.
What a pity his piano player eventually made it bigger than he did.
This was one of the few recordings of that era which my mother liked. He's sadly missed!
They do, sooner or later.......for one and all❤😢
Another memory from listening to my mums 45s when I was a kid
I was seventeen and looking to make a list of tunes I loved back then
je l adore
left ol Englebert gasping at the first post......Good for you LJB! $5.00 sez it was big Jim on guitar on the record!

Sad song
You Guys have found this song through either one of these five places:
1. Wikipedia, when you are researching more about him through either Elton John or The Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog Cartoon from 1993.
2. You found it through Sonic Shorts Volume 2
3. You found the song through Elton John's 2019 Biography, "Me".
4. You found it through Radio, the original Single, or on a Music Streaming Service.
5. ALL OF THE ABOVE!
None of the above--I just suddenly thought of it; loved it in '67, and still do.
I'm #1 and #2

They don't make em like this anymore.
Best
Very sad mixed up man - lovely voice and song
I wonder if any of the young people in the audience recognise themselves? They'll be in their mid 70s now I suppose.
They'd probably say, "Boy I did NOT know how to dance back then..."
Lovely song 🎵
this song still brings a lump to my throat...good job they still sell kleenex tissues
